Relationship Between The Transition To Remote Work And Job Satisfaction, Eric Wong
Relationship Between The Transition To Remote Work And Job Satisfaction, Eric Wong
JWU Dissertations & Theses
The purpose of this qualitative descriptive research study was to explore how employees who had not worked remotely before, and who began remote jobs, describe the benefits and challenges they experienced during their transition to remote work. Using Maslow’s (1943) hierarchy of needs as the theoretical framework, 10 participants were interviewed regarding the benefits and challenges associated with remote work. Results revealed that the benefits of transitioning to remote work largely increased job satisfaction and job performance. These benefits included limited or no commuting to work, enhanced flexibility in work schedules, reduced or less anxiety during work, and increased family …

Aerodynamic Noise Reduction Of Wind Turbine Blades, Steven Davenport
Aerodynamic Noise Reduction Of Wind Turbine Blades, Steven Davenport
Honors Theses
This project is presented to meet Western Michigan University’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Senior Design requirements. With wind turbines becoming increasingly popular as a form of energy generation, the need to reduce the aerodynamic noise is needed. Most commercial wind farms use turbines with a NACA 0012 airfoil. Thus, that is the only profile shape considered in this research. Seven modifications were made to a NACA 0012 airfoil to reduce aerodynamic noise. The airfoils were designed in SolidWorks and 3D printed at the WMU College of Aviation. The airfoils were simulated in Ansys Fluent and experimentally tested in …

Superoxide dismutase enzymes are a major defense against superoxide, which is a potent reactive oxygen species. Misregulation of reactive oxygen species and subsequent neuronal damage are etiological hallmarks of neurodegenerative disease. Macrocyclic small molecules have offered inroads toward functional SOD1 mimics. Herein, we report a series of five tetra-aza macrocyclic RPy2N2 ligands, varied by 4-position substitution of the pyridine ring with both electron-donating (R = OMe) and withdrawing groups (R = Cl, I, and CF3) to offer the first comparison to well-studied RPyN3 congeners and other mimics in the literature. New ligands …
An In-Depth Investigation Into Yersinia Pestis Phages: Isolating A Yersinia Pestis Phage From Soil And Constructing A Comprehensive Phylogenetic Analysis Of Known Yersinia Pestis Phages, Jacqueline Chavez
All HCAS Student Capstones, Theses, and Dissertations
Yersinia pestis, the causative agent of the plague, has become increasingly resistant to many antibiotics; therefore, alternatives such as phage therapy are necessary. Phage therapy uses combinations of bacteriophages or phages, which are viruses that only infect bacteria. However, phages—especially Y. pestis phages —are severely understudied. Thus, this research has sought to specifically isolate a phage from soil that infects Y. pestis. There were 146 samples that were collected from across the US, focusing on those with reported cases of plague. These samples were enriched with Y. pestis to maximize the amount of potential phage that target Y. pestis. …

Prediction Method Of Short‑Term Pv Output Power Based On Pca‑Vmd‑Mvo‑Svm, Gang Zou, Bin Zhao, Qiang Luo, Gao Liang, Li Wang
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
To enhance the accuracy and reliability of short-term photovoltaic (PV) output power forecasting, a hybrid model is proposed, which integrates principal component analysis (PCA), variational mode decomposition (VMD), and multi-verse optimizer (MVO) to optimize a support vector machine (SVM) for PV output power prediction. Initially, PCA's data analysis capabilities and VMD's data decomposition performance are leveraged to reduce the dimensionality and decompose the multidimensional training data. Subsequently, the extracted dataset is fed into an SVM prediction model optimized by the MVO algorithm to obtain PV output power forecast components for different intrinsic modes. Finally, the results of these forecast components …

