Lessons Learned: Clay Lowery, Yasemin Esmen, Rosalind Z. Wiggins
Journal of Financial Crises
Clay Lowery was assistant secretary for international affairs at the US Treasury during the Global Financial Crisis (GFC). His office was responsible for economic and financial diplomacy, international monetary affairs, debt strategy, global financial services, and US participation at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). This “Lessons Learned” is based on an interview with Lowery in September 2019.

Anatomy Of The Repo Rate Spikes In September 2019, R. Jay Kahn, Matthew Mccormick, Vy Nguyen, Mark Paddrik, H. Peyton Young
Journal of Financial Crises
Repurchase agreement (repo) markets represent one of the largest sources of funding and risk transformation in the US financial system. Despite the large volume, repo rates can be quite volatile, and in the extreme, they have exhibited intraday spikes that are five to 10 times the rate on a typical day. This paper uses a unique combination of intraday timing data from the repo market to examine the potential causes of the dramatic spike in repo rates in mid-September 2019. We conclude that, in large part, the spike resulted from a confluence of factors that, when taken individually, would not …

Before working in the White House, she had been a senior VP at Fannie Mae. This “Lessons Learned” is based on an interview with …
Everything’S For Sale: The Barmaid As A Figure Of Commodity In A Bar At The Folies Bergère, Erin Quirk
Everything’S For Sale: The Barmaid As A Figure Of Commodity In A Bar At The Folies Bergère, Erin Quirk
The Confluence
This paper explores the role of the barmaid in relation to commodity in Édouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies Bergère during the explosion of mass consumption that helped define nineteenth century Paris modernity. Building upon existing scholarship, I explore the figure’s role as a member of the emerging working class female, a possible prostitute and an advertising device, promoting the bar’s goods, along with the experience of the Folies-Bergère to the city’s inhabitants. This paper includes formal and iconographical analysis of the figure in relation to commodity as well as a cultural analysis of how these representations reflect attitudes …
The Influence Of High Renaissance Art On The Mannerist Movement: Examining Representative Works Of Rosso Fiorentino, Pontormo, And Bronzino, Jana Ondrechen Hallford
The Influence Of High Renaissance Art On The Mannerist Movement: Examining Representative Works Of Rosso Fiorentino, Pontormo, And Bronzino, Jana Ondrechen Hallford
The Confluence
This paper explores the impact of the High Renaissance, led by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, on the development of the Mannerist movement. Specifically, it examines the ways in which three prominent Mannerist artists, Pontormo, Rosso Fiorentino, and Bronzino, built upon the "ideal" art produced during the High Renaissance.
Through a comparative analysis of works by the "three greats" of the High Renaissance and those of the three Mannerist artists, this paper identifies similarities and differences in style, composition, and subject matter. It also considers broader cultural influences that contributed to the development of Mannerism.
The paper argues that …

Bi-Negativity: An Assessment Of Negativity Surrounding Bisexuality From The Lgbtq+ And Heterosexual Communities, Whitney R. Ford
The Confluence
This study was conducted to test the hypothesis that negative attitudes towards bisexual people (bi-negativity) exists within the LGBTQ+ and heterosexual communities and to determine if levels of bi-negativity are higher within the LGBTQ+ group. I administered the Gender-Based Attitudes Towards Bisexuality (GBAB) Scale by Nielsen et al. (2022) to measure bi-negativity using an online survey. The results, obtained from 87 participants who identify as LGBTQ+ and 121 participants who identify as heterosexual between the ages of 18 and 80, support my hypothesis that bi-negativity exists within both groups. However, contrary to my second hypothesis, higher levels of bi-negativity were …

Direct Relationships Between The Five Internal Senses: The Extremes And In-Between Of The Inner Experience, Sydnie Hoyt, Camryn O'Neal, Miranda Brannum, Sara Bagley
The Confluence
Inner experience of all 5 modalities were investigated to determine if there were correlations amongst them and how visual mental imagery and internal hearing were used in an applied story. Our sample (N = 137) completed the Vividness of Visual Imagery Questionnaire (VVIQ; Marks, 1973) and the Plymouth Sensory Imagery Questionnaire (Psi-Q; Andrade et al., 2013) to obtain trait measures of the different modalities within the inner experience. Results showed statistically significant positive correlations between each of the trait measures of the 5 sensory modalities (visual mental imagery, inner hearing, taste, smell, and touch). Based on their VVIQ total scores, …

The Farmers Of Phelps County, Jacob F. Rinehart
The Confluence
As with most things, they’re never fully appreciated until after they’re no longer available. Sitting alone on campus on a cold autumn evening, when asked to write a response about the importance of home, I found myself thinking for the first time in my life about why I enjoyed the remote lifestyle of my childhood to my social urban present. Even after discovering my conclusions, I found it impossible to explain to others my feelings regarding my disdain towards a loud, bright, transient society that they feel is as much of a part of them as my hometown is of …

