Testosterone: The Forgotten Female Hormone, Katherine A. Horner Pa-C Mar 2025

Testosterone: The Forgotten Female Hormone, Katherine A. Horner Pa-C

Lynchburg Journal of Medical Science

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this article is to review the current and past use of testosterone as a replacement hormone for women in peri- and early postmenopause. Healthcare providers are often not educated about testosterone as a sex hormone with profound effects on the female body. Yet, clinicians who treat women in the 4th and 5th decades of life should be familiar with the function of testosterone, clinical symptoms associated with declining levels, women’s perceptions about peri- and postmenopause as well as side effects of testosterone, and the implications of its use as a replacement hormone on other body systems. …

New Drainage Records And Revised Ranges For Sympatric Pirate Perch Species In Alabama, Florida, And Georgia, Tyler Muller, Bryson Hilburn, Lily Hughes

Southeastern Fishes Council Proceedings

We report updated ranges for four sympatric species of Pirate Perches following a recent taxonomic revision of Aphredoderus. Using observations from recent sampling by the North Carolina State Museum of Natural Sciences and reidentifying cataloged specimens from the Georgia Museum of Natural History and Auburn University Museum collections, we were able to refine the distributions of four species throughout a complicated sympatric zone spanning coastal plain drainages in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia. We find that A. gibbosus is present in low numbers in the Flint, Escambia, Choctawhatchee, and Chattahoochee basins. These additional records nearly link the previously reported disjunct …

Publication Rates For Abstracts Presented At The Aapos Annual Meeting, Joshua Soo Bin Kim, Scott A. Larson, Tiffany San Fung, Heidi Israel, Oscar A. Cruz

Journal of Academic Ophthalmology

Background: American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus (AAPOS) annual meetings provide opportunities to present research abstracts to a sub-specialty audience. However, these abstracts may undergo less rigorous peer review and may be associated with risks of non-publication or publication bias. This study aims to evaluate and analyze publication rates and potential factors that contribute to non-publication. Methods: We examined all abstracts (paper, hardboard posters, and electronic posters) accepted for presentation (n=1093) at the AAPOS annual meetings between 2015 and 2019. A comprehensive search was conducted to quantify the abstracts that were published to a peer reviewed journal within three …

“Listen To Your Body First And Me Second,” Embodied Learning Readiness In Yoga Teacher Education, Janel Usry Mar 2025

“Listen To Your Body First And Me Second,” Embodied Learning Readiness In Yoga Teacher Education, Janel Usry

Educational Studies Dissertations

Embodied learning happens when thoughts and actions are informed by sensing and noticing inner bodily states. Yoga is commonly cited as a mind-body practice that enhances embodied learning, yet there is a gap in yoga teacher education literature pertaining to this competency. A qualitative phenomenological study was used to understand how embodied learning was exhibited amongst alumni of a residential yoga teacher training. Data was examined using interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to determine in what ways, if any, the yoga teacher training altered trainees’ relationships with their bodies. The findings showed a process of embodied learning readiness: students pursued yoga …

The Menagerie Of Berggasse 19: An Animal Studies Re-Reading Of Freud’S Classic Case Studies, Samuel Weeks, Beatrice Barjon Mar 2025

The Menagerie Of Berggasse 19: An Animal Studies Re-Reading Of Freud’S Classic Case Studies, Samuel Weeks, Beatrice Barjon

College of Humanities and Sciences Faculty Papers

This article explores Freud’s original engagement with animal symbols, characters, and stories in his case studies “Little Hans,” “The Rat Man,” and “The Wolf Man.” Employing insights from animal studies, the article examines Freud’s views on the human-animal continuum as well as the phenomena of anthropomorphism and zoomorphism, via which human characteristics are affixed to animals and animal characteristics to humans. Also examined is the symbolism surrounding the animals appearing in the fairy tales referenced by Freud’s patients, including “Little Red Riding Hood.” We end by considering the contributions that Freud can make to the expanding field of animal studies.

Characterizing The Effects Of Rage Upregulation In Lung Development, Derek Michael Clarke Mar 2025

Characterizing The Effects Of Rage Upregulation In Lung Development, Derek Michael Clarke

Theses and Dissertations

The Receptor for Advanced Glycation End-products (RAGE) is a transmembrane, multi-ligand cell surface receptor highly expressed in pulmonary tissue, where it plays a critical role in mediating inflammatory responses. Under chronic toxicant exposure, often associated with cigarette, e-cigarette, and diesel particulate, RAGE transitions from a protective to a deleterious state, contributing to pathological processes. In adult models, RAGE's role in the development of lung disease has been well studied, yet in the context of lung development RAGE has not been well studied with a small number of clinical papers finding increased levels of RAGE in bronchopulmonary dysplasia(BPD) and respiratory distress …

Faculty Research 2025

Cardiac amyloidosis is a secondary phenomenon of an already pre-existing chronic condition. Whether car- diac amyloidosis represents one of the complications post myocardial infarction (MI) has yet to be fully under- stood. Here, we show that amyloidosis occurs after MI and that amyloid fibers are composed of macrophage- derived serum amyloid A 3 (SAA3) monomers. SAA3 overproduction in macrophages is triggered by exosomal communication from cardiac stromal cells (CSCs), which, in response to MI, activate the expression of a platelet aggregation-inducing type I transmembrane glycoprotein, Podoplanin (PDPN). CSC PDPN+ -derived small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are enriched in SAA3, and exosomal …

Social Stories To Shape Impulsive Behaviors To Increase Self-Regulation In Preschoolers, Caroline Claire Hargrave Mar 2025

Social Stories To Shape Impulsive Behaviors To Increase Self-Regulation In Preschoolers, Caroline Claire Hargrave

