Acculturative Stress, Depression, & Anxiety Among Arab Americans, Sally Kafelghazal M.S.
Acculturative Stress, Depression, & Anxiety Among Arab Americans, Sally Kafelghazal M.S.
Theses and Dissertations
Arab Americans, those who themselves or their ancestors have immigrated fromthe Middle East or North Africa to the United States, experience a lot of stress as a result of balancing varying cultures, known as acculturative stress. Due to the underrepresentation and misrepresentation of Arabs in Americans, as well as the taboo that exists in the Arab culture regarding poor mental health and seeking mental health services, the mental health impacts of acculturation stress among this population are scarcely studied. This dissertation aims to further understand ways in which acculturative stress impacts early generational Arab American adults, including immigrants and refugees, …

The Development And Significance Of The International Anchoritic Society, Michelle M. Sauer
The Development And Significance Of The International Anchoritic Society, Michelle M. Sauer
English Faculty Publications
The International Anchoritic Society (IAS) celebrated its twentieth year in 2023. Despite its name, the IAS studies all forms of medieval religious reclusion, not just the titular anchorites, and not just within the Christian tradition. Starting in 1998, independently organized sessions at Kalamazoo gradually coalesced into a formal organization, recognized officially in 2003, that has always been inclusive and supportive of forward-thinking scholarship, with many members representing the queer community and medievalists of color.

Does Art Pluralism Lead To Eliminativism?, P.D. Magnus, Christy Mag Uidhir
Does Art Pluralism Lead To Eliminativism?, P.D. Magnus, Christy Mag Uidhir
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
Art pluralism is the view that there is no single, correct account of what art is. Instead, art is understood through a plurality of art concepts and with considerations that are different for particular arts. Although avowed pluralists have retained the word “art” in their discussions, it is natural to ask whether the considerations that motivate pluralism should lead us to abandon art talk altogether; that is, should pluralism lead to eliminativism? This paper addresses arguments both for and against this move. We ultimately argue that pluralism allows one to retain the word “art”, if one wants it, but only …
The Constitutional Meaning Of Financial Terms, Tomer S. Stein, Shelby Ponton
The Constitutional Meaning Of Financial Terms, Tomer S. Stein, Shelby Ponton
Scholarly Works
The Constitution has sixty-three financial terms. These financial terms include, for instance, “compensation,” “expenditures,” “debt,” “coin,” “revenue,” “securities,” and “bankruptcies”—all of which determine the elementary building blocks of our governmental makeup. When the Supreme Court interprets the meaning of these financial terms, it does so in isolation and without a consistent framework. This Article proposes a unified framework for the interpretation of financial terms in the Constitution, comprising of two fundamental canons of construction.
First, this Article proposes that all financial terms in the Constitution should be interpreted with fiscal and monetary neutrality—interpreting financial terms in a way that does …

Bert-Based Detection Of Ai-Generated Text For Content Verification, Soham Biren Katlariwala
2024 REYES Proceedings
With advancements in AI-driven natural language generation, distinguishing between AI-generated and human-written text has become imperative for ensuring content authenticity across industries. This study explores the effectiveness of Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT) in addressing this classification challenge. Utilizing a diverse dataset and robust preprocessing techniques, BERT achieved a peak F1-score of 0.94364, outperforming traditional models such as Logistic Regression and Support Vector Machines. The results underscore the potential of transformer-based models in addressing real-world con- tent verification problems. Future enhancements include fine-tuning and expanding datasets for greater generalizability.

CONFERENCE THEME: FANTASIES OF THE MIDDLE LANDS
The idea of “middle-ness” can suggest stability—the center of an object is less likely to break than its edges. It can also suggest the opposite: something in a state of change can be said to be “in the middle”—neither one thing nor another. Mythcon 53, located in the middle of the continental U.S., welcomes an exciting range of papers, panels, and discussions exploring the concept of “middle-ness” as it is worked out in fantasy, science fiction, …
Reimagining Equitable Care: Simulation-Based Education And The Dismantling Of Implicit Bias And Stigma Of Vulnerable Populations In Hospitals, Vanessa Smith
Nursing | Senior Theses
Background: Simulation-based education consists of using high-fidelity mannequins and equipment to provide a safe space for healthcare professionals to practice crucial skills within healthcare. Used within hospitals and schools, simulation most commonly surrounds practicing hands-on skills such as central line insertion, IV insertion, Ultrasound-guided procedures, code blue response, etc. However, a large portion of healthcare that is overlooked is tackling issues within patient-provider relationships. Simulation can help dismantle the negative behaviors and feelings providers push onto patients through the use of standardized patients and role-playing. By using these methods, simulation can reduce providers’ personal implicit biases and the stigma associated …

Creative Translation For Real-World Contexts: English ↔ Spanish, Remy Attig
Creative Translation For Real-World Contexts: English ↔ Spanish, Remy Attig
Open Educational Resources
Creative Translation for Real-World Contexts is one of the first translation textbooks designed for Spanish/English speakers at an intermediate-high (B2) level. This book introduces students to the basic ideas of translation while addressing frequent pain points that recur when working bidirectionally. Additionally, a focus is placed on fostering metacognitive skills by encouraging creative translation from real-world environments such as narration, business, advertising, specialized contexts (including inclusive and queer language), and in situations when there are no clear translations available, such as sci-fi and fantasy works. Chapters alternate between Spanish and English as the languages of discussion, thus providing an equitable …