Lipid Membrane Self-Assembly And Synthesis In The Lab By Rapid, Low-Cost Microfluidics Approaches, Kathleen Hardwick, Shane O'Reilly
SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal
Lipid membranes, which self-assemble in nature and under laboratory conditions, can form vesicles called liposomes. The main uses for liposomes are in drug delivery systems and as animal cell models. From the initial research into lipid membrane science, to the systematic literature review using Web of Science, to refining the project scope, to the description of the method, this project follows the process of developing a method for lipid membrane self-assembly and synthesis in the lab. The result was a rapid prototyping method for fabricating microfluidic devices to test different designs for channels, for use with a liposome synthesis protocol. …

An Investigation Into Dietary Fibre Intake, Bowel Function And Mood Among A Sample Of Irish Adults, Sophie Mulligan, Ellen Lynch, Suzanne Doyle
SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal
Background
Previous studies have examined the relationship between dietary fibre intake and mood and bowel function separately, however, no cross-sectional study has yet explored the relationship between all three variables. This study examines the association between dietary fibre intake, bowel function and mood in a cohort of Irish adults at a university campus.
Methods
A cross-sectional study was conducted. An online questionnaire was distributed to staff and students of TU Dublin through email and publicised using posters. Three validated surveys were used in the design of the questionnaire, to assess dietary fibre intake, mood and bowel function. All staff and …

Regulation Of Mirnas In Obesity And Diabetes, Eva Maher, Ava O'Meara, Cathy Brougham
SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal
Introduction: The prevalence of obesity and obesity-related secondary disorders has increased dramatically in recent years. Dysregulated microRNA (miRNA) expression has been linked to the development of obesity and its associated disorders. Adipose derived stem cells (ADSCs) are promising cell models of obesity, obesity-related inflammation and diabetes. Furthermore, miRNA expression profiles have emerged as promising targets for the novel treatment of diseases such as obesity. In order to enhance miRNA-based therapies, the miRNA expression profile of obesity and its related disorders must be monitored to further understand the underlying mechanisms of obesity and to identify novel targets.

Melittin: A Natural Component Of Honeybee Venom As A Potential Anti-Cancer Therapy, Niamh Donnellan, Anne M. Friel
SURE Journal: Science Undergraduate Research Experience Journal
Cancer is a major cause of death worldwide and while chemotherapy is the main approach there are many negative associations in current treatment procedures. These include lack of selectivity, side effects and drug resistance. The hallmarks of cancer are a fundamental concept which aids the development of new means to treat human cancers through the understanding of the acquisition of these hallmarks from cells.
Melittin is a major peptide component of bee venom which has shown to be efficacious as an anticancer agent in preclinical and animal models. Melittin has many biological functions including pore formation in the phospholipid bilayer …

Improving Prosocial And Academic Skills While Decreasing Challenging Behavior, Tom Clees
Improving Prosocial And Academic Skills While Decreasing Challenging Behavior, Tom Clees
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Youth with challenging behaviors such as noncompliance, aggression, self-injury, and deficits in academic engagement are at-risk for future school failure, including suspension and expulsion, mental health challenges, and incarceration (Alberto and Troutman, 2022; Kauffman, 2016). Low academic achievement, behavioral excesses and social skills deficits are predictive of each other (Gresham, 2016), and may create an escalating cycle leading to further antisocial responses (Kaufman, 2016). The literature provides considerable research on evidence-based strategies that have been associated with positive academic (on-task, task completion) and behavioral (increase in prosocial skills with decreasing challenging behavior) outcomes, among which include (1) self-directed interventions, or …

