More Than Just A Grade: Factors Influencing Secondary Students’ Engagement With Digital Feedback, Mandy Prior
More Than Just A Grade: Factors Influencing Secondary Students’ Engagement With Digital Feedback, Mandy Prior
Dissertations
The increasing use of technology in secondary education has shifted teacher feedback practices to digital environments. While digital feedback offers many promising affordances, the factors that influence how students engage with and use digital feedback are not well understood. Previous research indicates that digital feedback poses unique challenges for engagement. New paradigm feedback models seek to identify processes and actions that promote feedback engagement. However, these models require further study in digital and pre-higher education contexts. This qualitative single-case study investigated the factors influencing secondary students' engagement with digital feedback. Data included 24 student interviews conducted across four grade levels …

Data Intensive Method For Processing Defect Detection And Mitigation For Composites, Deepak Kumar
Data Intensive Method For Processing Defect Detection And Mitigation For Composites, Deepak Kumar
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Composite manufacturing without processing defects is a crucial step in satisfying the production, performance, and quality requirements of composite materials in various industries. Autoclave processing enables manufacturing of high-quality composite parts with excellent mechanical properties, whereas additive manufacturing (AM) offers adaptability to complex designs and streamlined processes. However, each method presents unique challenges; despite the benefits, autoclave processes can still result in processing defects, and AM is particularly susceptible to processing anomalies owing to the novelty of the process. Ensuring the quality and reliability of composite manufacturing is essential to fully capitalize on the advantages offered by both techniques. Artificial …
Stellar Properties From A Self-Consistent Analysis, Pius Privatus, Pulapa V Kanaka Rao, Cirino Pappalardo
Stellar Properties From A Self-Consistent Analysis, Pius Privatus, Pulapa V Kanaka Rao, Cirino Pappalardo
Tanzania Journal of Science
Galaxies’ spectral energy distribution (SED) has been explored through the use of spectral synthesis codes. Most of the codes so far are solely stellar and assume a negligible nebular contribution. Fitting Analysis using Differential Evolution Optimisation (FADO) is the first spectral synthesis tool to consider the nebular contribution. The study examines how the primary stellar attributes are affected when FADO is applied to the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics and Johns Hopkins University (MPA-JHU) data, namely the star-formation rate, metallicity, and stellar mass. The findings show that nebular emission results in the change of the slope of the equation of …

Tag-Based Security In C: Writing And Specifying Flexible Protection, Sean Noble Anderson
Tag-Based Security In C: Writing And Specifying Flexible Protection, Sean Noble Anderson
Dissertations and Theses
The C language is ubiquitous and insecure. Tag-based security policies offer a flexible toolkit for runtime protection, including policies that mitigate the effects of undetected programming bugs and those that enforce security properties of the program logic. But tag policies can be difficult to define, and the protection that they offer can be difficult to specify and to prove.
This dissertation builds from an assembly-level specification of stack safety, encompassing the essential control-flow structure of C and other high level languages, to a C source-level policy definition framework called Tagged C. Tagged C includes a variant C semantics parameterized by …

You can pack a lot of friendship, feelings, and field hockey into 45 years. Playing on a field hockey team teaches you a lot about yourself and others—including some things you didn’t want to know. Friends who turn out to be as poisonous as toadstools may be the same ones who help you and become a part of who you are. They might even be the friends who will be with you for the rest of your life.
Landslide Mapping, Characterization, And Hazard Assessment With 3d Slope Stability Modeling In White Bluffs, Washington State, Anna Tsitsivas
Landslide Mapping, Characterization, And Hazard Assessment With 3d Slope Stability Modeling In White Bluffs, Washington State, Anna Tsitsivas
Dissertations and Theses
Slope failures shape the landscape by moving unstable material downslope and, in doing so, become a great hazard to all those in their path. Understanding the mechanisms that control landslide location, timing, size, type, and runout - and therefore hazards - requires a deep understanding of the local geology, stratigraphy, and groundwater conditions. Along White Bluffs, in south-central Washington, landslides of several failure styles have likely been triggered by an increased water table in recent decades, threatening both farmland behind the bluffs and habitat below. This study focuses on characterizing potential groundwater sources and determining controls on spatial and temporal …

Elevated Ambient Temperature Associated With Reduced Infectious Disease Test Positivity Rates: Retrospective Observational Analysis Of Statewide Covid-19 Testing And Weather Across California Counties., Nicholas Wing-Ping Kwok, Joshua Pevnick, Keith Feldman
Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
BACKGROUND: From medication usage to the time of day, a number of external factors are known to alter human body temperature (BT), even in the absence of underlying pathology. In select cases, clinical guidance already suggests the consideration of clinical and demographic factors when interpreting BT, such as a decreased threshold for fever as age increases. Recent work has indicated factors impacting BT extend to environmental conditions including ambient temperature. However, the effect sizes of these relationships are often small, and it remains unclear if such relationships result in a meaningful impact on real-world health care practices.
OBJECTIVE: Temperature remains …

