Motivating Math Students Through Socratic Pedagogy, Leslie Berg Jan 2024

Motivating Math Students Through Socratic Pedagogy, Leslie Berg

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

This study investigated the impact of implementing the Socratic method in teaching logarithms on the motivation levels of high school Algebra 2 students. Drawing on foundational research by Hirsch and Pfeil (2012), the research involves two classes totaling 28 students, with surveys administered before and after the Socratic lessons to gauge motivation, engagement, and participation levels. The meticulously designed four-day lesson plans employ cooperative dialogue and critical inquiry to foster student understanding of logarithmic concepts. With the teacher serving as a facilitator and students actively participating in the learning process, the study aimed to replicate and build upon previous findings, …

Effectiveness Of An Evolution-Based Serious Game On Motivation And Achievement Of Secondary-Level Science Students, Bradford John Fruechte Jan 2024

Effectiveness Of An Evolution-Based Serious Game On Motivation And Achievement Of Secondary-Level Science Students, Bradford John Fruechte

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Getting students to engage with schoolwork is not always an easy task. Lessons that have elements of games (gamified lessons) and serious games (those created for education) have the potential to increase motivation, which may also improve learning outcomes. But research has found mixed results on the achievement effects of educational games, and not enough research has shown the effectiveness of educational games on evolution-related topics specifically (Bjoerner & Hansen, 2010). This study aimed to implement a game that revolves around the mechanisms of evolution and evaluated that game’s effects on secondary-level students’ motivation and learning. Four middle school life …

Where And When The Antelope Play: Drivers Of Pronghorn Distribution And Demography Across Space And Through Time, Molly Cutler Mcdevitt Jan 2024

Where And When The Antelope Play: Drivers Of Pronghorn Distribution And Demography Across Space And Through Time, Molly Cutler Mcdevitt

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In this dissertation, I aim to (i) advance the understanding of pronghorn ecology and population responses to environmental variability, and (ii) test analytical tools linking environmental habitat factors to demographic processes. In doing so, I answer the following questions: How should we expect pronghorn demographic rates to vary from year to year? How do environmental conditions influence pronghorn survival? How do long-term impacts from environmental conditions directly affect pronghorn demographic trends like survival or abundance? Do environmental conditions influence pronghorn density and distribution in the same way? If not, how do they differ? Finally, in an increasingly changing landscape, what …

Rangeland Soil Seed Bank Dynamics: Soil Property Relationships, Patterns Across A Degradation Gradient, And Responses To Shrub Management, Ryan Willis Richard Schroeder

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Rangeland ecosystems are globally important for their ecosystem service delivery, however, they are experiencing several threats pushing systems across ecological states. Thus, creative science-based management is imperative to maintain ecosystem sustainability and improve ecosystem service delivery. Soil seed banks – the living seeds in the soil profile and on the soil surface – and their soil-seed-plant interactions are one area of inquiry that could help guide science-based management efforts when it comes to rangeland community assembly and ecological restoration.

In this dissertation, I investigated rangeland soil-seed-plant interactions in New Mexico, USA. In Chapter 1, I worked with an expert group …

Culture & Contamination On The Fort Hall Indian Reservation, Sidney Upsis Fellows Jan 2024

Culture & Contamination On The Fort Hall Indian Reservation, Sidney Upsis Fellows

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The land-based culture of our Shoshone-Bannock Tribes reflects our ability to live a healthy and good life by connecting to the land physically and spiritually in ways of respect, accountability, and other traditions that uphold land-human relations. In consideration of the settler colonialism that has spread across Turtle Island (a.k.a., North America) over the past 500 years, appropriation and contamination of land puts land-based cultures at stake. For the Shoshone-Bannock, two Superfund sites, a result and ongoing issue of settler colonialism, present an issue of environmental justice for the Tribes. This thesis seeks to provide a holistic understanding of our …

Sustainability Starts Small: Initiatives From Cuba To The Bitterroot Valley, Kathryn Marie Simecek Jan 2024

Sustainability Starts Small: Initiatives From Cuba To The Bitterroot Valley, Kathryn Marie Simecek

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Sustainability and sustainable business practices look different across every resource and industry.

