Biological Lags And Market Dynamics In Vertically Coordinated Food Supply Chains: Hpai Impacts On U.S. Egg Prices, James L. Mitchell, Jada M. Thompson, Trey Malone

Department of Agricultural Economics Faculty Publications

It is well known that livestock production involves long biological lags. Failure to account for these biological lags can result in the misspecification of supply chain relationships and adjustments to market shocks, which can have significant implications for policy decisions. An example is the 2022 Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) event that caused high mortality rates in domestic poultry supply chains and reduced egg production. We use the 2022–2023 HPAI event to highlight the implications of misspecification of disease dynamics in agri-food systems. Specifically, we examine the impact of HPAI on U.S. egg prices in 2022–2023. To do this, we …

As Chagas disease remains prevalent in the Americas, it is important that healthcare professionals and researchers are aware of the screening, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment recommendations for the populations of patients they care for and study. Management of Trypanosoma cruzi infection in immunocompromised hosts is challenging, particularly because, regardless of antitrypanosomal treatment status, immunocompromised patients with Chagas disease are at risk for T. cruzi reactivation, which can be lethal. Evidence-based practices to prevent and manage T. cruzi reactivation vary depending on the type of immunocompromise. Here, we review available data describing Chagas disease epidemiology, testing, and management practices for various …

Development Of Biochemical And Cellular Probes To Study Ripk1 Target Engagement, Xin Yu, Hanfeng Lin, Feng Li, Jin Wang, Dong Lu

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

RIPK1 inhibitors have emerged as promising candidates for treating diverse diseases, including inflammatory diseases, autoimmune disorders, Alzheimer’s disease, and cancer. However, the previously reported binding assays have limited sensitivity and stability, impeding high-throughput screening and robust characterization of the RIPK1 inhibitors. To address this challenge, we introduced two probes, T2-BDP-FL and T3-BDP-FL, derived from distinct RIPK1 inhibitors with different binding modes to establish time-resolved fluorescence resonance energy transfer (TR-FRET) displacement assays. Employing our TR-FRET displacement assays, we quantified the biochemical binding affinities of a series of RIPK1 inhibitors with diverse structural and binding modes for human RIPK1. Consistent results were …

Implementing An Antibiotic Stewardship Program Using The Mitigate Toolkit In An Urgent Care Setting, Christina Ross Jun 2024

Implementing An Antibiotic Stewardship Program Using The Mitigate Toolkit In An Urgent Care Setting, Christina Ross

DNP and Student Works

Antibiotic resistance is one of the utmost hazards to public and global health. On average, 2.8 million annual antibiotic-resistant infections in the U.S. and more than 35,000 deaths resulted in 2019. Increased resistance rates are related to worse clinical outcomes and healthcare costs - an increase in adverse reactions such as allergic reactions and Clostridium difficile infections results. The creation of Urgent Care (UC) clinics across the U. S. has increased access to healthcare but exceeded the national average of antibiotic prescriptions to maintain patient satisfaction. Developing an Antibiotic Stewardship Program (ASP) in a UC setting will reduce inappropriate antibiotic …

The advancement of generative AI, involving the utilization of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT to assess public opinion and sentiment, has become increasingly prevalent. However, this upsurge in usage raises significant questions about the transparency and interpretability of the predictions made by these LLM Models. Hence, this paper explores the imperative of ensuring transparency in the application of ChatGPT for public sentiment analysis. To tackle these challenges, we propose using a lexicon-based model as a surrogate to approximate both global and local predictions. Through case studies, we demonstrate how transparency mechanisms, bolstered by the lexicon-based model, can be seamlessly …

The Mrnacalc Webserver Accounts For The N1-Methylpseudouridine Hypochromicity To Enable Precise Nucleoside-Modified Mrna Quantification, Sarah E. Krul, Sean J. Hoehn, Carlos E. Crespo-Hernández

Faculty Scholarship

Nucleoside-modified messenger RNA (mRNA) technologies necessarily incorporate N1-methylpseudouridine into the mRNA molecules to prevent the over-stimulation of cytoplasmic RNA sensors. Despite this modification, mRNA concentrations remain mostly determined through the measurement of UV absorbance at 260 nm wavelength (A260). Herein, we report that the N1-methylpseudouridine absorbs approximately 40% less UV light at 260 nm than uridine, and its incorporation into mRNAs leads to the under-estimation of nucleoside-modified mRNA concentrations, with 5%–15% error, in an mRNA-sequence-dependent manner. We therefore examined the RNA quantification methods and developed the mRNACalc webserver. It accounts for the molar absorption coefficient of modified nucleotides at 260 …

Ethanolamine (EA) affects the colonization and pathogenicity of certain human bacterial pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract. However, EA can also affect the intracellular survival and replication of host cell invasive bacteria such as Listeria monocytogenes (LMO) and Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium). The EA utilization (eut) genes can be categorized as regulatory, enzymatic, or structural, and previous work in LMO showed that loss of genes encoding functions for the enzymatic breakdown of EA inhibited LMO intracellular replication. In this work, we sought to further characterize the role of EA utilization during LMO infection of host …

Treatment options are currently limited for persons with HIV-1 (PWH) who are heavily treatment-experienced and/or have multidrug-resistant HIV-1. Three agents have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) since 2018, representing a significant advancement for this population: ibalizumab, fostemsavir, and lenacapavir. However, there is a paucity of recommendations endorsed by national and international guidelines describing the optimal use (e.g., selection and monitoring after initiation) of these novel antiretrovirals in this population. To address this gap, a modified Delphi technique was used to develop these consensus recommendations that establish a framework for initiating and managing ibalizumab, fostemsavir, or …
