Youth Dignity Takings: How Book And Trans Bans Take Youth Property And Dignity, Sarah M. Camiscoli, Paige Duggins-Clay, Maryam Salmanova, Ibtihal Chamakh

Loyola Interdisciplinary Journal of Public Interest Law

This article practices Participatory Law Scholarship and Movement Law to engage Marginalized and Mobilized Youth in legal scholarship and to elevate their resistance against book bans and trans bans. Together, we—a legal scholar-practitioner, frontline movement lawyer, Youth community legal worker, and law student-activist—make the positive claim that book bans and trans bans constitute a dignity taking—a state action that takes property from a marginalized group and dehumanizes and infantilizes that group in the process. Further, we make the normative claim that legal advocates committed to repairing the deprivations of these bans and bills must attend to both the material loss …

The Deep Darkness And Impact On Domestic Violence Victims, Lauren Bludworth

Master of Arts in Human Services

Domestic violence is a prevalent challenge worldwide, and the domestic violence statistics are overwhelmingly high. Domestic violence creates many high-risk challenges for victims, which leads to lifelong consequences and negative impacts on victims. Negative consequences for domestic violence include women's physical, mental, and psychological health. These impacts on victims lead to adverse health effects, such as social and economic challenges for the victims.

This paper aims to take a closer look at the current literature that has proven negative impacts on victims, both children and women. It will move to cover the gaps in literature and then how to apply …

Clarifying The Welcoming Certification Process; Contrasting Two Central Illinois Communities, Ian Murphy-Pociask

Theses and Dissertations

The election and subsequent immigration policies of the Trump Administration 2016-2020 had implications for how local governments and communities responded to immigration legislation proposing tighter control of immigration enforcement in the interior United States. Executive Order 13768 authorized the hiring and training of an additional 10,000 Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers to enforce immigration policy in the interior. Among many other responses of local governments to federal immigration policies, a Georgia-based, Tennessee-founded national non-profit, Welcoming America, offers communities and local governments certification as official welcoming cities based on standardized criteria. Since 2017, Welcoming America has recognized local governments and communities …

How To Read A Patent: A Survey Of The Textual Characteristics Of Patent Documents And Strategies For Comprehension, Graham Sherriff

Journal of the Patent and Trademark Resource Center Association

Reading patents is an important activity for inventors and anyone seeking to file or defend a patent, as well as for “exploratory” researchers such as students in a range of disciplines. However, they are notoriously difficult to read. This paper examines the characteristics of patent documents that impair their readability and seeks to identify comprehension strategies and techniques that may alleviate this difficulty. Insights were gathered from a review of the scholarly literature on reading and patent literacy, a survey of patent educators affiliated with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)’s Patent and Trademark Research Center (PTRC) Program, and …

How Should We Measure Effectiveness Of Medical-Legal Partnerships?, Prashasti Bhatnagar, Deborah F. Perry, Margaret E. Greer Aug 2024

How Should We Measure Effectiveness Of Medical-Legal Partnerships?, Prashasti Bhatnagar, Deborah F. Perry, Margaret E. Greer

HJA Scholarship

Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) try to mitigate health inequity by uniting legal and health professionals to respond to legal determinants of patients’ health. While there is a long tradition of “patients-to-policy” work in MLPs, the current empirical evidence base has evaluated MLP effectiveness by assessing benefits to individual patients, clinicians, and hospital and legal systems. This article calls for future research to measure how community power, which includes shifting power to impacted communities to develop and lead equity-focused agendas, is built as both a process and an outcome of MLPs.

Housing Policy And Eviction: An Iterative Process., Oleksandra Maksymivna Belinova Aug 2024

Housing Policy And Eviction: An Iterative Process., Oleksandra Maksymivna Belinova

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Previously, eviction has been perceived as a legal problem rather than a social issue. Previous literature examines eviction as a social problem and the role of program administrators in policy implementation. Through a mixed-methods study of in-depth semi structured interviews and secondary descriptive analysis of eviction data, this study serves explores program administrators’ perspectives on housing policy and eviction practices and the impact these perspectives have on policy implementation and eviction prevention. The results indicate that program administrators view eviction as a legal phenomenon influenced by housing market dynamics with eviction prevention efforts limited by data collection and the lack …

