Porcine Peritoneal Macrophages Are Susceptible To Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Infection, Kassandra Durazo-Martinez, Jayeshbhai Chaudhari, Sushmita Kumari, Hiep Vu

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Previous studies have suggested that porcine peritoneal macrophages (PPMs) are resistant to PRRSV infection, whereas porcine alveolar macrophages (PAMs) are highly susceptible. This contrast is intriguing, as both cell types belong to the same monocyte/macrophage family. The current study aimed to investigate the host factors contributing to the differing susceptibility of PPMs and PAMs to PRRSV infection. We found that PPMs exhibit a higher frequency of CD14+ cells compared to PAMs, suggesting a more immature macrophage phenotype in PPMs. Importantly, PPMs expressed both CD163 and CD169, the key receptors for PRRSV entry, although the frequency and intensity of CD163 and …

Background: Non-alcoholic liver disease (NAFLD) may be associated with cardiovascular diseases; however, only a few studies have analyzed this relationship. We aimed to assess the epidemiologic data and the association between NAFLD and acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in the United States. Methods: The National Inpatient Sample (NIS) database 2016-2019 was queried using ICD10-CM diagnostic codes to identify hospitalizations of AMI + NAFLD. Essential demographic variables were analyzed to determine the disparities in the prevalence of AMI hospitalizations and deaths among NAFLD patients. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models determined the association between NAFLD and AMI hospitalizations and death. …

Inaba, Reimagined: An Analysis Of Persona 4’S Rural Setting In A Neoliberal Context, Stanley Reid

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Persona 4, through the use of nostalgia and the process of native-place making known as furusato-zukuri, creates a fictional rural space, using authentic Japanese imagery and cultural symbols to make Inaba a 21st-century furusato. In doing so, Persona 4 critiques city life in a neoliberal society, which causes a growing disillusionment with urban living due to a constant state of unrest. Furthermore, through its use of nostalgic imagery which normally emphasizes gender norms in the Japanese culture, Persona 4 flips this idea on its head by showcasing powerful female leads, who, despite living in a space normally …

When Is Teasing Abuse? A Grounded Theory Of Teasing Among Mexican American Adolescent Dating Couples, Heidi Adams Rueda, Lela Rankin, Kim Peace-Tuskey Nov 2024

When Is Teasing Abuse? A Grounded Theory Of Teasing Among Mexican American Adolescent Dating Couples, Heidi Adams Rueda, Lela Rankin, Kim Peace-Tuskey

Social Work Faculty Publications

This study examined the use of teasing during observed videotaped interactions of Mexican American adolescent dating couples (N = 34; 15–17 years old) from an urban area of the Southwest United States. During the interaction task, couples discussed two relationship problems for 14 min and nearly all interactions (88.2%) contained teasing. In turn, we developed a grounded theory of teasing that delineated who initiated the teasing (boys/girls), teasing types, levels of severity of teasing incidents, youth’s motivations for teasing, and the resulting consequences of teasing in real time. We found that most teasing incidents were mild to moderately severe …

Prior Probability Biases Perceptual Choices By Modulating The Accumulation Rate, Rather Than The Baseline, Of Decision Evidence, Jessica A. Diaz, M. Andrea Pisauro, Ioannis Delis, Marios G. Philiastides Nov 2024

Prior Probability Biases Perceptual Choices By Modulating The Accumulation Rate, Rather Than The Baseline, Of Decision Evidence, Jessica A. Diaz, M. Andrea Pisauro, Ioannis Delis, Marios G. Philiastides

School of Psychology

The prior probability of an upcoming stimulus has been shown to influence the formation of perceptual decisions. Computationally, these effects have typically been attributed to changes in the starting point (i.e., baseline) of evidence accumulation in sequential sampling models. More recently, it has also been proposed that prior probability might additionally lead to changes in the rate of evidence accumulation. Here, we introduce a neurally-informed behavioural modelling approach to understand whether prior probability influences the starting point, the rate of evidence accumulation or both. To this end, we employ a well-established visual object categorisation task for which two neural components …