From recreational scuba diving to grassroots recycling efforts, sustainability is driven by local communities with a vested interest in protecting their environments long-term. Access to these sustainability efforts and awareness about their existence are barriers that require intentional participation in sustainable resource use from relevant parties. In this professional paper, sustainability efforts will be examined across three domains. Food-grade glass is one of the easiest and most efficient items to recycle, but relatively little of it is recycled. Discarded glass can take various paths, from community-led recycling events …

Analysis Of The Transformations Of Laguna Melincué Wetland, Argentina, Bianca Giunti Jan 2024

Analysis Of The Transformations Of Laguna Melincué Wetland, Argentina, Bianca Giunti

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In Argentina, freshwater wetlands are threatened by land use changes, unsustainable irrigation practices, and climate change. Twenty-three wetlands cover 5,176,578 ha of the Argentinian territory and have been designated as wetlands of international importance by the Convention of Wetlands (Kandus et al., 2008; Ramsar Sites Information Service, 2022). These figures are significant given Argentina’s unique geographic location on a central migratory bird flyway and the profound biological diversity found in these wetlands (Jahn et al., 2013; Red Aves Internacionales, 2015). The Government of Argentina has recently moved to implement wetland protection and conservation policies. Nevertheless, policy and governance efforts to …

A Better Way To Make Protein, James Gillette Bosco Jan 2024

A Better Way To Make Protein, James Gillette Bosco

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Producing recombinant proteins stands as a cornerstone in both biotechnology and pharmaceutical research, supporting the creation of therapeutics, vaccines, and enzymes used in various industries. Bacterial systems for expression, especially Escherichia coli, are preferred due to their rapid growth rates, ease of genetic manipulation, and scalability. However, generating proteins under current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards introduces substantial challenges, such as issues with scalability, toxicity, protein misfolding, and strict regulatory demands. This section delivers an in-depth review of these obstacles and current methods developed to address them. An extensive exploration is conducted into induction techniques, including auto-induction and isopropyl-D-1-thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG) …

Comparative Morphology And Ultrastructure Of Olfactory Epithelia In Plethodontid Salamanders: Effect Of Life History Variation, Emily Gremling Jan 2024

Comparative Morphology And Ultrastructure Of Olfactory Epithelia In Plethodontid Salamanders: Effect Of Life History Variation, Emily Gremling

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

Many amphibian species rely on olfaction for locating prey and for social interactions during different life stages. Despite the importance of the olfactory system, research on its structure has been taxonomically limited. The most diverse family of salamanders, the Plethodontidae, has been largely excluded from research efforts to describe olfactory morphology. Although several histological studies have been conducted, no studies have yet looked at morphology at the level of ultrastructure using electron microscopy. The primary goal of my research was to examine olfactory morphology and ultrastructure in plethodontid species with a range of life history strategies, to better understand the …

Fire Severity Mediates Marten And Fisher Occurrence: Impacts Of The Dixie Fire On A Carnivore Community, Christopher James Collier Jan 2024

Fire Severity Mediates Marten And Fisher Occurrence: Impacts Of The Dixie Fire On A Carnivore Community, Christopher James Collier

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

The consumption of an astounding one million acres resulted from California’s largest single fire to date, the 2021 Dixie Fire. The social and economic losses associated with the fire were immediately apparent, but the effects on wildlife remained unknown. While previous research has suggested mixed or low severity fire may be beneficial to certain wildlife species, the responses to megafires are poorly understood for many carnivores. To better understand these responses to severe fire, I used a random sampling design stratified by burn severity to survey in and around the Dixie Fire footprint using baited camera stations. This allowed me …

Cultivating Attentiveness To Law In India Through Legal Anthropology, Deepa Das Acevedo, Jahnavi Chamarthi Jan 2024

Cultivating Attentiveness To Law In India Through Legal Anthropology, Deepa Das Acevedo, Jahnavi Chamarthi

