Student Perceptions Of Campus-Integrated Therapy Dogs: Best Practices And Impact On Well-Being And Campus Belonging, Laura Poleshuck, Olivia Griffin, Caroline Winiecki
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
College/university students are revealing concerning levels of anxiety and depression, as well as extremely high levels of loneliness, which interfere with their success in higher education (ACHA, 2022). A plethora of research has demonstrated that animal-assisted intervention (AAI) provided through interaction with trained therapy dogs has a positive effect on student well-being (e.g., Crossman et al., 2015; Grajfoner et al., 2017; Ward-Griffin et al., 2018). The InterProfessional Animal-assisted Wellness (IPAW) Collaborative, a campus-integrated therapy dog program with postsecondary students on a university campus, is a novel approach to AAI. The campus-integrated therapy dog program described in this study incorporates Pet …

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonists are medications that were originally approved for type 2 diabetes to help improve glycemic control in conjunction with exercise and dieting. One of the beneficial effects of this medication class is weight loss, and recently the FDA has approved a select few for this indication of weight loss. With these medications becoming increasingly more popular, it is imperative that both providers and patients understand the differences in terms of efficacy for these medications and the potential adverse events to make the best decision about initiating therapy. This article summarizes the FDA indications for all the GLP-1 …

Case DescriptionWe report a case of a 45-year-old female with a history of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease who developed Horner syndrome post-ACDF. Initially admitted for suspected cholecystitis found on imaging following a fall, the patient's clinical course was complicated by worsening cervical and lumbar pain. This prompted MRI evaluation revealing cervical stenosis at C5-C6 and ACDF was performed without intraoperative complications. However, on postoperative day three, the patient developed left eye ptosis and miosis, consistent with …

Relationship Of Amphetamines In Reducing Substance Abuse Risks Among Adhd Patients, Ashley Deng, Eduardo Espiridion Md
Transformative Medicine
Introduction: Attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affects a substantial portion of the global population, influencing cognitive and behavioral function. Current treatments often involve stimulant medications like amphetamines, which are controlled substances due to their addiction potential. Non-stimulant options, such as atomoxetine, are typically considered secondary therapies. This study examines the relationship between ADHD medication use and the subsequent development of psychoactive, stimulant, and cocaine-related substance use disorders. Methods: Using the TriNetX database, we conducted a retrospective cohort study to compare ADHD patients prescribed amphetamines to those receiving atomoxetine or no medication. Propensity score matching was employed to control for confounding variables, followed …

Studying The Dynamics Of Neuromodulators In The Brain By Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging, Pingchuan Ma
Studying The Dynamics Of Neuromodulators In The Brain By Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging, Pingchuan Ma
Arts & Sciences Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Neuromodulators in the brain are fundamental to neuronal functions and animal behaviors in health and diseases. The modulatory actions of neuromodulators highly rely on their spatiotemporal dynamics. Recent research has demonstrated the importance of both sustained and transient change in neuromodulators, likely due to tonic and phasic neuromodulator release. However, no traditional methods could simultaneously record both types of dynamics. Fluorescence lifetime of optical reporters could offer a solution because it both allows high temporal resolution and is impervious to sensor expression differences across chronic periods. Nevertheless, no fluorescence lifetime change across the entire classes of neuromodulator sensors was previously …

The Case Of The Missing Case: How Neglecting Chisom V. Roemer Leaves § 2 Of The Voting Rights Act Analytically At Sea, James F. Blumstein
William & Mary Law Review Online
This article critiques the Supreme Court's decision in Allen v. Milligan for relying solely on Thornburg v. Gingles and overlooking Chisom v. Roemer, a key precedent interpreting § 2 of the Voting Rights Act. Chisom established that vote dilution claims must be tied to unequal access to the political process, not just electoral outcomes. By ignoring this linkage, the Court risks turning § 2 into a vehicle for race-based electoral entitlements. The author argues that reaffirming Chisom is essential to preserving the statute’s process-focused intent and analytical clarity.

"Does Anyone Believe Me"?: The Traumatization Of Domestic Violence Survivors In The Criminal Justice System, Olivia Depalma
"Does Anyone Believe Me"?: The Traumatization Of Domestic Violence Survivors In The Criminal Justice System, Olivia Depalma
Master of Arts in Human Services
Survivors of domestic violence are often subject to chronic trauma as well as a heightened risk of injuries and mental health problems and disorders. The intention of the author is to focus on how trauma impacts a survivor’s ability to maneuver and interact with the criminal justice system (CJS). Prior studies have shown how survivor’s behaviors, usually the result of trauma, can lead to misconceived notions and beliefs in court officials and those involved in the CJS. Survivors will often face judgment, doubt, and criticism in the CJS, and this can impact their willingness to come forward, report the abuse, …

Introduction: Current hearing aids have an abundance of feature options and technologies. It is important to understand the clinical impact of hearing aid technology selection and how to individualize fittings to optimize hearing aid performance according to listening environment. To probe the naturalistic listening experiences researchers can use in-situ outcome measures. Survey based real-world assessments can increase knowledge of hearing aid users’ everyday scenarios, beyond the limits of lab-based scenarios. This study aimed to assess the relationship between subjective preference ratings of adult listeners and hearing aid technology level using Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA). A secondary research question explored survey …

Staff Education To Increase Confidence And Knowledge Of Workplace Violence In The Outpatient Mental Health Setting, Agnelyne Afugmeyig Ndifor
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Mental health care providers are often faced with difficult situations and frequently encounter patients that may exhibit violent or aggressive behavior. Without adequate training and knowledge to manage these situations, there is a risk of harm and a threat to safety for nurses and office staff. Many hospitals and inpatient psychiatric providers provide training and educational modules to educate staff on how to prepare for and manage these situations, but there is not much research about staff confidence in preventing and managing violent or aggressive patients in the outpatient setting. The practice gap that I analyzed in this project was …

Act For Ocd: An Example Of Act And Values-Based Exposures, Leila K. Capel, Michael P. Twohig
Psychology Faculty Publications
Exposure exercises as seen in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP) are standard in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In the last two decades, additional research has been conducted on acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and the ways that exposure exercises are conducted from an ACT model. Empirical support for conducting exposures from an ACT model exists. Group level statistics suggest that ACT with ACT-based exposures is as effective as traditional ERP or CBT. A key component of ACT and values-based exposures is the focus on teaching psychological flexibility to allow for engagement with values-based …
Earnest And Authentic Translation From Victorian England To The Wilde West, Carly E. Mcclure
Earnest And Authentic Translation From Victorian England To The Wilde West, Carly E. Mcclure
Masters Theses
Oscar Wilde’s critical, theatrical, and fiction works (notably The Importance of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray), critique Victorian societal norms through themes of authenticity, duplicity, and identity. In a period marked by strict domesticity and concealed social contradictions, Wilde’s satire dismantles rigid ideologies, exploring self-discovery and societal expectations. Through a retroactive and contemporary definition of authenticity, Wilde’s works exhibit an advocacy for art as a central pursuit rather than purely a reflection of societal norms, which is a defining value of his Authenticism. Wilde’s emphasis on Aestheticism is a key component of his authentic representation of self, …
