Comparisons Of Unilateral And Limb Symmetry Indexes Between Fixed Dynamometry Testing Modes, Emily E. Frizzell
Honors College Theses
Hamstring muscles strains are extremely common and can vary in severity. The biarticular structure of the hamstring groups is one reason that they are more susceptible to injuries. The recurrence of these injuries is also common even after they have been through a rehabilitation phase in their recovery. This project aims to compare and associate knee flexion and extension muscle performance characteristics between isometric, isotonic, and isokinetic assessment modes. These different modes of assessment will test analyze muscle performance under varying muscle lengths, movement velocities and biomechanical load modes. The data collected from this testing will be analyzed to see …

The Impact Of Climate Change On Montanans’ Mental Health, Phoebe Bean
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Climate change poses many threats to human health, from vector-borne illnesses and food shortages to injuries and premature deaths related to extreme weather events. Less understood outcomes include the consequences of climate change for mental wellbeing; although the field of psychology examining these effects is growing, gaps in the literature regarding climate-related distress persist, particularly regarding the diverse ways in which people experience climate change-related psychosocial impacts and how they cope with distress. Thus, this study examined the impact of climate change on mental wellbeing through a comprehensive survey that sampled Montana residents across the state (n = 247). Results …
A Bioarchaeological Overview Of The Late Woodland Period Gooden Mound Group, Fulton County, Illinois, Aaron M. Durchholz
A Bioarchaeological Overview Of The Late Woodland Period Gooden Mound Group, Fulton County, Illinois, Aaron M. Durchholz
Theses and Dissertations
Extensive research in paleopathology has documented adverse effects accompanying a shift in subsistence strategy from largely nomadic, hunting and gathering lifestyles to those of more sedentary, agrarian systems. Comparative assessment of the human skeletal remains of early foragers and later farmers recovered from archaeological sites around the world have consistently demonstrated a decrease in average age at death in the latter.
Across the pre-Columbian North American Midwest, the transitional period between the Late Woodland and Mississippian periods, sometimes referred to as the terminal or Mississippian Acculturated Late Woodland, portended establishment of semi-permanent to permanent hamlets, increasingly reliant upon the adoption …

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Plant foods contain a diversity of biologically active compounds called phytochemicals, produced by plant species as secondary metabolites. A phytochemical group known as flavonoids has received much scientific attention in recent times with respect to their antioxidative and anti-inflammatory roles. This investigation examined how quercetin and naringenin, the most common dietary flavonoids, affect growth potential of yeast under optimal and stress conditions (temperature, glucose, and oxidative stress). Using Saccharomyces cerevisiae as a model, a dose dependency effect of quercetin and naringenin was observed under optimal conditions when liquid cultures were treated with three different concentrations (75 μM, 150 μM, and …
Gait Entrainment & Energetics Of Young Adults To Discrete Mediolateral Perturbations, Lindsey D. Lee
Gait Entrainment & Energetics Of Young Adults To Discrete Mediolateral Perturbations, Lindsey D. Lee
Graduate Thesis and Dissertation post-2024
Entrainment is a natural phenomenon that occurs with synchronization to a rhythmic stimulus which can be auditory, visual, or mechanical. An everyday example is walking next to someone and synchronizing your steps. Previous studies have explored entrainment from auditory cues, such as a metronome, and mechanical cues, such as an exoskeleton applying a force at the ankle. These studies have found entrainment is more likely to occur if the stimulation frequency is close to the person’s natural locomotion frequency. Previously we found when discrete mediolateral perturbations were applied on a treadmill, participants increased their speed and retained this increased speed …

Calcium Permeability Of Rat Trpv1 In A Close State When Expressed In Xenopus Laevis Oocytes, Zinnia Adhikary
Calcium Permeability Of Rat Trpv1 In A Close State When Expressed In Xenopus Laevis Oocytes, Zinnia Adhikary
Theses and Dissertations
Transient Receptor Potential V1 (TRPV1) is a nonselective cation channel, which is expressed in nociceptors/ pain detecting receptors. Activated by a wide variety of exogenous and endogenous physical and chemical stimuli such as heat, TRPV1 is involved in temperature detection, body temperature regulation, and pain perception. It is generally accepted that TRPV1's conductance to cations, including Ca2+, depends on its conformational change from a closed to an open state following gating. In the current study, I observed that the plasma membrane of Xenopus laevis oocytes, upon exogenous expression of rat TRPV1, exhibited weak permeability to Ca2+, as evidenced by the …

