Critical Reflection And Early Career Instructor Formation, Rafael Alexandre Mello Dec 2024

Critical Reflection And Early Career Instructor Formation, Rafael Alexandre Mello

All Faculty Scholarship

Mello develops a reflection on what it means to prepare early career instructors for their career in teaching. This chapter proposes to reconceptualize this preparation in terms of formation, juxtaposed to training. Conceptualized as an often unconscious process, training steers the early career learner to neglect reflexivity and critical thinking and become a passive absorber of knowledge. Formation as a process, however, centers the ECI as an agent of their own learning by privileging critical reflection on and engagement with disciplinary knowledge, history, and politics, with the practices of learning-teaching, and the ways they relate. The chapter intertwines …

Moral Panic And The First Amendment, Michael L. Smith Dec 2024

Moral Panic And The First Amendment, Michael L. Smith

Buffalo Law Review

Debates over free speech in the United States frequently see advocates of strong, broad protections at odds with those who argue that unfettered free speech tends to harm society’s most vulnerable. Free speech advocates invoke the marketplace of ideas and argue that the antidote to false or harmful speech is more speech. In response, critics contend that speech itself causes harm and chills counter-speech— effectively excluding marginalized groups, including women and LGBTQ people, from discourse altogether. These critics support limitations on robust free speech doctrine targeting speech that harms marginalized communities.

This Article identifies a significant wrinkle in this narrative: …

Inventory Tracking System, Anthony B., Ankita Hattangady Dec 2024

Inventory Tracking System, Anthony B., Ankita Hattangady

Senior Design Project For Engineers

The project will target the three big issues that the Kennesaw State University Textile Department is currently facing. The first is real-time tracking of inventory. We want to create a system that tracks how much inventory is always available to be used, and how much depletes each time a student/ faculty member uses a product. As restocking finished items is a long process, low stock alerts may help combat wait times. This system tracks when an item is running low and is able to send out low stock alerts in order to avoid shortages and make repurchases easier. The second …

Roving Extraterritoriality: The Murky Doctrine On State Laws Regulating Absent Citizens, Leo Schlueter Dec 2024

Roving Extraterritoriality: The Murky Doctrine On State Laws Regulating Absent Citizens, Leo Schlueter

Notre Dame Law Review

It is generally agreed that sovereigns have the power to punish the crimes of their citizens abroad, at least in some situations. But sovereigns rarely exercise this power, and its contours are not well understood. This is especially true in the context of American federalism. It is unclear to what degree states have retained their sovereign extraterritorial powers, and the Supreme Court has never had occasion to fully explain their limits. Recent political developments, however, make it plausible that the question will soon arise. This Note attempts to provide some insight into the future debate over state criminal extraterritorial jurisdiction …

Duncan NRI Faculty and Staff Publications

This proof-of-concept study uses individualized functional magnetic resonance imaging neuromodulation (iNM) to explore the mechanisms that enhance BOLD signals in visuospatial perception (VP) networks that are crucial for navigation. Healthy participants (n = 8) performed a VP up- and down-direction discrimination task at full and subthreshold coherence through peripheral vision, and superimposed direction through visual imagery (VI) at central space under iNM and control conditions. iNM targets individualized anatomical and functional middle- and medial-superior temporal (MST) networks that control VP. We found that iNM engaged selective exteroceptive and interoceptive attention (SEIA) and motor planning (MP) networks. Specifically, iNM increased …

Famous Last Words: A Study Of Faith In Texas Death Row Inmates, Mariah Podwika Dec 2024

Famous Last Words: A Study Of Faith In Texas Death Row Inmates, Mariah Podwika

Honors Program Theses and Research Projects

Historically, final statements of condemned individuals prior to execution have shown a pattern of the presence of some type of religious sentiment. However, the justification and reasoning behind religious remarks still remains elusive given the finality of the event. The State of Texas is unique given the state provides a substantial amount of information pertaining to final statements due to the recording process of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ). Similar to rituals of recording condemned individuals’ last statements from the fourteenth century, prison wardens in Texas give the condemned an opportunity to share their last words, which are …

Integrative Hyperspectral Approaches For Advanced Soil Property Analysis And Environmental Monitoring, Nayma Binte Nur