Universal Data System To Increase Staff Buy-In, Renee L. Morris, Nathan Smith, Michael Thompson, Cynthia James, Nicole Tubner
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Although PBIS has been implemented in many schools across the state, there is still a concern of making the system universal to help increase staff buy-in. Therefore, it is crucial that schools include the entire staff with the behavior expectations for all students in the school. It is also important for students to be rewarded for putting forth their best effort.
Research shows that there are several products that can be purchased to allow a school to collect the data, reward points or implement incentives. However, there are cost efficient ways of implementing a school-wide data system. One strategy is …
Extinguish Teacher Burnout To Ignite School And Classroom Connectivity, Brandon Quinn Mr.
Extinguish Teacher Burnout To Ignite School And Classroom Connectivity, Brandon Quinn Mr.
Georgia Association for Positive Behavior Support Conference
Schools across the state and the nation face a significant concern in the education profession. Many educators are leaving the teaching field or seriously considering leaving earlier than expected. Couple this with the growing problem of new teacher retention, and anyone can see that our beloved institution is heading towards a major crisis if we are not already involved in one. One of the main culprits of the woes in education is teacher burnout. Developing a strong climate and culture in a classroom is very challenging for an educator experiencing burnout. In the “Extinguishing Teacher Burnout and Ignite School and …
“Homes For Ukraine”: Gendered Refugee Hosting, Differential Inclusion, And Domopolitics In The United Kingdom, Megan Crossley
“Homes For Ukraine”: Gendered Refugee Hosting, Differential Inclusion, And Domopolitics In The United Kingdom, Megan Crossley
Journal of International Women's Studies
Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, many Ukrainians have been displaced and sought refuge in other European countries, including the United Kingdom. Analyzing newspaper articles, public opinion polls, and emerging reports on the scheme, I argue that this policy draws on a particular conception of home, blurring the distinctions between private and public forms of hospitality towards certain kinds of migrants. In this moment of intensified public engagement with border politics, through a crisis displacing primarily women, this essay considers the “Homes for Ukraine” scheme as an overt manifestation of gendered domopolitics. In comparing the response to …
To What Extent Does Labor Force Participation Empower Women?, Karolin H. Lehmann
To What Extent Does Labor Force Participation Empower Women?, Karolin H. Lehmann
Journal of International Women's Studies
This paper critically examines the relationship between women’s labor force participation (LFP) and empowerment, particularly in the Global South, utilizing Naila Kabeer’s empowerment framework. By challenging the orthodox conceptualization of LFP, the study reveals its methodological limitations as a measure of women’s economic engagement. By emphasizing the dynamic nature of empowerment as a multifaceted process within the formal and informal sector, this paper highlights the interplay of agency, resources, and achievements within Kabeer’s framework. Drawing from global examples, it demonstrates the varied impacts of paid work on women’s decision-making in both private and public spheres. While acknowledging the potential of …
Leaning In And Bouncing Back: Neoliberal Feminism And The Work Of Self-Transformation In Ottessa Moshfegh’S My Year Of Rest And Relaxation (2018) And Halle Butler’S The New Me (2019), Isabel Sykes
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article is concerned with the capacity of contemporary fiction to reveal and oppose the ubiquity of work in Western culture. I conduct a comparative literary analysis of two contemporary novels that expose how neoliberal rationality has transformed work into an all-encompassing project, endorsed by a corresponding manifestation of feminism. Rather than challenging gendered labor relations through collective action, this “neoliberal feminism” incites women to turn their critical gaze within and transform themselves into resilient citizens and workers. Its sensibility is disseminated through popular literature, from “chick-lit” to self-help books, via narratives of physical and psychological self-transformation. This article builds …

Performance Art As A Site Of Socio-Spatial Resistance: Challenging Geographies Of Gendered Violence, Egle Karpaviciute
Performance Art As A Site Of Socio-Spatial Resistance: Challenging Geographies Of Gendered Violence, Egle Karpaviciute
Journal of International Women's Studies
By researching the intersections of art, geography, and violence, this paper interrogates performance art and its capacity to question one’s gendered existence in space/place. Through an analysis of two performance art pieces—J. Hawkes’s Playing Kate (2018) and Cassils’s PISSED (2017)—I explore the connections between art, gendered bodies, and space/place, while establishing a link between and across feminist and trans* gendered tyrannies. While discussing feminist and trans* performance art, this paper probes the felt and lived harms that are experienced by feminist women and trans* individuals in gendered locales and addresses ways in which art can challenge socio-spatial violence. Overall, through …
Survivors Of Sexual Assault On The Stand: A New Feminist And Victim-Centered Bioethical Framework To Discuss Justice And Trauma, Mathilde Genest
Survivors Of Sexual Assault On The Stand: A New Feminist And Victim-Centered Bioethical Framework To Discuss Justice And Trauma, Mathilde Genest
Journal of International Women's Studies
This essay argues that neuroscientific knowledge of trauma should be utilized to address injustices experienced by survivors of sexual assault (SA) in the courtroom and introduces a new feminist and victim-centered bioethical framework. Survivors face several injustices during a SA trial. Rape myths and victim stereotypes, which stem from gender discrimination, create unrealistic expectations for survivors’ behaviors and engender epistemic injustices. Other injustices are inherent to SA trials. Notably, the justice system fails to protect survivors and actually harms them by granting them little agency while risking secondary victimization. Many injustices experienced by survivors are linked to their reactions to …
Sober Women’S Feminist Resistance To Alcohol Marketing And Cultural Representations Of Women’S Drinking Practices, Claire Davey
Sober Women’S Feminist Resistance To Alcohol Marketing And Cultural Representations Of Women’S Drinking Practices, Claire Davey
Journal of International Women's Studies
Alcohol is marketed to women as a glamorous and empowering reward for juggling the demands of work and family life. This essay explores the ways in which women who do not drink reject the feminization of alcohol and drinking practices and frame this rejection within discourses of feminist resistance. This essay draws on data collected as part of a mixed-method ethnographic research project that investigates women’s use of, and participation in, online sobriety communities. Findings suggest that women who lead or utilize online sobriety communities have considerable awareness of the feminized marketing of alcohol, and some express strong ideological opposition …

Exploring Representation In Microbiology Introductory Courses Can Encourage A More Inclusive And Inspiring Environment For Students And Instructors, Jill A. Mikucki, Elizabeth Fozo
Feminist Pedagogy
Microbiology has a relatively brief history where significant discoveries are often linked with major events in human history - from disease outbreak to industrialization to climate change. The founders of key microbiological principles span across continents, genders, ethnicities, and socioeconomic status. However, the portrait described in many introductory textbooks center around a lone, typically white male scientist. Such narratives not only are misleading regarding the development of key principles in microbiology but can also reinforce inappropriate stereotypes as to whom belongs in microbiology. In our introductory microbiology course, we designed group work for Zoom break-out rooms to help engage students …