Molecular Determinants Of Trp Channel Gating, Briar J. Bell
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) ion channels are a family of proteins that contribute to a myriad of physiological functions. They have been extensively studied since their discovery 35 years ago; however, there are still many questions regarding the mechanisms by which they function. This family of proteins is characterized by a generally shared structure: an intracellular N terminus featuring ankyrin repeats, six transmembrane helices including the pore domain, a re-entrant loop and TRP helix, and an intracellular C terminus with varying structure. Each of these regions has been implicated in the regular function of TRPs, while mutations that alter trafficking …
Emerging Chromatin Regulators In Response To Heavy Metal Exposure, Wesley Saintilnord
Emerging Chromatin Regulators In Response To Heavy Metal Exposure, Wesley Saintilnord
Theses and Dissertations--Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry
Environmental exposure to heavy metals poses significant threats to human health as they are associated with various developmental and chronic pathologies such as reproductive defects and cancers. Despite their profound risks, a comprehensive understanding of their disease-causing mechanisms is lacking. Most studies point to reactive oxygen species-induced DNA damage; however, their mutagenic potential is relatively weak suggesting the involvement of alternative mechanisms. One important, yet underexplored mechanism, is their ability to rewire the epigenome via DNA methylation and histone variant incorporation, leading to aberrant gene regulatory networks.
This study investigates the epigenetic mechanisms targeted by two ubiquitous heavy metals with …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The deployment of military personnel to austere environments poses significant pulmonary health risks from inhalation of particulates including sand, dust, pollution, and heavy machinery exhaust. When particles are less than 10 µm in diameter, they can penetrate deep within the alveoli and embed within the protective lung surfactant monolayer. Here, absorption of surfactant lipids to the particle surface disrupts the essential monolayer configuration needed to reduce surface tension and prevent atelectasis, thus leading to disease. Currently, there are no in vitro surfactant-producing lung cell models capable of studying the effects of inhaled particles on the human pulmonary surfactant system. A549 …

The Pathophysiology Of The Death Of Jesus The Christ, C. Thomas Black
The Pathophysiology Of The Death Of Jesus The Christ, C. Thomas Black
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Centuries-long speculation continues regarding the circumstances surrounding the death of the Savior. Over the past century, the Savior’s tribulations between the Last Supper and his death on the cross have been scrupulously examined from a medical viewpoint. In this article I review many of these studies and, using current medical acumen, propose additional inferences and explanations based on scriptural, medical, and historical accounts. The evidence suggests that at some point between Gethsemane and his last moments on the cross, the Lord’s body was pushed beyond the limit that a normal mortal could endure. The Lord did, however, endure and completed …

Exploring Serotonin 1b Autoreceptor Mediated Regulation Of Serotonin Transporter In Female Mice, Sanyukta Jalihalkar
Exploring Serotonin 1b Autoreceptor Mediated Regulation Of Serotonin Transporter In Female Mice, Sanyukta Jalihalkar
Theses and Dissertations
Rationale: Serotonin (5-HT) is a crucial neurotransmitter involved in regulating various physiological processes. Dysregulation of the serotonergic system has been implicated in several neuropsychiatric disorders. Though numerous 5-HT receptors exist, the 5-HT transporter (SERT) is responsible for 5-HT clearance in the brain and periphery. 5-HT1Bautoreceptors regulate 5-HT release and interact with glycogen synthase kinase-3β (GSK3β), which can modulate SERT function via specific Ser44/48 phosphorylation sites. While these findings suggest a potential interplay between 5-HT1Band GSK3β-mediated SERT phosphorylation in regulating extracellular 5-HT, the primary causal molecular link remains unknown.
Objectives: To investigate if 5-HT1B activation by …
