Examination Of The Differences And Similarities In The Classification Of Multiple Homicide Perpetrators, Lucy M. Papp Jan 2024

Examination Of The Differences And Similarities In The Classification Of Multiple Homicide Perpetrators, Lucy M. Papp

Theses and Dissertations

The applied dissertation compares the lifestyle and behavioral characteristics of mass, serial, and spree murderers. Historically, studies have focused on serial murder according to the perpetrator's typology or indicators at the crime scene. The current topics of research lack a comparison of these classifications. While the classification and described typologies are essential for academic and investigative purposes, understanding the impactful lifestyle factors of these perpetrators may also serve as an essential factor in predictive analysis, victimology, and the motive behind their heinous crimes.

The researcher collected data on the classifications for each type of multiple homicide perpetrator: mass, serial, and …

Through A Glass Darkly: Tplf Viewed Through A Procedural Lens, Richard L. Marcus Jan 2024

Through A Glass Darkly: Tplf Viewed Through A Procedural Lens, Richard L. Marcus

Faculty Scholarship

Legal responses to litigation funding could take many forms—consumer protection, regulation of interest rates and fees, perhaps even prohibition (as under the old doctrines of champerty and maintenance). In the U.S., procedural responses, often emphasizing disclosure of funding, have featured prominently. From the perspective of one directly involved in the U.S. rulemaking effort, this Article explores the challenges of designing such a rule. Among other things, it notes that litigation funding actually could support important law-implementation features of American litigation. But a host of uncertainties mean that for the present, the future of mandated disclosure of funding remains unclear, as …

The Monster Mash: A Monster Studies Approach To Literature In The University Classroom, Megan L. Bowen Jan 2024

The Monster Mash: A Monster Studies Approach To Literature In The University Classroom, Megan L. Bowen

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

The Monster Mash is a course proposal for an upper-division undergraduate literature course focused on exploring monsters in literature and building connections between classic and more contemporary texts using high-impact practices (HIPs) with student success in mind. I build on previous work in the field of Monster Studies and introduce my own original monster pattern that prompts students to interpret monsters as they trek through Origin, Separation, Power, Threat, and Diminishment. This pattern highlights commonalities when it comes to the representation of monsters and their stories, allowing students to identify them across texts. I also divide monsters into three categories …

The Role Played By Non-Formal Education In The Lives Of Iraqi-British Citizens: A Study Of Three Iraqi-British Cultural Institutions And How Non-Formal Education Empowers Individuals And Communities, Nadeem Al-Abdalla

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences Theses

This thesis highlights the role played by non-formal education in the lives of Iraqi community members who participate in the activities offered by London’s Iraqi-British cultural centres. The key aims of this thesis were; to research, document and analyse London’s Iraqi community and their experiences of non-formal learning within Iraqi cultural centres; and to establish the extent to which they found their participation in this non-formal learning empowering, both at an individual and community level. Many studies have been conducted into the lives of newly arrived communities. Generally, these studies tend to focus on their early years in the UK …

Valuation’S Role In The Investment Decisions Process A Mixed Method Study, Joseph D. Foresi Jan 2024

Valuation’S Role In The Investment Decisions Process A Mixed Method Study, Joseph D. Foresi

Open Access Dissertations

The inspiration for this dissertation began as a practitioner. As a Wall Street equity analyst, I calculated the valuation of various types of stocks using relative and intrinsic valuation methods on a daily basis. I noticed an interesting phenomenon while performing these calculations. The estimated stock prices were often largely disconnected from the actual stock market price leading me to wonder what the role of estimated valuations was in the overall investment process.

I believe there is a separation between a stock’s market price and fundamental value consistent with the “Noise” Trader Model (NTM). If this is true, a researcher …

Background: Antiangiogenic therapy had been tested in urothelial cancer (UC) without reaching the clinic.

Objective: We provide a systematic review and meta-analysis of trials to assess efficacy of immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) combined with antiangiogenic agents in UC.

Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched for trials with at least one arm of patients with UC treated with ICI plus antiangiogenics. Data were analyzed with the "meta" package from R using a one-staged frequentist meta-analysis.

Results: After screening 13,708 titles and abstracts, 9 studies were selected for analysis with 14 identified cohorts comprising 621 patients: 448 were ICI-naïve (ICI-N) and 173 …

Love And Solitude In Latin America: An Actor’S Take, Performing Graciela In Diatriba De Amor Para Un Hombre Sentado By Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Claudia C. Sevilla Jan 2024

Love And Solitude In Latin America: An Actor’S Take, Performing Graciela In Diatriba De Amor Para Un Hombre Sentado By Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Claudia C. Sevilla

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In this thesis I take a journey through twentieth century Latin America through inhabiting the role of Graciela created by the late great Gabriel Garcia Marquez in his only work of theatre. Through detailed historical research I explore human topics such as marriage and isolation embodied in Graciela that in a sense mirror a people and a continent. The challenges of producing a play with no budget or partners and the freedoms and constraints of performing a one-person show, which included an audience that does not speak the language the play is written in. How does an actor adapt to …

Investigating The Role Of Spinal Motoneuron Organization In Human Motor Control, Rachel I. Taitano Jan 2024

Investigating The Role Of Spinal Motoneuron Organization In Human Motor Control, Rachel I. Taitano

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Mechanisms of voluntary motor control are complex and require inputs via cortical centers, peripheral sensory systems, and spinal inputs such as central pattern generators. It is hypothesized that control is simplified via utilization of motor primitives, which may rely on structures within the spinal cord, however this remains unknown in both human and non-human primates. The goal of this dissertation is to characterize muscle activity in the upper extremity in relation to the corresponding anatomical organization of spinal motoneurons to provide insight into how primitives are both organized and activated to produce movement.

The first aim of this work was …

A Legacy Of Labor: Maternity Narratives In 1960s And 1970s North American Life Writing, Katelynn Ann Vogelpohl

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Abstract

A Legacy of Labor: Maternity Narratives in 1960s and 1970s North American Life Writing

Katelynn Ann Vogelpohl

The phenomenon of maternity has been repeatedly described as an event that shakes the very foundations of social and physical identity. As the flesh of the pregnant person literally divides to produce new life, one subject becomes enclosed within another, dramatically affecting the pregnant person’s sense of self and causing a confluence of intense, and often conflicting, feelings. In North America, there are two dominant, and seemingly opposing, discourses on pregnancy and childbirth: the institutional medical discourse and the natural childbirth discourse. …

Beyond Discrimination: Market Humiliation And Private Law, Hila Keren Jan 2024

Beyond Discrimination: Market Humiliation And Private Law, Hila Keren

University of Colorado Law Review

Market humiliation is a corrosive relational process to which the law repeatedly fails to respond due to the law’s heavy reliance on the discrimination paradigm. In this process, providers of market resources, from housing and work to goods and services, use their powers to reject or mistreat other market users due to their identities. They thus cause users severe harm and deprive them of dignified participation in the marketplace. The problem has recently reached a peak. The discussion in 303 Creative v. Elenis indicates that the Supreme Court might legitimize market humiliation by granting private providers broad free speech exemptions …

Police Vigilantism, Nadia Banteka Jan 2024

Police Vigilantism, Nadia Banteka

Scholarly Publications

This Article uncovers a critical yet unexplored dimension of policing: the strategic oscillation of police officers between their roles as state actors and private individuals, and its significant implications for police accountability frameworks. As officers toggle between these two roles to their legal advantage, they exploit a deep, systemic flaw in the structural design of policing. Tracing the trajectory of policing from its vigilante origins to its institutionalized form today, this Article argues that contemporary policing merges state-sanctioned power with vestiges of vigilantism to blur the public-private divide. This duality enables a form of state-sanctioned vigilantism through which officers exploit …
