Biobased plastics are sometimes promoted as “environmentally friendly” compared to their conventional petrochemical-based counterparts, but their ecotoxicity is only partially understood. Biobased fibers are widely used in clothing and wet wipes and can accumulate in soils through the application of biosolid fertilizers. This study examined the lethal thresholds and sublethal toxicity of chemically characterized, additive-free, biobased (viscose and lyocell) compared to petrochemical-based (polyester) fibers on the key ecosystem engineer, Esenia fetida. Viscose and lyocell had LC20 values of 14.00 and 22.66 mg·L-1, respectively, and no observed effect concentrations (NOEC) of 0-2.8 mg·L-1 (72 h, OECD TG207 …

Can The Effluent From Wastewater Stabilization Ponds Be Effectively Managed For Health And Nutrient Recovery?, Michael Glass
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Wastewater stabilization ponds, such as facultative and maturation lagoons, have been shown to be effective processes to manage conventional water quality parameters found in domestic wastewater. The main goal of this thesis is to explore whether wastewater stabilization ponds can simultaneously reduce pathogens to safe levels while supporting agricultural activities through nutrient recovery. A large dataset for water quality of wastewater lagoon effluent in the U.S. was obtained at the state level and combined into regional southern and northern locations. Analysis of data showed there was significant difference in lagoon effluent concentration between northern and southern states for the water …

The role of transcription factors in photoreceptor gene regulation is fairly well understood, but knowledge of the cell-type-specific function of transcriptional cofactors remains incomplete. Here, we show that the transcriptional corepressor

Background: The impact of pneumonia (PNA) with concomitant renal disease (RD) has not been fully investigated in a United States Midwestern patient population, despite the morbidity and mortality associated with such diseases.
Materials and methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed on International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) data from a hospital system located in Southwest Missouri. Data was acquired from patients admitted between January 2019 and December 2021. Patients were separated into five groups (disease categories): acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), PNA, AKI with PNA, and CKD with PNA. The data were analyzed, and subset …

OBJECTIVE: To assess the efficacy and safety of stem cell therapy in human studies for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).
METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was performed across multiple databases, including Ovid MEDLINE ALL, Embase via Ovid SP, Scopus, Web of Science Core Collection, and Cochrane CENTRAL, up to January 31, 2024. Keywords and controlled vocabularies related to diabetic neuropathy and stem cell therapy were used. Inclusion criteria encompassed all controlled trials examining stem cell therapy for DPN, excluding animal or in vitro studies, review papers, conference abstracts, and editor letters. Data extraction and risk of bias assessment were independently performed …

The conformational ensemble and function of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs) are sensitive to their solution environment. The inherent malleability of disordered proteins, combined with the exposure of their residues, accounts for this sensitivity. One context in which IDPs play important roles that are concomitant with massive changes to the intracellular environment is during desiccation (extreme drying). The ability of organisms to survive desiccation has long been linked to the accumulation of high levels of cosolutes such as trehalose or sucrose as well as the enrichment of IDPs, such as late embryogenesis abundant (LEA) proteins or cytoplasmic abundant heat-soluble (CAHS) proteins. …

Activin receptor type 1 (ACVR1; ALK2) and activin receptor like type 1 (ACVRL1; ALK1) are transforming growth factor beta family receptors that integrate extracellular signals of bone morphogenic proteins (BMPs) and activins into Mothers Against Decapentaplegic homolog 1/5 (SMAD1/SMAD5) signaling complexes. Several activating mutations in ALK2 are implicated in fibrodysplasia ossificans progressiva (FOP), diffuse intrinsic pontine gliomas, and ependymomas. The ALK2 R206H mutation is also present in a subset of endometrial tumors, melanomas, non–small lung cancers, and colorectal cancers, and ALK2 expression is elevated in pancreatic cancer. Using DNA-encoded chemistry technology, we screened 3.94 billion unique compounds from our diverse …

Dehydration And Traumatic Brain Injury: A Pilot Study Of A Translational Rodent Model Of Conditions In Professional Combat Sports, Alexander S. Martinie, Corey Peacock, Chris Algeri, Bill Kochen
Journal for Sports Neuroscience
Traumatic brain injuries are a widespread public health issue, with athletes being at an increased risk of traumatic brain injury, especially in contact sports. Dehydration and rehydration prior to use of a weight drop served as a model for conditions experienced by professional boxers in a rodent model of traumatic brain injury. Following dehydration, rehydration, and traumatic brain injury procedures, subjects’ symptoms were assessed using the novel object recognition task, sucrose preference test, open field maze, and elevated zero maze. There were significant effects of both dehydration and TBI on time to righting, and there was a significant interaction between …

Enhancing Occupational Therapy Students’ Education In Animal-Assisted Therapy: Students’ Experience, Jessica Hill, Sophie Mensforth, Lucy Waldby, Jennifer Fleming, Teresa Quinlan, Carlie Driscoll
People and Animals: The International Journal of Research and Practice
Animal-assisted therapy has been gaining increased attention in occupational therapy practice and research. Yet the topic remains missing from university curricula at an international level. The aim of this study was to describe how animal-assisted therapy might be introduced to occupational therapy curricula and explore the experience of students who were able to implement their knowledge within a student-led clinic. Nine occupational therapy students engaged in individual semistructured interviews, allowing them to describe their experience participating in a student-led canine-assisted therapy clinic. Transcripts were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. Four themes emerged describing the students’ experience: outside my comfort zone, …

The recorded squids in our Egyptian Mediterranean and Red Seas are Loligo vulgaris, Loligo forbesi,Illex coindetii, Alloteuthis media, Uroteuthis photololigo duvaucelii and Sepioteuthis lessoniana. Alloteuthis media, Loligo vulgaris and Illex coindetii are restricted to the Egyptian Mediterranean waters. On the other hand Uroteuthis photololigo duvaucelii is an Egyptian Red Sea dweller. Loligo forbesi and Sepioteuthis lessoniana exist in both localities. This study focused mainly on using the sucker rings structure as a main tool for identification.