Theses

Hyperspectral imaging has emerged as a powerful tool for enhancing the analysis of diverse soil properties and environmental monitoring. This study refines the precision of soil biogeophysical analyses by improving the estimation of soil moisture content (SMC), soil organic matter (SOM), total carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) through hyperspectral remote sensing techniques. The research examines the capabilities of two prominent moisture retrieval models: the multilayer radiative transfer model (MARMIT) and the modified soil water parametric (SWAP)-Hapke model. These models are evaluated using hyperspectral imagery derived from unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and goniometric data collected across various environmental settings. The findings …

Near Real-Time Center Of Gravity Estimation Of An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Carola Vasquez Dec 2024

Near Real-Time Center Of Gravity Estimation Of An Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Carola Vasquez

Theses

As UAV technology advances and finds broader applications across industries, real-time estimation of the center of gravity (CG) becomes crucial for ensuring safe and efficient flight. Accurate CG estimation is vital not only for UAVs but also for manned aircraft, as it significantly influences stability and control by indicating the point where the entire weight is evenly distributed. Variations in CG, resulting from changes in altitude, attitude, speed, fuel consumption, and payload, directly impact stability and may lead to compromised performance and increased risk of accidents if not monitored. Existing methods focus on regression analysis, multi-accelerometer measurements, and pitching moment …

Addressing Agency In Intersectional Leadership: The Consequences Of Agentic Leader Behaviors For Black And White Men And Women In Leadership, Sydney Roux Dec 2024

Addressing Agency In Intersectional Leadership: The Consequences Of Agentic Leader Behaviors For Black And White Men And Women In Leadership, Sydney Roux

LSU Master's Theses

As Black women gain representation in business and entrepreneurial leadership, it is important to consider how these women will be perceived as leaders. Role congruity theory (RCT) posits that women’s gender roles do not align with the leadership role which often negatively impacts leader evaluations. However, RCT is often employed without a racial context where women are presumed to be White, and thus, it is unclear if the same assumptions can be applied to Black women. Leadership scholars have identified the ways in which attributions and expectations of leaders are shaped by both demographic characteristics and behavioral events. Because Black …

This staff educational project addressed a gap in practice involving minimal nursing intervention to support antipsychotic medication adherence. Antipsychotic medication nonadherence results in undermanaged schizophrenia, which is associated with relapse psychotic episodes, suicidality, and violence. Therefore, the project’s purpose was to educate the providers on long-acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotic medication to facilitate the use of the medications to address antipsychotic medication nonadherence. Eight providers were involved in the educational intervention and were educated on the LAI antipsychotic treatment intervention through an interactive educational session. Knowledge surveys were administered before and after the educational intervention. The collected data were analyzed using …

Nanofabrication Of Tetraphenyl Porphyrin Surface Assemblies Linked With Tin Tetrachloride: A Scanning Probe Microscopy Investigation, Quynh Do Dec 2024

Nanofabrication Of Tetraphenyl Porphyrin Surface Assemblies Linked With Tin Tetrachloride: A Scanning Probe Microscopy Investigation, Quynh Do

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Scanning probe microscopy (SPM) and colloidal lithography methods were used to study the covalent coupling of porphyrins to surfaces. In this dissertation, experimental methods for SPM operation, techniques, and applications are described. Measurement of tip-sample interactions between a sharp tip and surface is translated into digital image data maps with x-, y-, and z-data. Colloidal lithography can be used to fabricate test platforms for AFM studies. The periodicity and arrangement of the designed nanostructures is determined by the size of the colloidal particles used for surface masks. Data processing is required to obtain images and topography information from raw AFM …

Textualism In Practice, Anita S. Krishnakumar Dec 2024

Textualism In Practice, Anita S. Krishnakumar

Duke Law Journal

Textualism has won the statutory interpretation wars. But despite this theoretical and methodological victory, textualism as practiced on the ground has proved less transformational than expected. Indeed, contrary to what textualist interpretive philosophy long has promised, the widespread embrace of textualism by judges on the ground has not resulted in any real clarity or predictability about the interpretive path—or even the specific interpretive tools—courts will invoke to construe a statute in a particular case. Part of the reason for this lack of predictability is that textualism as practiced often differs significantly from the approach that textualism as an interpretive philosophy …
