Eliding Consent In The Case Of Pandemic Countermeasures Authorized Only For Emergency Use, Lars Noah Jan 2024

Eliding Consent In The Case Of Pandemic Countermeasures Authorized Only For Emergency Use, Lars Noah

UF Law Faculty Publications

Four months after the first vaccines against Covid-19 became available to the public, and just as some universities announced plans to require inoculations, the Boston Globe quoted me as (alone) suggesting that mandates would conflict with federal law. When Congress created a special mechanism for the emergency use of still investigational products, it directed providers to reveal, among other things, that individuals remained free to decline such an intervention; only after full FDA approval of a medical countermeasure would this disclosure obligation become inapplicable. I have watched with dismay over the last three years as nearly everyone—including Executive branch officials, …

Does Federal Preemption Inoculate Us Against The Alarming Prospect Of State Vaccine Bans?, Lars Noah Jan 2024

Does Federal Preemption Inoculate Us Against The Alarming Prospect Of State Vaccine Bans?, Lars Noah

UF Law Faculty Publications

With growing resistance to vaccinations-premised, for instance, on misplaced fears of side effects or religious objections-it takes little effort to imagine that a state might act to prohibit some or all uses of a particular vaccine licensed by the federal government. Indeed, one year ago, legislators in a couple of states toyed with the idea of banning the primary vaccines against Covid-19, and, twenty years ago, half a dozen states effectively barred certain uses of one flu vaccine formulation. Although federal law should preempt at least some of these types of state restrictions, the Supremacy Clause of the U.S. Constitution …

Ivermectin Mda For Malaria Control And Plasmodium Species Diversity In Burkina Faso, Julia Ellman Jan 2024

Ivermectin Mda For Malaria Control And Plasmodium Species Diversity In Burkina Faso, Julia Ellman

Public Health Theses

Malaria is a major cause of mortality globally, but particularly in Africa and among children. As the growth of drug resistance threatens current malaria control and treatment strategies, novel interventions are needed to combat the recent increase in cases. Ivermectin is an endectocide that has been historically used to treat neglected tropical parasitic diseases through mass drug administration (MDA). Recently, it has been demonstrated to have a lethal effect on mosquitos, suggesting its potential as a valuable vector control strategy. RIMDAMAL II is a cluster randomized control trial that was conducted in southwestern Burkina Faso in 2019-2020 to evaluate the …

County-Level Factors Associated With School-Required Immunization Rates Among Connecticut Kindergarteners: 2018-2023, Carolyn Savananh Henry Jan 2024

County-Level Factors Associated With School-Required Immunization Rates Among Connecticut Kindergarteners: 2018-2023, Carolyn Savananh Henry

Public Health Theses

The COVID-19 pandemic brought public attention to the implications of anti-vaccine sentiment to population health. However, the anti-vaccine movement began impacting school-aged children long before the pandemic. This study examines the role of socioeconomic factors in Connecticut kindergarten immunization rates between the 2018-2018 and 2022-2023 school years. Connecticut is the third smallest state in the United States, yet significantly diverse socioeconomic statuses exist within its small spatial boundary.

Analyzing data from the Connecticut Annual School Immunization Survey and the United States Census, we demonstrate a connection between socioeconomic factors and kindergarteners fully up-to-date on all required school immunizations at the …

Hemin As A Contributor To Inflammation In Sickle Cell Disease, Sarah Hinderstein Jan 2024

Hemin As A Contributor To Inflammation In Sickle Cell Disease, Sarah Hinderstein

Public Health Theses

Background: Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) is the most common genetic hematological disorder and puts individuals at increased risk of morbidity and mortality due to infectious disease. Those with SCD also have a reduced capacity to mount successful vaccine responses compared to healthy individuals but there is an incomplete understanding of the mechanisms behind this.

Objectives: We aim to investigate the role of hemin as a potential contributor to inflammatory dysregulation and decreased vaccine immunogenicity in patients with SCD.