Socio-Legal Review

This Article reviews and analyses scholarship at the intersection of anthropology and law. The first half of the Article provides context for understanding the boundaries, animating concerns, and tensions that have characterised the anthropology of law as an area of interdisciplinary inquiry. We focus especially on the subdiscipline’s Anglo-American history and show how a promising early period of engagement dissipated as both anthropologists and legal scholars lost enthusiasm for each others’ insights and methods. Then, we expand our analysis outward. Because legal anthropology belongs within, and is increasingly attentive to, the broader field of law and society scholarship, we explore …

Poldarking The Past: Contested Heritage, Tourism And Identity In Post-Mining Cornwall, Alexander Rowe Jan 2024

Poldarking The Past: Contested Heritage, Tourism And Identity In Post-Mining Cornwall, Alexander Rowe

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis aimed to examine representations of Cornish identity and Poldark at heritage sites in Cornwall and how the local communities responded to these fictionalised representations. This thesis adopted an interpretivist qualitative approach. In total, 37 semi-structured interviews were conducted with local residents, heritage professionals and other associated tourism stakeholders. A further 21 online interviews were conducted with tourists. These interviews were triangulated with a range of documentary sources. Data collected from the interviews and documentary sources were analysed using a thematic analysis framework. An original contribution of the thesis was the conceptualisation of ‘imaginative heritage dissonance’ which combines the notions …

This dissertation investigates the transformative potential of Community Land Trusts (CLTs) in reimagining land and homeownership within the context of capitalist real estate markets. Utilizing a qualitative research framework that combines narrative inquiry with Emergent Strategy and Community Cultural Wealth theories, this study explores the intricacies of developing CLTs as a counter-narrative to traditional models of property ownership. Through extensive narrative analysis of four distinct CLTs in California, this research highlights the complex challenges and innovative strategies employed to scale CLTs in competitive urban markets. The findings reveal how CLTs leverage emergent strategy and community cultural wealth to navigate and …

Exploring The Relative Contribution Of Humans On Genetic Differentiation Among Speyeria Callippe Populations In The California Coast Ranges, Laura K. Heller Jan 2024

Exploring The Relative Contribution Of Humans On Genetic Differentiation Among Speyeria Callippe Populations In The California Coast Ranges, Laura K. Heller

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The distinction between populations due to environmental factors like climate and geography are well-known and expected, therefore it is not illogical to believe more disjunct habitats would also impact genetic structure. Through Restriction Site Associated DNA Sequencing (RADseq) and Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis the genetic structure and differentiation (fixation index, Fst) of Speyeria callippe across four regions in California: the North Coast Ranges, Bay Area, Diablo Range, and South Coast Ranges were analyzed. The influence of geographic distance, human population density, and forest cover were explored as factors influencing the genetics of these populations. The combination of mtDNA and RADseq …

Effects Of Glyphosate-Based Herbicide Exposure On Life History, Stress Tolerance, And Microbiome—From Plasticity To Evolution, Jacob R. Whitlock Jan 2024

Effects Of Glyphosate-Based Herbicide Exposure On Life History, Stress Tolerance, And Microbiome—From Plasticity To Evolution, Jacob R. Whitlock

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Glyphosate (GLY) is the most used pesticide worldwide, and GLY-based herbicides (GBHs) can affect animals’ microbiomes and, in turn, their physiology and morphology. Environmental stressors can be mitigated by flexibility in life-history strategies, which can also dictate animal physiology and morphology. However, we lack an understanding of how GBH influences life-history strategies and stress tolerance, in addition to its effects across generations. Thus, I exposed the variable field cricket, Gryllus lineaticeps, to GBH within- and across-generations to examine the role of GBH in developmental plasticity and evolution. Specifically, I measured its effects on life-history traits (e.g., developmental duration and a …

Effects Of Fetal Bovine Serum On The Proteome And Secretome Of Pichia Pastoris, Kenneth L. Nguyen Jan 2024

