Perceptions Of A State-Level Hpv Vaccine Mandate And Exemption Option In Rural Virginia: A Qualitative Study, E. Marshall Brooks, Kendall Fugate-Laus, Ben Webel, Shillpa Naavaal

Dental Public Health and Policy Publications

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States; yet, despite the availability of safe and effective HPV vaccines, only half of eligible adolescents have completed the vaccine series. School-entry requirements are one proven strategy to increase vaccination rates among children and youth and reduce the burden of HPV-related cancer. This study investigated community perceptions of an HPV vaccine school-entry mandate in Virginia and the consequences of a low threshold exemption option included in the legislation. We conducted 40 interviews with community members including 15 interviews with parents, 19 with healthcare providers, and 6 with …

The Power Of Community In Inspiring And Pushing Youth Into Higher Education As A Means Of Improvement, Laurine Faro Jan 2024

The Power Of Community In Inspiring And Pushing Youth Into Higher Education As A Means Of Improvement, Laurine Faro

Community Engagement Student Work

This research highlighted family and community members’ role in supporting student success in Higher Education. I analyzed four cases/organizations/communities that had been effective in their efforts to support student success. I conducted a meta-analysis of organizations that had programs in place to drive student success. Lack of support from parents, teachers, schools and neighborhoods all seemed to contribute to a lack of belief in student success both at the personal level and the community level. In the neighborhoods studied, inadequate academic preparation and stability, and the lack of a support system often persisted into young adulthood, making the opportunities for …

Navigating Gentrification: Exploring The Relationship Around Immigrant Integration, Sense Of Belonging, Social Capital, And Success, Patricia Stocker

Community Engagement Student Work

Gentrification and its impact on immigrant communities are complex and evolving phenomena deeply intertwined with the racial and immigrant histories specific to each city. Hwang (2015) argues that gentrification perpetuates racial and ethnic inequality across urban landscapes, highlighting the need for comprehensive approaches to address its effects on immigrant populations. This study examines the intersection of gentrification, immigrant entrepreneurship, and community development, emphasizing the significance of fostering a sense of belonging and social capital within immigrant communities. Building on existing research, this capstone proposes a community project aimed at welcoming immigrants, integrating them into local communities, and facilitating their success …

"Living Its Strange Life" A Literary Biography Of Margery Latimer From The Archives In 18 Scenes, Leo Egger

Kaplan Senior Essay Prize for Use of Library Special Collections

Portage, Wisconsin is a place defined by passing through it. It was once a major hub of passage, via river and canal, from the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River. Today, the town, home to just over 10,000 people, is little more than a distant suburb of the state capital, Madison, 35 miles to the south. On the drive up 91-North, billboards advertise Ho-Chunk casinos, water parks in the Wisconsin Dells, and the world’s largest Culver’s, a fast-food chain famous for its frozen custard. There are numerous roadside attractions: outside a gas station, a life-sized statue of a pink elephant …

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam: Impacts At Play For Egypt, Chemp Carpenter Jan 2024

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam: Impacts At Play For Egypt, Chemp Carpenter

Undergraduate Review

As fresh water is required for human survival, access to water resources greatly benefits human societies. Over the last 50 years, there has been an increase in dam construction around the world. Dams are built to store water and regulate a river's flow, as well as to raise the water level upstream to facilitate flow into a channel. Furthermore, they offer numerous benefits, including controlling floods, improving irrigation, acting as storage, being a water supplier, and generating electricity. Nonetheless, dams also pose serious hazards. Ethiopia began construction on a 6000-megawatt dam called The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) in 2011, …

What Explains American Perceptions Of Russia And China?, Shane Stryker Jan 2024

What Explains American Perceptions Of Russia And China?, Shane Stryker

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

This undergraduate senior thesis project aims to investigate the question of how Americans perceive the challenges posed by Russia and China comparatively, and which factors have the greatest influence on these perceptions. This is important for many reasons, such as a greater understanding of American public opinion on foreign affairs that may help frame approaches to U.S. foreign policy. Additionally, finding where the American public agrees and disagrees on competitors and challengers provides us with insight that can be used to explain perceptions.