Methods: Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) were isolated from patients with SCD aged 7-22 and healthy participants aged 22-30. We utilized flow …

Assessing Lipid Composition Of Cell Membrane In Escherichia Coli Under Aerobic And Anaerobic Conditions, Isabelle Johnson Jan 2024

Assessing Lipid Composition Of Cell Membrane In Escherichia Coli Under Aerobic And Anaerobic Conditions, Isabelle Johnson

Undergraduate Theses, Professional Papers, and Capstone Artifacts

Escherichia coli is a highly studied model organism that is tightly tied to the mammalian gastrointestinal system. This microorganism has the capability to be a beneficial gut microbe or a life-threatening pathogen. In this study, the lipid membrane of Escherichia coli was investigated using Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) to observe the change in its composition in aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Evidence of desaturation was discovered in the spectra, though more investigation is needed to understand the metabolic processes and drives that result in this change. Elucidation of these pathways in the future could result in …

Compassionless Plea Bargaining, Julian A. Cook Iii Jan 2024

Compassionless Plea Bargaining, Julian A. Cook Iii

UF Law Faculty Publications

Too often, the guilty plea hearing process practiced in our federal courts fails to adequately ensure the validity of a defendant’s change of plea decision. Rather than engage in colloquies that are sufficiently in-depth and truly aimed at ascertaining voluntariness and defendant comprehension, critical details are frequently glossed over, and defendant guilty pleas are accepted without meaningful inquiry.

While academics have skillfully critiqued the Sixth Amendment and its trial-focused provisions, comparatively scant focus has been expended on the equally, if not more, critical change of plea hearing. Compassionless Plea Bargaining seeks to fill this gap with its focus on a …

Protecting Electronic Health Records After Dobbs, Francis, Leslie P. Jan 2024

Protecting Electronic Health Records After Dobbs, Francis, Leslie P.

Santa Clara Law Review

In the aftermath of Dobbs, states are taking dueling approaches to abortion prohibitions. Some states are enacting draconian criminal penalties for abortion providers or those helping patients seeking abortion services. Other states are doing all they can to protect patients receiving services within their borders and those who help them. Medical records are at the heart of these conflicts as they provide the best evidence of the patient’s condition and care provided. This article assesses the likely efficacy of state efforts to protect information in electronic health records from use in prosecutions or suits for damages in abortion restrictive states. …

Delineating Contributions Of Genotype And Lineage To Lung Cancer Therapy Response, Kassandra Jo Naughton Jan 2024

Delineating Contributions Of Genotype And Lineage To Lung Cancer Therapy Response, Kassandra Jo Naughton

Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) heterogeneity is a major challenge for determining effective treatment strategies. Adenocarcinomas (ADCs) and squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are histologically and epigenetically distinct subtypes of NSCLC. Patients with ADC tumors harboring mutations in both KRAS and LKB1 (aka STK11) have lower survival rates than those with KRAS-only tumors. KRAS/LKB1 tumors are not only aggressive, but also respond poorly to immunotherapy. However, these data are limited to ADCs, and it is unclear if SCCs with this genotype are also resistant to immunotherapy. We developed a mouse model of Krasmut/Lkb1mut capable of producing …

Early Identification Of Covid-19 Patients Using Hematological Profile And Biochemical Parameters, Zahra'a Abdul Al-Aziz Yousif, Jabbar S. Hassan, Ghaith Hamid Hameed

Al-Nisour Journal for Medical Sciences

COVID-19 patients showed changes in biochemical and hematological parameters which may cause other complications. D-dimer is one of the prognostic biomarkers used to predict COVID-19 infection, the elevated level of it considered one of the risk factors for mortality especially in adult COVID-19 patients and indicated the positive correlation between D-dimer and disease severity. Another biochemical biomarker is ferritin and CRP, which consider a key mediators of the immune dysregulation via direct immune suppressive and contributing to cytokine storm. This suggested the ferritin and CRP level might be considered a crucial factor influencing the severity of COVID-19. SARS-COV-2 also has …
