The Effects Of Trauma On Students And Teachers, Keightlin A. Mcgill
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Teachers must recognize trauma symptoms in students, which can stem from various causes, including maltreatment. Trauma leads to stress, fear, and powerlessness, affecting children’s coping mechanisms and academic performance. Teachers play a crucial role in identifying and reporting trauma and building trust with students. Responses to trauma are diverse, manifesting in physical, behavioral, emotional, and cognitive symptoms. Early identification and referral to mental health services are vital in mitigating trauma effects. Burnout among teachers is linked to chronic stress and secondary trauma, impacting their well-being and job performance. Macalester College Commemorative Landscape Critical Audit, Jordan Brasher, Annabelle Adachi, Zari Baker, Beya Hull, Mona Marshall, Ryan Przespolewski
Geography Department Class Projects
This critical audit examines the commemorative landscape at Macalester College, focusing on how its commemorative landscape features – with a special focus on campus building names – (do not) reflect the institution’s stated values and commitments to diversity, equity, inclusion, and global citizenship. Rather than a traditional audit which is focused on examining financial records and transactions to ensure accuracy, compliance, and accountability for financial management purposes, this critical audit evaluates Macalester’s compliance with its institutional mission and vision through its commemorative landscape. Starting from the position that commemorative place naming always involves selective decisions about whose legacy and contributions …

National Cultures In Times Of Digital Transformation Of The Travel Industry: Qualitative Exploration Of Effects On Digital Business Models, Mariia Perelygina, Deniz Kucukusta, Rob Law
Conference papers
Globalization and digitalization raise questions about the contemporary role of national culture. Investigating digital business models (BMs) in the travel industry, this study clarifies the effects of national cultures on them. Thirty-nine impactful aspects of national cultures— 25 institutional and 14 ideational—are identified based on qualitative research. These aspects are derived from various cross-cultural frameworks and include three newly suggested cultural dimensions. The proposed model clarifies the mechanism of the impact. The study restates the significance of national cultures in the digital era and places emphasis on the importance of both institutional and ideational sides of national cultures. The study …

Implementing The Least Restrictive Environment Through Co-Teaching: The Role Of Administrative Support, Maureen Hatfield
Implementing The Least Restrictive Environment Through Co-Teaching: The Role Of Administrative Support, Maureen Hatfield
Dissertations of Practice
This dissertation investigates the perspectives of educators with the aim of enhancing support for the practice of co-teaching. Co-teaching, an inclusive instructional strategy involving collaboration between general and special educators, holds promise for diverse student populations. However, its effective implementation requires adequate support structures. This research employs a qualitative approach, employing interviews grounded in narrative inquiry and supplemented by a corresponding survey. The key findings illuminate critical areas where principals can enhance support for co-teaching practices within their schools. Through analysis, three primary categories emerged: resources, autonomy, and efficacy. General and special educators identified these areas as pivotal for successful …
The Potential Relationships Between Utilizing Quarterly Assessments For Assessing Adolescents’ English Skills As A Predictive Indicator Of Students English Lanugage Arts Regents Scores, Tyler John Aracena
Theses and Dissertations
This quantitative research study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of quarterly assessments administered quarterly to students in a large school district in the northeastern United States and their impact on students’ subject-specific corresponding Regents Examination Scores. The study aims to determine if a correlational relationship exists between the independent variable, students’ scores on quarterly assessments, and the effect on the dependent variable, students’ scores on the English Language Arts Regents examination. The conceptual framework supports this research, whereas a model represents the theory that the independent variable impacts the dependent variable. This research is grounded in a critique of the …

American Public Diplomacy And Propaganda Efforts To Change “Hearts And Minds” In A Soviet Satellite State (Bulgaria) During The Cold War, 1945-1991, Kristian Kafozov
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation investigates and demonstrates the nature and impact of public diplomacy and propaganda efforts employed by the United States of America across Eastern Europe throughout the Cold War, focusing on the People’s Republic of Bulgaria as a case study. Bulgaria's unique position as a steadfast ally of the Soviet Union underpinned by a deep-rooted Russian-Bulgarian “special relationship” (based on shared cultural, religious, and political ties forged over the course of a century), makes it an especially compelling subject for understanding the effectiveness of American initiatives in penetrating even the most loyal Soviet satellite states during the Cold War. This …

English Language Learners: A Quantitative Study Of Digital Home Access And Its Relationship To Reading Achievement In Grades Four And Eight, Schalea S. Sanders
Theses and Dissertations
Today’s world is highly digitized and requires digital access and literacy for educational, professional, and personal success. Students from traditionally disadvantaged backgrounds, such as English Language Learners and those from households experiencing low-income, often face additional challenges accessing digital devices and high-speed Internet at home. Researchers have yet to fully examine how digital access relates to reading achievement among students in the U.S. K-12 public school system. The current study used correlational secondary data analysis to examine relationships among home access to digital devices and high-speed Internet and student reading achievement outcomes. In addition, the association between digital home access …

