The Relationship Between Classroom Management, Cultural Responsiveness, Teacher Self-Efficacy, And Students' Perceptions Of Effective Teaching And Learning In The 21st Century Secondary Classroom: A Quantitative Correlational Study, Angela Herring Donaldson
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Effective classroom management plays a vital role in helping to create an environment that is conducive to effective teaching and learning. It is a catalyst for the effective implementation of teaching and learning strategies that result in better behavioral and academic outcomes. Ineffective classroom management strategies have resulted in teacher burnout, student disengagement, disruptive behavior, and negative academic outcomes for students. The purpose of this non-experimental quantitative predictive correlational study is to examine the relationship between the criterion variable (students’ perceptions of teaching and learning) and the predictor variables (cultural responsiveness, classroom management, and self-efficacy of each student’s teacher). The …

Citizen Science In A Small World Of Singlish Words, Cynthia S. Q. Siew, Jin Jye Wong
Singapore Open Research Conference 2024
Lightning talk “Citizen Science in A Small World of Singlish Words: A Word Association Study” by Winner of the Singapore Open Research Awards 2024, Assistant Professor Cynthia S. Q. SIEW from National University of Singapore. Abstract: Motivated by the lack of representation of non-dominant English dialects in existing psycholinguistic word norms, our project aims to create a database of semantic, affective, and word association norms for Singapore English words. Our research lab prioritises making all of our collected datasets and analysis scripts openly available through online repositories, such as Open Science Framework (OSF), ensuring reproducibility and reusability of research findings. …

Teaching Writing: Fostering Joy In Writing Through “Commentarying”, Ellin Kim
Teaching Writing: Fostering Joy In Writing Through “Commentarying”, Ellin Kim
New Jersey English Journal
For over 15 years, the author taught at an after-school English Language Arts center. Initially emphasizing perfection, enthusiasm waned. A graduate course changed the author's views on writing, stressing personal reflections. Implementing this, students' perceptions shifted, using "commentarying" to foster understanding and engagement in discussions on topics such as racism.
“Joy And Pain” Strategies For Transformative Learning In The English Language Arts Curriculum, Alanna Harris
“Joy And Pain” Strategies For Transformative Learning In The English Language Arts Curriculum, Alanna Harris
New Jersey English Journal
The purpose of this paper is to examine joy in English Language Arts (ELA) as a form of resistance. Drawing inspiration from the soulful tunes of Maze, particularly Frankie Beverly's compositions, the narrative delves into the duality of joy and pain as a recurring theme in black culture. Grounded in personal reflections on familial experiences, the exploration expands to encompass the transformative frameworks of influential educators and scholars: bell hooks, Gholdy Muhammad, and Cynthia Dillard. This paper examines how joy becomes a deliberate act of resistance against oppressive educational norms by analyzing their perspectives.

Discovering Strategies To Lead Teams Abruptly Forced Into Virtual Environments Due To The Covid-19 Pandemic, Shonelle Maria Ramserran
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
COVID-19 was an unprecedented time in the global economy, causing a massive shift for many organizations conducting business. The speed at which organizations needed to implement World Health Organization’s restrictions and transition their teams from face-to-face to virtual environments was unpredictable. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore what leaders prepared for an organization to cope with situations like COVID-19 when abruptly moving employees from face-to-face to virtual environments. A conceptual framework based on the organizational change theory and the team adaptation theory was used to direct this study. The research question address what strategies leaders …

“Arduous And Difficult To Obtain”: Teaching As A Hopeful Educational Practice, David I. Smith
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
In the world of education, disorientation and uncertainty has been increasing for several decades, with the Covid-19 pandemic only exacerbating preexisting challenges. Christians called to academic vocations need authentic hope to sustain them in their work—and they need to be able to share that hope with a weary world.
Habits of Hope explores a Christian understanding of hope and how it applies to the work of educators, administrators, scholars, and others in academia. Essays by master practitioners focus on six key educational practices and describe how these practices can cultivate hope within educators as well as among their students and …

Concealed Cognitive Disabilities, Bullying In The Workplace, And The Americans With Disabilities Act, Craig Darrell Taylor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This qualitative study uniquely explores the perceptions of individuals with concealable cognitive disabilities (CCDs) regarding Titles I–III of the Americans with Disabilities Act and its amendments (ADAAA). The research addresses a significant gap in understanding this population’s views on workplace experiences, particularly in the context of harassment, privacy, self-identification, and labeling. Using Schneider and Ingram’s social construction framework to examine societal power dynamics, the study analyzed interviews with eight participants, employing rigorous thematic coding. The analysis revealed four key themes: social construction (perception in the workplace and the power of employment protections), disability (cognitive disabilities and the challenges of disclosure …

The term “offshore” with regards to aquaculture has hitherto encompassed various perspectives, including technology, geographic location, legal jurisdiction, and more. To resolve the ambiguity in this term and understand its implications for current and future aquaculture development, “offshore” should be resolved into two separate metrics: distance from shore and energy exposure. The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) distinguishes between internal waters, territorial sea, contiguous zone, exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and the high seas, but currently has no precise definition for “offshore” in its provisions, and therefore no applicable laws pertaining to “offshore” aquaculture. Regulating a …

Experiments In Love: Longus’ Daphnis & Chloe And Henry De Vere Stacpoole’S The Blue Lagoon, L. Kirsten Day
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
Despite a chronological gulf of nearly two thousand years, the second century C. E. Greek romance writer Longus and the early twentieth century Irish novelist Henry de Vere Stacpoole were prompted to produce their best works by a similar motive: an urge to explore the world, and particularly the phenomenon of love and desire, from a standpoint of complete innocence. Although the resulting novels, Daphnis & Chloe and The Blue Lagoon respectively, have no evident direct connection, they exhibit surprising similarities not only in plot, setting, and characterization, but also in the values, perspectives, and worldviews they advance. The striking …

The Odyssey And Its Odyssey In Contemporary Texts: Re-Visions In Star Trek, The Time Traveler’S Wife, And The Penelopiad, Mary Economou Bailey Green
Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy
Homer’s The Odyssey is the archetypal quest story. The dialogue began with Homer, and contemporary texts and popular culture media have continued the tradition of deconstructing and recreating stories, addressing issues related to the human psyche. As Hardwick and Stray note, the relationship between ancient and modern is “not merely inherited but constantly made and remade,” one that we see in the following varied genres and versions that retell the Odyssean myth, relating re-visions of characters, relationships, structures, and themes. The original Star Trek episode “Who Mourns for Adonais” is an allegory of the Odyssean quest for human knowledge, while …
