Strategies Teachers In The United States Can Use To Support English Language Learners With Special Needs, Jacqueline G. Ozuna
Strategies Teachers In The United States Can Use To Support English Language Learners With Special Needs, Jacqueline G. Ozuna
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Supporting English language learners (ELL) with special needs is critical due to the increased number of ELL students in the United States. The National Education Association (2020) predicted that by 2025, one in four students in general education classrooms will be second language learners. Educators can significantly impact the education of ELLs by implementing proven teaching strategies. Strategies such as co-teaching (Friend and Reising, 1993), teaching through a cultural lens (Garcia and Tyler, 2010), and vocabulary (Alshahrani, 2019) are critical. This paper discusses effective teaching strategies targeting special education students concurrently learning English while considering legal mandates requiring education in …

Junia The Apostle: History And Future Of Women In The Church, Hannah Miers
Obsculta
The piece sheds light on the identity of the individual mentioned as Junia in Paul's writings to the Romans. Numerous sources, spanning from the Patristics to contemporary academia, shed further insight into her life and character. The more significant question for our times becomes why Junia is less well-known and how she exemplifies a change (though slow) in the Roman Catholic Church's perspective on women.
The Applications And Uses Of Immersive Virtual Reality: A Multisensory Approach To Effective And Efficient Academic Pedagogy, Jessica M. Myara
The Applications And Uses Of Immersive Virtual Reality: A Multisensory Approach To Effective And Efficient Academic Pedagogy, Jessica M. Myara
PCOM Capstone Projects
The long-established model of traditional educational pedagogy confers students with the necessary information required to build knowledge but lacks the ability to engross students in the learning process through active learning methods and therefore lacks the tools necessary for student engagement. Through examination of the building blocks of learning and the current pedagogical approaches, which apply learner-centered models for learning, it becomes clear that to develop an understanding of knowledge students require more than traditional didactic lectures and that effective teaching demands re-evaluation of teaching methods for better learning outcomes. As an extension of active learning, the idea of multisensory …

Bridging Gaps In Image Meme Research: A Multidisciplinary Paradigm For Scaling Up Qualitative Analyses, Mridula Mascarenhas, Daniel Ari Friedman, Richard J. Cordes
HCOM Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper outlines a multidisciplinary framework (Digital Rhetorical Ecosystem or DRE3) for scaling up qualitative analyses of image memes. First, we make a case for applying rhetorical theory to examine image memes as quasi-arguments that promote claims on a variety of political and social issues. Next, we argue for integrating rhetorical analysis of image memes into an ecological framework to trace interaction and evolution of memetic claims as they coalesce into evidence ecosystems that inform public narratives. Finally, we apply a computational framework to address the particular problem of claim identification in memes at large scales. Our integrated framework answers …

English Language Teacher Resources For Supporting English Learners In Low Enrollment Settings, Kayla M. Tromborg
English Language Teacher Resources For Supporting English Learners In Low Enrollment Settings, Kayla M. Tromborg
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Many educators and stakeholders recognize that our English learners (ELs) need quality support. However, districts and communities, especially with a low enrollment of ELs, lack the resources necessary to fully meet the needs of ELs. There are many variables to consider when putting together a Language Instruction Educational Program (LIEP) for students who are in the process of learning English as an additional language. At the center of EL programming, high-quality, researched-based curriculum is of utmost importance, as well as adequate training and mainstream curricular implementation of English language development structure by both EL and mainstream content staff. Also included …
Enhancing Learning Through Sign Language, Christopher Lane Pomeroy
Enhancing Learning Through Sign Language, Christopher Lane Pomeroy
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Developmental disabilities, such as cognitive delays or autism, are often associated with challenges in verbal communication. These challenges can limit a student’s ability to engage and demonstrate understanding in academic settings. Identifying alternative forms of expression, such as manual sign language, can be crucial in promoting learning within special education environments. This paper explores research on the physical and mental skills involved in using manual sign language for communication, examines interventions that use sign language to enhance understanding and basic communication, and discusses the potential for generalizing sign language as a tool in academic and societal contexts.

