From Books To Justice: Public Libraries Strengthening Legal Access Across Kansas, Lauren J. Franks, Ziwei Qi Apr 2026

From Books To Justice: Public Libraries Strengthening Legal Access Across Kansas, Lauren J. Franks, Ziwei Qi

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

Legal self-help centers across Kansas allow access to legal information for self-represented litigants in civil court cases. However, there is a lack of these centers in rural areas. In areas where this resource does not exist, libraries, which already serve as a trusted community-centered hub, can help provide legal information and resources. This project aims to identify best practices in increasing access to legal information and survey key staff including self-help center staff, court staff such as court clerks and judges, and librarians, to help inform our integration of legal self-help services into public libraries. By executing a short anonymous …

Joint Representation Of Spouses And Romantic Partners: Ethical Considerations For Estate Planners, Elizabeth R. Carter Apr 2026

Joint Representation Of Spouses And Romantic Partners: Ethical Considerations For Estate Planners, Elizabeth R. Carter

Arkansas Law Review

Attorneys routinely represent married couples jointly in estate planning matters. Joint representation of married couples—and, increasingly, unmarried romantic partners—is a routine practice for most estate planners. This practice was not always so widely accepted. Beginning in the 1990s, scholars, attorneys, and interest groups successfully advocated for the widespread acceptance of joint representation in estate planning. In a joint representation, the attorney represents both individuals in a collaborative form of representation where confidences and goals are shared between both clients and the attorney. Proponents of joint representation in the estate planning setting argue that it reduces costs, is more consistent with …

Weaponizing Consumer Protection Laws, Uriel De La Rosa Apr 2026

Weaponizing Consumer Protection Laws, Uriel De La Rosa

Texas A&M Journal of Property Law

State attorneys general (“AGs”) wield significant authority under consumer protection laws intended to safeguard the public from unfair and deceptive business practices. However, this authority is increasingly being used to target nonprofit organizations, interfering with their ability to control and utilize their property and resources effectively. By issuing vague and overly broad administrative subpoenas, AGs are overstepping their mandate, using their powers for politically motivated or retaliatory purposes that jeopardize nonprofits’ assets, donor funds, and operational resources. This Note examines recent cases, such as the Texas AG’s investigation of Annunciation House and the Washington AG’s scrutiny of the Second Amendment …

Advice For Incorporating Ai Tools Into Your Legal Practice, Celia Bigoness, Robert A. Mackenzie, David J. Reiss

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

We have been speaking with many lawyers and law students about using generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools in their legal practice. We are struck by the fact that many of them have not been experimenting much, if at all, with the tools that are available to them - although many acknowledge that their clients are increasingly integrating generative AI into their businesses. We have been integrating a lot of these tools into our own professional lives, and here are some tips to help lawyers and law students get comfortable with AI tools that can help them, in big ways and …

Syracuse Veterans Field Guide: The Homefront Edition, Amanda Keeler, Seth M. Owens, Elizabeth Kubala, Ken Marfilius

Voices of Service Symposium

Social services are available to veterans in the Syracuse area, yet locating and accessing help can remain challenging-particularly when needs span multiple systems and eligibility requirements are unclear. The goal of this project was to create a brief, pocket-sized resource guide that can be distributed to area veterans and used quickly "in the moment": to identify actionable supports.

The guide organizes services into 12 categories: accessing veterans' benefits; mental and physical healthcare; education benefits; financial services; housing; nutritional support; legal services; documentation resources; technology access; and peer support. Within each category, the guide provides a curated, limited set of local …

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to describe mental health substance use professionals’ experiences with secondary trauma. This study specifically concentrates on the experiences of mental health professionals working in the substance abuse field within the Washington, D.C. metropolitan region. The primary theory guiding this study is the constructivist self-development theory, which focuses on different responses (i.e., positive vs. negative) among individuals who …

Bridging The Justice Gap: A Comparative Analysis Of Legal Aid Access In Putnam County And Beyond, Hailey Nowak '26 Apr 2026

Bridging The Justice Gap: A Comparative Analysis Of Legal Aid Access In Putnam County And Beyond, Hailey Nowak '26

Honor Scholar Theses

This project examines how Putnam County can more effectively address the justice gap by examining its current legal landscape alongside the legal aid policies implemented by comparable counties. It begins with a local case study of Putnam County to identify the specific legal needs, structural characteristics, and barriers to accessing justice within the county. Building on this information, a comparative analysis is conducted with two theoretically similar counties to determine which legal aid interventions could be the most successful. Guided by these findings, practical, evidence-based policy recommendations are offered to improve the availability and quality of legal services within Putnam …

All Decisions

Court denied discovery, granted landlord's cross-motion to amend the petition to allege GCEL coverage, but then dismissed the amended petition under RPAPL § 741(4) for failure to state any facts about unpaid rent due and owing. Court held that the GCEL ground of nonpayment (RPL § 216[1][a][i]) requires the petition to allege specific facts about unpaid rent, and that alleging only a sum of use and occupancy owed was insufficient because 'rent' and 'U&O' are legally distinct terms, and failure to pay use and occupancy does not constitute a 'good cause' ground for lease non-renewal under GCEL.
