American Public Opinion And Media Representations Of The Crimean War (1853–1856), Anurag Shah
American Public Opinion And Media Representations Of The Crimean War (1853–1856), Anurag Shah
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
During the Crimean War (1853–1856), France and Britain sided with the Ottoman Empire to curb Russian expansion. Though an ocean away, the American public was not only aware of this conflict but often held strong opinions on the war and its participants. American media representations of the Crimean War are indicative of this, and a systematic examination reveals some significant trends in reporting, aligning closely to and providing nuance for larger trends in American history.
The most significant trend in newspaper reporting of the Crimean War was a North-South geographical divide. Northern states supported Britain and France throughout the conflict, …

Embodied Cognition And Teaching Stem: Tenets To Explain And Enhance A Middle School Science Project, Jonathan E. Roberts, Joshua L. Williams, Robert A. Hodgdon, Caroline Payne, Gabriela Ruiz Emmanuelli
Current Issues in Middle Level Education
STEM pedagogy is a popular area for research and discussion. The empirical literature on this topic supports a variety of approaches (e.g., inquiry-based) to help instructors spark student interest create an effective learning environment, and foster long-term retention and transfer of information related to STEM topics. One potential approach is to use tenets of embodied cognition, in which behavior and cognition emerge out of real-time sensorimotor behavior of the individual situated within a particular context, to implement strategies to enhance STEM pedagogy. We applied the six lessons of embodied cognition to understand the beneficial aspects of a middle-school project on …
Toward A Renewal Of Critical Practice: Reflections On The Occupy Movement And Filipino Self Determination, Jeffrey Arellano Cabusao
Toward A Renewal Of Critical Practice: Reflections On The Occupy Movement And Filipino Self Determination, Jeffrey Arellano Cabusao
Kritika Kultura
This essay examines the significance of the developing Occupy movement within the United States, which emerged from a year of global protests (2011). It suggests that one way to broaden its vision of solidarity is to renew our critical practice (“conscientization and action” – borrowing from Brazilian educator Paulo Freire). A renewal of critical practice within the context of this essay involves examining the following more closely: 1) the dynamics of race and class in the United States and abroad, 2) the site of the academy (the politics of knowledge production), and 3.) the significance of our submerged histories of …
Living In Disgrace Without Term, Peter Horn
Living In Disgrace Without Term, Peter Horn
Kritika Kultura
This paper provides a reading of J.M. Coetzee’s novel Disgrace. Professor David Lurie, formerly professor of modern languages, then of communication, has seduced one of his students in the Romantics class, and was dismissed by the university after a disciplinary hearing where he refuses to defend himself against the charges. He pleads guilty, denying the right of the university to judge the morality of his conduct. Later he states: “I became a servant of Eros” and “I am not prepared to be reformed. I want to go on being myself.” When asked by his daughter to make his case, Lurie …

Coetzee In And Out Of Cape Town, Imraan Coovadia
Kritika Kultura
This paper is an attempt to see J.M. Coetzee’s emigration from South Africa to Australia as a logical step within his career, and to understand Coetzee’s relationship with the city and university of Cape Town. It also tries to set out the nature of Coetzee’s self-assertion and self-canonization, and the interplay between Coetzee and the Coetzeean critics.
"Wedded In The Association": Heteroglossic Form And Fragmentary Histiography In Nick Joaquin's Almanac For Manileños, Vincenz Serrano
"Wedded In The Association": Heteroglossic Form And Fragmentary Histiography In Nick Joaquin's Almanac For Manileños, Vincenz Serrano
Kritika Kultura
Almanac for Manileños (1979) by Nick Joaquin (1917-2004) is “a calendar, a weather chart, a sanctoral, a zodiac guide, and a mini encyclopedia on the world of the Manileño.” Undergirded by Mikhail Bakhtin’s concept of heteroglossia, Walter Benjamin’s montage method in writing history, and Reynaldo Ileto’s notion of non-linear emplotment, the essay engages with the Almanac’s calendars and essays and offers four claims. Firstly, although multiple genres embedded in the Almanac—which include, apart from the abovementioned, horoscopes, recipes and light verse—stratify the text, temporal associativeness offers a sense of cohesion. Secondly, the formal strategy of the calendars—typified by correspondence and …
Memory And The Diasporic Creative Imagination: Preeta Smarasan's Evening Is The Whole Day, Shanthini Pillai
Memory And The Diasporic Creative Imagination: Preeta Smarasan's Evening Is The Whole Day, Shanthini Pillai
Kritika Kultura
The focal point of this paper is the concept of transnational memory and the blurred and fluctuating boundaries of ties with the nation that was once home as depicted in Evening is the Whole Day, a novel by Preeta Samarasan, part of the emergent community of new Malaysian diasporic writers. New Malaysian diasporic writers in the context of this paper are taken to refer to writers who were born in Malaysia but are now settled elsewhere in the globe, and yet are recognizably transnational in that their writings focus on the older country and memories of family, community, and a …
América Is In The Archipelago: Mariano De La Rosa's Fíame And The Filipino (American) Novel In Spanish Of World War Ii, Adam Lifshey
América Is In The Archipelago: Mariano De La Rosa's Fíame And The Filipino (American) Novel In Spanish Of World War Ii, Adam Lifshey
Kritika Kultura
Via analysis of the World War II novel Fíame (Filipinas-América) [Trust in Me (Philippines-America)] by Mariano L. De la Rosa, this essay argues that Filipino literature in Spanish written during the United States colonial period undermines any normative definitions of both American and Filipino literature. Fíame, a hitherto unknown text, challenges the marginality of its oblivion by revamping putative national boundaries through a symbolic plot in which two couples, each composed of a Filipino and an American, develop subtly subversive relationships before, during, and immediately after the War. The novel thereby can be connected to questions of Filipino American identity …

