Therapeutic Interventions For Adolescents With Non-Epileptic Seizures, Noah Trantel

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Although there have been some studies that explore the lived experiences of adults with non-epileptic seizures, there have been limited studies that examine the lived experiences of adolescents and emerging adults with non-epileptic seizures. This qualitative study explored the experiences of emerging adults who had been diagnosed with non-epileptic seizures during adolescence. The study focused on specific interventions utilized in therapy that they found helpful, highlighted what their experiences were throughout their daily lives, and what treatment recommendations were provided. The research will also help guide parents, clinicians, and individuals with NES towards treatment recommendations. Eight participants completed an in-depth, …

Homeplace: An Afterschool Club For Adolescent Black Girls At A Predominantly White Middle School, Jana L. Johnson-Davis Jan 2024

Homeplace: An Afterschool Club For Adolescent Black Girls At A Predominantly White Middle School, Jana L. Johnson-Davis

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Adolescent Black girls often experience marginalization in schools due to zero-tolerance policies, oppressive classroom curricula, and teachers who lack cultural competency. The literature on adolescent Black girls in school revealed that there are spaces within schools that can serve as homeplaces for Black girls. This study explored how adolescent Black girls experienced homeplace in an afterschool club at a predominantly White middle school in Decatur, Georgia. This research also expands bell hooks’s (2001) theory of homeplace from the home environment to school buildings. Narrative inquiry was the methodology used for the study, and interview data was analyzed through thematic analysis. …

Lioness Of Lisabi: A Creative Dissertation Characterizing Funimilayo Ransome-Kuti As A Foremost Yoruba Feminist Leader, Oyewole Sobo Jan 2024

Lioness Of Lisabi: A Creative Dissertation Characterizing Funimilayo Ransome-Kuti As A Foremost Yoruba Feminist Leader, Oyewole Sobo

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This creative dissertation highlights the feminist leadership qualities of a social revolutionist, Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, a native of Abeokuta, Nigeria. Her struggle for equity and justice profoundly encouraged the empowerment of Indigenous women during her time. The undeniable truth is that black women have played a pivotal role in the fight for equal rights and justice, particularly in the United States. While the social struggles of American black female revolutionaries such as Rosa Parks, Coretta Scott King, Dorothy Height, Ella Baker, and Dorothy Cotton are documented and celebrated, little or nothing is known about their African counterparts. This creative dissertation …

Examining Social Identity Among Urban School Leaders: A Case Study Of Five Principals In New York City, Victor G. Frias Jr. Jan 2024

Examining Social Identity Among Urban School Leaders: A Case Study Of Five Principals In New York City, Victor G. Frias Jr.

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Exploring how school leaders address underrepresented student voices, meaning those of marginalized experiences along the continuum of social identity including though not limited to race, class, gender, immigration, and LGBTQ issues in schools is more essential than ever following the novel coronavirus of 2019 (COVID-19). Principals’ social identities (i.e., race, class, and gender), and their connected social locations and personal histories reveal how their leadership styles can contribute to the support of marginalized communities. Hence, this qualitative research study employed a case study methodology to investigate whether and how the social identities and lived experiences of principals in the Brooklyn …

The Role Of School Leadership In Setting The Conditions For Impactful, Sustained Social Justice Professional Development, Rod C. Bowen Jan 2024

The Role Of School Leadership In Setting The Conditions For Impactful, Sustained Social Justice Professional Development, Rod C. Bowen

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The racial diversity of children in US public schools continues to increase while most teachers and school leaders are White. In addition, systemic racism, whitewashing of curricula, microaggressions, and deficit mindsets persist within schools across the country. These pervasive injustices that plague the student experiences of children of the Global Majority must be addressed with focused, sustained intention. This study offers social justice school leadership as an effective strategy to dismantle oppressive approaches to schooling. Specifically, it explores how social justice-oriented school leaders set the conditions for impactful, sustained staff development in social justice practice. By employing multiple case study …

Anne, Martin, Emmett, And Harriet: Plays About Anne Frank And Historical African American Personages, Erin R. Scheidegger-Menendez Jan 2024

Anne, Martin, Emmett, And Harriet: Plays About Anne Frank And Historical African American Personages, Erin R. Scheidegger-Menendez