Judaism And The Transpersonal, B. Les Lancaster
Judaism And The Transpersonal, B. Les Lancaster
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies Advance Publication Archive
The interplay between Judaism, especially its mystical tradition, and transpersonal psychology is examined, focusing on two major aspects. The first concerns stages in the spiritual journey, which are analyzed for their psychological import. The stages are symbolically depicted in the biblical narrative of the Exodus from Egypt, a journey from "slavery" to "freedom." Here the Hebrew term translated as "wilderness" is seen to act as a code word, applying to five successive stages each of which I analyze in psychospiritual terms. The role of the divine feminine, the Shekhinah, is emphasized on account of Her specific role in exile and …
Mothers' Perceptions Of Stigma: Implications For Early Identification And Treatment For Children With A History Of Prenatal Opioid Exposure, Pamela Jane Holland
Mothers' Perceptions Of Stigma: Implications For Early Identification And Treatment For Children With A History Of Prenatal Opioid Exposure, Pamela Jane Holland
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
There is a lack of research that specifies the long-term effects on a child’s language development when prenatally exposed to opioids (Fill et al.,2018; Rutherford et al., 2022). Despite this, children prenatally exposed to opioids are more likely to be referred for, qualify for, and receive therapy services secondary to developmental delays and speech/language deficits. (Kaltenbach et al., 2018). Stigma continues to be a barrier to the initiation of early intervention services for children prenatally exposed to opioids (Levickis et al., 2020; Livingston et al., 2011; Peacock-Chambers et al., 2020). This phenomenological study aims to understand the perceptions of the …

Connecticut Teachers’ Knowledge Of The Science Of Reading, Barbara Daly-Byrnes
Theses and Dissertations
Learning to read proficiently is an essential skill needed in both academics and life. Without this skill, one’s opportunities are limited socioeconomically, socially, and throughout all daily life. However, there is growing concern that the methodology currently used in many school systems is not preparing children for the rigors of reading in the 21st century. In some states, the situation has resulted in state departments of education mandating reading curricula based on the science of reading. This study explored Connecticut PreK–Grade 3 teachers’ knowledge of the science of reading and the Connecticut Right to Read Act through a socio-cultural lens. …

An Examination Of The Cultural Competencies And Practices Of Preservice Teachers Enrolled In Nonurban Alternative Teacher Preparation Programs, Terrie L. Gyles
Theses and Dissertations
The critical shortage of qualified teachers in hard to staff urban schools has been a persistent issue in the U.S. for decades. Teachers and researchers have pointed to the inadequacy of teacher preparation programs to prepare teacher candidates to address the needs of culturally and linguistically diverse students and special education students as the catalyst of the teacher shortage in urban schools. Urban school systems, like the New York City Department of Education, have had success in filling their teacher shortages through alternative teacher certification programs. Through these programs, teacher candidates are given a preservice teacher preparation that incorporates three …

Is Proximity Enough? A Case Study Examining A College Access Program On The Grounds Of Public Housing On The West Coast, Nicole S. Berry
Theses and Dissertations
The issue of college access for students from low-income communities has been a longstanding challenge in American higher education. Despite numerous efforts to address the gaps in college attendance and graduation rates between students from low-income and more affluent communities, the problem remains present. This has led to a need for an in-depth analysis of college access programming explicitly tailored to low-income communities, particularly those residing in public housing authorities. The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD, 2016) has recognized this need by funding and piloting college access programs in several public housing authorities around the United States. These …
Cultural Responsiveness Training In Teacher Preparation Programs: A Qualitative Case Study, Loraine Keriece Richardson Mccray
Cultural Responsiveness Training In Teacher Preparation Programs: A Qualitative Case Study, Loraine Keriece Richardson Mccray
Theses and Dissertations
The American education system has experienced a change in the racial and ethnic background of the student population nationally and in the Long Island, New York region. Yet, the teaching population remains mostly white and female. Teacher preparation programs train teachers in content, pedagogy, and adolescent development. During the training, teachers need to develop their ability to connect and understand their students' cultural and racial norms that may not exist in their program of study. This is no fault of the teacher or program but may be an inherent piece missing from the systems established to credential preservice educators. With …
