Assessing The Influence Of 4-H Participation On The Development Of Workforce Readiness Skills, Jodi L. Smith, Jamie Mullins, Lisa Ingram, Brenda Pruett, Allison Nichols, Carole Scheerbaum, Lorrie Wright, Amanda Johnson
Journal of Extension
We examined the impact of 4-H participation on workforce readiness skill development, including personal, work, communication, and problem solving/decision-making. The study examined two levels of 4-H activities: county-level and state-level. The online survey instrument contained questions about demographics, skill development and 4-H participation. Respondents indicated participation in county-level activities was positively related to the development of the four workforce skills; however, participation in state-level activities was significantly related to the development of work skills. Problem solving/decision-making skills was least associated to county or state-level participation. We recommend Extension professionals intentionally incorporate workforce readiness skills into all 4-H activities.

Journal of Academic Ophthalmology
Purpose
To assess how resident and attending ophthalmologists perceive and evaluate ethically controversial scenarios regarding mentorship, authorship, and ethics compliance that may occur during research involving residents.
Methods
An online survey was developed and contained 14 controversial vignettes based on common research scenarios that can occur when conducting research with trainees. The scenarios were designed to capture issues regarding three themes: mentorship, authorship, and compliance with ethical guidelines. Resident and attending ophthalmologists at eight military and civilian academic residency programs in the United States were invited to participate. Respondents used a Likert scale to assess the ethicality of the situations …
The Concept Of Wilderness In Western Culture And Its Sacredness, Shannon Doyal
The Concept Of Wilderness In Western Culture And Its Sacredness, Shannon Doyal
Runkle Woods Symposia
Shannon Doyal, a Professional Writing student at Wright State, explores how wilderness has been perceived throughout American history—as both a physical space and a powerful spiritual symbol. Drawing from Indigenous perspectives, early settler narratives, Transcendentalist writings, and American literature, she traces the evolving cultural and emotional significance of wilderness. From a place of fear and survival to one of introspection and sacred connection, wilderness reflects our changing relationship with nature and ourselves. As someone whose spirituality honors the cycles of nature, Doyal argues that reclaiming wilderness as a sacred and emotional space is vital—not only for environmental preservation but also …
Endangered Bats In The Runkle Woods, Volker Bahn
Endangered Bats In The Runkle Woods, Volker Bahn
Runkle Woods Symposia
Since 2019, Dr. Volker Bahn’s lab has been monitoring bat populations in the Runkle Woods and nearby sites, using acoustic detectors to track species presence and activity over time. With bats representing about 20% of all mammal species globally, their ecological role—particularly in insect control—is vital. The presentation highlights the diversity of local bat species, with 10 of Ohio's 11 expected species documented, ranging from the abundant big brown and red bats to the federally endangered Indiana and northern long-eared bats. Dr. Bahn discusses patterns in bat activity across years, potential drivers such as precipitation, and the concerning declines in …

This project addresses the growing issue of salt pollution in Wright State Woods, with a specific focus on sodium chloride runoff from deicing agents. Elevated salt levels, stemming from university parking lots and surrounding infrastructure, have been linked to soil degradation, vegetation stress, and aquatic habitat damage. By analyzing salt flow patterns and assessing ecological impacts, including EPA-reported chloride violations, the team identified critical areas of concern such as Outfall #2. Proposed mitigation strategies include the use of salt-tolerant tree species, alternative deicers (e.g., acetate- or carbohydrate-based), physical barriers, and expanded retention ponds and filter dams.

Up In Smoke: Indigenous Techniques To Combat Climate Change And Increase Biodiversity, Brad Kerry
Up In Smoke: Indigenous Techniques To Combat Climate Change And Increase Biodiversity, Brad Kerry
Runkle Woods Symposia
Brad Kerry explores how Indigenous land management practices—particularly the use of prescribed fire—can be reintroduced to restore the Runkle Woods to its pre-colonial ecological state. Drawing on archaeological evidence, historical tree surveys, and ecological data, the presentation highlights how periodic, low-intensity fires historically maintained the forest’s biodiversity, promoted fire-adapted species like oak and hickory, and suppressed invasive plants. Kerry advocates for carefully planned, small-scale burns to combat "mesophication"—a shift toward shade-tolerant, fire-averse species—while increasing forest resilience to drought, invasive species, and climate change. The presentation underscores the ecological benefits of fire and outlines practical considerations for reintroducing controlled burns as …