Between Copyright And Computer Science: The Law And Ethics Of Generative Ai, Devin R. Desai, Mark Riedl

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

Copyright and computer science continue to intersect and clash, but they can coexist. The advent of new technologies such as digitization of visual and aural creations, sharing technologies, search engines, social media offerings, and more, challenge copyright-based industries and reopen questions about the reach of copyright law. Breakthroughs in artificial intelligence research, especially Large Language Models that leverage copyrighted material as part of training, are the latest examples of the ongoing tension between copyright and computer science. The exuberance, rush-to-market, and edge problem cases created by a few misguided companies now raises challenges to core legal doctrines and may shift …

Reconstitution Of Arp2/3-Nucleated Actin Assembly With Proteins Cp, V-1, And Carmil, Olivia L Mooren, Patrick Mcconnell, James D Debrecht, Anshuman Jaysingh, John A Cooper Nov 2024

Reconstitution Of Arp2/3-Nucleated Actin Assembly With Proteins Cp, V-1, And Carmil, Olivia L Mooren, Patrick Mcconnell, James D Debrecht, Anshuman Jaysingh, John A Cooper

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Actin polymerization is often associated with membrane proteins containing capping-protein-interacting (CPI) motifs, such as capping protein, Arp2/3, myosin I linker (CARMIL), CD2AP, and WASHCAP/Fam21. CPI motifs bind directly to actin-capping protein (CP), and this interaction weakens the binding of CP to barbed ends of actin filaments, lessening the ability of CP to functionally cap those ends. The protein V-1/myotrophin binds to the F-actin-binding site on CP and sterically blocks CP from binding barbed ends. CPI-motif proteins also weaken the binding between V-1 and CP, which decreases the inhibitory effects of V-1, thereby freeing CP to cap barbed ends. Here, we …

Immersion And Understanding: Towards A Personal Theory Of Literature And Culture, Jonathan Len Vowell Nov 2024

Immersion And Understanding: Towards A Personal Theory Of Literature And Culture, Jonathan Len Vowell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

A certain critical consensus has been growing through the late 20th and early 21st centuries that ‘critique’—the general model of and approach for academic analysis for literary and cultural studies in Western universities and academics—has ‘run out of steam’. Its postures of suspicion and negation, its various methods of interrogation and unmasking, and its general orientation towards deconstruction and subversion (as opposed to construction and position), has hit a wall on its returns politically, intellectually, and ethically. Consequently, a crisis in the humanities has emerged (or reemerged) wherein the need has returned to justify what it is exactly that the …

Calcium (Ca2+) ions are ubiquitous and indispensable signaling messengers that regulate virtually every cell function. The unique ability of Ca2+ to regulate so many different processes yet cause stimulus specific changes in cell function requires sensing and decoding of Ca2+ signals. Ca2+-sensing proteins, such as calmodulin, decode Ca2+ signals by binding and modifying the function of a diverse range of effector proteins. These effectors include the Ca2+-calmodulin dependent protein kinase kinase-2 (CaMKK2) enzyme, which is the core component of a signaling cascade that plays a key role in important physiological and pathophysiological processes, including brain function and cancer. In addition …

Monsters, Multiplicities, And Liminal Experiences In Doctoral Education: Fabulation As Research Methodology, Anna V. Gonzalez Nov 2024

Monsters, Multiplicities, And Liminal Experiences In Doctoral Education: Fabulation As Research Methodology, Anna V. Gonzalez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to experiment with qualitative research methodologies while exploring the complexities of doctoral education, research practices, philosophies of inquiry, and other topics intersecting with(in) educational scholarship. My vision for this work was fueled by postmodernist critiques of humanist education, frustrations with the methodological status quo pervasive in educational research, and deep concerns about the unsustainability of performance-focused teaching and learning.

