Enhancing Cross-Modal Contextual Congruence For Crowdfunding Success Using Knowledge-Infused Learning, Trilok Padhi, Ugur Kursuncu, Yaman Kumar, Valerie L. Shalin, Lane Peterson Fronczek Jan 2024

Enhancing Cross-Modal Contextual Congruence For Crowdfunding Success Using Knowledge-Infused Learning, Trilok Padhi, Ugur Kursuncu, Yaman Kumar, Valerie L. Shalin, Lane Peterson Fronczek

Psychology Faculty Publications

The digital landscape continually evolves with multimodality, enriching the online experience for users. Creators and marketers aim to weave subtle contextual cues from various modalities into congruent content to engage users with a harmonious message. This interplay of multimodal cues is often a crucial factor in attracting users' attention. However, this richness of multimodality presents a challenge to computational modeling, as the semantic contextual cues spanning across modalities need to be unified to capture the true holistic meaning of the multimodal content. This contextual meaning is critical in attracting user engagement as it conveys the intended message of the brand …

Evaluating Indicators Of Success And Sustainability In Community Forests, Brittney Hall Jan 2024

Evaluating Indicators Of Success And Sustainability In Community Forests, Brittney Hall

Theses & ETDs

Community forests are forests managed by local communities. They can be beneficial in socioeconomic contexts and can have positive impacts in supporting local biodiversity of plants and animals. Community forests are considered generally effective at countering deforestation and serve as valuable systems for local communities and as a response to climate change. However, the effectiveness of community forestry is dependent on a variety of socio-ecological factors, thus presenting a need for the success and efficacy of community forests to be evaluated and assessed in a rigorous and objective manner. The purpose of this thesis is to identify socio-ecological variables that …

Bombazos Y Belonging: Exploring Belonging And Connection Between Latine Students Through Dance At A Pwi, Gabriella Batista Quintana Jan 2024

Bombazos Y Belonging: Exploring Belonging And Connection Between Latine Students Through Dance At A Pwi, Gabriella Batista Quintana

Theses & ETDs

By utilizing dance and performance ethnography in tandem with the practice of bomba (an Afro-Puerto Rican dance, genre, and drum), this thesis seeks to understand the themes of belonging and connection amongst Latine students at New College of Florida, a predominately White institution (PWI). How may dance act as a safe space, or counterspace, for students of marginalized identities to foster a sense of belonging? Can connecting to one another, despite our cultural differences within the Latine diaspora, lend itself to finding “home” in an otherwise hostile PWI? According to this study’s participants, finding familiar aspects of one’s culture amongst …

Cracked Reality: The Theater Of Chaos And Accessibility In Academia: Building A More Inclusive And Less Intimidating Environment, Remy Katz Jan 2024

Cracked Reality: The Theater Of Chaos And Accessibility In Academia: Building A More Inclusive And Less Intimidating Environment, Remy Katz

Theses & ETDs

Absurdist humor and horror is the only way to survive in the nonsensical world. Situational comedy, irony, and the macabre; this is the essence of the world of spontaneity. My work is fueled by the need to provoke unsettling emotions, leaving audiences to sit and digest feelings of discomfort and joy in the catharsis of humor. I mean, what’s more funny than watching someone have a mental breakdown? Like, come on, you’re not special, all of us are freaks. SO, I’m a bit of a freak. I like building on ideas as I produce art, feeding my emotions into all …

Newt Gingrich, The ‘94 Elections, And House Polarization: A Strategic Connection, Natalie Spivey Jan 2024

Newt Gingrich, The ‘94 Elections, And House Polarization: A Strategic Connection, Natalie Spivey

Theses & ETDs

The 1994 elections have been a highly interesting subject of study in the field of political science, mainly because of how astonishing the results were. The effects of these elections, at the time they occurred, were not yet visible; however, many books, including Thomas E. Mann and Norman J. Ornstein’s It’s Even Worse Than It Looks, have now partially attributed the force behind these elections, Newt Gingrich, to an enduring party polarization in the modern era. However, in researching the effects of the ‘94 elections, I could not find an attempted causal process tracing which would account for that connection, …

Alone Time: How Motivation For And Quality Of Solitude Impact Workplace Performance, Alyssa Sampson Jan 2024

Alone Time: How Motivation For And Quality Of Solitude Impact Workplace Performance, Alyssa Sampson

Theses & ETDs

Research has found that social isolation, especially in the case of ostracism, can have many negative effects on individuals. However, some factors decrease the extent of the negative effects. One such factor is an individual’s motivation for solitude: the reasons one seeks experiences of solitude and how they use them. Two studies expand solitude research into the workplace setting. The first study used a cross-sectional survey and examined how motivation for solitude related to relationship quality and satisfaction among coworkers, and how the association between ostracism and negative mental health is related to self-determined motivation for solitude. Self-determined motivation for …