Reconceiving Corporate Rights And Regulation In The Ai Era, Michael R. Siebecker
Reconceiving Corporate Rights And Regulation In The Ai Era, Michael R. Siebecker
Sturm College of Law: Faculty Scholarship
Can existing corporate governance principles properly guide the relationship between shareholders and directors as artificial intelligence (“AI”) plays an increasingly prominent role in corporate management, planning, and operations? Without a doubt, AI technologies allow corporations to enjoy enhanced efficiency and innovation. But the vast range of AI capabilities—from sophisticated data analytics to autonomous decision-making—raises profound questions about whether traditional governance principles remain sufficiently robust to cabin the proper development and deployment of such a powerful and rapidly evolving set of new technologies. Current corporate governance structures that focus on human actors and traditional business decision-making mechanisms seem ill-suited to address …

For many, symptom resolution occurs relatively quickly after traumatic brain injury (TBI), however some people experience symptoms that can last for months and even years. Apathy is a symptom that can cause disruption after TBI. While cannabis has been suggested to treat several symptoms and conditions related to TBI, given the historical association with apathy, investigation of the relationship is imperative. There is little research in the medical population, with even less in specific clinical samples - this study aims to bridge this gap. 52 participants with symptoms lasting at least 6 months were compared based on the use of …

The Role Of Creation On Mediating Grace For The Purpose Of Spiritual Formation, Pam H. Zolczer
Doctor of Ministry Projects and Theses
During a very difficult time in my life I found emotional and spiritual healing during time spent immersed in creation. My guide on this journey, other than the human companions who were concerned for me during my loss, has been a horse. While I thought I was learning to care for and ride a horse, I learned something much more significant: I learned how to give my pain away and I rushed breathlessly into a new phase of my love for God. I also rushed into a new vocation. And all of this is because I ride Cooper.[1] This …
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder In Secondary Instrumental Music Ensembles: A Qualitative Intrapersonal Inquiry, Christopher Sakowski
Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder In Secondary Instrumental Music Ensembles: A Qualitative Intrapersonal Inquiry, Christopher Sakowski
Dissertations
Executive function is deficient in individuals with ADHD. Playing a musical instrument has been shown to improve executive functions. This study examined if participants with ADHD perceived a connection between playing an instrument in a music ensemble and improved executive functioning, as well as improved ADHD presentations. The research design used for this study was a basic qualitative design, focusing on phenomenological intrapersonal inquiry. Data collection was done entirely through 60-120 minute semi-structured interviews with both music educators and non-music school personnel that participated in instrumental music ensembles as young students. Interviews were recorded using Zoom, transcribed using Microsoft Office …

My work comes from imaginative inspiration as well as a personal nostalgia. This visual influence on my work comes primarily from Japanese animation as well as my memories of the visual culture of my youth—I filter these touchpoints through current trends to inspire new work. The vast majority of my art involves drawing with graphite and/or charcoal. My art making reflects critical thinking about my experiences by trying to portray a breadth of emotion in the confined two-dimensional space of a drawing. I am interested in continuing to explore the ideas of childhood nostalgia in my future work. …
Human Impacts On Mammal Diversity From The Pleistocene To The Present, Carson P. Hedberg
Human Impacts On Mammal Diversity From The Pleistocene To The Present, Carson P. Hedberg
Biology ETDs
Humans have fundamentally altered the planet’s biodiversity. It is critical to characterize these changes, but also to understand how they impact the structure and function of modern ecosystems. This dissertation investigates how anthropogenically mediated species losses and/or introductions influence ecological function and community structure in mammals across multiple temporal and spatial scales. We found that selective loss of large-bodied mammals over the Late Quaternary has led to severe losses in functional diversity in modern ecosystems, suggesting megafaunal mammals contribute distinct ecological functions. These changes to mammal diversity and distribution over millennia have altered both global patterns in functional diversity and …

Reduced K+ Build-Up In T-Tubules Contributes To Resistance Of The Diaphragm To Myotonia, Jessica H. Myers, Kirsten Denman, Chris Dupont, Brent D. Foy, Mark M. Rich
Physics Faculty Publications
Patients with myotonia congenita suffer from slowed muscle relaxation caused by hyperexcitability. The diaphragm is only mildly affected in myotonia congenita; discovery of the mechanism underlying its resistance to myotonia could identify novel therapeutic targets. Intracellular recordings from two mouse models of myotonia congenita revealed the diaphragm had less myotonia than either the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) or the soleus muscles. A mechanism contributing to resistance of the diaphragm to myotonia was reduced depolarization of the interspike membrane potential during repetitive firing of action potentials, a process driven by build-up of K+ in small invaginations of muscle membrane known as …