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Anne Frank is linked to her contemporaries in about 80% of 18 English-language published and produced plays. The remaining plays pair Frank and African American icons Harriet Tubman, Emmett Till, and Martin Luther King, Jr. Research on dramatic literature with Frank as a character, the writing of plays linking her with African American personages, or history, analysis, or comparison of the process of multiple plays about Frank does not exist. A few articles extant compare the Goodrich and Hackett play with the Kesselman rewrite, a dissertation on five plays about Frank (those five plays are in the 80% mentioned earlier). …

Exploring Staff Perceptions Of Meaningful Interactions With Leaders In Local Government, Brigette R. Collins Jan 2024

Exploring Staff Perceptions Of Meaningful Interactions With Leaders In Local Government, Brigette R. Collins

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The study aimed to reduce the literature gap and provide a helpful tool for understanding the follower-centered perspective of leadership in local government. Leaders are undoubtedly essential to organizational success; followers are essential, and follower perspectives of leadership are equally worthy of study (Blanchard et al., 2009). This study utilizes the critical incident technique (Flanagan, 1954) to delve into followers’ meaningful interactions and lived experiences in local government throughout the United States. Utilizing the critical incident technique (Flanagan, 1954), the study sought meaningful interactions and lived experiences of followers in local government throughout the United States. CIT lends itself to …

A Critical Incident Analysis Of Humanizing Interactions Between Correctional Officers And People Who Are Incarcerated, Aimee Califano Jan 2024

A Critical Incident Analysis Of Humanizing Interactions Between Correctional Officers And People Who Are Incarcerated, Aimee Califano

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The correctional officer (CO) has one of the most critical roles in the correctional setting and is one of the least studied topics amongst criminal justice professionals (Butler et al., 2018). In the United States, a CO’s primary responsibility is to ensure the safety and well-being of an incarcerated individual and the staff that work in the prison setting (Cheek, 1984). Paradoxically, in the United States, the CO works in an organizational system based on deprivation and punishment toward incarcerated people. The United States Prison system’s current structure does not support rehabilitation efforts of incarcerated people and ultimately impacts any …

Evaluating Native American Serving Nontribal Institutions (Nasnti) Admissions Criteria To Create An Inclusive Nursing Workforce, Tori Stanek Jan 2024

Evaluating Native American Serving Nontribal Institutions (Nasnti) Admissions Criteria To Create An Inclusive Nursing Workforce, Tori Stanek

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

The national nursing shortage is projected to increase as the bulk of the United States population ages out of the workforce and is likely to require more age-related healthcare services. The lack of ethnic, racial, and gender-based diversity in the current workforce exacerbates this shortage, and the need for a diversified workforce acknowledged by governing nursing bodies from as early as 2011 is still largely unmet. This study looks to nursing programs—specifically their application processes—as one factor that contributes to workforce disparities. Guided by several tenets of Tribalcrit Theory (Brayboy, 2005) and the Triarchic Theory of Intelligence (Sternberg, 1985), this …

Parentification And The Protective Factor Of Familismo In The Latine Community, Leury Peña Jan 2024

Parentification And The Protective Factor Of Familismo In The Latine Community, Leury Peña

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Parentification, or parent-child role reversal, occurs when children and adolescents take on parental responsibilities within the family (Boszormenyi-Nagy & Spark, 1973). This can include caring for younger siblings, attending to their parents' emotional needs, and assisting with tasks such as translation. Parentification disrupts family dynamics as parents transfer significant responsibilities to the child (Martino & Coburn, 2022). Extensive research consistently demonstrates the negative impact of parentification on children, leading to depression, suicidal feelings, shame, guilt, worry, and social isolation (Jurkovic, 1997). It can also contribute to the development of conduct disorders. Unfortunately, these difficulties often go unnoticed. However, when it …

The research addresses the following question: What is the lived experience of microaggressions in academia for BIPOC faculty in CACREP-accredited programs? To ensure participant anonymity, data was collected through an online survey hosted on SurveyMonkey. The survey included demographic items and open-ended questions with clear and concise written instructions. Data was collected from eight participants. Thematic analysis revealed six key themes: (1) personal characteristics embedded in microaggressions, (2) failure …

Enhancing Planetary Well-Being Through "With-Ness" Pedagogy In Social Emotional Learning: Critical Theoretical Engagements, Lynsey Helen Mori

