The Impact Of Capital Letters On Perceived Urgency, Claire Sharp, Jenna Rieder, Phd
The Impact Of Capital Letters On Perceived Urgency, Claire Sharp, Jenna Rieder, Phd
Student Papers, Posters & Projects
Introduction
- Communication relies heavily on both verbal and nonverbal cues, such as tone and pitch (LaPlante & Ambady, 2002).
- In computer-mediated communication (CMC), users are forced to rely on textual paralingual cues (TPCs) to convey tone (Harris & Paradice, 2007).
- TPCs such as the use of periods, emojis, or letter repetitions (Rodríguez-Hidalgo et al., 2017) have been shown to be associated with a change in perceived sincerity (Houghton et al., 2018), positive emotions (Riordan, 2017), or pitch changes (Kalman & Gergle, 2014), respectively.
- The use of capital letters has been perceived as yelling or speaking at a louder volume (Heath, …

The Economic Costs Of Political Instability: Evidence From Pakistan, Shahid Hussain, Falik Shear
Business Review
This study analyses the impact of Political Instability (PI) on economic growth. PI is referred as the frequent regime or government changes in a country. PI affects economic growth due to inconsistent and uncertain government policies regarding investment and trade, tax system, government spending and fiscal balance, debt structure, monetary policy, exchange rates and inflation. PI coupled with these factors affects internal and external investments and ultimately future economic growth rates. Employing data from Pakistan for the period of 1984-2018, a country with a long history of various episodes of political instability under various democratic and non-democratic regimes, this study …
Bridging The Artificial Gap: Tesol Frameworks For World Language Education And Advocacy, Michelle Back, Manuela Wagner
Bridging The Artificial Gap: Tesol Frameworks For World Language Education And Advocacy, Michelle Back, Manuela Wagner
Dimensions
In this position paper we present research and data demonstrating how pedagogical frameworks traditionally used in TESOL contexts can be harnessed by world language (WL) educators to scaffold language learning and advocate for emergent multilingual language learners (EMLLs). Focusing on three pedagogical frameworks–Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), translanguaging, and multilingual ecology– we discuss how we have utilized these frameworks with WL teachers and teacher candidates and offer suggestions for how they might be used effectively in WL classrooms to both scaffold language acquisition and foster a greater appreciation for and pride in multilingualism.

Dimensions
In this paper, we bridge fields of English as a Second Language, Bilingual, and World Language teacher education through curricular innovation in methods coursework for future Chinese language teachers. We apply a language curricularization framework to analyze theoretical, ideological, political, and contextual factors underlying connections and distinctions across disciplinary borders and to guide collaboration within a language equity lens. Our work indicates the affordances of translanguaging approaches, a multilingual turn, and critical curricular analysis in preparing critically conscious language educators.
An Examination Of World Language Teacher Practices Regarding Target Language Instruction, Edris Brannen, Victoria Russell, Krista Chambless
An Examination Of World Language Teacher Practices Regarding Target Language Instruction, Edris Brannen, Victoria Russell, Krista Chambless
Dimensions
In this study, 96 world language teachers in the state of Georgia completed a survey regarding their delivery of instruction in the target language. While ACTFL (2010, 2021) recommends using the target language 90% or more of the time to deliver instruction, only 20% of the world language instructors who were surveyed reported doing so. According to ACTFL (2010, 2021), delivering instruction in the target language is necessary to create an acquisition-rich environment where learners are exposed to significant amounts of comprehensible input—a key factor for second language acquisition to occur (Krashen, 1982). This study examined three factors that may …

An Interdisciplinary Approach To Language Activism From Community Colleges: Linguistics Meets Communication Studies, Carlos De Cuba, Poppy Slocum, Laura Spinu
Publications and Research
This chapter describes the work of three linguists working in communication departments at two community colleges in the City University of New York system (CUNY) to counter deficit approaches toward dialectal variation in the field of communication studies (and beyond). The authors’ approach includes professional presentations, curricular redesign, identifying linguistic discrimination in textbooks, and conducting professional development workshops and seminars. They believe that the things they are doing are easily reproducible, so they are shared in this chapter in the hopes that more people will get actively involved in reducing/eliminating such harmful classroom pedagogies that involve deficit views of dialectal …