First, there will be a literature review concerning the importance of understanding public opinion, explanations and theories …

Correlation Of Geochemical Zones In Great Onyx Cave, Mammoth Cave National Park, To Surficial Geological Units, William Strehl Jan 2024

Correlation Of Geochemical Zones In Great Onyx Cave, Mammoth Cave National Park, To Surficial Geological Units, William Strehl

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Cave passages in Great Onyx Cave, developed within the Girkin and Ste. Genevieve Limestones of Mammoth Cave National Park, contain a variety of secondary features on cave walls, including speleothems such as stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstone, evaporite minerals, and dissolution features such as pits and domes. What secondary features are present on the walls of a cave passage depends on the flow and geochemistry of capillary water that has interacted with the cave passage. In the Mammoth Cave aquifer, five distinct geochemical zones have been broadly defined and each typically contains a particular set of secondary features. Geochemical zonation in …

Machine Intelligence With Associative Memory And Event-Driven Transaction History, Rao Mikkilineni, W. Patrick Kelly

Barowsky School of Business | Faculty Scholarship

Digital machine intelligence has evolved from its inception in the form of computation of numbers to AI, which is centered around performing cognitive tasks that humans can perform, such as predictive reasoning or complex calculations. The state of the art includes tasks that are easily described by a list of formal, mathematical rules or a sequence of event-driven actions such as modeling, simulation, business workflows, interaction with devices, etc., and also tasks that are easy to do “intuitively”, but are hard to describe formally or as a sequence of event-driven actions such as recognizing spoken words or faces. While these …

Dreams, Synchrony, And Synchronicity, Terry Marks-Tarlow Jan 2024

Dreams, Synchrony, And Synchronicity, Terry Marks-Tarlow

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This essay presents the dreams of a long-term patient over the course of treatment in order to explore the transpersonal potential of the relational unconscious—those open channels of unconscious communication between people. At a key moment, the patient brings in the therapist’s own childhood dream, serving to break a period of impasse and reset the therapy. Dreams and their interpretation reveal the essence of fractal consciousness, by which a sliver of experience can shed light on the whole of the psyche. A fractal model of understanding suggests open boundaries between self/other and self/world at multiple levels. The deep intimacy of …

Effect Of Tatraka On Anxiety And The Concentration Of Adolescents In Sanskrit And Arabic Schools, Rajnish Chandra Tripathi

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Yoga is considered as an important and efficacious tool to overcome physical and psychological problems as a result of facing chronic stress and anxiety as well as to improve psychological strengths. Yogic visual concentration (Trataka) is a fundamental concentration method in yogic practices for enhancing concentration ability as well as healing psychological problems. The literal meaning of the Sanskrit word Trataka is “to gaze steadily”, suggesting gazing at a small point until tears are shed. Thus, the present study examined the effects of Trataka yogic practices on the anxiety and the concentration ability of adolescents in Sanskrit and Arabic schools …

Environmental Biology Masters Capstone, Antonio Gonzalez-Pita Jan 2024

Environmental Biology Masters Capstone, Antonio Gonzalez-Pita

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Human wildlife interactions (HWI) pose a complex challenge for wildlife managers. Human encroachment into wildlife habitat and the growing number of outdoor recreationists are increasing the frequency of contact and conflict, especially in regions such as the Front Range of Colorado. Geographic information systems (GIS), which use a combination of remote sensing and environmental survey data, allow for predictive spatial analyses of where human wildlife interactions are likely to occur. I used publicly reported observations of moose to create spatial predictive maps in a species distribution model framework. Slope and elevation were shown to be the strongest predictors of HWI, …

CONFERENCE THEME: FANTASIES OF THE MIDDLE LANDS

The idea of “middle-ness” can suggest stability—the center of an object is less likely to break than its edges. It can also suggest the opposite: something in a state of change can be said to be “in the middle”—neither one thing nor another. Mythcon 53, located in the middle of the continental U.S., welcomes an exciting range of papers, panels, and discussions exploring the concept of “middle-ness” as it is worked out in fantasy, science fiction, …

Meta-Learning-Based Model Stacking Framework For Hardware Trojan Detection In Fpga Systems, Mani Rupak Gurram

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

In today's technological landscape, hardware devices are integral to critical applications such as industrial automation, autonomous vehicles, and medical equipment, relying on advanced platforms like FPGAs for core functionalities. However, the multi-stage manufacturing process, often distributed across various foundries, introduces substantial security risks, notably the potential for hardware Trojan insertion. These malicious modifications compromise the reliability and safety of hardware systems. This research addresses the detection of hardware Trojans through side-channel analysis, utilizing power and electromagnetic signal data, combined with meta-learning techniques, specifically model stacking. By employing diverse base models and a meta-model to consolidate predictions, this non-invasive approach effectively …