Do Babies Learn From Interactive Baby Media?, Alyssa Palmatier Jan 2024

Do Babies Learn From Interactive Baby Media?, Alyssa Palmatier

Theses & ETDs

Children in modern society are exposed to media every day, and there is little to be done in regards to limits or screen time. Two types of videos were created and given to children between 17-24 months in order to examine the context of interaction in media and determine whether they were able to learn more novel words from interactive media than they were able to learn from non-interactive media. All participants learned between four and nine of the ten novel words they were taught via the media. Results found that the context of interaction in media did not predict …

The Problem Of “Feeling” In Whitehead’S Metaphysics, Michael A. Flannery Jan 2024

The Problem Of “Feeling” In Whitehead’S Metaphysics, Michael A. Flannery

Libraries Professional Work

This article explores process philosophy through Alfred North Whitehead and John Elof Boodin. Whitehead, known for "Process and Reality," faced criticism from Boodin for his abstract concepts, especially "feeling." Tensions over definitions and clarity in their philosophies reflect broader academic debates that may not influence general understanding.

A revised version of this article may be found at http://digitalcommons.library.uab.edu/libraries-pw/27/. The new version has been expanded to include additional material

Decolonizing 20th Century Consumerism: Analyzing The Role Of Advertising In Amauta, Sam Roberts Jan 2024

Decolonizing 20th Century Consumerism: Analyzing The Role Of Advertising In Amauta, Sam Roberts

Undergraduate Review

In simplest terms, Amauta is a socialist revista (magazine) primarily conceived of and executed by Peruvian political activist José Carlos Mariátegui, with the principal ambition of providing a space for the organic and spontaneous promulgation of a uniquely Peruvian form of Marxism. It is exceedingly difficult, however, to discuss Mariátegui’s brainchild in simple terms. Beyond its role as a socialist publication, Amauta was an arbiter of culture, at once negotiating Mariátegui’s passion for the development of a Peruvian national identity with his efforts at integrating Peru into the revolutionary zeitgeist of the early 20th century; it was a Spanish-language codex …

Assessing Speech And Language Disorders In Multilingual Children, Karla Calvo

Undergraduate Review

The role of a speech-language pathologist is constantly evolving, working with different populations for communication disorders. One of those populations is working with multilingual learners as they can have similar disorders, presenting at birth or through acquired injuries or diseases. The diversity of cultures presents multiple languages growing in sevAeral states due to the increase in multilingual children. There are issues when assessing an underlying problem of a multilingual child based on different factors. How does their input of one language impact their use of their other language? Families may speak multiple languages while the child must switch between each …

Inhabiting Numbers: Weaving, Polyphony, And Embodied Mathematics, Kristine Barrett Jan 2024

Inhabiting Numbers: Weaving, Polyphony, And Embodied Mathematics, Kristine Barrett

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Inhabiting Numbers: Polyphony as Woven Sound explores connections between vocal polyphony and textile practices, specifically weaving and spinning. Rather than consider music and weaving as separate from one another, the following paper presents the ways in which they are deeply intertwined and mutually constitutive forms of cultural expression. The technical modes of thinking produced through repetition inherent in both—particularly as practices utilizing complex mathematical structures—produce ways of thinking unique to each. Through practice, I suggest these technical modes of making transit across different materials and mediums—in both explicit and implicit ways. The music created through the interweaving of multiple voices …

Plying Together Knowledges: Revitalization Of Indigenous Textile Knowledge Through Language, Jennifer Byram, Eveline Battiest Steele Jan 2024

Plying Together Knowledges: Revitalization Of Indigenous Textile Knowledge Through Language, Jennifer Byram, Eveline Battiest Steele

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

When studying textiles for which few records exist, where does one turn? For archaeologists studying textiles in non-ideal preservation contexts, the approach often turns to indirect sources of evidence. This paper presents a research project conducted between a textile artist and archaeologist, Jennifer Byram and a basket weaver and Choctaw first-speaker, Eveline Steele, from the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma. They approached research into Southeastern United States Indigenous textiles by drawing on Choctaw language documents from the 19th century to elucidate past textile knowledge. In doing so, the project has brought forth knowledge about weaving processes and material preparation that is …

Incursive Heritage: Socio-Digital Mediations Of Mediterranean, Maria Ida De Ioanni Jan 2024

Incursive Heritage: Socio-Digital Mediations Of Mediterranean, Maria Ida De Ioanni

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Drawing upon the ongoing research endeavors within my doctoral program, this paper articulates a dual objective. Firstly, it undertakes the recognition and systematic delineation of collaborative repositories hosted on social media platforms, which serve to revitalize and perpetuate textile traditions through the curation of oral histories and diverse forms of visiotextual materials. The focal point of this inquiry encompasses social media accounts that reconfigure and contest prevailing heritage narratives by foregrounding hitherto marginalized personal and communal accounts surrounding textiles and fabrics. Functioning as dynamic digital repositories, these accounts subvert conventional heritage discourses by not only archiving and structuring knowledge but …

Environmental Metrics In Action: Exploring U.S. Superfund Sites Affiliated With The Fashion Industry, Nidia K. Trejo Jan 2024

Environmental Metrics In Action: Exploring U.S. Superfund Sites Affiliated With The Fashion Industry, Nidia K. Trejo