Understanding And Improving Law Enforcement Investigations Of Human Trafficking: Focus On Labor Trafficking, Daniela Peterka-Benton, Alison Boak, Christabelle Robinson, Madison Kranis

Articles, Presentations, and Reports

The National Expert Roundtable on Labor Trafficking brought together survivors, prosecutors, law enforcement agents, advocates, and service providers to address systemic gaps in labor trafficking investigations. The discussion revealed that labor trafficking cases remain under-recognized and inadequately prosecuted compared to sex trafficking. Key recommendations include: developing multi-disciplinary task forces, improving screening tools and victim interviews, integrating survivor-led peer support, and strengthening partnerships between police and service providers. The report emphasizes victim-centered, culturally competent methodologies and enhanced training to ensure survivors’ well-being alongside justice.

Homelessness Research & Action Collaborative Publications and Presentations

In 2020-2021 Oregon legislators approved $74.7 million to assist communities to purchase local motels and convert them into emergency shelters. The goal was to help keep people safe during COVID and to address the need for housing for victims of the wildfires in light of the deficit of appropriate shelter resources facing the state. A total of 19 projects received funding, and by 2023 all of the projects were providing services to people experiencing homelessness. Combined, this resulted in 865 new units of emergency shelter-- a 20% increase in the state’s supply. According to an analysis done by Oregon Community …

Why Mlp Legal Care Should Be Financed As Health Care, William M. Sage, Keegan D. Warren Aug 2024

Why Mlp Legal Care Should Be Financed As Health Care, William M. Sage, Keegan D. Warren

Faculty Scholarship

Medical-legal partnership (MLP) integrates the unique expertise of lawyers into collaborative clinical environments. MLP teams meet the needs of individual patients while also detecting structural problems at the root of health inequities and advancing solutions at the institutional, community, and system levels. Yet MLPs today operate in limited settings and survive on scant budgets. Expanding their impact requires secure funding. Financing MLPs as health care can do the following: (1) help address inequity at the point of care; (2) enable expert diagnosis and treatment of nonmedical drivers of health; (3) enhance team-based practice in health care organizations; (4) offer another …

Emergency Sheltering And Autism, Rrose Lamay Aug 2024

Emergency Sheltering And Autism, Rrose Lamay

Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health

While research is abundant on the individual topics of caring for vulnerable populations in a disaster, Autism Spectrum Disorder. There is little guidance available that ties these together and deals directly with the emergency sheltering of minors on the autism spectrum. The information gap extends to preparedness for caregivers of children on the spectrum, shelter workers, and community members. This vulnerable population is known to have specific needs during disasters when mass sheltering is needed. These needs could be addressed by the development of a comprehensive literature review, a survey, and a coinciding guide. The literature review discusses preexisting academic …

How Is Access To Legal Resources And Advocacy Foundational To Health Justice?, Yael Zakai Cannon Aug 2024

How Is Access To Legal Resources And Advocacy Foundational To Health Justice?, Yael Zakai Cannon

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Health justice as a movement incorporates research about how to more effectively leverage law, policy, and institutions to dismantle inequitable power distributions and accompanying patterns of marginalization that are root causes of health inequity. Legal advocacy is key to health justice because it addresses patients’ health-harming legal needs in housing, public benefits, employment, education, immigration, domestic violence, and other areas of law. In medical-legal partnerships, lawyers and clinicians are uniquely positioned to jointly identify and remove legal barriers to patients’ health, advocate for structural reform, and build community power.

Human Trafficking Screening Tools Amongst Migrants And Refugees: Current Tools And Future Outlooks, Audra Fox Aug 2024

Human Trafficking Screening Tools Amongst Migrants And Refugees: Current Tools And Future Outlooks, Audra Fox

Student Theses

While various human trafficking screening tools exist to help stakeholders identify indicators and risk of trafficking, few tools are designed specifically for use amongst migrants and refugees. Via interviews with anti-trafficking stakeholders, the following qualitative study describes what tools stakeholders currently use to asses trafficking amongst migrants and refugee, and if stakeholders desire a new tool specific for migrant/refugee populations. Thematic results indicate that most stakeholders are not using validated tools for trafficking victims, let alone migrants and refugees (n=5, 38.5%). Of the total sample, 62% of participants (n=8) reported various screening discrepancies across stakeholders. Additionally, …
