A Proxy For Piety: A Closer Look At Religious Cost In The Substantial Burden Inquiry, Philip Andrew B. Wines
A Proxy For Piety: A Closer Look At Religious Cost In The Substantial Burden Inquiry, Philip Andrew B. Wines
Fordham Law Review Online
This Comment discusses whether the Establishment Clause and “religious question” doctrine prohibit courts from considering the subjective religious harm suffered by free exercise claimants when determining if laws impose a “substantial burden” on the claimant, as defined by the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA) and the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA). It explores a dilemma that courts are presently facing. They must choose either to wade into constitutionally perilous theological debates to decide cases on their merits, or to defer to free exercise claimants on their own assertions of substantial burden and risk swallowing up the law …
Canola In Prairie Canada: Its Development As A Regional Crop And Its Challenge To Wheat, Thomas A. Rumney
Canola In Prairie Canada: Its Development As A Regional Crop And Its Challenge To Wheat, Thomas A. Rumney
The Geographical Bulletin
Canola (Brassica napus), a variety of rapeseed used for edible vegetable oils, animal feed, and industrial oil products, is a relatively new addition to the repertoire of crops grown by farmers in the Canadian Prairies. Becoming common only after approximately 1960. Canadian canola production has been concentrated in Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, and has become a serious rival to wheat in terms of acreage and production levels. This paper examines the growth and development of this regional agricultural phenomenon from the poi nt of view of its location and distributional characteristics.

Liberty To The Captive: The Two Definitions Of Equality In The Abolitionist Movement, Justin Searls
Liberty To The Captive: The Two Definitions Of Equality In The Abolitionist Movement, Justin Searls
Bound Away: The Liberty Journal of History
The matter of the debate on equality’s definition between black Christian ministers and white Christian ministers is an understudied topic of discourse that merits attention in the historical profession. In recent years, there has been discussion surrounding the general racial divide within abolitionism. However, the religious perspective on this matter has received little to no attention. How did black ministers and white ministers address the question of emancipation and enfranchisement for African Americans in the abolitionist movement from the 1830s through the Civil War and beyond? There is a significant disparity in the discussion of equal rights for African Americans …

The pursuit of decolonization is a first act in the manifold acts of real, because substantive, liberation of a colonized country like the Philippines. The reason is clear: every colonizer not only colonizes a country but invades and occupies the mind of the people of that country, puts a claim to their bodies, and replaces their language and cultural practices with his own to complete his violent act of “discovering” the Other. Even with independence granted to a colonized people, the intellectual residues in a colonized consciousness that has coopted with the colonizer if only to survive continue to haunt, …
Philosophical Research And Narrative Inquiry, Jovino G. Miroy
Philosophical Research And Narrative Inquiry, Jovino G. Miroy
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This article endeavors to re-understand philosophical research through narrative inquiry. It proposes that inquiry in philosophical research leads to new relationships based on the articulation of the individual’s interaction in terms of temporality, spatiality, and sociality. Philosophical research may be considered as asking questions that emanate from the life situation of inquirers. Such investigation seeks to keep the questions alive and to tell better stories through doubt and movement. Research conceived as such is a way of living with others, especially those who cannot tell their own stories. Philosophical research, I argue, turns out to be crucial to democracy as …
Reconsidering Resentment, Christianne A. De Guzman
Reconsidering Resentment, Christianne A. De Guzman
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Resentment typically carries a notorious reputation and is often painted as a negative emotion that impedes communal peace, as it traps its victims in the past. The stigma against resentment, conceptualized broadly as a politicized form of anger, can be attributed to the influence of Nietzsche’s notion of ressentiment. Nevertheless, certain forms of resentment are acknowledged by philosophers as valid reactions to legitimate moral infractions. Resentment, they argue, is intrinsically tied to one’s notion of self-respect and moral values. While standard accounts of resentment may be theoretically cogent when applied to singular and individual issues, they are not conceptually adequate …

Ressentiment Of The Strong And Entitled: A Nietzschean Perspective On The Backlash Against Social Justice, Gio Theodore D. Apostol
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
Contemporary discourses often associate group resentment with leftist identity politics. At times, these discourses contain Nietzschean undertones that represent social justice as slave morality. Harold Bloom calls these groups the “Schools of Resentment,” which are comprised of putatively resentful groups such as “Feminists, Afrocentrists, Marxists, Foucault-inspired New Historicists, or Deconstructors.” The assumption that commentators like Bloom make is that these groups, not their opposing counterparts, are resentful. This essay aims to interrogate this assumption and proposes the alternative view that hegemonic groups that social justice movements seek to resist are also susceptible to ressentiment. I argue that the “ressentiment of …
Environment Education And The Ethics These Encourage: A Case For Outdoor Education In The Philippines, Isabella Ann Mendoza
Environment Education And The Ethics These Encourage: A Case For Outdoor Education In The Philippines, Isabella Ann Mendoza
Budhi: A Journal of Ideas and Culture
This paper discusses the role of environmental ethics and the values and motivations that can influence a person’s perspective and willingness to engage in pro-environment behavior. It explores the concept of outdoor education as an experience-based learning approach that has the potential to encourage pro-environment behavior by positively influencing the learner’s relationship with nature (ecosystemic), themselves (interpersonal), their community (intrapersonal), and the impacts of human societies on the environment (ekistic). It presents the possibilities of outdoor education as a strategy for strengthening environment education and the opportunities that can be explored through pursuing this approach in the Philippine setting.

Ai: A New Lone-Wolf Terrorism In The Digital Era (Preliminary Analysis), Marthsian Yeksi Anakotta Mya
Journal of Terrorism Studies
This article addresses two fundamental inquiries: can AI engage in acts of terrorism? If so, how might such a phenomenon occur? My hypothesis posits that AI is capable of independently committing acts of terrorism, a classification derived from the study of terrorism known as lone-wolf terrorism. To address these dual issues, this article adopts a criminological approach, which is further elaborated through an examination of lone-wolf terrorism and the advancement of artificial intelligence. As is widely recognized, contemporary terrorist organizations have harnessed technological advancements in the realm of information and communication to perpetrate acts of terrorism within the digital sphere. …

Finding Them Before They Find Us: Solving The Emerging Infectious Disease Crisis, Daniel R. Brooks
MANTER: Journal of Parasite Biodiversity
The human population grows daily, it’s on the move, and it’s carving a deep technological footprint on our planet. We alter landscapes and perturb ecosystems, inserting ourselves and other species into novel regions of the world, leading to potentially irreversible changes in the biosphere. This is not news. More than 75 years ago, Charles Elton, one of the founders of modern ecology, wrote, “We must make no mistake; we are seeing one of the greatest historical convulsions in the world’s fauna and flora.” We are also in the midst of a public health and epidemiological crisis. Climate change alters movements …
