Lds Perspectives On The Atonement?, Blake T. Ostler Jan 2024

Lds Perspectives On The Atonement?, Blake T. Ostler

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

Latter-day Saint Perspectives on Atonement promises to provide new perspectives on the atonement that reflect awareness of scriptural and theological scholarship. The essays on the scriptural background are solid. The essays providing theological perspectives are uneven, at best. Indeed, the theological essays show little awareness of the major works in philosophical theology in the last sixty years—with one notable exception. Moreover, a feminist perspective that argues against seeing Christ’s blood that he shed as an appropriate basis for atonement theory receives the greatest attention. This review elucidates, explores, assesses, and critiques these approaches.

Aftermath Of The Martyrdom: Aspirants To The Mantle Of The Prophet Joseph Smith, R. Jean Addams

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In the weeks, months, and years following the murders of the Prophet Joseph Smith and his brother, Hyrum, several aspirants stepped forward to claim the mantle of the prophet. Who were these individuals with claims to the leadership of the church? What were their motives? How were these men able to inspire large numbers of saints to follow them? What became of their efforts and how are their works manifest in the present day? The reasons that members or prospective members chose or rejected the claims of these aspirants are examined, as are the churches of the organizations that were …

The first edition of this booklet, An Overview of the Evolution of Bowling Green State University Athletics Programs, 1941-2015 by Professor Emeritus Janet Parks, was published in 2015. That publication had two objectives: (1) to record the long and close relationship between the BGSU athletic department and the health & physical education department, and (2) to provide information about the history of BGSU women’s athletics.

With respect to relationships between health & physical education and athletics, the revised edition retains the information that was in the 2015 version. It supplements that information with descriptions of personnel and structural decisions made …

Inhabiting Numbers: Weaving, Polyphony, And Embodied Mathematics, Kristine Barrett Jan 2024

Inhabiting Numbers: Weaving, Polyphony, And Embodied Mathematics, Kristine Barrett

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

Inhabiting Numbers: Polyphony as Woven Sound explores connections between vocal polyphony and textile practices, specifically weaving and spinning. Rather than consider music and weaving as separate from one another, the following paper presents the ways in which they are deeply intertwined and mutually constitutive forms of cultural expression. The technical modes of thinking produced through repetition inherent in both—particularly as practices utilizing complex mathematical structures—produce ways of thinking unique to each. Through practice, I suggest these technical modes of making transit across different materials and mediums—in both explicit and implicit ways. The music created through the interweaving of multiple voices …

“To Happily Lay The Foundation Of Patriotism In One Single Englishman”: Women, History Texts, And The Construction Of English National Identity, 1820-1870, Katrina Denman Jan 2024

“To Happily Lay The Foundation Of Patriotism In One Single Englishman”: Women, History Texts, And The Construction Of English National Identity, 1820-1870, Katrina Denman

CGU Theses & Dissertations

Existing historiography on nationalist pedagogy in nineteenth century England has not focused on women as major contributors to this process through their authorship of historical texts. This dissertation argues that school history texts authored by women in Romantic and Victorian England imbued an intentional brand of English national identity based on Protestant moralism in their readers. It specifically focuses on conversational histories, or texts structured around historical description followed by prescribed “conversations” between teacher and listener, which both anticipated potential questions from young readers and provided a scripted narrative for answering them in a way that fit the larger didactic …

Gender Identity And Birth Certificates: The Surrogacy Nexus, Richard F. Storrow Jan 2024

Gender Identity And Birth Certificates: The Surrogacy Nexus, Richard F. Storrow

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This Article confronts and responds to the weaponization of birth certificates in recent controversies around gender identity by drawing parallels between gender identity and intentional parentage. A juxtaposition of gender identity with parentage identity reveals that they share the common underpinning of self-identification, raising the question why birth certificates are permitted to reflect one’s parentage identity but, as has been suggested in numerous controversies involving transgender litigants, not one’s gender identity. This Article argues that, for the same reasons that a surrogacy arrangement permits the parties to it to define for themselves who are the legal parents of the child …

An Analysis Of Teacher Characteristics And Perceptions Of Grading Practices On Student Grade Outcomes, Michael B. Meechin Jan 2024

An Analysis Of Teacher Characteristics And Perceptions Of Grading Practices On Student Grade Outcomes, Michael B. Meechin

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship, if any, between teachers' grade distributions and other moderating factors (i.e., teacher perceptions of grading practices as indicated on the Teacher Perceptions of Grading Practices Survey (TPGPS), grade level taught, enrollment in teacher preparation program, and grading practice methodology). A Pearson correlation was used to research statistical significance in the relationship of a teacher’s perceptions of grading practices as measured by the TPGPS and their grade distribution (as measured by an average of scores, calculated on a 4.0 scale, in one course over one academic quarter). A one-way ANOVA was …

The Image Of Imam Al-Jawad, Peace Be Upon Him, According To The American Orientalist Dwight Donaldson, Hawraa Abdul Nasser Al-Ramahi Jan 2024

The Image Of Imam Al-Jawad, Peace Be Upon Him, According To The American Orientalist Dwight Donaldson, Hawraa Abdul Nasser Al-Ramahi

NJF Islamic University Journal

One of the most well-known Western figures of the 1930s was the orientalist Dwight Donaldson (1884–1976), who travelled to Ahl al-Bayt to visit the Shiites and their imams' shrines in an attempt to paint a clear picture of their history. Nevertheless, it is an early virtue noted for the Westerner who attempted to write as much as possible about the exploratory excursions to Iraq from trustworthy sources like Al-Majlisi, Al-Kafi, and others.

