End Of Life In African American Older Adults: An Integrative Literature Review, Karen O. Moss, Karen M. Rose Oct 2024

End Of Life In African American Older Adults: An Integrative Literature Review, Karen O. Moss, Karen M. Rose

Leadership Connection

Session presented on Friday, September 26, 2014:

End-of-life care in the United States is described as deficient and fragmented. Minority populations engage in end-of-life planning less frequently than Caucasians. African Americans represent the second largest minority group in the United States with its older adult population projected to increase by 114% by 2030. The Patient-Self Determination Act of 1990 requires Medicare and Medicaid funded healthcare organizations to empower patients to refuse or accept medical care and execute advance directives. The Study to Understand Prognoses and Preferences for Outcomes and Risks of Treatments (SUPPORT) confirmed substantial shortcomings of healthcare for seriously …

Efficacy Of A Home-Based Neurocognitive Remediation Program In Adults With Hiv, Shameka C. Humphrey

Leadership Connection

Session presented on Thursday, September 25, 2014:

Despite the life-sustaining effects of Combination Antiretroviral Therapy (cART), adults with HIV continue to experience neurocognitive impairments. In fact, over half of adults with HIV experience HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorders (HAND). As neurocognitive impairments continue to emerge among adults with HIV, more private settings such as the home may facilitate greater use of neurocognitive remediation therapies such as speed of processing training to enhance neurocognitive and everyday functioning. The efficacy of a home-based speed of processing training was examined in middle-aged and older adults with HIV (i.e., age 40+).

Advance Directive Protocol In The Primary Care Setting, Alexei Boettcher Oct 2024

Advance Directive Protocol In The Primary Care Setting, Alexei Boettcher

Group: Nebraska Methodist College

Background and Review of Literature: Advance directives (AD) are documents that offer patients a way to avoid unwanted care in the event of a serious illness or incapacity. Studies demonstrate the care patients receive at the end-of-life is not often consistent with their preferences, as a result of suboptimal communication between the patient and provider as well as documentation of health care proxies and treatment preferences (Isaac & Curtis, 2016). The lack of a current formal protocol used by primary care providers regarding ADs, particularly towards the young adult patient population, resulting in insufficient discussions of patients’ wishes regarding end-of-life …

A Need For Nurses, Danielle Krohn, Hilary Applequist

Group: Nebraska Methodist College

Nurse residency programs were designed with the intent of assisting nurses with the transition into a new area of practice. These programs are common in acute care settings; however, implementation has been slow to move into long-term care. The purpose of this project was to complete a community needs assessment to determine whether the community nursing home would be interested in implementing a nurse residency program within the next year. The assessment was completed with surveys distributed to various nursing home stakeholders. Survey results concluded that the current nurse orientation process, nurse recruitment, and nurse turnover rates were important items …

Bridging The Protection Gap: Innovative Approaches To Shield Older Adults From Ai-Enhanced Scams, Ld Herrera, London Van Sickle, Ashley L. Podhradsky

Research & Publications

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly gaining popularity as individuals, groups, and organizations discover and apply its expanding capabilities. Generative AI creates or alters various content types including text, image, audio, and video that are realistic and challenging to identify as AI-generated constructs. However, guardrails preventing malicious use of AI are easily bypassed. Numerous indications suggest that scammers are already using AI to enhance already successful scams, improving scam effectiveness, speed and credibility, while reducing detectability of scams that target older adults, who are known to be slow to adopt new technologies. Through hypothetical cases analysis of two leading scams, the …

The same problems exist for the population in Maryland and the United States. Understanding the challenges experienced by rural communities in Maryland is critical to addressing the vulnerable population. This study is an explanatory case study that examines the social determinants of health and how those affect small rural communities on the Eastern Shore of Maryland by examining literature published between 2016 and 2024. The literature reviewed resulted …

Waking Up Before We Die: Aging And Spirituality, Marcelline Hutton Oct 2024

Waking Up Before We Die: Aging And Spirituality, Marcelline Hutton

Zea E-Books Collection

In retirement, I have more time for prayer and reflection, to rest in the Lord, and hence to have my spirit renewed. We choose how we interpret our situations. Positive, spiritual aging ideas enhance our sense of well-being. Of course, the loss of loved ones decreases our sense of self-worth at times, but the Spirit can renew us. As Genesis reminds us, God was still working in the lives of Sarah and Abraham in old age, and they can serve as models for us. Indeed, Sarah laughed at the angels and shows us how humor exists even as we age. …

ESI Publications

Subjective well-being (SWB) is often described as being U-shaped over adulthood, declining to a midlife slump and then improving thereafter. Improved SWB in later adulthood has been considered a paradox given age-related declines in health and social losses. While SWB has mostly been studied in high-income countries, it remains largely unexplored in rural subsistence populations lacking formal institutions that reliably promote social welfare. Here, we evaluate the age profile of SWB among three small-scale subsistence societies (n = 468; study 1), forest users from 23 low-income countries (n = 6987; study 2), and Tsimane’ horticulturalists (n = …

Factors Associated With Dementia-Related Stigma In British Adolescents, Esra Hassan, Ben Hicks, Naji Tabet, Nicolas Farina Oct 2024

Factors Associated With Dementia-Related Stigma In British Adolescents, Esra Hassan, Ben Hicks, Naji Tabet, Nicolas Farina

Peninsula Medical School

Background: Dementia-related stigma is a prominent barrier for people living with dementia, leading to poor well-being and social isolation. Adolescents are an under-researched group in society that may already have experience of dementia and are more susceptible to attitudinal change which makes them ideal targets for anti-stigma initiatives outlined by public health policy. For the development of evidence-based anti-stigma initiatives in adolescents, it is important to understand which socio-demographic groups are most likely to develop stigmatising attitudes and why. This study aims to identify factors of dementia-related stigma in adolescents. Methods: A total of 1,044 adolescents (aged 11–18 years) from …