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Leveraging the researcher’s unique diverse cultural and educational background, this dissertation explores integrating social emotional learning (SEL) within an innovative pedagogy of “with-ness” (PoW) towards planetary well-being in educational settings. The overarching purpose is to redefine educational strategies through SEL and PoW to advance planetary well-being in tertiary contexts. As such, this dissertation critically engages with three published articles authored during the researcher’s doctoral tenure to highlight transformative SEL practices that are fundamentally attuned to ecological consciousness. Informed by critical theory, feminist perspectives, and process philosophy, the hermeneutic circle reflects on these articles to address complex 21st-century challenges educational systems …

The Grief Of Identity Formation: How Non-Death Loss Complicates Trans Identity Narratives, R. Frank Jan 2024

The Grief Of Identity Formation: How Non-Death Loss Complicates Trans Identity Narratives, R. Frank

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Trans members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and other marginalized sexual and gender identities (LGBT+) community may be at risk of erasure from both dominant sociocultural scripts and clinical psychological research. Identity development experts have asserted that identity is fixed by late adolescence, with some room for evolution depending on context (Marcia, 2002; Sokol, 2009). Research about grief suggests that anything that has been lost has the potential to be experienced through the lens of grief (Chapple et al., 2016; Collings, 2007). This grief of non-death loss has been linked to loss of relationships, expected life trajectory, and self-concept. …

"The In-Betweeners": The Lived Experience Of Adult Cochlear Implant Users, Aylah Sroloff

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of adult cochlear implant (CI) users, implanted prior to the age of 10-years-old. Seven adult CI users were recruited. In-depth, semi-structured, qualitative interviews were conducted to explore participants’ experiences and identities as CI users. Transcripts were analyzed using interpretative phenomenological analysis, through which six group experimental themes were generated: (a) CIs and identity,” (b) social isolation, (c) advocacy, (d), costs and benefits of integration into the hearing world, and (e) “the future of CIs.” This study’s findings highlighted participants’ perspectives on living with CIs, the challenges they face, their process of identity exploration, …

Conflicts And Confluences Between Surface And Mineral Estates In Ccus, Joseph Schremmer Jan 2024

Conflicts And Confluences Between Surface And Mineral Estates In Ccus, Joseph Schremmer

Wyoming Law Review

Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) presents a new way of using an old resource: the subterranean rock structures and their interstitial “pore” space that make up the subsurface of the earth. Injecting carbon into these structures also raises a number of new legal questions about their ownership and the relations between the owners of the structures and the owners of other subsurface resources contained within them, like oil and gas, coal, coalbed methane, and geologically native carbon dioxide. This Article explores these new legal questions and the conceptual difficulties they present with the aim of guiding participants in CCUS …

Coattailing For Regime Continuity?: Unraveling Duterte's Legacy In Marcos Jr.'S 2022 Electoral Victory, Gabrielle Ann S. Mendoza, Imelda B. Deinla, Cristine Lian C. Domingo, Jurel K. Yap Jan 2024

Coattailing For Regime Continuity?: Unraveling Duterte's Legacy In Marcos Jr.'S 2022 Electoral Victory, Gabrielle Ann S. Mendoza, Imelda B. Deinla, Cristine Lian C. Domingo, Jurel K. Yap

Ateneo School of Government Publications

The electoral victory of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has been attributed to a range of factors such as misinformation, patronage, and populism. We argue that Marcos’ electoral victory should not be treated as an isolated instantaneous event, but rather a result of a shift in the country's political narrative due to the legacy of his predecessor. The shift to illiberal populism is tied to the public's continued support for Duterte's flagship policies as well as in the proliferation of populist rhetoric on social media. Using a non-probability survey of 1500 Filipinos, we find that support for President Duterte and his …

Esg Investing: Government Push Or Market Pull?, Mendenhall, Allen, Sutter, Daniel Jan 2024

Esg Investing: Government Push Or Market Pull?, Mendenhall, Allen, Sutter, Daniel

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

This Article documents various government actions driving the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) movement to offer perspective on the debate regarding whether markets or governments propel ESG. These include mandating an energy transition; promulgating laws, rules, and directives compelling ESG reporting; and providing generous tax incentives and financial subsidies. We document the government push for ESG in the United States, Europe, and other Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) nations, and by international financial institutions. We do not deny that many investors across the globe are interested in ESG as opposed to only private returns. However, the breadth and …

Counterterrorism Uses Of Force: The Laws Of War And Jus Ad Vim, Salomon, Paolo Jan 2024

