A Quantum Physics-Based Force Field For Biomolecular Simulation, Roseane Dos Reis Silva Dec 2023

A Quantum Physics-Based Force Field For Biomolecular Simulation, Roseane Dos Reis Silva

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the development of a physics-based force field meticulously tailored to guide molecular dynamics simulations of biomolecules. At its core, the Hydrogen-like Intermolecular Polarizable Potential (HIPPO) force field emerges as an apex of achievement, devised to refine the precision of short-range intermolecular interactions. HIPPO's inception marks a profound stride towards heightened realism in molecular simulations, anchored in Quantum Physics theory and fortified by state-of-the-art Quantum Chemistry calculations. This force field's efficacy is attested by its systematic application in constructing models featuring diverse organic molecules, from water to benzene, and those with motifs resembling proteins and nucleic acids. HIPPO …

The Federal Government Must Revise Public Housing Policies To Protect Vulnerable Populations From Evictions, Caroline Grabowski Dec 2023

The Federal Government Must Revise Public Housing Policies To Protect Vulnerable Populations From Evictions, Caroline Grabowski

Population Health Research Brief Series

Over 100,000 Americans are now dying from drug overdoses annually, signifying that the goal of the 1986 Anti-Drug Abuse Act (ADAA) to end illicit drug use has not been achieved. What’s more, numerous statutes within the ADAA have created or worsened housing instability among people who use drugs and their families. This is because the ADAA allows public housing officials to use their own discretion when determining evictions and lease refusals and has disproportionately harmed individuals in public housing who did not participate in the drug-related activities that led to their eviction. This brief describes how the ADAA negatively affects …

Connecting With Their Students: Understanding The Impact Of Teachers Using Culturally Relevant Literacy Practices In Elementary Classrooms, Beatrice Acosta Dec 2023

Connecting With Their Students: Understanding The Impact Of Teachers Using Culturally Relevant Literacy Practices In Elementary Classrooms, Beatrice Acosta

Masters Theses (Archived)

Despite extensive research indicating the importance of educators connecting with their students, a significant number of teachers fail to associate classroom curriculum with their students’ cultural backgrounds and lived experiences. Even with the best intentions, teachers frequently encounter difficulties in establishing connections with students and seamlessly integrating their diverse cultures and experiences outside of the classroom into lessons. Culturally Relevant Pedagogy is one method teachers use to incorporate their students’ culture into the classroom so that students see themselves in the lessons and become more engaged in their learning. This study was designed to explore teachers’ feelings of cultural competency …

Social Justice Mathematics: Classroom Practices That Give Students Rigor While Building Agency, Emily Marquise Dec 2023

Social Justice Mathematics: Classroom Practices That Give Students Rigor While Building Agency, Emily Marquise

Masters Theses (Archived)

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of a social justice approach to mathematics instruction. While many students have math aversion, students in low socioeconomic communities exhibit this to a higher degree putting them at a disadvantage as they progress through their educational career. More than 3.4 million K-12 students in the United States come from families that earn less than the median income yet achieve scores in the top percentile (Wyner et al., 2007). This raises the question of why so many students in low-socioeconomic settings are not given rigorous content that will keep them competitive …

“My Job Is To Teach”: How Teachers Approach State Laws In A Culturally Relevant Classroom, Clayton Jaskinia Dec 2023

“My Job Is To Teach”: How Teachers Approach State Laws In A Culturally Relevant Classroom, Clayton Jaskinia

Masters Theses (Archived)

The murders of James Bryd. Jr, Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown, and Sandra Bland led to the Black Lives Matter movement. Following these deaths, schools across the country that were named after Confederates and statues of them were taken down, causing backlash against more substantial steps to address white supremacy in the curriculum. This qualitative study investigates how social studies teachers are reacting to laws that restrict the teaching of history and deny Texas students the right to be represented in their education. The findings demonstrate a link between teachers’ understanding of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy and their solidarity with students of …

Best Practices For Serving Lbgtq+ Students In The 21st Century: A Systematic Literature Review, Mary Elizabeth Turner Dec 2023

Best Practices For Serving Lbgtq+ Students In The 21st Century: A Systematic Literature Review, Mary Elizabeth Turner

Library Faculty Publications

To best serve LGBTQ+ students in an academic library, it is necessary to develop a list of best practices. While there is ample literature on the topic of the needs of LGBTQ+ students in academic libraries and how to address those needs, there is no readily accessible list of evidence-based best practices for general implementation. To address this need, the author identified an initial pool of 210 articles published in library journals between 2000 and 2022. Of those 210 articles, 109 articles met all conditions for further review. A total of 21 articles within the review pool contained specific recommendations …

Stochastic Simulation Of Construction Methods For Multi-Purpose Utility Tunnels, Shayan Jorjam, Mohammed Mawlana, Amin Hammad Dec 2023

