Investigators in neuroscience have turned to Big Data to address replication and reliability issues by increasing sample size. These efforts unveil new questions about how to integrate data across distinct sources and instruments. The goal of this study was to link scores across common auditory verbal learning tasks (AVLTs). This international secondary analysis aggregated multisite raw data for AVLTs across 53 studies totaling 10,505 individuals. Using the ComBat-GAM algorithm, we isolated and removed the component of memory scores associated with site effects while preserving instrumental effects. After adjustment, a continuous item response theory model used multiple memory items of varying …

The pandemic has reinforced older adults' reliance on their homes and the concept of “aging in place”. Changes like reduced physical strength and cognitive deficit, however, have heightened the challenge of simple tasks like obstacle crossing among older adults, let alone when older adults cannot perceive the surroundings well during the nighttime. The study is, therefore, to evaluate the impact of lighting on older adults' obstacle-crossing behavior during the nighttime. Twenty-seven older adults (81 ± 6 yrs., 171 ± 12 cm, 75 ± 20 kg, 14 females) were recruited. Participants were asked to cross over the obstacle in a dark …

Inquiries into properties of brain structure and function have progressed due to developments in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To sustain progress in investigating and quantifying neuroanatomical details in vivo, the reliability and validity of brain measurements are paramount. Quality control (QC) is a set of procedures for mitigating errors and ensuring the validity and reliability of brain measurements. Despite its importance, there is little guidance on best QC practices and reporting procedures. The study of hippocampal subfields in vivo is a critical case for QC because of their small size, inter-dependent boundary definitions, and common artifacts in the MRI data …

Intergenerational Transmission Of Wisdom Through Family Narratives: A Qualitative Analysis Of Emerging Adults' Perspective, Emilia Mazurek
Intergenerational Transmission Of Wisdom Through Family Narratives: A Qualitative Analysis Of Emerging Adults' Perspective, Emilia Mazurek
The Qualitative Report
Family narratives are a medium for the intergenerational transmission of life wisdom, which may influence recipient’s beliefs system and behaviors. Despite a growing body of knowledge on wisdom, emerging adults remain insufficiently researched as to what wisdom from their perspective was conveyed to them through stories. The aim was to identify what wisdom emerging adults perceive in the narratives told them by their parents about themselves. The study was conducted in Poland. Convenience sampling was used. 42 emerging adults (33 female, 8 male, 1 non-binary) ranging from 19 to 22 years participated in the study. Participants were asked to write …

International Journal of Exercise Science 17(2): 1444-1460, 2024. The purpose of this study was to compare changes in circulating microRNAs -126 (c-miR-126) and -222 (c-miR-222) following acute serial concurrent exercise (SCE) and integrated concurrent exercise (ICE) sessions among young, sedentary adults. Ten males and 9 females completed the study procedures. For SCE, participants performed resistance exercise (RE) followed by aerobic exercise (AE), without mixing the two. For ICE, participants performed a brief bout of AE before each set of RE. Blood was collected before, immediately after (IP), and 1 h (1HR) after each exercise session. Expression of c-miR-126 significantly increased …

An Integrated Review: Faith Community Nurse Transitional Care Model Health Ministry, Youn Kyeong Cummings
DNP Qualifying Manuscripts
The hospital readmission rate is highest among underserved communities, and providing a continuum of care to these populations can yield a greater reduction in the readmission rate. Church and faith-based clinics often help underserved communities, and equipping them with the transitional care model (TCM) and an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) with specialized training as a Faith Community Nurse (FCN) can implement whole-person care, improve the health of the community, and reduce hospital readmission.
California has a 14.5% readmission rate. There is uncertainty surrounding the presence of transitional care departments in California's community hospitals, with some of these facilities offering …

Prolonged sitting is associated with higher health issues across all age groups, particularly affecting students’ classroom behaviors and academic achievement. In this paper, we review the psychological research on the relationship between posture and cognition, focusing on how students learn while sitting versus standing. Our findings show that there is no clear evidence favoring one posture over another in terms of cognitive outcomes. Meanwhile, studies highlight the health and physiological benefits of standing desks. Dynamic postural configurations can encourage movement and support collaboration among students and between students and teachers. Introducing standing desks to the K-12 classrooms could reduce health …

The Care Quality Commission is responsible for regulating care homes across England to make sure that residents are respected and provided for. But what happens when they find a home who are not doing this? Little is known about commonalities in the main failings that preclude a care home’s closure after CQC intervention and little is known concerning the effects of closing down a home on healthcare professionals. To understand the common themes precluding care home closure and whether debriefing can aid healthcare professionals in dealing with the emotional challenges of care home closure. This study used thematic analysis to …

Social determinants of health (SDOH) are those conditions in the environment where people are born, live, learn, work, play, worship, and age that affect a wide range of health, physical and cognitive functions, and quality-of-life outcomes and risks. Numerous social factors are significant contributors to the development and progression of various diseases. Recently, much attention has focused on assessing the impact of social factors on Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD). The objective of this commentary is to describe and assess the SDOH that have been associated with increased risk of ADRD in the context of the social environment in …

Employment
The growing demand for home-based care services contends with a major shortage of personal care aide (PCA) workers. PCAs support older adults and people with disabilities in home and community-based settings with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, eating, and more. A thriving PCA workforce is necessary to match demand for home and community-based care. However, persistently low wages and poor job quality lead to high rates of turnover and shortages in the workforce. This research report aims to understand the relationship between PCA workforce capacity and quality of consumer-reported care for long-term services and supports.

Many coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) positive individuals exhibit abnormal electroencephalographic (EEG) activity reflecting “brain fog” and mild cognitive impairments even months after the acute phase of infection. Resting-state EEG abnormalities include EEG slowing (reduced alpha rhythm; increased slow waves) and epileptiform activity. An expert panel conducted a systematic review to present compelling evidence that cognitive deficits due to COVID-19 and to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementia (ADRD) are driven by overlapping pathologies and neurophysiological abnormalities. EEG abnormalities seen in COVID-19 patients resemble those observed in early stages of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly ADRD. It is proposed that similar EEG abnormalities in …

In recent years, there has been a widespread integration of virtual reality (VR) technology across various sectors including healthcare, education, and entertainment, marking a significant rise in its societal importance. However, with the ongoing trend of population ageing, understanding the elderly’s acceptance of such new technologies has become a focal point in both academic and industrial discourse. Despite the attention it garners, there exists a gap in understanding the attitudes of older adults towards VR adoption, along with evident needs and barriers within this demographic. Hence, gaining an in-depth comprehension of the factors influencing the acceptance of VR technology among …

Background:
The COVID-19 pandemic triggered policy changes in 2020 that allowed insurance companies to reimburse telehealth services, leading to increased telehealth use, especially in rural and underserved areas. However, with many emergency rules ending in 2022, patients and health care providers face potential challenges in accessing these services.
Objective:
This study analyzed telehealth use across specialties in Arkansas before and after the pandemic (2017-2022) using data from electronic medical records from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences Medical Center. We explored trends in insurance coverage for telehealth visits and developed metrics to compare the performance of telehealth versus in-person …