Counterterrorism Uses Of Force: The Laws Of War And Jus Ad Vim, Salomon, Paolo

Santa Clara Journal of International Law

Al Qaeda’s terror attacks against the United States on September 11, 2001, introduced heretofore unseen issues under International Humanitarian Law. After Al-Qaeda’s attacks, the Bush administration began its Global War on Terror by invading Afghanistan in order to find those responsible for the attacks on September 11, 20001. This invasion caused Al-Qaeda to flee into Pakistan’s Tribal Areas in order to evade American forces. The Bush administration began employing drone strikes in Pakistan’s Tribal Areas to degrade Al-Qaeda’s ability to conduct operations against the United States. The Obama administration continued and expanded the use of drone strikes. Amid the use …

R.I.P. R2p - And Yet It Moves: It Is Premature To Declare The Responsibility To Protect Dead - No, It Needs Cpr In The Dark Ages Of The 2020s!, Lily Katinka Svanberg

South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business

This work is about R2P and the responsibility to protect. Currently, the R2P doctrine is under serious pressure. The world climate has changed rapidly since the days of the launch of the R2P principle in 2001, and its most frequent references in 2011-2014, culminating in "responsibility not to veto" (RNVT) proposals in 2015. Recent grave violations of international law in the 2020s, resulting in alleged mass atrocities, have resulted in pessimism about the feasibility of R2P, and the declaration of its death. This article evaluates the 2000s decline in UNSC-mandated military action taken under Chapter VII from the perspective of …

Good Faith As Mechanism For An Efficient Market, Victor Caminha Cavalcante Jan 2024

Good Faith As Mechanism For An Efficient Market, Victor Caminha Cavalcante

South Carolina Journal of International Law and Business

This article explores the role of the principle of good faith in enhancing commercial efficiency within Brazilian, Italian and U.S. legal systems. The principle, recognized under Brazilian Civil Law since the enactment of the 2002 Civil Code, is compared with its application under U.S. law, particularly through the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) and Restatement (Second) of Contracts, and under Italian Civil Code. The study analyzes how good faith, as an objective legal standard, fosters contractual fairness, transparency, and predictability, thereby contributing to a more structured and efficient market. By examining case law, scholarly perspectives, and the interaction between traditional and …

Cruel And Unusual Punishment: A Human Rights-Based Argument For Extending The Eighth Amendment To Capital Punishment Methods, Brittany Walker Jan 2024

Cruel And Unusual Punishment: A Human Rights-Based Argument For Extending The Eighth Amendment To Capital Punishment Methods, Brittany Walker

Human Rights Brief

Though Americans generally support capital punishment, there are many issues with how states currently choose to execute individuals, including concern that the different execution methods used by states to carry out capital punishment violates the Eighth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, lack of regulation of states and lack of accountability. Further, certain execution methods may violate the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). This article suggests recommendations for state legislatures, the United States Congress, and the Supreme Court for ensuring the humane treatment of individuals during an execution.

Legal Reforms And Women’S Rights Advocacy In Africa, Emelyne Calimoutou Dr. Jan 2024

Legal Reforms And Women’S Rights Advocacy In Africa, Emelyne Calimoutou Dr.

Human Rights Brief

Although Gambia enacted the Women’s (Amendment) Act in 2015, which criminalized female genital mutilation and imposed penalties of up to three years in prison, the parliament is currently deliberating on a bill to overturn the Act.

The prospect of Gambia becoming the first country to reverse legislation against female genital mutilation is alarming, not only for its immediate implications on women’s health, but also for the precedent it could set for other states. It serves as a reminder of the fragility of women’s rights protections in the face of deeply entrenched social practices and underscores the urgent need for a …

Forging Ahead: Protecting Against Forced Labor In Global Supply Chains And The Evolving Landscape Of Labor Rights, Gemma Muirhead Jan 2024

Forging Ahead: Protecting Against Forced Labor In Global Supply Chains And The Evolving Landscape Of Labor Rights, Gemma Muirhead

Human Rights Brief

Historically, trade agreements primarily focused on facilitating economic exchange between nations, with little direct consideration given to the treatment of individuals within those countries. Issues of human rights were often addressed through separate channels such as boycotts, NGO campaigns, international pressure, and United Nations interventions, but were not inherently linked to trade agreements themselves. Over time, the adoption of sanctions and other unilateral trade measures aimed at enhancing transparency concerning human rights abuses in foreign supply chains has gained traction, particularly in the United States and the European Union. These jurisdictions frequently apply sanctions for diverse purposes, including fostering democratic …