Benefit Allocation Strategy For Energy Storage Operators Based On Insurance Actuarial Theory, Da Xie, Rongrong Dai, Shaowei Gao, Shunfu Lin, Zhaowei Xu, Yiyun Xiong
Journal of Electric Power Science and Technology
Energy storage operators can enhance the reliability of power supply and mitigate the losses caused by power outages. To further expand the application scenarios of energy storage for improving power supply reliability and increase the profits of energy storage operators, a profit allocation strategy based on insurance actuarial theory is proposed. Firstly, the Bűhlmann premium model is constructed by fitting the distribution of power outage losses, integrating credibility theory with the pure premium model. Then, a corrected failure rate model based on a health index is established, and the minimum path method is employed to calculate the insurance indemnity probabilities …

Sir Nicholas: Chivalric Tropes And Dickens's Critique Of The Aristocracy In Nicholas Nickleby, Erin Quinn
Sir Nicholas: Chivalric Tropes And Dickens's Critique Of The Aristocracy In Nicholas Nickleby, Erin Quinn
Honors Theses
One of the most prominent themes in Charles Dickens’s 1838-39 novel Nicholas Nickleby is the theme of class. In particular, Dickens highlights the tension between the middle and upper classes through the contrast between the middle-class titular protagonist and the novel’s two aristocrats, Sir Mulberry Hawk and Lord Frederick Verisopht. In this thesis, I argue that Dickens foregrounds this contrast through his consistent deployment of tropes of chivalry and knighthood to describe Nicholas and his friends despite their middle-class status. I analyze the application of chivalric language, concepts, and characteristics to the actions and attitudes of the middle-class characters and …
Sibling Relationships Through The Lens Of Culture And Inclusion Of Other In The Self, Laura Aguilar
Sibling Relationships Through The Lens Of Culture And Inclusion Of Other In The Self, Laura Aguilar
Honors Thesis
Sibling relationships are formative for identity development and well-being. These relationships vary in closeness due to factors such as age, gender, family dynamics, parenting style and cultural context. Existing literature has shown that siblings from interdependent cultures have closer relationships than those from independent cultures. This thesis proposes that sibling relationships can be examined through the lens of the self-expansion model, focusing on the Inclusion of Other in the Self (IOS) scale. It hypothesizes that those from interdependent cultures will have more inclusion of other in the self than those from independent cultures. Participants from Japan representing the interdependent culture …

The availability of natural resources drives the exploration and transformation of remote regions in the Arctic and beyond. Extractive infrastructure is one of the major sources of industrial development and environmental impact on landscapes. For Indigenous people, these landscapes are homely environments full of sentient beings, and for other local communities, they provide a wide variety of subsistence and hunting resources. While extractive infrastructure violence is the evident issue for many Indigenous communities, there are more complicated situations where extractive infrastructure is adopted and utilized for the subsistence and support of other human and more-than-human relations in local and Indigenous …

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that more commonly affects African American people, although it is seen in people of all racial backgrounds. This condition is characterized by a dysregulated immune response resulting in widespread inflammation. Clinical manifestations caused by this inflammation include arthritis, anemia, cutaneous rashes, pleuritis, and nephritis. Treatment for SLE aims to reduce disease activity and maintain a state of low inflammation. In this regard, numerous treatments are used, such as hydroxychloroquine, glucocorticoids, and non-glucocorticoid immunosuppressants such as methotrexate. Related to these drugs resulting in significant adverse effects and being ineffective in controlling SLE symptoms …

Background: Solid tumors vary by the immunogenic potential of the tumor microenvironment (TME) and the likelihood of response to immunotherapy. The emerging literature has identified key immune cell populations that significantly impact immune activation or suppression within the TME. This study investigated candidate T-cell populations and their differential infiltration within different tumor types as estimated from mRNA co-expression levels of the corresponding cellular markers.
Methods: We analyzed the mRNA co-expression levels of cellular biomarkers that define stem-like tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs), tissue-resident memory T-cells (TRM), early dysfunctional T-cells, late dysfunctional T-cells, activated-potentially anti-tumor (APA) T-cells and Butyrophilin 3A (BTN3A) isoforms, utilizing …
