Integrating Sustainability And Food Safety Through Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment And Life Cycle Assessment Of Low-Moisture Foods, Jessica Bain
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Food safety and sustainability are critical concerns in the food industry. However, these areas are often evaluated separately, leading to an incomplete understanding of the overall impact of food production on human health. This dissertation aims to integrate food safety with sustainability to provide a comprehensive assessment of the impact of low-moisture foods on human health, using the almond processing supply chain as a case study.
In addition to conducting life cycle assessments (LCA) of almond processing, wheat flour production, and dried apple processing, this dissertation aims to create a framework to bridge the gap between sustainability and food safety. …

Black Lives Still Matter: Freedom Schools As An Embodiment Of Critical Literacy Through Reflection And Action, Elena M. Venegas, Lakia M. Scott
Bilingual and Literacy Studies Faculty Publications
The continuation of racial inequities in the United States has ignited the recent Black Lives Matter Movement, a protest of police brutality and gun violence. Black lives matter in public school classrooms, too—where students of color face barriers to equitable educational experiences. The Children's Defense Fund Freedom School program is a major component in developing critical literacy skills through critique, inquiry, and transformation through social justice and action. Critical literacy is enacted through identity—mainly as difference, self, consciousness, narrative, and positionality. Historical and contemporary relevance of Freedom Schools connects to the urgency of the Black Lives Matter Movement.
The Role Of Epigenetic Aberrations In The Cold Tumor Phenotype And Inflammatory Signaling In High-Risk Neuroblastoma, Pamela Morgan Watson
The Role Of Epigenetic Aberrations In The Cold Tumor Phenotype And Inflammatory Signaling In High-Risk Neuroblastoma, Pamela Morgan Watson
Alternative Theses and Dissertations (AETDs)
Neuroblastoma (NB) is a highly aggressive, heterogeneous disease that arises from the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and originates from neural crest cells (NCCs) (1). NB is the most common extracranial cancer in pediatric accounts for 15% of pediatric cancer deaths (2). This high mortality rate is the result of the metastatic, immune evasive, and treatment resistant characteristics of the disease (3). It has been proposed that NB arises from blocks in differentiation during development, resulting in a mixture of two distinct cell types within the tumor: mesenchymal and adrenergic (Figure 1.1) (4,5). The adrenergic cell type is more differentiated, and …

Background: Higher cruciferous vegetable intake is associated with lower cardiovascular disease risk in observational studies. The pathways involved remain uncertain. We aimed to determine whether cruciferous vegetable intake (active) lowers 24-h brachial systolic blood pressure (SBP; primary outcome) compared to root and squash vegetables (control) in Australian adults with mildly elevated BP (SBP 120–160 mmHg inclusive). Methods: In this randomized, controlled, crossover trial, participants completed two 2-week dietary interventions separated by a 2-week washout. Cruciferous vegetables were compared to root and squash vegetables (~ 300 g/day) consumed with lunch and dinner meals. Participants were blinded to which interventions were the …

Controllable and reproducible animal models of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) are crucial for the systematic study of the pathophysiology and treatment of this debilitating condition. However, current animal models have not been successful in replicating the pathology and disabilities seen in SAH patients, especially the long-term neurocognitive deficits that affect the survivor's quality of life. Therefore, there is an unmet need to develop experimental models that reliably replicate the long-term clinical ramifications of SAH - especially in mice where genetic manipulations are straightforward and readily available. To address this need, a standardized mouse SAH model is developed that reproducibly produced …

Size Matters: The Characterization Of Telomere Function In Germ Cell Development In Danio Rerio, Jessica Macneil
Graduate Doctoral Dissertations
Infertility is a growing problem worldwide. According to the WHO, 48 million couples across the globe suffer from infertility and many couples turn to Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) to become pregnant. One readout of gamete quality and successful ART is telomere integrity because telomeres are necessary for chromosome movements during meiosis so that the segregation of chromosomes happens correctly. Telomeres are well known for their role in aging; however, they play an important and understudied role during meiosis. In meiosis, telomeres attach to the nuclear envelope (NE) via a protein chain spanning the NE that interacts with cytoplasmic motor proteins, …

Genetic testing for prenatal diagnosis in the pre-genomic era primarily focused on detecting common fetal aneuploidies, using methods that combine maternal factors and imaging findings. The genomic era, ushered in by the emergence of new technologies like chromosomal microarray analysis and next-generation sequencing, has transformed prenatal diagnosis. These new tools enable screening and testing for a broad spectrum of genetic conditions, from chromosomal to monogenic disorders, and significantly enhance diagnostic precision and efficacy. This chapter reviews the transition from traditional karyotyping to comprehensive sequencing-based genomic analyses. We discuss both the clinical utility and the challenges of integrating prenatal exome and …

