Created Stepping-Stone Configurations Depend On Task Constraints, Jeffrey B. Wagman, Maisha Tahsin Orthy, Amy M. Jeschke, Tyler Duffrin

Faculty Publications – Psychology

Previous studies have shown that choices about how to configure stepping-stones to be used as playground or exercise equipment reflect a person’s action capabilities. In two experiments, we investigated whether choices about how to configure stepping-stones to be used as a path for locomotion additionally reflect the goals for which or the constraints under which the path is to be used. In Experiment 1, participants created stepping-stone configurations (with rubber mats) that would allow them to cross a given space quickly, comfortably, or carefully. Configurations in the “Quickly” condition consisted of fewer mats, and longer mean (linear) distances between mats, …

Centering Veg*Ns Of Color: An Intersectional Imperative To Anti-Veg*N Stigma, Caitlin M. Mercier

Faculty Publications – Psychology

Veg*ns of color continue to be underrepresented with their health less understood in veg*n scholarship. As intersectionality and health outcomes remain an understudied focus in anti-veg*n scholarship, the concealable stigmatized identity (CSI) framework offers a way to identify the link between stigmatization and health outcomes for VOC. Using the CSI framework, the paper provides a review of multilevel manifestations of anti-veg*n stigmatization in previous and current veg*n scholarship. The paper offers future directions for researchers to examine stigmatization and its impact on VOC. Recommendations are provided to generate knowledge about the experiences and health of VOC.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is characterized by the accumulation of malignant plasma cells preferentially in the bone marrow. Currently, emerging chemotherapy drugs with improved biosafety profiles, such as immunomodulatory agents and protease inhibitors, have been used in clinics to treat MM in both initial therapy or maintenance therapy post autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (ASCT). We previously discovered that caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), a water-insoluble natural compound, inhibited the growth of MM cells by inducing oxidative stress. As part of our continuous effort to pursue a less toxic yet more effective therapeutic approach for MM, the objective of this study …

Empowering Consumer Rights And Community Welfare: Enhancing Corporate Accountability Through A Geographical Indication Licensing Policy, Akriti ., Sarang Sureshrao Khadkekar, Pinaki Ghosh

International Journal on Consumer Law and Practice

Geographical Indications are a unique form of intellectual property that can potentially improve social-economic welfare. The Indian GI Act is based on the concept of consumer welfare, which prevents market activities that can mislead or confuse consumers. Such confusion can be about the source of origin, the quality, or the reputation of the goods. However, several studies have shown the rampant use of GI names by unauthorized persons and Corporations, creating dangers of diluting the reputation of GI names. Such unauthorized use of GI names results in an unfair commercial advantage to these infringers. Not only that, a genuine consumer …

To facilitate the integration of autonomous unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) in day-to-day life, it is imperative that safe navigation can be demonstrated in all relevant scenarios. For UAVs using a navigational protocol driven by artificial neural networks, training and testing data from multiple environmental contexts are needed to ensure that bias is minimised. The reduction in predictive capacity when faced with unfamiliar data is a common weak point in trained networks, which worsens the further the input data deviates from the training data. However, training for multiple environmental variables dramatically increases the man-hours required for data collection and validation. In …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

In order to dye cellulose or regenerated cellulose with natural dyes, toxic metal mordants are generally employed. In response to this issue, the novel bifunctional cationic agent was pretreated to modify modal (regenerated cellulose) fabric prior to dyeing to enhance the fiber-dye affinity. The cationization reaction was carried out using a compound containing bicationic sites, N,N'-(oxybis (ethane-2,1-diyl))bis(3-chloro-2-hydroxy-N,N-dimethylpropan-1-aminium. This unique cationic agent is capable of producing nonvolatile amine and has no odor problem. The successful cationic modification was confirmed through FTIR spectroscopy and zeta potential measurement. The cationized process was optimized at a cationic and sodium hydroxide concentration …

Designing Biphasic Nanocellulose Hydrogels To Mimic The Complex Cartilage-Bone Interface, Sairash Sairash, Sirinee Jirajessada, Supansa Yodmuang

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Osteochondral lesions, which affect both the cartilage and the bone, present significant challenges in treatment due to the complex mechanical and biochemical properties of these tissues. A crucial consideration in developing tissue replacements for these lesions is the simultaneous regeneration of cartilage and calcified cartilage, which forms the transition zone to bone. Our current study aims to fabricate a bilayer polymeric hydrogel designed not only to support cartilage regeneration but also to serve as an interface between cartilage and bone. The bilayer hydrogel was created by combining oxidized bacterial nanocellulose, gelatin, and alginate in one layer, while the other layer …

Flattening Breast Cancer By Removing The Breasts: Protecting A Woman's Right To Choose Reconstruction Of An Aesthetic Flat Chest After A Mastectomy, Amelia Landenberger

Akron Law Faculty Publications

Breast cancer takes away women’s choices. Many women decide to regain control of their bodies and prevent future cancer or follow-up surgeries by having a double mastectomy without any reconstruction, leaving a fat chest. When their doctors refuse to perform this surgery or their insurers refuse to cover this form of chest reconstruction, women are traumatized by their loss of choice in a system that clings to the outdated idea that women cannot be feminine without breasts. The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 was intended to protect women facing cancer from the second trauma of being unable …

21st Century Churches And Federal Tax Law, Lloyd Hitoshi Mayer, Ellen P. Aprill Jan 2024

21st Century Churches And Federal Tax Law, Lloyd Hitoshi Mayer, Ellen P. Aprill

Journal Articles

Federal tax treatment matters to churches, the term the IRS uses for all types of religious congregations, including synagogues, mosques, and temples. The federal tax provisions most significant for churches and certain entities closely related to them, however, are not those that the public and commentators often assume. Exemption from income tax and the ability of donors to deduct contributions, the benefits that receive the most public attention, in fact provide surprisingly little benefit either to churches in the aggregate or to most individual churches. Their status as organizations taxexempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, moreover, imposes …

Churching Nimbys: Creating Affordable Housing On Church Property, Patrick E. Reidy, C.S.C. Jan 2024

Churching Nimbys: Creating Affordable Housing On Church Property, Patrick E. Reidy, C.S.C.

