Statewide Screening Of Signalized Intersections For Capacity Improvements, Saumabha Gayen, Enrique D. Saldivar-Carranza, Rahul Suryakant Sakhare, Jairaj Desai, Jijo K. Mathew, Nathan Shellhamer, Taylor Ruble, Dan Mccoy, Jack Gallagher, Darcy M. Bullock

JTRP Technical Reports

Identification of congested traffic signals that require capital investment to increase capacity has historically been a time-consuming process. Signalized intersections with congestion were analyzed to see if they could be improved through retiming, and capital investment was only considered if retiming is deemed infeasible. Automated Traffic Signal Performance Measures (ATSPMs), and more recently, signal performance measures (SPMs) derived from connected vehicle (CV) trajectory data, have already been used to streamline the process of identifying signalized intersections that can be improved through retiming. However, to date, similar efforts have not been used to identify intersections that may benefit from capital investment. …

Contextualizing The “Spanish Dream”: Using Critical Hrm To Understand Immigrant Homeownership In Spain, 2000–2009, Mario V. Gonzalez Fuentes, Jonathan Ross Gilbert, Robert F. Scherer, Carlos Iglesias-Fernandez

School of Business Faculty Research

Purpose A pronounced rise in postpandemic immigration is creating consumption opportunities and challenges for countries worldwide. Past research has shown that immigrant homeownership indicates advanced consumer acculturation. However, critical factors which differentiate immigrant decisions to purchase a home remain underexplored. This study aims to examine the importance of different identity resources in determining homeownership gaps between immigrant groups in Spain during a dynamic decade.

Design/methodology/approach A mixed methods research design with triangulation was used. First, the critical “historical research method” is used to empirically assess 15,465 household-level microdata files from the National Immigrant Survey of Spain. Second, the analysis is …

Following The Footprints Of Iron, Marve William Nelson

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

With the advent of lead isotope analysis in the 1960’s, metallurgic studies within archaeology have grown from their infancy of organizing artifacts into typological categorizations into their own sub-discipline of archaeology: archaeometallurgy. Archaeometallurgic researchers conducts muti-phase, chemistry-based, studies to determine provenance of source metal ores as well as microchemical and metallographic analyses to identify smelting and forging techniques, culminating in multidisciplinary studies which detect shifting commerce pathways and correlate them to periods of significant cultural change. The results of these studies have offered evidence for both verification and refutation of various previous hypotheses of cultural evolution through cultural transmission. Archaeometallurgy …

Contested Landscapes: The Origins And Consequences Of Rhode Island’S Land-Grant Institutions (1862-1892), Jenny Sullivan

Open Access Master's Theses

The Morrill Act of 1862 granted states thousands of acres of federal land, or land scrip for those states that did not have sufficient available public land, for the development of higher education institutions throughout the United States. Rhode Island was granted 120,000 acres of scrip to be located, sold, and then invested in stocks to create an endowment. The mismanagement of this allocation caused Rhode Island to earn the lowest cents/acre payout from the scrip lands. Land dispossession occurred on many levels, over many years, and the scars of these historic policies are still seen and felt today. However, …

Fingerprints And Fragments: Reflections On The Challenges And Contributions Of Socio-Legal History, Elizabeth Lhost Jan 2024

Fingerprints And Fragments: Reflections On The Challenges And Contributions Of Socio-Legal History, Elizabeth Lhost

Socio-Legal Review

To narrate law’s past, legal history depends on archives. Yet law’s archive, developed to serve law, necessarily dictates history’s terms. Critical legal history challenges this relationship. Inspired by trends in subaltern and postcolonial studies, critical legal historians push back against the dominance of doctrine. They bring the complexities of context and the vagaries of society, economy, and politics to bear on law’s story, framing law as part of, not separate from, history. To do this, critical legal historians challenge law’s archive. They interrogate what is said and what remains unsaid in the written record. They articulate the role that bureaucracy …

Evolving To Abstraction - Seclusion Of Efik And Ibibio Women From The Precolonial Era To The Present, Itunuoluwa Williams Jan 2024

Evolving To Abstraction - Seclusion Of Efik And Ibibio Women From The Precolonial Era To The Present, Itunuoluwa Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Female seclusion was an important cultural practice to the Efik and Ibibio peoples in southernmost Nigeria. Before the advent of Western education in the precolonial and colonial eras, it was particularly essential to the development of the girl child as she received a first-rate education and preparation for maturity, marriage, and motherhood. However, despite its crucial role in both cultural societies, studies on the Efik and Ibibio female seclusion cultures are far and in-between. Furthermore, the nkuho and mbopo – as they are called in Efik and Ibibio respectively – are often analyzed and presented as one singular entity, in …

Historicizing Same-Sex Marriage Debate In The Legal Periphery: Savigny, Nakagawa, And The Korean Marriage, Rama Hyeweon Kim Jan 2024

Historicizing Same-Sex Marriage Debate In The Legal Periphery: Savigny, Nakagawa, And The Korean Marriage, Rama Hyeweon Kim

Minnesota Journal of International Law, Vols. 28:2 onward (2019-present)