Making A Personal Connection Brings Back The Magic, Don Sessions
Making A Personal Connection Brings Back The Magic, Don Sessions
Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education
In this age of technology with its concerns for efficiency and resources the practice of medicine and the relationship between doctors and patients is under assault. Using the doctor-patient relationship as a model to address this concern the author claims that making a personal connection between doctors and patients at the level of their shared humanity produces synchronous beneficial results. Further, this personal connection can facilitate magic, an experience where a specialized type of language and listening allow for unpredictable and unexpected results.
Ontological Inquiry In The World Of Law: Bringing Forth Subjective Experiencing From The Shadows, Margarida Garcia
Ontological Inquiry In The World Of Law: Bringing Forth Subjective Experiencing From The Shadows, Margarida Garcia
Turning Toward Being: The Journal of Ontological Inquiry in Education
This article explores how we assess the value of ontological inquiry in the world of law, and to that end, it seeks to bring forth “seeings” that show up when we open the “curtains” of law, and engage the world of law as a field of subjective experience. By revisiting subjective impressions left from participation in the world of law, and that, for the most part, have remained unexamined, the author imagines what an “ontologically sensitive” approach to legal education, practice, and scholarship might look like and be if more space was given to those who participate in those …

Gay Language: Defying The Structural Limits Of English Language In The Philippines, Norberto V. Casabal
Gay Language: Defying The Structural Limits Of English Language In The Philippines, Norberto V. Casabal
Kritika Kultura
Gay language has achieved a higher degree of acceptance in recent years in the Philippines. Both gays and non-gays can be heard uttering gay expressions. But the main role of gayspeak for gay people in the Philippines is to function as an “armor” to shield themselves from the chasm and the social stigma caused by gender differences. From a linguistic point of view, this paper not only describes the nature of this gay language and how expressions are coined; it also looks at how code mixing (gayspeak + English language) is made possible. This paper also examines how this code-mixing …

Sneaking Into The Philippines, Along The Rivers Of Babylon: An Intervention Into The Language Question, E. San Juan Jr.
Kritika Kultura
The following are remarks made on 12 March 2008 at the launching of Balikbayang Sinta: An E. San Juan Reader published by Ateneo de Manila UP. Here the author puts forward seven theses through which the contentious “language question” may be reexamined, especially as it touches on issues of national solidarity.
The Condition Of Filipino Americanism: Global Americana As A Relation Of Death, Dylan Rodríguez
The Condition Of Filipino Americanism: Global Americana As A Relation Of Death, Dylan Rodríguez
Kritika Kultura
At the nexus of a prevailing Filipino-American discourse that celebrates the Filipino-American as a cooperative participant in the United States nation-building project sits an “unnamable violence” that masks the genocidal preconditions of “multiculturalist” white supremacy, to which this discourse unwittingly subscribes. The article explores the beginnings and development of this discourse, and the workings of American white supremacy in naturalizing relations of death between itself and its “others.” The article ends with a reflection on how “natural” disasters like Hurricane Katrina and the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo become means of legitimizing discourses that reinforce white invulnerability vis-à-vis disposability of non-white …