Rahab And The Perpetuation Of Deliverance, Amy H. Fisher
Rahab And The Perpetuation Of Deliverance, Amy H. Fisher
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
Deliverance is clearly the major theme of the memorable Exodus story, but the Exodus is not the only Old Testament account that teaches profound lessons about God’s redemption. The story of Rahab—the woman of Jericho—is situated in relation to the Exodus through shared images and narrative elements to highlight additional insights about God’s power to save. Specifically, the Rahab story shows that God continues in the temporal, collective delivery of his covenant people even after Egypt. God is also interested in both the temporal and spiritual deliverance of individuals, as shown in the life of Rahab herself. Finally, the story …
Investigating Indicators Of Radicalization Within Political Communities On Reddit, Darian Nigro
Investigating Indicators Of Radicalization Within Political Communities On Reddit, Darian Nigro
Theses & ETDs
Prominent cases of political violence in America are often approached by determining a potential cause and seeking a solution specific to that cause. For example, a mass shooting tied to a political ideology may be approached as the consequence of a nationwide mental health crisis or failures in gun control. However, efforts to understand and prevent such cases may be more successful if these acts are addressed as the result of radicalization: a trackable process that leads to violence. Additionally, the role of internet-based platforms has been questioned in relation to the violent realization of radical ideas. Therefore, researching the …

Dealing With Dark Histories: Examining Representations Of German Colonialism In Museums And Its Implications For Collective Memory, Public Opinion, And Policy, Sabine Wittmann
Theses & ETDs
Germany's notable process of dealing with the past, known as Vergangenheitsbewältigung, has predominantly focused on the National Socialist era. However, it overlooks other dark aspects of its history, notably its involvement in the transatlantic slave trade and colonialism. This thesis explores how cultural institutions, specifically museums and memorials, can address these overlooked histories to cultivate collective memory and influence public opinion and policy. Emphasizing emotional and interactive engagement, this thesis examines methods used by such institutions through qualitative analysis of interviews and site visits in Berlin, Hamburg, and Flensburg. Results underscore the efficacy of these methods in fostering collective memory …

Tailwiz: Empowering Domain Experts With Easy-To-Use, Task-Specific Natural Language Processing Models, Austin Peters, Tim Daj, Jonah Gelbach, David Freeman, Daniel Khang
Articles
Experts outside the field of machine learning (ML) are interested in using ML techniques to analyze their textual data, but they are inhibited by a lack of convenient natural language processing (NLP) tools. To address this issue, we present tailwiz, an easy-to-use Python tool, powered by supervised fine-tuning of NLP models. tailwiz caters to domain experts by abstracting away technical ML knowledge and running conveniently on personal computers, the preferred mode of computation among domain experts. We show that tailwiz outperforms domain experts’ current textual analysis techniques on a majority of real-world tasks, up to a 384.8% F1 increase (46.18% …
Latin American Homicide (Chapter 3), Guillermo Escano
Latin American Homicide (Chapter 3), Guillermo Escano
School of Criminal Justice Other Graduate Student Scholarship
The urgency for studying Latin America and the Caribbean(LAC) emanates from violence rates that are remarkably higher than in most world regions. Global homicide rates have recently declined (Rogers & Pridemore, 2018; Tuttle et al., 2018). While LAC followed suit, its rates are still comparatively high, and it is home to less than 10% of the global population but about one-third of homicides. The World Health Organization defines violence as endemic if a nation reaches ten homicides per 100,000 residents. Over two-thirds of LAC, nations meet this threshold (World Health Organization, 2023), and the regional mean is above 10. The …
Exploring The Interpretation And Implementation Of Migrant Programs: A Migrant Director’S Perspective, Lavanya Jawaharlal
Exploring The Interpretation And Implementation Of Migrant Programs: A Migrant Director’S Perspective, Lavanya Jawaharlal
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Against the backdrop of American agriculture, a significant educational challenge persists: the academic attainment of migrant children. Each year, an estimated 850,000 young migrants accompany their families, constituting a crucial workforce responsible for 75% of our nation's agricultural output. Despite their indispensable role, migrant students confront profound educational disparities, with only 51% managing to graduate from high school, a figure notably lower than the national average of 85%. This educational gap underscores the pressing need to address the unique academic hurdles encountered by migrant children. This dissertation investigates the interpretation and implementation of policies within the Migrant Education Program (MEP), …

Continuities And Transformations: The Tiwanaku Component Of The Site Of In Copacabana, Bolivia, Stanislava R. Chavez
Wayne State University Dissertations
The site of Cundisa in Copacabana (Copacabana Peninsula, Bolivia) was occupied almost continuously for the past 2,500 years. The oldest occupation includes a Yaya-Mama religious tradition semi-subterranean temple with some associated burials. Later, the whole site, including the interior of the Yaya-Mama temple, was used as a Tiwanaku cemetery. Subsequently, the Incas reused the site, as they incorporated Copacabana into their empire as a major pilgrimage site. After the Spanish conquest the site continued to be occupied, including an oven where glazed tiles for the Copacabana Basilica were fired. This dissertation focuses on the Tiwanaku component of this complex site. …
Metaphors Of Nature In Zen Buddhism By Thich Nhat Hanh, Usana Larbprasertporn
Metaphors Of Nature In Zen Buddhism By Thich Nhat Hanh, Usana Larbprasertporn
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This study investigates the nature metaphors employed by Thich Nhat Hanh, a renowned Vietnamese monk and Zen Buddhist master, in his teachings of various abstract Zen Buddhist concepts. It further examines the conceptual metaphors underlying those expressions by applying the theoretical framework of Lakoff and Johnson’s Conceptual Metaphor Theory. Data were collected from 14 of Thich Nhat Hanh’s best-selling English books. The findings reveal two main groups of nature metaphors—living and non-living entities—comprising ten subgroups: plant, human, and animal metaphors (living); and water/bodies of water, place, fire, light, celestial objects, earth, and wind metaphors (non-living). These metaphors reflect eleven core …
