Evaluating Uv-Protective Low-Emissivity Window Films: Implications For Thermal And Visual Comfort In Luminous Office Buildings, Lina M. Shaker
AUIQ Complementary Biological System
This review article explores the integration of thin window films and solar energy systems to enhance thermal comfort in luminous office buildings. Luminous office buildings, which prioritize natural lighting, often face challenges in maintaining thermal comfort for occupants. By integrating solar energy systems, such as photovoltaic (PV) and solar thermal systems, with thin window films, it is possible to optimize thermal comfort while harnessing sustainable energy sources. Thin window films act as a barrier against solar radiation, reducing heat gain while allowing therapeutic blue light (400-520nm) transmission. The advantages of thin window films include improved thermal insulation, glare reduction, and …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Background/aim: Misfolded proteins are eliminated by a process known as Endoplasmic reticulum-associated protein degradation (ERAD). ERAD has an impact on variety of illnesses, such as diabetes, cystic fibrosis, cancer, and neurological conditions. We concentrated on p97/Valosin-containing protein (VCP) and small VCP-interacting protein (SVIP) despite there being many proteins involved in ERAD. The existence and function of SVIP and p97/VCP in various types of pancreatic cancer have not yet been investigated. The study's objectives are to examine the expressions of SVIP and p97/VCP in two pancreatic cancer types and to show whether these proteins aid in the invasion and migration of …

Ophidiomyces Ophidiicola And Texas Snakes: A Field To Bench Study Of Ophidiomycosis, Kenlynn L. Volz
Biology Theses
Ophidiomyces ophidiicola (Oo), the primary cause of Ophidiomycosis, is a fungal pathogen recently detected in Texas snakes. Prior to this study, there were major knowledge gaps regarding Oo growth, spread, and suitable environmental conditions. This study filled those gaps using a field to bench approach involving sampling snakes across Texas, in vitro fungal growth, and ecological niche modeling. 103 snakes were sampled across Texas in 2023 and 2024 and six cases of Oo infection were detected. Results of the growth experiment suggest that Oo prefers more stable temperatures and high humidity to a point and that there is a …

Application of the physical laws of energy and mass conservation at the whole-body level is not necessarily informative about causal mechanisms of weight gain and the development of obesity. The energy balance model (EBM) and the carbohydrate–insulin model (CIM) are two plausible theories, among several others, attempting to explain why obesity develops within an overall common physiological framework of regulation of human energy metabolism. These models have been used to explain the pathogenesis of obesity in individuals as well as the dramatic increases in the prevalence of obesity worldwide over the past half century. Here, we summarize outcomes of a …

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a bacterium known to be associated with a significant risk of gastric cancer in addition to chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, and MALT lymphoma. Although only a small percentage of patients infected with H. pylori develop gastric cancer, Gastric cancer causes more than 750,000 deaths worldwide, with 90% of cases being caused by H. pylori. The eradication of this bacterium rests on multiple drug regimens as guided by various consensus. However, the efficacy of empirical therapy is decreasing due to antimicrobial resistance. In addition, biofilm formation complicates eradication. As the search for new antibiotics …

Potassium deficiency is known to induce muscle fatigue, necessitating the inclusion of potassium-rich foods, such as orange (Citrus sinensis) and banana (Musa textilia) in diet. Previous studies have shown that consuming 150 g and 300 g of banana is effective in preventing muscle fatigue, with orange containing 237.4 mg of potassium per 300 ml. Therefore, this study aims to examine the relationship between lactic acid concentration and muscle tension reduction in fish auction workers after the administration of orange and banana. The study procedures were carried out with a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test group design, and …

Humans with monogenic inborn errors responsible for extreme disease phenotypes can reveal essential physiological pathways. We investigated germline mutations in GNAI2, which encodes Gαi2, a key component in heterotrimeric G-protein signal transduction usually thought to regulate adenylyl cyclase-mediated cAMP production. Patients with activating Gαi2 mutations had clinical presentations that included impaired immunity. Mutant Gαi2 impaired cell migration and augmented responses to T cell receptor (TCR) stimulation. We found that mutant Gαi2 influenced TCR signaling by sequestering the GTPase-activating protein RASA2, thereby promoting RAS activation and increasing downstream ERK/MAPK and PI3K-AKT S6 signaling to drive cellular growth and proliferation.

Emotional health significantly impacts physical and psychological well-being, with emotional imbalances and cognitive disorders leading to various health issues. Timely diagnosis of mental illnesses is crucial for preventing severe disorders and enhancing medical care quality. Physiological signals, such as Electrocardiograms (ECG) and Electroencephalograms (EEG), which reflect cardiac and neuronal activities, are reliable for emotion recognition as they are less susceptible to manipulation than physical signals. Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) is also closely linked to emotional states. Researchers have developed various methods for classifying signals to detect emotions. However, these signals are susceptible to noise and are inherently non-stationary, meaning they …

Endogenous Base Damage As A Driver Of Genomic Instability In Homologous Recombination-Deficient Cancers, Lindsey N Aubuchon, Priyanka Verma
Endogenous Base Damage As A Driver Of Genomic Instability In Homologous Recombination-Deficient Cancers, Lindsey N Aubuchon, Priyanka Verma
2020-Current year OA Pubs
Homologous recombination (HR) is a high-fidelity DNA double-strand break (DSB) repair pathway. Both familial and somatic loss of function mutation(s) in various HR genes predispose to a variety of cancer types, underscoring the importance of error-free repair of DSBs in human physiology. While environmental sources of DSBs have been known, more recent studies have begun to uncover the role of endogenous base damage in leading to these breaks. Base damage repair intermediates often consist of single-strand breaks, which if left unrepaired, can lead to DSBs as the replication fork encounters these lesions. This review summarizes various sources of endogenous base …
