Reimagining The Inclusive Jury, Anna Offit Jan 2024

Reimagining The Inclusive Jury, Anna Offit

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, everyday life for many Americans was upended. And yet, the jury trial remained viable — even vital. Faced with an era-defining public health disaster, courts innovated, embracing novel technologies and techniques to reimagine where and how justice might be made. But why did it take a pandemic to spur this kind of institutional creativity? Prior to the outbreak of COVID-19, people who were otherwise eligible to participate as jurors were routinely — and uncontroversially — struck or exempted from service due to limited mobility, vision and hearing loss, and caregiving responsibilities. Recent experience …

The Quick And The Dead: The Uses And Misuses Of History In Abortion Jurisprudence, Joanna L. Grossman, Lawrence M. Friedman Jan 2024

The Quick And The Dead: The Uses And Misuses Of History In Abortion Jurisprudence, Joanna L. Grossman, Lawrence M. Friedman

Faculty Journal Articles and Book Chapters

In 1860, in Nevada County, California, a young woman, Clara Davis, died in her home. She had given birth, secretly, during the night. The baby had been spirited away by a man named Henry McCracken, who also lived in the house, and who was presumably the father of the child. The facts strongly suggested that the child had been born prematurely, as a result of an induced abortion. McCracken had applied to a physician for abortion medication, which he administered to Clara, supposedly for back pains, but in reality "knowingly ... to procure an abortion." McCracken was arrested and put …

Background: Mind-body treatments have the potential to manage pain, yet their effectiveness when delivered online for the treatment of low back pain (LBP) is unknown. We sought to evaluate whether a virtually delivered mind-body program integrating tai chi, qigong, and meditation (VDTQM) is effective for treating LBP.

Methods: This randomized controlled trial compared VDTQM (n=175) to waitlist control (n=175). Eligible participants were at least 18 years old, had LBP for at least 6 weeks, were not pregnant, had not previously taken tai chi classes, and had not undergone spine surgery within 6 months. The treatment group received a 12-week VDTQM …

Promoting Understanding Of Three Dimensions Of Science Learning Plus Nature Of Science Using Phenomenon-Based Learning, Maryam Saberi, Noushin Nouri Jan 2024

Promoting Understanding Of Three Dimensions Of Science Learning Plus Nature Of Science Using Phenomenon-Based Learning, Maryam Saberi, Noushin Nouri

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

The utilization of phenomenon-based learning (PhBL) for science instruction remains limited despite its alignment with the goals outlined in the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS; NGSS Lead States, 2013) due to the lack of exemplary materials and inadequate training opportunities for teachers. The aim of this article is to illustrate the steps of the PhBL method by providing an exploratory learning experience as it was implemented in a preservice setting. In this study, we provide an innovative perspective by illuminating how this kind of instruction can be used as a context to explicitly discuss the three dimensions of learning (i.e., …

Over many years now, Tim Williamson and I have engaged in debates over fundamental issues concerning logic. On some things, we have disagreed strongly; on others, we have agreed.

Protein aggregation is linked to many chronic and devastating neurodegenerative human diseases and is strongly associated with aging. This work demonstrates that protein aggregation and oligomerization can be evaluated by a solid-state nanopore method at the single molecule level. A silicon nitride nanopore sensor was used to characterize both the amyloidogenic and native-state oligomerization of a model protein ß-lactoglobulin variant A (βLGa). The findings from the nanopore measurements are validated against atomic force microscopy (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) data, comparing βLGa aggregation from the same samples at various stages. By calibrating with linear and circular dsDNA, this study …

Mechanical, Electronic, Optical, Piezoelectric And Ferroic Properties Of Strained Graphene And Other Strained Monolayers And Multilayers: An Update, Gerardo G. Naumis, Saul A. Herrera, Shiva Prasad Poudel, Hiro Nakamura, Salvador Barraza-Lopez Jan 2024

Mechanical, Electronic, Optical, Piezoelectric And Ferroic Properties Of Strained Graphene And Other Strained Monolayers And Multilayers: An Update, Gerardo G. Naumis, Saul A. Herrera, Shiva Prasad Poudel, Hiro Nakamura, Salvador Barraza-Lopez

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This is an update of a previous review (Naumis et al 2017 Rep. Prog. Phys.80 096501). Experimental and theoretical advances for straining graphene and other metallic, insulating, ferroelectric, ferroelastic, ferromagnetic and multiferroic 2D materials were considered. We surveyed (i) methods to induce valley and sublattice polarisation (P) in graphene, (ii) time-dependent strain and its impact on graphene's electronic properties, (iii) the role of local and global strain on superconductivity and other highly correlated and/or topological phases of graphene, (iv) inducing polarisation P on hexagonal boron nitride monolayers via strain, (v) modifying the optoelectronic properties of transition metal …

The Factors And Obstacles Affecting The Documentation Of Knowledge And Experiences In The Libraries Of Khorasan Razavi Provinces Universities, Alireza Atarodi, Maryam Salimi, Jamileh Naeimi Jan 2024

The Factors And Obstacles Affecting The Documentation Of Knowledge And Experiences In The Libraries Of Khorasan Razavi Provinces Universities, Alireza Atarodi, Maryam Salimi, Jamileh Naeimi

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

Introduction: The current study aims to assess the prioritization of factors and barriers influencing the documentation of knowledge and experiences in university libraries across the Khorasan provinces, as perceived by librarians.

Methods: This applied research employed a survey-analytical methodology, focusing on librarians with library qualifications in central academic libraries of Khorasan. 102 individuals were selected using Cochran's formula. A researcher-designed questionnaire was validated, with data analyzed using descriptive (mean) and inferential statistics (Friedman's non-parametric test).

Results: Key findings indicate that cultural infrastructure, structural provisions, legal frameworks, and technological advancements significantly impact the documentation of knowledge and experiences. …

An Examination Of The Visual And Textual Influences On The Anthology Of American Folk Music, Ben Collier Jan 2024

An Examination Of The Visual And Textual Influences On The Anthology Of American Folk Music, Ben Collier

History Theses

The Anthology of American Folk Music is a collection of eight-four selections of southern vernacular recordings made for commercial record labels in the 1920s and 1930s and assembled into a unified collage by Harry Smith. Smith was an experimental filmmaker, painter, and self-taught anthropologist with a deep interest in renaissance hermeticism and mysticism who worked with Moe Asch in 1952 to release the six-record set and accompanying handbook on Folkways Records. The release was heralded by musicians and critics as an essential piece of influence on the folk music revival. Despite this, the Anthology sold poorly and quickly faced legal …