Dog burials are known from Egypt from the Predynastic period from c. 3500 BC onward and continue into the Roman era. Different burials have been interpreted in a variety of ways: companion/pet/working animals, associated with divinities, and as guardians. This paper presents a unique interment of a single human and a group of dogs found in the cemetery of Deir el-Banat in the Fayum (Egypt), which can be interpreted as either a religio-magical protective deposit for the cemetery, or a religio-medical one, involving the sacrifice of several animals.

An Analysis And Evaluation Of The Impact Social Capital And The Built Environment Have On County-Level Political Engagement, Dylan Hogan

Theses & ETDs

The foundations of a well-functioning democratic society depend on an active and diverse political culture. Social capital is one way of evaluating the extent to which a diverse range of people participate politically. While there is a wealth interdisciplinary of literature utilizing the concept of social capital, the built environment (being all human infrastructure and ecological influence on earth) has not been deeply explored concerning social capital or political participation. This thesis follows three Florida counties which have been selected for being rural, suburban, and urban generally. Geospatial zoning data is collected along with each zoning district's unique ordinance codes …

Escaping The Peripherality: Local Experiences Of The Us Military Presence In Northeast Thailand, Wipawee Srifa Jan 2024

Escaping The Peripherality: Local Experiences Of The Us Military Presence In Northeast Thailand, Wipawee Srifa

CGU Theses & Dissertations

From 1964 to 1976, the United States military deployed troops to Thailand as part of its strategic operations during the Vietnam War. Most of these military personnel were stationed in Isan, a northeastern region of Thailand, due to its proximity to key bombing targets in Indochina. Historically, Isan was affiliated with Laos and was assimilated into Thai governance in the late eighteenth century. Until the 1950s, most of Isan’s population resided in rural, agricultural communities and were politically, economically, and culturally marginalized by mainstream Thai society. The Thai state’s internal colonization exacerbated socioeconomic disparities for Isan peasants, severely restricting avenues …

Streets For The People: Rethinking Urban Mobility, Mariya A. Vahanvaty

ENGS 15.11: Design and Education

This lesson embarks on an exploration of how America’s deep-rooted car culture emerged and its lasting impact on modern life. Students will understand the decline of early public transportation systems and how World War II catalyzed rapid technological advancements, leading to a shift in infrastructure and business priorities. They'll analyze how post-war economic prosperity fueled mass motorization, with cars becoming a status symbol for Americans. Three key drivers—post-WWII technological advancements, urban sprawl, and the rise of car culture—serve as a framework for understanding the U.S.'s car reliance. Through evidence-based analysis, students will then apply these concepts to case studies, deducing …

Continuities And Transformations: The Tiwanaku Component Of The Site Of In Copacabana, Bolivia, Stanislava R. Chavez

Wayne State University Dissertations

The site of Cundisa in Copacabana (Copacabana Peninsula, Bolivia) was occupied almost continuously for the past 2,500 years. The oldest occupation includes a Yaya-Mama religious tradition semi-subterranean temple with some associated burials. Later, the whole site, including the interior of the Yaya-Mama temple, was used as a Tiwanaku cemetery. Subsequently, the Incas reused the site, as they incorporated Copacabana into their empire as a major pilgrimage site. After the Spanish conquest the site continued to be occupied, including an oven where glazed tiles for the Copacabana Basilica were fired. This dissertation focuses on the Tiwanaku component of this complex site. …

Remixing Community Cartographies: Mapping Community Engagement, New Media, And The Composition Classroom, Christopher W. Susak

Wayne State University Dissertations

Community Writing has emerged as a relatively new subdiscipline that spans elements of larger fields such as Rhetoric and Writing Studies, Technical and Professional Communication, and Composition Pedagogy. Despite this recent emergence, teacher-scholars are still grappling with three major problematics traditionally associated with Community Engaged Learning (CEL) writ large: (1) this work frequently fails to address the real needs and basic material realities of community partners in favor of (2) a repetitive cycle of short-lived educational “experiences” for students, often without tangible and/or sustainable results, which is further exacerbated by (3) a shortage of useful data-driven assessment conducted on curriculum, …