To optimize personalized treatment strategies and extend patients' survival times, it is critical to accurately predict patients' prognoses at all stages, from disease diagnosis to follow-up visits. The longitudinal biomarker measurements during visits are essential for this prediction purpose. Patients' ultimate concerns are cure and survival. However, in many situations, there is no clear biomarker indicator for cure. We propose a comprehensive joint model of longitudinal and survival data and a landmark cure model, incorporating proportions of potentially cured patients. The survival distributions in the joint and landmark models are specified through flexible hazard functions with the proportional hazards as …

Immunosuppression in malignant glioma remains a barrier to therapeutic development. CD83 overexpression in human and mouse glioma increases survival. CD83+ tumor cells promote signatures related to cytotoxic T cells, enhanced activation of CD8+ T cells, and increased proinflammatory cytokines. These findings suggest that tumor-expressed CD83 could mediate tumor-immune communications.

Behaviorism Literature Review On School Suspension And The School To Prison Pipeline, Joelle Tidwell
Behaviorism Literature Review On School Suspension And The School To Prison Pipeline, Joelle Tidwell
Curriculum and Instruction Undergraduate Honors Theses
An analysis of the current body of research about the school to prison pipeline demonstrates that exclusionary practices are indicators for which students will encounter the criminal justice system in their youth and adulthood. Moreover, exclusionary practices are associated with a variety of other negative outcomes such as poor mental health, poor physical health, and lower wages. This research demonstrates the need for exclusionary practices to be replaced with school-wide behavioral supports that will provide intervention and strategies for students that help keep them in the classroom instead of simply punishing them with isolation.

Familial dysautonomia (FD) is a rare genetic neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative disorder. In addition to the autonomic and peripheral sensory neuropathies that challenge patient survival, one of the most debilitating symptoms affecting patients' quality of life is progressive blindness resulting from the steady loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs).Within the FD community, there is a concerted effort to develop treatments to prevent the loss of RGCs. However, the mechanisms underlying the death of RGCs are not well understood. To study the mechanisms underlying RGC death, Pax6-cre;Elp1loxp/loxp male and female mice and postmortem retinal tissue from an FD patient were used to …

Carceral Apartheid: Centering State Responsibility For The Racial Order, Ion Meyn
Cardozo Law Review
Racial harms are often attributed to private ordering. But the power of White communities to subordinate communities of color is not a constellation of private acts independent of state violence. When scrutinized, acts of racial exclusion, segregation, and violence persist to the extent they are aligned with the political order and backed by the state’s violent guarantee. The knowledge that any resistance to these acts will be met with state retribution bristles in the background.
There are different ways in which state violence produces and reproduces the racial order: (1) direct violence; (2) a violent guarantee backing communal acts of …

Human Capital Disclosure & Corporate Governance: The New Evidence, George S. Georgiev
Cardozo Law Review
This Article explores the evolution of human capital disclosure—firm-supplied information about various workforce-related matters—as a factor in contemporary corporate governance. Regulatory and nonregulatory developments from recent years have upended longstanding practices and generated extensive new evidence. Most notably, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) adopted a human capital management (“HCM”) disclosure mandate in 2020, which, though long overdue, was criticized from the outset for its modest scope and lax design. In the meantime, courts have taken a renewed interest in board of directors’ oversight responsibilities in a number of areas, including HCM, while labor’s power has unexpectedly increased in some …

Predetermined Event Wagering And Betting On The Past, Emmaline Friederichs
Cardozo Law Review
The newfound freedom of states to legalize sports betting following the demise of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act in 2018 has led to rapid growth of the sports betting market. In an attempt to further capitalize on the appetite for sports wagering, states and sportsbooks have recently started to expand their offerings by opening betting lines on entertainment award shows. This move, paired with WWE’s recent interest in entering the market, has raised concerns that predetermined events are particularly vulnerable to event manipulation and betting using insider information. This Note argues that the current state regulatory schemes are …

A One-Egg Wonder: Working To Cure Judicial Gender Bias And Increase Access To Pre-Embryos For Infertile Parties, Nicole Marks Kaufman
Cardozo Law Review
The first live birth of a child conceived from in vitro fertilization (“IVF”) happened in 1978. Today, over eight million children have been born through IVF procedures. The first dispute over the resulting pre-embryos was in 1990 when the Tennessee Supreme Court outlined a balancing approach with a presumption favoring non-use of the pre-embryos for courts to follow when resolving these matters. Numerous states have taken differing approaches—some have taken a contractual approach, others an approach requiring contemporaneous mutual consent before there can be a departure from the status quo, and very few state legislatures have directly addressed how to …