Global advocates for incorporating same-sex marriage into local family laws often argue for it using universal language of rights and nondiscrimination. They also contrast progressive countries with those that are behind in this respect. This Article resists a thin comparison driven by a universalist impulse and instead engages in an exploration of “local” family law in South Korea. Using the recent Supreme Court decision that extended spousal coverage of national health insurance to same-sex couples as an entry point, this Article offers brief histories of two distinct legal ideas and developments within Korean family law, both involving a deep and …

The Nature And Role Of Health Laws In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, Lehel Somogyi Jan 2024

The Nature And Role Of Health Laws In The Writings Of Ellen G. White, Lehel Somogyi

Master's Theses

The Topic

Since the founding of their denomination, Seventh-day Adventists have advocated a particular concept of health based on the visions and writings of denominational co-founder Ellen G. White (1827–1915). According to her writings, certain natural laws are crucial for maintaining health. These laws are often called “the laws of health” or “the eight laws of health” and include principles such as diet, exercise, water, temperance, and hygiene. In Seventh-day Adventist circles, Ellen G. White is usually perceived as the originator of these health principles. Some scholars suggest that she simply borrowed her health principles from other contemporary health reformers. …

Signature Moves? An Environmental Scan Of The Intersection Between Educational Development And Sotl, Laura Cruz, Hillary H. Steiner, Clare Cruz

International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching & Learning

Although the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) has been described as the signature pedagogy of educational development (a professional field focused on support for teaching and learning in higher education), there is little systematic evidence of the scale and scope of the SoTL support practices that centers for teaching and learning (CTLs) are currently using, how they are using them, and how these practices connect across the ecosystem of higher education. To understand the evolving intersection between educational development and SoTL, we used web scraping/content analysis to explore the current state of SoTL support at U.S.-based CTLs (as reflected …

Stable Oxygen Isotope Variability As A Proxy For Large-Scale Dynamics Of The South American Summer Monsoon, Rebecca Orrison Jan 2024

Stable Oxygen Isotope Variability As A Proxy For Large-Scale Dynamics Of The South American Summer Monsoon, Rebecca Orrison

Electronic Theses & Dissertations (2024 - present)

Terrestrial archives of oxygen isotope records are particularly important for the study of South American hydrology, where hydroclimate observations over the historical period are sparse and often not long enough to characterize multidecadal to centennial-scale changes. Knowledge of such low-frequency changes is critically important for interpreting and constraining projections of future change and detecting the emergence of forced change beyond the envelope of natural variability. This dissertation focuses on the past, present, and future of South American tropical and subtropical climate, with an emphasis on the mature phase of the monsoon season (December, January, and February; DJF) using oxygen isotopes …

"Where You Do Not Wish To Go": Petrine Ministry Between Charism And Institution, In The Thought Of Erich Przywara And Hans Urs Von Balthasar, Daniel Uremovic

Theses

Since the First Vatican Council’s solemn definition of papal primacy and infallibility, the Catholic ecclesial consciousness has been shaped by a unique form of devotion to the office of the Supreme Pontiff. While the scope of these charisms had been clearly defined and delimited, a sentiment described as “creeping infallibility” has nevertheless complicated the proper understanding of the Petrine office and its demands on the faithful. Before the episcopal college, local church communities, the laity at large, and the individual churchman, this office has been regularly viewed in tensions that feel the prerogatives either of institution or charism threated. Even …

Challenging The Myth Of Consensus: Irish Australian Voices In Perth During The Great War Conscription Referendums, Alexander Mcclure Jan 2024

Challenging The Myth Of Consensus: Irish Australian Voices In Perth During The Great War Conscription Referendums, Alexander Mcclure

Theses

The controversial conscription referendums of 1916 and 1917 in Australia saw a resurgence of religious sectarianism and a perceived entanglement with the aftermath of political violence in Ireland. Examining the voting outcomes in all the Australian states for the referendums may suggest that Western Australia stood against the nationwide trend of rejecting Prime Minister William Hughes’s proposals for compulsory military service. Analysis over the last thirty years has challenged this idea, which is that Western Australia showed a unique, widespread consensus during the Great War period. A greater understanding has developed with the increasing digital accessibility of wartime primary sources, …

Polyvictimization In Context: Identifying Patterns Of Peer, Dating, And Community Violence Among Black Early Adolescents, Carine Leslie Jan 2024

Polyvictimization In Context: Identifying Patterns Of Peer, Dating, And Community Violence Among Black Early Adolescents, Carine Leslie

Theses and Dissertations

Early adolescents exposed to multiple forms of victimization (“polyvictimization”) may experience a number of detrimental psychosocial outcomes. Some person-centered research has identified victimization subgroups among adolescents but have not examined the overlap of peer, dating, and community victimization among Black early adolescents living in economically disadvantaged urban communities. Thus, this study empirically identifies victimization profiles in a sample of Black early adolescents to ascertain the patterns and correlates of polyvictimization. The present study aimed to (a) identify subgroups of Black early adolescents based on their frequency of peer, dating, and community victimization using latent profile analyses, and (b) evaluate the …