Journal Articles

In recent years, faith communities across the United States have begun to create affordable housing on church property, inspired by sincerely held religious beliefs. Some are building microhomes behind their houses of worship. Others are converting residences once used by religious ministers—from rectories to abbeys to convents—into units for seniors and low-income families. Still others are repurposing their vacant schools, church parking lots, and undeveloped parcels of land for denser multifamily structures, from townhouses to apartment buildings. Within housing-advocacy circles and among faith communities, these continent-wide efforts to create affordable housing on church property have manifested an affirmative declaration: “Yes, …

Sacred Easements, Patrick E. Reidy, C.S.C. Jan 2024

Sacred Easements, Patrick E. Reidy, C.S.C.

Journal Articles

In the last forty years, Native American faith communities have struggled to protect their sacred sites using religious liberty law. When confronting threats to sacred lands, Native Americans stridently assert constitutional and statutory free exercise protections against public authorities. But unlike litigation involving non-Indian religious property, cases involving sacred sites seek to protect land that tribal faith communities do not themselves own. Because they lack an explicit ownership interest, Native Americans struggle to protect their sacred sites from desecration and destruction. Courts asked to weigh Indian religious liberty claims against non-Indian property claims always side with the landowner. Since sacred …

A Scoping Review On Mobile Health Technology For Assessment And Intervention Of Upper Limb Motor Function In Children With Motor Impairments, Md Raihan Mia, Sheikh Iqbal Ahamed, Alissa V. Fial, Samuel Nemanich

Computer Science Faculty Research and Publications

Upper limb (UL) motor dysfunctions impact residual movement in hands/shoulders and limit participation in play, sports, and leisure activities. Clinical and laboratory assessments of UL movement can be time-intensive, subjective, and/or require specialized equipment and may not optimally capture a child's motor abilities. The restrictions to in-person research experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic have inspired investigators to design inclusive at-home studies with child participants and their families. Relying on the ubiquity of mobile devices, mobile health (mHealth) applications offer solutions for various clinical and research problems. This scoping review article aimed to aggregate and synthesize existing research that used health …

Journal Articles: Oncology and Hematology

Redundant tumor microenvironment (TME) immunosuppressive mechanisms and epigenetic maintenance of terminal T cell exhaustion greatly hinder functional antitumor immune responses in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Bromodomain and extraterminal (BET) proteins regulate key pathways contributing to CLL pathogenesis and TME interactions, including T cell function and differentiation. Herein, we report that blocking BET protein function alleviates immunosuppressive networks in the CLL TME and repairs inherent CLL T cell defects. The pan-BET inhibitor OPN-51107 reduced exhaustion-associated cell signatures resulting in improved T cell proliferation and effector function in the Eμ-TCL1 splenic TME. Following BET inhibition (BET-i), TME T cells coexpressed significantly fewer …

Chemoreflex Sensitization Occurs In Both Male And Female Rats During Recovery From Acute Lung Injury, Kajal Kamra, Irving H. Zucker, Harold D. Schultz, Han-Jun Wang

Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology

Introduction: Sex-specific patterns in respiratory conditions, such as asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, obstructive sleep apnea, and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, have been previously documented. Animal models of acute lung injury (ALI) have offered insights into sex differences, with male mice exhibiting distinct lung edema and vascular leakage compared to female mice. Our lab has provided evidence that the chemoreflex is sensitized in male rats during the recovery from bleomycin-induced ALI, but whether sex-based chemoreflex changes occur post-ALI is not known. To bridge this gap, the current study employed the bleomycin-induced ALI animal model to investigate sex-based differences in chemoreflex activation during …

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

BACKGROUND: Transgenic (Tg) mice are widely used in biomedical research, and they are typically generated by injecting transgenic DNA cassettes into pronuclei of one-cell stage zygotes. Such animals often show unreliable expression of the transgenic DNA, one of the major reasons for which is random insertion of the transgenes. We previously developed a method called "pronuclear injection-based targeted transgenesis" (PITT), in which DNA constructs are directed to insert at pre-designated genomic loci. PITT was achieved by pre-installing so called landing pad sequences (such as heterotypic LoxP sites or attP sites) to create seed mice and then injecting Cre recombinase or …

Interpreting Religious Doctrine: The Third Rail That Wags The Dog In Religion Clause Jurisprudence, Samuel J. Levine Jan 2024

Interpreting Religious Doctrine: The Third Rail That Wags The Dog In Religion Clause Jurisprudence, Samuel J. Levine

Scholarly Works

This Article is part of a broader project exploring and assessing the United States Supreme Court’s hands-off approach to interpreting religious doctrine. The mixed metaphor that constitutes the title of this Article incorporates various aspects of the project’s interrelated themes and claims. First, as a descriptive matter, the Supreme Court has repeatedly and increasingly refused to adjudicate issues that require the interpretation, evaluation, and resolution of substantive areas of religious practice and belief. Thus, like the third rail of train tracks, interpreting religious doctrine is deemed off-limits and better left untouched. Indeed, the Court’s justifications for the hands-off approach rely …