The logic I follow in this project is simple: if we—researchers and academics—are to contribute solutions for challenges and ongoing crises in our world, then we must start thinking relationally and in ways more complex …

Seasonal And Interannual Abundance, Distribution, And Carbon Production Estimates In The Northeastern Gulf Of Mexico Using The Sipper Camera Imaging System, Carlyn Scott

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Larvaceans are filter-feeding gelatinous zooplankton whose contributions to marine biogeochemical processes are poorly constrained. By frequently shedding their particle-rich houses and producing dense fecal pellets, larvaceans contribute large amounts of particulate organic matter to deeper waters and to the sea floor. Despite their importance, little is known about larvacean abundance, distribution, and carbon production in the highly productive northeastern Gulf of Mexico (NEGOM). To address this gap in knowledge, we collected images of larvaceans at discrete depths in the upper 300 m of the water column between August 2010 –2014 using the Shadowed Image Particle Profiling and Evaluation Recorder (SIPPER) …

Water In The Middle East. A Geographyof Peace By A. Amery And Arron T. Wolf (Eds.)., C. Nicholas Raphael

The Geographical Bulletin

Despite the image that "it is all the same" the Middle East is a paradox in context and poorly understood. Oil rich and the center of three monotheistic religions in the Middle East contrast with political disarray and the availability of resources such as water. The arid empty 61 spaces contrast with the urbanization occurring throughout the region

Principles Of Glacial Geomorphology And Geology By I. Peter Martini, Michael E. Brookfield, And Steven Sadura., C. Nicholas Raphael

The Geographical Bulletin

"Principles of Glacial Geomorphology and Geology" is different from most glacier-related textbooks. The principal difference between this text and most others is the wider range of topics covered. As in most glacial texts, the book covers glaciology and glacial sediments and landforms. Close to half of this text, however, covers permafrost and periglacial processes, dating techniques, isostasy/eustasy, migration of biota dur - ing glacial cycles, and an extensive global history of glaciation. As a result, the most positive aspect of the book is that one can design a class, using one book, that covers almost any glacier-related topic. The negative …

Comic books in their current form have been a staple of American pop culture for nearly a century. The combination of art and narrative provides a unique storytelling medium that has evolved with each new batch of artists and authors over the decades. The imagination's impossible and fantastical qualities are actualized in ways that non-visual literature cannot compete with, reaching audiences of all ages and reading comprehension. However, like with all fiction, the influence of reality cannot be denied. Despite the colorful costumes and progressive storylines, comic book stories suffer from a long-standing misogynistic motive that has long plagued literature. …

Introduction:

Soybean is an important protein and oil crop, and improving yield has traditionally been a major breeding goal. However, salt stress is an important abiotic factor that can severely impair soybean yield by disrupting metabolic processes, inhibiting photosynthesis, and hindering plant growth, ultimately leading to a decrease in productivity.

Methods:

This study utilized phenotypic and genotypic data from 563 soybean germplasms sourced from over 20 countries. Employing four distinct models—we performed a genome-wide association study (GWAS) using four models, including MLM, MLMM, FarmCPU, and BLINK in GAPIT 3, we conducted a Genome-Wide Association Study (GWAS) to identify single nucleotide …

Are College Students' Grocery Shopping Habits Consistent With The Mediterranean Diet Guidelines? A Preliminary Report, Montana Grace Ayala Nov 2024

Are College Students' Grocery Shopping Habits Consistent With The Mediterranean Diet Guidelines? A Preliminary Report, Montana Grace Ayala

Master's Theses

The number of people diagnosed with cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity, and diabetes mellitus continues to grow. The Mediterranean diet has been shown to reduce the risks of developing heart disease. Fruit and vegetable consumption is low across the country. Improving fruit and vegetable consumption for adults might start with improving intake earlier in life because it can influence better food habits. Following the Mediterranean diet at a young age can prevent chronic diseases from developing. It is well known that college students have diets that are not consistent with healthy eating habits and can be influenced by the need for …

How Helpless Are You? The Need For Closure And The Need For Cognitive Preferences As A Moderating Effect In The Relationship Between Perceived Self-Efficacy And Learned Helplessness, Aungelique Renea Sledge Nov 2024

How Helpless Are You? The Need For Closure And The Need For Cognitive Preferences As A Moderating Effect In The Relationship Between Perceived Self-Efficacy And Learned Helplessness, Aungelique Renea Sledge

