Kodai: Framework Towards Data Augmentation Of Large Language Models In Machine Learning, Rick Rejeleene
Theses and Dissertations
Machine Learning is rapidly advancing at an incredible pace due to an increase in computational size, and availability of data. Data is the cornerstone of machine learning algorithms. Information quality has a profound impact on the performance of machine learning systems. Supervised, Unsupervised, and Reinforcement learning are three major ways of performing machine learning. Self-supervised learning, part of unsupervised learning, has made breakthroughs in engineering and research by using Large Language Models (LLM). LLM are a type of neural network, used for language understanding and generation. Recently, LLM has taken a distinct lead by demonstrating state-of-the-art capabilities in natural language …

It Takes A Village To Raise A Grandchild: Developing Communities Of Support For Grand-Families On Pei, Canada, Christina Murray, Laura Bain, Nora Spinks, Donald Avery
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
In this practice brief, we outline our research focused on grandparents raising grandchildren in Prince Edward Island (PEI), Canada. Specifically, we highlight a series of collaborative community workshops implemented as part of our research project. Using a participatory action research approach, we worked with grandparents raising grandchildren to co-design and implement the workshops, which we titled It Takes a Village to Raise a Grandchild. These workshops brought together grandparents raising grandchildren and key community members, including clergy, educators, healthcare providers, politicians, social services, child services, and researchers. The goal of these workshops was to build awareness and increase understanding …

A Global Perspective On Intersecting Social And Systemic Barriers Experienced By Grandparent-Caregivers: A Qualitative Systematic Review, Schola N. Matovu, Deborah M. Whitley, Heather M. Young
GrandFamilies: The Contemporary Journal of Research, Practice and Policy
Globally, many grandparents are taking on the caregiving role for their grandchildren without public or government interjection of support, particularly financial assistance for basic needs such as housing, health care and living expenses. This paper aimed to broaden understanding of social and systemic barriers experienced by grandparent-caregivers across the globe. Of the 2,828 relevant grandparent caregiving studies identified in the literature, 34 representing eight countries met our inclusion criteria to answer the research question and the focus of this paper: What are the social and systemic barriers experienced by grandparent-caregivers across the globe? We utilized Noblit’s and Hare’s (1988) meta-ethnography …

Some rights are more favored-and some rights are more disfavored than others. The right to self-representation is a disfavored right Despite its historic roots, the right has been subjected to judicially imposed limits that have reduced its scope. The limits on the right to self-representation include restrictions on the type of litigant that can avail themselves of the right, bars regarding the personal characteristics of litigants, barriers on the types of assistance a pro se litigant may receive, and procedural limitations on how a litigant may invoke the right. This Article is the first to study these established limitations on …
Learning The Rural Practice Of Law, Ashli R. Tomisich
Learning The Rural Practice Of Law, Ashli R. Tomisich
Wyoming Law Review
This Article explores how law schools can better educate students about the possibilities and opportunities presented by rural practice and prepare them with the skills to succeed. An aging population and dwindling availability of jobs increases the need for practitioners in rural areas. While new graduates may be willing to pursue rural law practice, employers and graduates frequently note graduates are not prepared for the skill-based practice of law. Many students reflect that law school remains too theoretical to be pragmatically helpful in their first jobs, particularly given the unique nuances and challenges of rural law practice. Recent graduates report …
Migrant Children And Legislation: Integrating Knowledge About Trauma Into Policy, Yolennys E. Albornoz
Migrant Children And Legislation: Integrating Knowledge About Trauma Into Policy, Yolennys E. Albornoz
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This study seeks to integrate some knowledge about trauma into migration policies in the U.S. regarding children. Migration is not a novel concept; it is a dynamic phenomenon that experiences continuous changes and constantly increases in numbers. Globally, the United States has been the primary destination for foreign migrants for a long time, and most of them are Latinos who cross the U.S. and Mexico border. Here, I explore how children face trauma in their home country, which forces them to migrate. Also, while they migrate and after they have migrated, exposing the three stages of trauma for migrant children. …