The study explores Imam Al-Jawad's biography and his relationship with Al-Abbasin, focusing on the Abbasid caliphate, Al-Mamoun's relationship, and Donaldson's biography. It explores the historical context of Baghdad …

A Closer Look At The Humanistic Aspects Of The Opioid Epidemic And Its Implications For Pharmaceutical Ethics And Law, Eriel Burns

Gaines Fellow Senior Theses

This paper elucidates the humanistic elements of this crisis, that is, the ethical challenges it poses and the role of culture in it. The opioid crisis disturbs several bioethics principles as indicated by the fact that it burgeoned out of the health care system as opposed to the illicit environments of the underground market. The book Dreamland by investigative journalist and storyteller, Sam Quinones encapsulates the complexity of the opioid epidemic through research and interviews with important figures related to the crisis such as physicians, people with opioid use disorder, and pharmaceutical sales representatives, among others. Quinones details that the …

Taste And Learning In The Gustatory Cortex, Martin Raymond Jan 2024

Taste And Learning In The Gustatory Cortex, Martin Raymond

Alternative Theses and Dissertations (AETDs)

This research investigates the organization of taste representations in the gustatory cortex (GC) through two experiments utilizing miniscope imaging in mice. The first experiment focuses on conditioned taste aversion (CTA) and reveals that taste representations in GC are heavily dominated by palatability, with shifts in representational space occurring as a function of learning and extinction. The second experiment explores the interrelation of aversive stimuli, the impact of novelty on taste representations, and the role of somatosensory feedback. Findings suggest that familiarity and palatability emerge as positive signals with experience, shaping taste representations in GC. The study contributes to a nuanced …

"The Feminist Coven Did It": Nigerian Women's Feminist Leadership And Coalition Against Police Brutality During The 2020 #Endsars Protests, Bright Alozie Jan 2024

"The Feminist Coven Did It": Nigerian Women's Feminist Leadership And Coalition Against Police Brutality During The 2020 #Endsars Protests, Bright Alozie

Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations

The 2020 #EndSARS protest—a movement against police brutality and state violence in Nigeria—is an excellent locale for the historical study of African women’s activism and contributions to social movements. Young Nigerian women actively spearheaded this movement. Employing oral history methods, social media, and other primary sources, I place these women at the center of the narratives surrounding the #EndSARS protest. Their exceptional leadership and coordination contributed to the success of the most extensive youth-led protests in Nigeria’s contemporary history. In locating their individual and collective activism, I argue that history provided the roadmap for how they did effective activism since …

International Economic Law And Its Histories, Valentina Vadi Jan 2024

International Economic Law And Its Histories, Valentina Vadi

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

International economic law is best defined as the branch of public international law that governs transnational economic relations, that is, international trade, foreign direct investment, and currency exchange. It is a field that mixes and mingles law and economics. Economic theory has predominated in international economic law literature. Yet, international economic law is not just about money, trade, and capital flows. It is also about individual lives, collective destinies, and interactions among different civilizations.

The historical evolution of global economic governance remains understudied. Yet, investigating the history of international economic law is timely and important because we can learn from …

Software Company Workplace Bias In Technical Communication, Amanda Altamirano

Graduate Thesis and Dissertation 2023-2024

This dissertation is an interdisciplinary work that explores the intersection of humanities and technical communication by focusing on the presence and impact of software company workplace bias in technical professional communication. It focuses on workplace bias in technical communication because, when present, bias can impact the experiences that technical communicators and end-users (people who use the software) have with the software. This mixed-methods study consists of a survey, an interview, and a new diagram designed to help technical communicators mitigate biases in technical documentation. To understand better the presence and impact of bias in these workplace contexts, this study surveys …

Thailand Magic Amulets And Their Multimillion Baht Demand, Ainsley Jong Jan 2024

Thailand Magic Amulets And Their Multimillion Baht Demand, Ainsley Jong

Asian Review

This paper seeks to explore and understand the making of Thai magic amulets and whether they are worth the value that makes their believers sometimes pay millions of baht for them, especially when there are many counterfeits. Looking at some of the most sought-after amulets, we learn why these magic amulets have an especially strong following among the Thai and even from visitors overseas. For the collectors of these amulets, there is this innate belief that they are made by powerful monks, who bless them and give the amulets magical powers, which are then transferred to the owner, thus giving …