The Adult Rights-Bearing Archetype And How It Stifles Young People’S Equal Protection, Catherine E. Smith
The Adult Rights-Bearing Archetype And How It Stifles Young People’S Equal Protection, Catherine E. Smith
Scholarly Articles
American constitutional law is defined by a rights-bearing archetype that prioritizes adults—and the Equal Protection Clause is no exception. The Supreme Court has recognized children as constitutional persons and proclaimed that “neither the Fourteenth Amendment nor the Bill of Rights is for adults alone,” but courts mostly see autonomous, rational, individualistic, income-generating grown people as rights-bearers. For the first time, this article reveals six adult-rights-bearing analytical traps that limit children’s equal protection, and proposes jettisoning the rigid Carolene Products test in favor of a nascent youth-based framework. Instead of shoehorning children’s rights into a web of laws and principles designed …

The Trouble With Technology, John O'Connor
The Trouble With Technology, John O'Connor
Conference Papers
In contemporary education, technology is either hailed as the panacea for affordable mass education or dreaded as a threat to our humanity. At the European Culture and Technology Laboratory, technology is understood in the context of the Ancient Greek origin of the word: technē—meaning a system or a method of making or doing, an art or a craft; a technique or a practice, even a way of thinking. The tools humans use are not merely a means of intervention in our environment but also a way of becoming human and thus, technology has a fundamental impact on our identity and …

This present study utilized a phenomenological design to investigate administrators’ perceptions of barriers to student attendance, current approaches to mitigating or removing those barriers, and the extent to which those approaches were effective. This study utilized interviews with area administrators where they were able to provide detailed responses to questions aligned with the research questions. Results found that, in this region of Ohio, administrators believed the biggest barrier to student attendance was parental support and transportation. Through the implementation of multiple innovative and out-of-the-box strategies, administrators felt strongly about the future success of the implementation of state required attendance supports …

Habitat loss due to deforestation is a primary threat to global biodiversity. Clearing tropical rainforests for agriculture leads to forest fragmentation. Forest fragments contain fewer large trees and provide lower food availability for primates compared to continuous forests. Mantled howler monkeys inhabit the increasingly fragmented rainforests of Central and South America and may need to alter their activity and spatial cohesion to mitigate competition and preserve energy in fragments where there is lower quality food. We compared howler monkey activity and spatial cohesion across a small forest fragment (La Suerte Biological Research Station, LSBRS) and a large, continuous forest (La …
Adaptation Of Second-Generation Turkish Americans In The U.S.A.: Extending Differential Adaptation Theory To The Offspring Of Immigrants, Ahmet Aksoy
Communication Studies Faculty Works
Contributing to the attempts to explore communication and adaptation, this study centers on the lived experiences of secondgeneration Turkish Americans as they navigate a space that is shared among the culture of their origins and the U.S. culture into which they are born. By extending differential adaptation theory (DAT) to the offspring of Turkish immigrants, this qualitative study illustrates how the U.S. shapes the agency these offspring immigrants have in communicating their cultural identity. Twenty-two second-generation Turkish Americans were interviewed about communication challenges from a DAT lens. Findings suggest that U.S.-born children of Turkish immigrants take on differential means of …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Every organization in every geography and discipline is challenged to develop leaders who can be effective in complex situations. The ethical conduct of appointed leaders is of particular concern. While some individuals possess natural leadership qualities, anyone can build leadership capacity if they put in the work and have the opportunity. Adolescents and even young children can develop foundational leadership skills; in fact, research suggests that it is vital they do so as these skills correlate with later success in both professional and personal pursuits. Youth sports programs are a promising platform for developing leadership capacity due to strong participation …

Evaluating Quoddy Region Archaeological Site Vulnerability To Sea Level Rise And Erosion Through The Integration Of Gis Modeling And Surveys (Data Files), Katelyn Dewater, Arthur Anderson, Gabriel Hrynick, William Kochtitzky
Geographic Information Systems Data Projects
Modeling coastal archaeological site erosion often depends on regional site databases that record sites accurately but with variable precision or do not define site extent. This case study examines the impact of sea level rise and erosion on 10 coastal archaeological sites in the Quoddy Region of Maine through the comparison of sea level rise models and field observations. Three sea level scenarios were modeled to predict the vulnerability of sites: current sea level, a 0.457 m increase (Low 2050 scenario), and a 0.914 m increase (High 2050 scenario), reflecting levels recommended by the Maine Climate Council for preparation efforts. …