Doctoral Dissertations

A substantial amount of research has been shown that the impact of self-efficacy has shown positive and negative effects. Additionally, the need for closure defined as an individual's motivational degree to reach firm answers, as opposed to ambiguity has also been shown to have diverse effects for individuals when their closure needs are threatened or unobtained. Research has posited that to successfully obtain and/or avoid reaching closure in various situations, an individual must be able to process information in a way that is quick, heuristic, and stereotypical (e.g., cognitive structuring) or in a way that is much slower, effortful, and …

Pink1-Deficiency Facilitates Mitochondrial Iron Accumulation And Colon Tumorigenesis, Mariella Arcos, Lavanya Goodla, Hyeoncheol Kim, Sharina P. Desai, Rui Liu, Kunlun Yin, Zhaoli Liu, David R. Martin, Xiang Xue

Pathology Research and Scholarship

Mitophagy, the process by which cells eliminate damaged mitochondria, is mediated by PINK1 (PTEN induced kinase 1). Our recent research indicates that PINK1 functions as a tumor suppressor in colorectal cancer by regulating cellular metabolism. Interestingly, PINK1 ablation activated the NLRP3 (NLR family pyrin domain containing 3) inflammasome, releasing IL1B (interleukin 1 beta). However, inhibiting the NLRP3-IL1B signaling pathway with an IL1R (interleukin 1 receptor) antagonist or NLRP3 inhibitor did not hinder colon tumor growth after PINK1 loss. To identify druggable targets in PINK1-deficient tumors, ribonucleic acid sequencing analysis was performed on colon tumors from pink1 knockout and wild-type mice. …

Recreational Fishers’ Attitudes To Fisheries Management And Compliance, Karina L. Ryan, Clinton Syers, Kane Holtom, Timothy J. Green, Jeremy M. Lyle, Kate E. Stark, Sean R. Tracey

Fisheries Research Articles

Recreational fisheries policy decisions have social and ecological outcomes that depend on whether regulations are understood and meet expectations, which in turn enhances compliance. This study investigates perceptions of management and compliance among boat-based recreational fishers in Western Australia with consideration of demography (age, residence) and fishing behaviour (avidity, bioregion fished). Most respondents considered themselves to be informed about rules governing their fishing and there was strong support for current input and output controls, including area and seasonal closures and possession and size limits. There was less support for alternative regulations that are not currently in practice, such as annual …

Nusap4 Regulates Chromosome Segregation In Trypanosoma Brucei By Promoting Bipolar Spindle Assembly, Qing Zhou, Ziyin Li

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Faithful chromosome segregation in eukaryotes requires the assembly of a bipolar spindle and the faithful attachment of kinetochores to spindle microtubules, which are regulated by various spindle-associated proteins (SAPs) that play distinct functions in regulating spindle dynamics and microtubule-kinetochore attachment. The protozoan parasite Trypanosoma brucei employs evolutionarily conserved and kinetoplastid-specific proteins, including some kinetoplastid-specific nucleus- and spindle-associated proteins (NuSAPs), to regulate chromosome segregation. Here, we characterized NuSAP4 and its functional interplay with diverse SAPs in promoting chromosome segregation in T. brucei. NuSAP4 associates with the spindle during mitosis and concentrates at spindle poles where it interacts with SPB1 and MAP103. …

Research Verification Is Effective For Extension Programs In Aquaculture, Luke A. Roy, Anita M. Kelly, Terry R. Hanson, Larry Dorman, Matthew Recsetar, Herbert Quintero

Journal of Extension

Extension professionals have used research verification programs to evaluate the effectiveness of research-based management recommendations in several different aquaculture species. In addition to providing a platform on which to examine current best management practices and Extension recommendations from Land Grant Universities, research verification is valuable in identifying gaps for further research. Perhaps the best benefit of research verification programs are the comradery and relationships developed between cooperating commercial producers and Extension personnel that can lay the groundwork to facilitate future collaborative efforts related to technology transfer in the aquaculture industry.