In November 2022, ChatGPT, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) large language model (LLM) capable of generating human-like responses, was launched. ChatGPT has a variety of promising applications in education, such as using it as thought-partner in generating curricular resources. However, scholars also recognize that the use of ChatGPT raises concerns, such as outputs that are inaccurate, nonsensical, or vague. We, two mathematics teacher educators, engaged in a collaborative self-study using qualitative descriptive approaches to investigate the procedures, concepts, and cognitive demand of ChatGPT-generated mathematical tasks focused on fraction multiplication using the area model approach. We found that the ChatGPT-generated tasks were …
Determining Students’ Personality Traits According To Parental Perspectives: A Scale Development Study, Cengiz Aglar, Tuncay Dilci
Determining Students’ Personality Traits According To Parental Perspectives: A Scale Development Study, Cengiz Aglar, Tuncay Dilci
Journal of Global Education and Research
The educational community recognizes individual differences, but it is important to fully address them in educational settings. While there are existing studies on personality traits, none focus on the personality traits of students aged 6-18. This study aims to fill this gap, as personality traits significantly influence personal, academic, and professional life. Understanding student personalities allows for the development of more effective educational programs, facilitating their full potential. The study included parents of 2,229 students from a population of 16,505,271 aged 6-18 in Turkiye. Through exploratory factor analysis (EFA), a reliable 61-item 5-point Likert scale (α = .942) was …

Borderline Ambiguity: Major Questions And Immigration Law, Peter Margulies
Denver Law Review
Interpretive doctrines rarely spawn whole cottage industries, but the major questions doctrine is an exception. Given the ferment that the doctrine has inspired among scholars, an examination of the doctrine's relevance to immigration law is overdue. This Article provides that assessment. The major questions doctrine works best as a shorthand label for the traditional tools of statutory interpretation that the Supreme Court has recently invoked in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo. Those tools, which this Article calls the “congruence canon,” include statutory text, structure, history, and implementation. Trouble starts for the major questions doctrine when its convenience as an interpretive …

Mechanosensing And Anesthesia Of Single Internodal Cells Of Chara, Manya J. Rodgers, Mark P. Staves
Mechanosensing And Anesthesia Of Single Internodal Cells Of Chara, Manya J. Rodgers, Mark P. Staves
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
The giant (2–3 × 10−2 m long) internodal cells of the aquatic plant, Chara, exhibit a rapid (>100 × 10−6 m s−1) cyclic cytoplasmic streaming which stops in response to mechanical stimuli. Since the streaming – and the stopping of streaming upon stimulation – is easily visible with a stereomicroscope, these single cells are ideal tools to investigate mechanosensing in plant cells, as well as the potential for these cells to be anesthetized. We found that dropping a steel ball (0.88 × 10−3 kg, 6 × 10−3 m in diameter) through a …

A Novel Fuzzy Time Series Forecasting Method Based On Probabilistic Fuzzy Set And Cpbd Approach, Krishna Kumar Gupta, Suneet Saxena
Applications and Applied Mathematics: An International Journal (AAM)
Probabilistic fuzzy set is used to model the non-probabilistic and probabilistic uncertainties simultaneously in the system. This study proposes a cumulative probability-based discretization and probabilistic fuzzy set based novel fuzzy time series forecasting method. It also proposes a novel discretization approach based on cumulative probability to tackle the probabilistic uncertainty in partitioning of datasets. Gaussian probability distribution function has been used to construct probabilistic fuzzy set. The advantage of the proposed work is that it addresses the uncertainties due to randomness and fuzziness simultaneously and also improves accuracy rate in time series forecasting. A proposed forecasting method is applied on …
Revisioning The Shawnee Prophet: Revitalization Movements, Religious Studies, And The Ontological Turn, Douglas L. Winiarski
Revisioning The Shawnee Prophet: Revitalization Movements, Religious Studies, And The Ontological Turn, Douglas L. Winiarski
Religious Studies Faculty Publications
Historians invariably frame the early life of Laloeshiga, more commonly known as Tenskwatawa, the Shawnee Prophet, as one of unmitigated chaos and disorder. He emerges in scholarly literature as a ne'er-do-well: failed hunter and warrior, adulterer and wife beater, penurious healer, and dissolute alcoholic. A near-death experience during the winter of 1805 triggered visions that led to his rapid rise to religious authority in the revitalization movement he led with his brother, the famed Shawnee leader Tecumseh. Newly discovered sources and systematic review of older ones reveal a vastly different origin story. None of the supposed facts of the Prophet's …