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Little is known of Superfund sites, long-term clean up sites, affiliated with the apparel and footwear supply chain in the United States. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA) manages the clean up of contaminated sites that pose a significant risk to human health and the environment under the Superfund program. A site can become contaminated if hazardous waste from industrial operations are mismanaged or dumped into the environment, in an uncontrolled manner. In this study, a proposed Superfund site (Mohawk Tannery in Nashua, New Hampshire), an active Superfund site (Ciba-Geigy Corp. in Toms River, New Jersery), and a …

Leading Towards Racial Justice: Counterstories Of Tk-12 Latinx Men Administrators, Pedro Espinoza Jan 2024

Leading Towards Racial Justice: Counterstories Of Tk-12 Latinx Men Administrators, Pedro Espinoza

Education (PhD) Dissertations

More than half of all students in public schools identify as Students of Color. However, there is an underrepresentation of PreKindergarten (PK)-12 Administrators of Color in public schools, including Latinx men administrators. Furthermore, the literature on the experiences and leadership practices of PK-12 Administrators of Color has mostly been on Women of Color and has utilized a phenomenology or case study research design. Therefore, this study sought to address these gaps in the literature by examining the experiences and leadership practices of Transitional Kindergarten (TK)-12 Latinx Men Administrators by centering their voices. This study utilized a Latinx Critical Race Theory …

Translation As Consciousness-Building In The Portuguese Lesbian Press (1990–2002), Grace Holleran Jan 2024

Translation As Consciousness-Building In The Portuguese Lesbian Press (1990–2002), Grace Holleran

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

The following article examines the political potential of the intimate, affective translation practices of Portuguese lesbian feminist activists in the publications Organa (1990–1992) and Lilás (1993–2002). Both publications, which I analyze through the rubric of the countercultural genre of “zine” or “fanzine,” arose in response to the repression and invisibilization that Portuguese lesbians faced, from criminalization and censorship at the hands of the fascist Estado Novo [New State] dictatorship (1933–1974) to exclusion from post-1974 feminist groups. Disconnected from any notion of lesbian identity and isolated from each other, the first lesbian activists turned toward experiences and connections abroad to build …

Extract Clinical Lab Tests From Electronic Hospital Records Through Featured Transformer Model, Lucy M. Lu, Richard S. Segall Jan 2024

Extract Clinical Lab Tests From Electronic Hospital Records Through Featured Transformer Model, Lucy M. Lu, Richard S. Segall

Faculty Publications

Natural language, as a rich source of information, has been used as the foundation of the product review, the demographic trend, and the domain specific knowledge bases. To extract entities from texts, the challenge is, free text is so sparse that missing features always exist which makes the training processing incomplete. Based on attention mechanism in deep learning architecture, the authors propose a featured transformer model (FTM) which adds category information into inputs to overcome missing feature issue. When attention mechanism performs Markov-like updates in deep learning architecture, the importance of the category represents the frequency connecting to other entities …

Dynamic Diffusion, Adam Chilton, Anu Bradford, Katerina Linos Jan 2024

Dynamic Diffusion, Adam Chilton, Anu Bradford, Katerina Linos

Articles

Research on legal diffusion typically focuses on laws’ initial adoption and ignores their later evolution. We develop a typology of three subsequent diffusion patterns: convergence, when countries revise laws to move closer to leading regulators; customization, when countries revise laws to move away from leading regulators; and stagnation, when countries cease legislating, leaving initially adopted laws in place. We then propose a general theory suggesting that economic size and geographic distance from leading regulators predict which of the three patterns countries follow. We explore this theory with case studies on the dynamic diffusion of antitrust laws in Russia, Colombia, and …

Fostering Student Connection To The Library: Personal Librarians And First-Year Experience, Loren Mixon, Tracy Conner

Library Faculty Publications

The personal librarian program was embedded into the First Year Student Success classes at Kankakee Community College to ensure freshman instruction in resources and supports available within the library while focusing on creating campus community connections with librarians. As a part of this collaboration, new library curriculum was created to involve students in the library using a variety of different modalities. Students completed an asynchronous assignment connecting typical syllabus elements to library services that may help, a class tour with basic book searching activity, and then a one-on-one meeting with their personal librarian who walked them through database research basics …

School Copaganda In The Us South: Tinsel, Twinkle, And Police-Youth Programming, Hannah Carson Baggett, Kaitlyn Selman Jan 2024

School Copaganda In The Us South: Tinsel, Twinkle, And Police-Youth Programming, Hannah Carson Baggett, Kaitlyn Selman

Faculty Publications - Criminal Justice Sciences

Told in schools across the US for decades, Officer Friendly is a story about policing. Through the literal reading of books like Miss Frances’ 1953 Your Friend the Policeman, visits from McGruff the Crime Dog, and even the ever-expanding TikTok world of dancing SROs, the story remains the same: police keep us safe from the bad guys. In this paper, we draw on data from school and police social media accounts in a community in Alabama to expose the bad faith underpinnings of this story, and how it functions through ‘friendly’ police-youth programming in schools. This story relies on at …