Effects Of Fetal Bovine Serum On The Proteome And Secretome Of Pichia Pastoris, Kenneth L. Nguyen

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Komagataella pastoris, formerly known as Pichia pastoris, and hereafter referred to as Pichia, is a methylotrophic yeast widely employed as a recombinant protein factory for biotechnical and industrial purposes. P. pastoris boasts the ability to thrive at high cell densities, executes numerous post-translational modifications, and exhibits minimal secretion of endogenous proteins, thus greatly facilitating the expression and purification of recombinant proteins. Despite these advantages, Pichia still presents certain challenges as an expression system. Occasionally, recombinant proteins are retained within the cell and subject to degradation. Furthermore, Pichia falls short in matching the production capabilities of more widely used systems like …

The Role Of The Unfolded Protein Response In Fatty Liver Disease, Anusha L. Murshed Jan 2024

The Role Of The Unfolded Protein Response In Fatty Liver Disease, Anusha L. Murshed

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The unfolded protein response (UPR) is composed of three highly conserved pathways (ATF6, IRE1, PERK). Cellular stressors induce protein misfolding and aggregation in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). This signaling pathway maintains protein homeostasis when there is stress in the ER. When the UPR is activated, the eukaryotic initiation factor 2 alpha (eIF2α) becomes phosphorylated, which inhibits global mRNA translation. If ER stress remains chronically unmitigated, the UPR induces apoptosis. GADD34 and CReP shift in expression when the UPR is activated and work as phosphatases and dephosphorylate eIF2α in a feedback loop, allowing protein synthesis to resume. Several human diseases, including …

Insight Into A Sexually Dimorphic Ostracod Crustacean By Mass Spectrometry And Microtomography, Cindy D. Davis Jan 2024

Insight Into A Sexually Dimorphic Ostracod Crustacean By Mass Spectrometry And Microtomography, Cindy D. Davis

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The importance of the central nervous system cannot be understated. An array ofmolecules associated with the brain regulate basic behaviors as well as sex specific behaviors. Describing the molecular background is not the only way that I can learn more of the central nervous system. Describing the anatomy of the central nervous system can be crucial in understanding what regions of the brain is particularly key to the animal. Euphilomedes carcharodonta is a small marine crustacean native to the subtidal zone of the California coast. This ostracod makes for a compelling candidate to explore these research interests as this organism …

Plasticity In Response To Temperature Magnitude And Variation---From Life History To Thermal Tolerance And Coloration, Austin Rex Hoffman Jan 2024

Plasticity In Response To Temperature Magnitude And Variation---From Life History To Thermal Tolerance And Coloration, Austin Rex Hoffman

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Warming associated with climate change has many direct and downstream effects on animals. For example, warmer developmental temperatures can improve heat tolerance and reduce insect melanization, which is related to coloration, thermoregulation, immunity, desiccation resistance, and potentially life-history traits, such as investment into reproduction and dispersal. Increased temperature variation is also a feature of climate change, and it may have a larger impact on animals than warming. However, I lack insight into the combined effects of temperature magnitude and variability on important traits of life history, thermal tolerance, and coloration. Thus, I integrated temperature variation into thermal performance using a …

Development Of Nano Formulations Of Lipophilic Platinum Complexes Against Lung Cancer, Zizhao Xu Jan 2024

Development Of Nano Formulations Of Lipophilic Platinum Complexes Against Lung Cancer, Zizhao Xu

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Lung cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide and urges the development of more effective and safer treatment options. Conventional platinum-based drugs like cisplatin, while effective, are associated with significant systemic toxicity, particularly nephrotoxicity. Nano formulations, such as liposomal and micellar delivery systems, represent a promising approach to enhance the anticancer activity and reduce the toxicity of platinum complexes.

This study develops and evaluates novel miriplatin-loaded nano formulations for lung cancer therapy. We prepared and screened various liposomal and micellar formulations of miriplatin by either thin-film hydration or co-solvent evaporation, which identified a number of formulations with appropriate sizes …