An In-Depth Analysis On Efficiency And Vulnerabilities On A Cloud-Based Searchable Symmetric Encryption Solution, Prithvi Chaudhari, Ji-Jian Chin, Soeheila Moesfa Mohamad
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Searchable Symmetric Encryption (SSE) has come to be as an integral cryptographic approach in a world where digital privacy is essential. The capacity to search through encrypted data whilst maintaining its integrity meets the most important demand for security and confidentiality in a society that is increasingly dependent on cloud-based services and data storage. SSE offers efficient processing of queries over encrypted datasets, allowing entities to comply with data privacy rules while preserving database usability. Our research goes into this need, concentrating on the development and thorough testing of an SSE system based on Curtmola’s architecture and employing Advanced Encryption …

Selam Medirashachin (Safe Arrival) Project: Addressing The Risk Of Trafficking, Violence, And Sexual Abuse Among Newly Arriving Migrant Girls In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Annabel Erulkar, Eyasu Hailu
Adolescents and Young People
Rates of urbanization in Ethiopia are significant and, increasingly, young females are among those who migrate from rural to urban areas. Previous research in Addis Ababa showed that, compared to boys and young men, young female migrants are more likely to migrate to cities without the accompaniment of immediate family members. and often move in with people with whom they have only loose affiliation or live on their own. Previous Population Council research on the experience of adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) revealed that girls’ migration from rural to urban areas of the country may be perilous. This is …

Public Health Impacts And Intra-Urban Forced Displacement Due To Climate Gentrification In The Greater Miami Area—Community Lawyering For Environmental Justice And Equitable Development, Theresa Pinto, Abigail L. Fleming, Sabrina Payoute, Elissa Klein
University of Miami Law Review
Because Miami-Dade County is “ground zero” for such climate effects as sea-level rise and increasingly hazardous, climate-driven Atlantic hurricanes, the coral rock ridge that runs along the Eastern coast of South Florida is a prime target for redevelopment and “climate” gentrification. Through a community and movement lawyering for environmental justice approach, we partnered with local community organizations to contribute to the ongoing work of community-driven equitable development. In partnership, we developed an environmental public health study to understand and document the public health effects on disadvantaged communities in Miami-Dade County from forced intra-urban displacement due to redevelopment that is being …

All Decisions
In a non-payment proceeding against a month-to-month tenant, the court ruled that RPAPL 711(2) cannot be used for rent not paid after the end of any given month, as each month constitutes a separate term. This decision was based on RPAPL 711(2)'s requirement for a written agreement, RPL § 232-c's definition of month-to-month tenancies, and supporting case law. While the tenant raised other defenses, the court dismissed the case based on this interpretation of RPAPL 711(2).

Garrity Immunity And The U.S. Armed Forces, Bretton H. Laudeman, Gabriel J. Chin
Garrity Immunity And The U.S. Armed Forces, Bretton H. Laudeman, Gabriel J. Chin
BYU Law Review
The U.S. military is one of the nation’s largest and most important public employers. Given the unique nature of military service, the service branches have a strong interest in ensuring the integrity of their ranks. Yet the military lacks a critical force-management tool used by every other public employer to investigate workplace misconduct: the ability to demand answers to potentially incriminating questions under Garrity v. New Jersey, 385 U.S. 493 (1967). The Garrity solution, known as “Garrity immunity,” strikes a critical balance between the government’s interests in workplace oversight and accountability with the employee’s Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination by …

Balancing The Protection And Participation Of Refugee Women Through The Women, Peace, And Security Agenda: Notes From Turkey, Ebru Demir, Bilge Sahin, Irem Sengul
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article examines whether incorporating the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda of the United Nations Security Council into the international refugee regime may give refugee women greater potential to participate in decision-making processes. In addition to recognizing the need to protect women in conflict settings, the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda also promotes women’s participation in order to achieve sustainable peace. The article focuses on Turkey, which hosts the largest number of refugees globally. The article explores the extent to which the protection and participation of refugee women in Turkey are balanced in the activities of national and international actors, …