Lessons Not Learned, Kyle Missbach Jan 2024

Lessons Not Learned, Kyle Missbach

War, Diplomacy, and Society (MA) Theses

In July 1936, Spain descended into chaos and civil war. Fascists in the military, Catholic Church, and aristocracy rebelled against a government elected to reform centuries old power structures. The United States reacted in surprise and joined France and Britain, staunchly refusing to be involved. For six months, the Department of State impeded attempts to material assist the Spanish government, until Congress passed an updated neutrality law prohibiting trade with Spain or the rebels. Congress again renewed and updated the law a year later. Yet in spring of 1939, at the end of the war, Franklin D. Roosevelt told his …

An Unconventional Etiquette: Emily Post And Etiquette In Society, In Business, In Politics, And At Home., Jillian Klean Zwilling

Iowa Journal of Communication

In 1922, Emily Post published, Etiquette in Society, In Business, In Politics and at Home, which became a national bestseller. While other etiquette manuals had been written up to that point, none has been so successful and enduring in the American consciousness as Post’s. In this article, I explore the rhetorical strategies Post employed in creating a text that follows the conventions of an etiquette manual but breaks the convention of exclusivity generally associated with etiquette texts. I argue Post was successful because of her uniquely American approach to etiquette. The success of Post’s text can be attributed to her …

Catherine De’ Médicis: Seeking Strength In Schism?, Melissa E. Cuzzo Jan 2024

Catherine De’ Médicis: Seeking Strength In Schism?, Melissa E. Cuzzo

Honors College Theses

Throughout history Catherine de’ Médicis has been seen as Machiavellian and deceitful. However, what has been largely ignored is that her style of governance has been based on that of male sovereigns before her. Her goal was to keep the Valois line intact in a time of upheaval. The actions in which the queen mother participated in were an attempt to quell dissent within France and to reinforce the social order of the Ancien Régime. This paper will argue that while Catherine de’ Médicis governmental strategies were not dissimilar to previous years, her authority was undermined by her gender, alien …

Clonal hematopoiesis (CH) is an independent risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Murine models of CH suggest a central role of inflammasomes and IL-1β in accelerated atherosclerosis and plaque destabilization. Here we show using single-cell RNA sequencing in human carotid plaques that inflammasome components are enriched in macrophages, while the receptor for IL-1β is enriched in fibroblasts and smooth muscle cells (SMCs). To address the role of inflammatory crosstalk in features of plaque destabilization, we conducted SMC fate mapping in Ldlr-/- mice modeling Jak2VF or Tet2 CH treated with IL-1β antibodies. Unexpectedly, this treatment minimally affected SMC differentiation, …

Pediatric cancer consists of a diverse group of rare diseases. Due to limited patient populations, standard randomized and controlled trials are often infeasible. As a result, single-arm trials are common in pediatric oncology and the use of external controls is often desirable or necessary to help generate actionable evidence and contextualize trial results. In this paper, we illustrate unique features in pediatric oncology clinical trials and describe their impact on the use of external controls. Various types of relevant external control data sources are described in terms of their utility and drawbacks. Statistical methodologies and design implications with external control …

Savings Associated With Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement With A Resilia Tissue Valve Based On Seven-Year Commence Trial Results, Tom Nguyen

All Publications

Background: Bioprostheses with RESILIA tissue demonstrate a reduction in calcification and improve health outcomes in pre-clinical and clinical studies. Prior economic analyses which relied on 5 years of evidence from the COMMENCE trial demonstrate financial savings for RESILIA tissue valves relative to mechanical valves after surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR). Given the recent release of 7-year COMMENCE data, this economic evaluation updates the estimate for long-run savings of bioprosthetic valves with RESILIA.

Methods: Simulation models estimated disease progression across two hypothetical SAVR cohorts (tissue vs. mechanical) of 10,000 patients each in the US. The primary comparison calculated the SAVR-related expenditures …

Anne Frank is linked to her contemporaries in about 80% of 18 English-language published and produced plays. The remaining plays pair Frank and African American icons Harriet Tubman, Emmett Till, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Research on dramatic literature with Frank as a character, the writing of plays linking her with African American personages, or history, analysis, or comparison of the process of multiple plays about Frank does not exist. A few articles extant compare the Goodrich and Hackett play with the Kesselman rewrite, a dissertation on five plays about Frank (those five plays are in the 80% mentioned earlier). …

The Lived Experiences Of Sex Offenders: Perceptions Of Pedophilic Offenders Regarding Engagement In Community Treatment, Ali K. Madrid

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Pedophilia is a complex, multifaceted disorder that has existed, in some form, throughout all of human history. It was not until 1952, with the inception of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-1), that it was officially characterized as a psychiatric disorder. Treatment options have included surgeries, medications, cognitive behavior therapy, combined treatments (antiandrogenic drug and psychotherapy), and preventative programs. Pedophilic offenders released to the community must complete approved treatment. The community treatment may be manualized, evidence-based and likely to be effective. However, the offender must be willing and able to access the treatment resources. Participation in community …