The Ackerman Institute for the Family, established in 1960 by Dr Nathan Ackerman, stands as one of the oldest and most respected family therapy institutes in the United States. Ackerman pioneered the integration of systemic insights into group settings, emphasised the crucial role of family in therapy, and advocated for the advancement and acceptance of family therapy. ‘The Ackerman’ played a pivotal role in launching Family Process, the first journal dedicated to academic activities in family therapy. Diversity and inclusion have been central tenets of Ackerman philosophy, evident in its programs, training courses, and staff composition. This commitment has produced …
Voice Synthesis Improvement By Machine Learning Of Natural Prosody, Joseph Kane, Michael N. Johnstone, Patryk Szewczyk
Voice Synthesis Improvement By Machine Learning Of Natural Prosody, Joseph Kane, Michael N. Johnstone, Patryk Szewczyk
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Since the advent of modern computing, researchers have striven to make the human–computer interface (HCI) as seamless as possible. Progress has been made on various fronts, e.g., the desktop metaphor (interface design) and natural language processing (input). One area receiving attention recently is voice activation and its corollary, computer-generated speech. Despite decades of research and development, most computer-generated voices remain easily identifiable as non-human. Prosody in speech has two primary components—intonation and rhythm—both often lacking in computer-generated voices. This research aims to enhance computer-generated text-to-speech algorithms by incorporating melodic and prosodic elements of human speech. This study explores a novel …

A Review Of Gerd Lüdemann’S Methodology In “The Resurrection Of Christ: A Historical Inquiry”, Kelvin Ruel G. Novabos
A Review Of Gerd Lüdemann’S Methodology In “The Resurrection Of Christ: A Historical Inquiry”, Kelvin Ruel G. Novabos
Loyola Papers
This article critically evaluates Gerd Lüdemann’s historical methodology in his study of the resurrection of Jesus. Situating Lüdemann’s work within the broader context of the quests for the historical Jesus, this paper identifies both its methodological strengths and its limitations, particularly its reliance on a strictly historical-critical approach. It argues that a more integrative methodology—drawing from developments in the third quest—would yield a more balanced and credible interpretation of the resurrection accounts.

The Healthy Families Healthy Kids Initiative (HFHKI) is a community-based initiative developed based on the socio-ecological model to address preventive health care needs in El Paso County, Texas, one of the most economically and health-challenged border communities in the United States. HFHKI’s three main goals are to increase access to experiential learning and health education, service delivery, and sustainable systems/linkages of care. These were accomplished through seven critical activities. We present the rationale, background, setting, and conceptual framework for the initiative, followed by the methods used to develop and assess the success of the activities and results of our project …

Disrupting Neoliberal Diversity Discourse With Critical Race College Transition Stories, Giselle Laiduc, Ian Slattery, Rebecca Covarrubias
Psychology
The college transition can challenge students’ sense-making of diversity, race, and oppression. Yet prevailing neoliberal discourses touting the market value of diversity can thwart this potential by promoting color-evasive messaging that avoids reckoning with racism. Guided by Critical Race Theory, we explored incoming students’ sense-making of diversity (n = 421) after being exposed to either color-evasive transition stories or more critical stories that discussed intersecting experiences with oppression. Using discourse analysis, we observed that Black, Latinx, and Native students and their Asian and white counterparts reproduced common neoliberal logics emphasizing the educational benefits of diversity. However, critical stories reminded …
Legacy Of Colonialism And Post-Colonial Transition: The Algerian Conflict Of Identity, Judith Papineau
Legacy Of Colonialism And Post-Colonial Transition: The Algerian Conflict Of Identity, Judith Papineau
Social Sciences
Algeria was brutally taken and colonized by France for over 130 years, altering the structure of their society, cultural artifacts, heritage, and languages. Algerians fought and reclaimed their independence, but the consequences and adverse outcomes have seeped into the fabric of society long after the Independence War of 1954-1962. Building on the available literature on colonialism and post-colonial societies and theories, this paper examines, from a sociological perspective, the relationship between Algerians, language plurality, and how the country’s education system and its language education policies, maintained by the power, play a crucial role in systemically perpetuating a deeply rooted conflict …