Postcolonial English Language Politics Today: Reading Ramanathan's The English-Vernacular Divide, T. Ruanni F. Tupas
Kritika Kultura
In this essay, I will discuss the ideological structure of current postcolonial English language politics in the world, arguing that despite the “advances” in post-Independence nationalist rhetoric in most “postcolonial” countries, the debates on language continue to rehash tired voices of pragmatism and linguistic nationalism. I further argue that what is usually “notable” in current postcolonial English language politics is the disappearance or devaluing of class as a central concept in the understanding of postcolonial language and society. I will discuss these arguments through my review of Ramanathan’s The English-Vernacular Divide: Postcolonial Language Politics and Practice. I claim that the …

Poverty, Tesols's Narratives And "Other Languages": Hermeneutic Tensions In Texting-Researching Practices, Vaidehi Ramanathan
Kritika Kultura
This brief response addresses concerns raised by Ruanni Tupas in his reading of my book, The English-Vernacular Divide. It provides some background about my study, and attempts to uncover some researching and texting tensions I experienced when writing the book. Straddling as I am different geographic spaces—India and the US—with different discourses regarding English language learning and teaching in each space, the response details how my focus on the local and everyday became a way of showing how some discourses about English (its being a democratizing force, or the language of empowerment) run the risk of turning a blind eye …

Innovations In Educational Research: Developing An Original Questionnaire To Measure New Mexico’S Teacher Practices And Beliefs Related To Project-Based Learning And Culturally And Linguistically Responsive Teaching, Zachary R. Ramsey
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This dissertation investigates teacher practices and beliefs related to project-based learning (PBL) and culturally and linguistically responsive teaching (CLRT), central to New Mexico’s educational reform efforts following Martinez & Yazzie v. New Mexico (2018). The study also explored teachers’ professional learning needs and their awareness of the state’s reform initiatives. I collected responses from 37 participants using an original questionnaire instrument. While the findings are not generalizable, they reveal that teachers practiced elements of PBL and CLRT with moderate frequency and generally believed in their efficacy for improving educational outcomes for diverse student groups. The results also highlighted varying levels …

This design-based research study explored the feedback process, resulting actions, and changing instructional perspectives involving teachers, community members, and researchers leading to enhanced professional development offered to K-12 teachers of multilingual students. Specifically, the feedback from a community advisory council and teachers significantly shaped researchers’ approaches to designing and adapting a literacy course to address the needs of multilingual students’ caregivers. The findings underscore the importance of a holistic approach to professional development and highlight the multicultural perspectives that academics can discover by involving both community stakeholders and teachers in promoting impactful practices for multilingual learners.

Portraits Of Agency And Power: Exploring Andean Women In Guamán Poma's Chronicle, Ruby Sygar
University Honors Theses
This study explores the depictions of women in Felipe Guamán Poma de Ayala’s chronicle titled, El primer nueva crónica y buen gobierno. By concentrating on six distinct portraits within this manuscript, the findings intend to reveal the themes, differences, and symbolic meanings that characterize and differentiate these representations. The analysis delves into how these portrayals provide insights into the roles, status, and societal perceptions of women in Inca society during the colonial period. The situation of these depictions within the general context of gender and colonialism in Andean society aims to showcase how nobleman Guamán Poma’s work critiques and …

Orosipon Kan Bikolnon: Interrupting The Nation, Raniela Barbaza
Kritika Kultura
If narration points to notions of fixity in terms of the position of the narrator and the subsequent structuring of events, orosipon, a Bikolnon word for “story,” suggests a refusal to fixity both in terms of the location of the narrator and the structure itself of the story: the story never stops being formed as it passes through multiple speakers. Orosipon, coming from the root word osip which approximates the verb “tell,” points to more than one person involved in an act of telling, which makes the act of telling proper to no one in particular: indeed, it is improper …

This paper answers the question “What is Pantayong Pananaw?” through the subject of its study, its methods, its mode of communicating knowledge, and how it has served as a conscious effort of counteracting Western historiographic discourse. It also discusses the limitations and pitfalls of Pantayong Pananaw as well as its possible directions and trajectories.