LSU Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Students need to be able to self-regulate their behavior within the classroom, thus not interrupting instruction and keeping the classroom running smoothly. Self-regulation is a critical skill children need to succeed in multiple aspects of life. Poor self-regulation skills can lead to challenges academically as well as socially. Contrary to self-regulation is impulsivity, which surrounds not thinking before doing. Impulsivity is a common factor seen within the preschool setting, which surrounds multiple behavior variations deemed unsuitable for classroom learning. Previous research indicates that social stories can be implemented within the classroom to decrease inappropriate behaviors in preschoolers with …

Impact Of Glufosinate On Sugarcane Yield And Yield Components When Applied Post-Directed And Its Efficacy In Controlling Emerged Itchgrass (Rottboellia Cochinchinensis), Warner R. Simon Mar 2025

Impact Of Glufosinate On Sugarcane Yield And Yield Components When Applied Post-Directed And Its Efficacy In Controlling Emerged Itchgrass (Rottboellia Cochinchinensis), Warner R. Simon

LSU Master's Theses

Weed control is extremely important in the Louisiana sugarcane (Saccharum spp.) industry, as it is a perennial crop that grows back after each harvest. Fields are kept weed free using mechanical and chemical methods to prevent weed-crop competition and further establishment of weed populations. The weed itchgrass (Rottboellia cochinchinensis) has become problematic for Louisiana sugarcane producers. Sometimes, itchgrass can still emerge after farmers have made a pre-emergence (PRE) herbicide application. These weeds are usually controlled using the herbicide paraquat dichloride (paraquat) in post-emergence (POST) directed applications. In recent year, 2016-2024, the United States Environmental Protection Agency …

“Combined With Homelessness, It’S Just A Nightmare”: A Qualitative Study Exploring How People Experiencing Homelessness Perceive Mental Health And Mental Health Services, Simone Stedmon, Pete Keohane

School of Psychology

People experiencing chronic homelessness (PECH) have relatively poor mental health. Whilst trauma and psychologically informed services are becoming more commonplace and demonstrate positive outcomes, they are still underutilised by PECH. Furthermore, little is known about how PECH understand their own mental health. This qualitative study explores PECH’s perceptions of mental health, mental health services, and any perceived barriers or facilitators to access. Eleven PECH participated in semi-structured interviews. Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis was used to make sense of the transcripts, and five overarching group experiential themes were created: ‘Origins of Mental Health’, ‘Understanding of Mental Health Difficulties’, ‘Experiences of Help-Seeking and …

Prior to COVID-19, pandemic influenza viruses have emerged four times in the previous one hundred years. This includes “Spanish” influenza (H1N1) in 1918, “Asian” influenza (H2N2) in 1957, “Hong Kong” influenza (H3N2) in 1968, and H1N1 “swine” influenza in 2009 (Saunders-Hastings & Krewski, 2016; Taubenberger, 2005). In early May 2024, the first reported human case of avian flu (H5N1) that had also infected cows in the US appeared in the literature (Uyeki et al., 2024). In late August 2024, OSHA released a hazard alert providing information for dairy workers on avian influenza in dairy cattle, together with personal protective equipment …

Despite its significant heritability, the genetic basis of Parkinson's disease (PD) remains incompletely understood. Here, in analyzing whole-genome sequence data from 3,809 PD cases and 247,101 controls in the UK Biobank, we discover that protein-truncating variants in ITSN1 confer a substantially increased risk of PD (p = 6.1 × 10

Multicilia Dynamically Transduce Sonic Hedgehog Signaling To Regulate Choroid Plexus Functions, Suifang Mao, Michael J Holtzman, Et Al. Mar 2025

Multicilia Dynamically Transduce Sonic Hedgehog Signaling To Regulate Choroid Plexus Functions, Suifang Mao, Michael J Holtzman, Et Al.

2020-Current year OA Pubs

The choroid plexus is a major site for cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production, characterized by a multiciliated epithelial monolayer that regulates CSF production. We demonstrate that defective choroid plexus ciliogenesis or intraflagellar transport yields neonatal hydrocephalus, at least in part due to increased water channel Aqp1 and ion transporter Atp1a2 expression. We demonstrate choroid plexus multicilia as sensory cilia, transducing both canonical and non-canonical Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) signaling. Interestingly, it is the non-canonical Shh signaling that represses Aqp1 and Atp1a2 expression by the Smoothened (Smo)/Gαi/cyclic AMP (cAMP) pathway. Choroid plexus multicilia exhibit unique ciliary ultrastructure, carrying features of both primary and …

Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 1 (TREM-1) has been shown to amplify inflammatory signals, such as Toll-like receptor signaling, after infection and sterile injury. While previous studies have demonstrated that TREM-1 activation in circulating immune cells promotes injury, the role of TREM-1 signaling in tissue-resident cells in the context of sterile inflammation remains poorly understood. Here, we used a cardiac transplantation model to dissect how Trem1/3 expression on heart-resident cells regulates sterile inflammation. TREM-1 is expressed in heart-resident C-C chemokine receptor 2 (CCR2)

Alterity And Kinship: Co-Writing Posthumanist Speculative Nonfiction With Ai, Jeffrey Bardzell, Maliheh Ghajargar

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

As a response to the climate crisis, scholarly literature has introduced new theoretical perspectives, such as posthumanism, which seek to reimagine the relationships between humans and nonhuman others, including environments, animals, and plants. Reimagining these relationships depends in large part on our ability to engage nonhumans in their otherness, or alterity, but doing so is challenging. Responding to calls throughout posthuman literature for experimental new modes of imaginative encounter with nonhumans, and inspired by speculative traditions from literature to design, we devise a methodology involving “creative experiments” aimed at disrupting, decentering, and disorienting the human-centered thinking that interferes with humans’ …