An Analysis Of Newspaper Coverage Of Far-Flung Counties In Kenya, Henix Obuchunju Jan 2024

An Analysis Of Newspaper Coverage Of Far-Flung Counties In Kenya, Henix Obuchunju

Master of Arts in Digital Journalism

Slums are a reflection of underdeveloped and marginalisation. It is so yet the traditional watchdog genre of journalism and the commercial press are both as old as the slums themselves. Past studies show that community radios are struggling with feedback. As such they are yet to assess their value to the world. This study sought to assess the impact of the Mukuru kwa Ruben-based Ruben FM in addressing the socio- economic needs of its listeners; and whether it is advancing the tenets of Solutions Journalism practice. That is; coverage of solutions rather than the problems. The study relied on a …

Photographic Memory: Expanding “News Deserts” Threaten To Erase The Visual Record Of Contemporary American History, Frank D. Lomonte, Lila Greenberg

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

As local newspapers close their doors across America, one of the unheralded casualties of their demise may be the loss of the institutional memory of their communities. Photo morgues maintained by newsroom librarians are an invaluable reference for researchers and filmmakers seeking to trace the visual history of localities. While some forward-thinking news organizations have donated their archival photos for preservation, there appears to be no industrywide plan for doing so, meaning that countless thousands of unpublished—but historically valuable—photos are at risk of destruction as cost-cutting newspapers eliminate their libraries, sell off their buildings, or go out of business entirely. …

Publishing Power: A Historiographical Investigation Into Treatments Of American Slave Narratives, Maya Sachs Jan 2024

Publishing Power: A Historiographical Investigation Into Treatments Of American Slave Narratives, Maya Sachs

Honors Theses

The purpose of this project is to document and analyze the factors that contributed to periods of interest in, and literature/scholarship on, American slave narratives, with particular emphasis on the role of publishers and publication (or non-publication). The specific historiographical survey focuses on three distinct time periods: 1845 to 1929, the 1960s through the 1980s, and the 2000s through the 2020s, with the epilogue focusing on the most recent scholarship. I have chosen these time periods because they represent periods in which there were notable evolutions in the ways the narratives have been studied in America, many of which can …

International Bestsellers And The Online Reconfiguring Of National Identity, Rachel Noorda, Millicent Weber, Melanie Ramdarshan Bold

English Faculty Publications and Presentations

International bestsellers are the ideal sites for examining the complicated relationship between literary culture and national identity. Despite the transnational turns in both literary studies and book history, place is still an important configurer of twenty-first-century book reception. Books are crucial to national identity and catalysts of nationalist movements. On an individual level, books enable readers to shape and maintain their own national identities. This Element explores how contemporary readers' understandings of nation, race/ethnicity, gender, and class continue to shape their reading, using as case studies the online reception of three bestseller titles-Liane Moriarty's Big Little Lies (Australia), Zadie Smith's …

The Capacity Of An Unfaltering Duress: America's Lost Love Stories, Seth Shimmelfarb-Wells

English Honors Papers

This thesis interrogates the imbrication between negative subjectivity and the fiction writing of Gayl Jones. In doing so, this work reimagines conceptions of intimate and interpersonal love, community, and retributive violence in the face of conditional (anti)Blackness. Through an engagement with contemporary scholars of Black Studies and with the help of the abundant archive of Black music, this project aims to prioritize, reproduce, and heed to Black Artistic registers of feeling that embrace duress, destruction, and madness. Through her literary performance, Jones reproduces and fabulates moments of Black social life that expand and simultaneously shatter our conception of a given …

American Catholics And The Quest For Equality In The Civil War Era, David Endres Jan 2024

American Catholics And The Quest For Equality In The Civil War Era, David Endres

Civil War Book Review

In American Catholics and the Quest for Equality in the Civil War Era, Robert Emmett Curran argues that nineteenth-century America did not offer equal opportunities for Blacks, Native Americans, Jews, Catholics, and women. Curran, a professor emeritus of history at Georgetown University, focuses on Catholics’ pursuit of equality from 1846 to 1877, showcasing their transformation from “internal aliens” to full-fledged citizens, which did not prevent them from seeking to deprive others, especially African Americans, of the same.

Studying Conspiracy Theory After The (Current) Rise Of Right-Wing Populism, Mark Fenster Jan 2024

Studying Conspiracy Theory After The (Current) Rise Of Right-Wing Populism, Mark Fenster

UF Law Faculty Publications

The American historian Richard Hofstadter intended his still-influential essay on the “Paranoid Style in American Politics,” which initiated the modern study of conspiracy theories, as a response to the mid-1950s rise of right-wing populism in the US. Reflecting on the lessons we can learn from the insights and weaknesses of Hofstadter’s timely intervention into contemporary politics, as well as the author’s three decades studying conspiracy theories, the chapter asks how current academic work, which takes place within and responds to another rise in rightwing populism, should understand and intervene in the present and prepare for the future.