Research increasingly involves cross-cultural work with non-English-speaking populations, necessitating translation and cultural validation of research tools. This paper describes the process of translating and criterion validation of the Client Diagnostic Questionnaire (CDQ) for use in a multisite study in Kenya and Uganda. The English CDQ was translated into Swahili, Dholuo (Kenya) and Runyankole/Rukiga (Uganda) by expert translators. The translated documents underwent face validation by a bilingual committee, who resolved unclear statements, agreed on final translations and reviewed back translations to English. A diagnostic interview by a mental health specialist was used for criterion validation, and Kappa statistics assessed the strength …

Humans have profoundly impacted the distribution of plant and animal species over thousands of years. The most direct example of these effects is human-mediated movement of individuals, either through translocation of individuals within their range or through the introduction of species to new habitats. While human involvement may be suspected in species with obvious range disjunctions, it can be difficult to detect natural versus human-mediated dispersal events for populations at the edge of a species' range, and this uncertainty muddles how we understand the evolutionary history of populations and broad biogeographical patterns. Studies combining genetic data with archaeological, linguistic and …

Salvaging Federal Domestic Violence Gun Regulations In Bruen’S Wake, Bonnie Carlson
Salvaging Federal Domestic Violence Gun Regulations In Bruen’S Wake, Bonnie Carlson
Washington Law Review
Congress passed two life-saving laws in the mid-1990s: a protection order prohibition, which bars firearm possession for protection order respondents, and the Lautenberg Amendment, which bars firearm possession for those convicted of misdemeanor crimes of domestic violence. Both laws have been repeatedly upheld by federal courts nationwide in the nearly thirty years since their enactment. Both faced renewed constitutional challenges after the United States Supreme Court’s foundation-shifting decision in New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen on June 23, 2022. The Lautenberg Amendment has fared well; every court to consider it post-Bruen has upheld it. Courts have …

Master of Social Work Student Policy Advocacy Briefs
Addressing educational neglect cases through the child welfare system does more harm than good. SF 4747 proposes to amend the state statute, allowing for an alternative response to reports of educational neglect. This change will help address the needs of children and families that face systemic challenges that lead to educational neglect. Currently, counties are required to open a child protection case for all educational neglect reports. Amending the statute will allow counties to develop their own response to educational neglect. This more collaborative approach will help reduce the negative effects a one-size-fits-all solution can have on students and their …

Eavesdropping, The Fourth Amendment, And The Common Law (Of Eavesdropping), Donald A. Dripps
William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal
This Article addresses two of the most momentous and controversial issues raised by the Fourth Amendment. These issues are closely related but distinct. First, is eavesdropping a “search” subject to the Fourth Amendment? Second, are Fourth Amendment “searches” limited to the interests against physical intrusion protected by the common-law torts of trespass and false arrest?
[...]
Remarkably, the debate about the Fourth Amendment, the common law, and eavesdropping has almost completely ignored the common law of eavesdropping. This Article is the first to consider the Fourth Amendment in light of an in-depth examination of the common law’s prohibition of …

Given a recommender system based on reviews, the challenges are how to effectively represent the review data and how to explain the produced recommendations. We propose a novel review-specific Hypergraph (HG) model, and further introduce a model-agnostic explainability module. The HG model captures high-order connections between users, items, aspects, and opinions while maintaining information about the review. The explainability module can use the HG model to explain a prediction generated by any model. We propose a path-restricted review-selection method biased by the user preference for item reviews and propose a novel explanation method based on a review graph. Experiments on …

Lexically constrained text generation (CTG) is to generate text that contains given constrained keywords. However, the text diversity of existing models is still unsatisfactory. In this paper, we propose a lightweight dynamic refinement strategy that aims at increasing the randomness of inference to improve generation richness and diversity while maintaining a high level of fluidity and integrity. Our basic idea is to enlarge the number and length of candidate sentences in each iteration, and choose the best for subsequent refinement. On the one hand, different from previous works, which carefully insert one token between two words per action, we insert …