A Hellenistic Scale Weight From ‘Akko, Gerald Finkielsztejn
A Hellenistic Scale Weight From ‘Akko, Gerald Finkielsztejn
'Atiqot
A rare Hellenistic lead scale weight was retrieved from a Hellenistic-period accumulation layer (L121) excavated behind the moat counterscarp wall in the ‘Akko Ottoman fortifications (see Gosker, this volume). The well-preserved ‘Akko Moat weight sheds new light on the iconography and metrology of a series of weights, as it is similar to a lead weight of the same series found underwater offshore from ‘Atlit (Finkielsztejn 2016), and it exhibits some similar features to two other lead weights—one from an excavation at the ‘Akko Post Office, and the other from the Moussaief Collection. The ‘Akko Moat weight is described here, followed …
The Elusive Fortifications Of Yafo (Jaffa), Yoav Arbel
The Elusive Fortifications Of Yafo (Jaffa), Yoav Arbel
'Atiqot
The port city of Yafo was fortified during much of its four millennia of existence. However, today, even its most recent Ottoman walls are dismantled, and only fragmentary parts of its earlier fortifications have been traced despite decades of research and salvage excavations on the mound and its environs. These limited discoveries cannot provide a comprehensive delineation of any pre-Ottoman defensive lines. Nevertheless, new discoveries, the mapping of scattered sites, comparative observations and consultation with historical sources can shed some light on Yafo’s otherwise obscure fortifications through its many phases, as well as on various related issues. Through these we …
Trebuchets Were Not Siege Guns, So Why Use Them?, Michael S. Fulton
Trebuchets Were Not Siege Guns, So Why Use Them?, Michael S. Fulton
'Atiqot
Counterweight trebuchets were the most powerful ballistic weapons of their day, but their association with later siege guns has led to misunderstandings of their destructive capabilities. This article is an attempt to correct some misguided ideas by providing a short overview of the power and value of mechanical artillery and contextualizing its use in the Levant during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. After addressing the origin of certain theories that these engines were far more destructive than seems to have been the reality, a brief assessment of their actual power is conducted by looking at the ways sources exaggerate the …

'Atiqot
This article examines a sword discovered on the seabed near Newe-Yam, providing an analysis of its physical characteristics. The location of the discovery and the submarine iron corrosion processes are described. The sword, covered in a biogenic crust, was studied using non- and minimally invasive techniques, and compared with contemporary swords. A European origin and an approximate date in the twelfth–thirteenth centuries CE are proposed. The study also discusses the role of swords in Medieval European society, their association with authority and chivalry, and the romantic perceptions concerning Crusader swords.
Were There Jewish Gladiators? A Re-Evaluation Of The Available Archaeological And Textual Evidence, Haggai Olshanetsky
Were There Jewish Gladiators? A Re-Evaluation Of The Available Archaeological And Textual Evidence, Haggai Olshanetsky
'Atiqot
The participation of Jews in the arena, especially as gladiators, has received relatively little attention. The few articles written on this matter suggest that Jews were both spectators and participants. The present paper relates to all previously suggested indications for the existence of Jewish gladiators and also introduces new ones. Although the possibility that Jewish gladiators were active in the first–fourth centuries CE cannot be ruled out entirely, the evidence remains inconclusive, suggesting that their number was very limited at best. It is also suggested that if Jews had participated in the games, they possibly preferred to fight beasts rather …
Evidence Of The Roman Attack On The Third Wall Of Jerusalem At The End Of The Second Temple Period, Kfir Arbiv
Evidence Of The Roman Attack On The Third Wall Of Jerusalem At The End Of The Second Temple Period, Kfir Arbiv
'Atiqot
Remains of a first-century CE wall segment and a tower base uncovered in the Russian Compound, Jerusalem, shed light on the course of the Third Wall in the west of the city and the fierce battle that took place there in the First Jewish Revolt. A concentration of ballista stones and other weapons at the site support the evidence furnished by Josephus in Jewish War, describing the battle at the Third Wall and the siege imposed by Titus on Jerusalem in 70 CE. The archaeological evidence and the historical sources enable a reconstruction of the battle between the Roman army …
Hematite Mace-Heads: A Specialized Craft Unique To The Late Chalcolithic Period, Michael Sebbane
Hematite Mace-Heads: A Specialized Craft Unique To The Late Chalcolithic Period, Michael Sebbane
'Atiqot
The mace was one of the most important and commonly used weapons for striking and smashing in hand-to-hand combat in the battlefields of the ancient Near East, from the tenth to the second half of the third millennia BCE. Outside the battlefield, the mace served ceremonial and ritual functions, which persisted long after its use as a weapon ceased. Hematite mace-heads are unique in the Late Chalcolithic culture that flourished in the region of Israel and Transjordan from the second half of the fifth to the first half of the fourth millennia BCE. They seem to be one of the …

Empowering Inner City Communities: Some Observations, Engdawork Desta
The Geographical Bulletin
The federal government's engagement in dealing with U.S. inner city concerns has been extensive although the results have not been satisfactory. In spite of repeated special considerations given to the problems, the lack of lasting solutions necessitated launching new urban empowerment zone and enterprise community projects in recent years. This paper reflects on the attempts made thus far to change inner city conditions and the inevitable challenges of development faced in market economies. Certain preliminary assessments are made with regard to the current Empowerment Zone project, using Baltimore city as an example.