Stochastic Simulation Of Construction Methods For Multi-Purpose Utility Tunnels, Shayan Jorjam, Mohammed Mawlana, Amin Hammad

College of Architecture and the Built Environment Faculty Papers

The traditional method of installing underground utilities (e.g., water, sewer, gas pipes, electrical cables) by burying them under roads has been used for decades. However, the repeated excavations related to this method cause problems, such as traffic congestion and business disruption, which can significantly increase financial and social costs. Multi-purpose Utility Tunnels (MUTs) are a good alternative for buried utilities. Although the initial cost of MUTs is higher than that of the traditional method, social cost savings make them more feasible, especially in dense urban areas. Different factors, such as the specifications of utilities, the location of the MUTs, and …

Traffic Congestion Analysis Using Sir Epidemic Model, Zani Anjani Rafsanjani, Ratna Herdiana, R Heru Tjahjana, Yogi Ahmad Erlangga Dec 2023

Traffic Congestion Analysis Using Sir Epidemic Model, Zani Anjani Rafsanjani, Ratna Herdiana, R Heru Tjahjana, Yogi Ahmad Erlangga

All Works

In this work, we propose a mathematical model to represent traffic congestion in the street under some consideration. A congestion problem in a city highway becomes a critical issue since congestion at one point affected congestion propagation on the other points. We focus on the propagation of traffic propagation by adopting the concept of disease spread using the SIR model. We consider that the disease in traffic problems is congestion. Meanwhile, vehicles that enter the highway are susceptible to congestion. In contrast, vehicles free from traffic jams represent individuals free from disease. The SIR model can explain the spread of …

Humility And Charismatic Leadership: A Boost Or Bust For Leadership Outcomes In The Russian Context, Stern Neill, Raghuvar Dutt Pathak, Titov Sergei, Reinout E. De Vries, Vipin Gupta, Zafar Husain

Marketing

This study unpacks how leader humility and charisma are related to leader effectiveness and satisfaction with the leader and examines how the need for leadership may moderate these relationships. We used data from 252 respondents from Russian companies in a 2 (high vs. low leader charisma) × 2 (high vs. low leader humility) vignette design in which levels of charisma and humility were manipulated. While leader humility was found to have a positive effect on satisfaction with a leader, no significant link between leader humility and leader effectiveness was observed in this study. Leader charisma was positively related to leader …

From Congregations To Candidates: How Religion Explains The Partisan Gender Gap In State Legislatures, Ashlan Gruwell Dec 2023

From Congregations To Candidates: How Religion Explains The Partisan Gender Gap In State Legislatures, Ashlan Gruwell

Undergraduate Honors Theses

While much has been said about both the gender gap and partisan gender gap in representation in Congress and state legislatures, most of this research ignores the critical role of religion as an explanatory variable. I propose a new theory where the presence of a high proportion of evangelical Protestants in the electorate explains both the gender gap in representation that has long existed as well as the emergence of a partisan gap among women in state legislatures. As evangelical Protestants became politicized and flocked to the Republican Party in the 1980s and 1990s, more Democratic women were elected and …

Barneche, Conrad W. Speed, Robert D. Mccauley, Ryan D. Day, Cecile Dang, Rebecca Fisher, Hosna Gholipour-Kanani, Stephen J. Newman

Fisheries Research Articles

High-intensity, impulsive sounds are used to locate oil and gas reserves during seismic exploration of the seafloor. The impacts of this noise pollution on the health and mortality of marine invertebrates are not well known, including the silverlip pearl oyster (Pinctada maxima), which comprises one of the world's last remaining significant wildstock pearl oyster fisheries, in northwestern Australia. We exposed ≈11,000 P. maxima to a four-day experimental seismic survey, plus one vessel-control day. After exposure, survival rates were monitored throughout a full two-year production cycle, and the number and quality of pearls produced at harvest were assessed. Oysters from two …

Nurturing Sustainable Careers: How New India’S Nep 2020 Is Driving Employability Through Skills-Based Education, Sadhna Dash, Ramakanth Tallapragada, Elizabeth Abba

Journal of Management for Global Sustainability

As New India prepares to become a “developed” country by the year 2047, the strategies for managing one of the most populous economies in the world are undergoing steady and positive transformation. The country’s new National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has set the context for enhanced employability for the masses and sustainable careers, potentially transforming the youngest workforce in the world not only by equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and abilities that the workplace demands but also by providing opportunities for inclusive, sustainable, and trans-disciplinary employment. However, given that the NEP 2020 will not succeed as a standalone initiative, …

The Problem Of Deification Within The Church Context In India: An Implausible Deification, Sadananda Rao Matangi Dec 2023

The Problem Of Deification Within The Church Context In India: An Implausible Deification, Sadananda Rao Matangi

Masters Theses

The self-deification has been the main point on which several related issues have been discussed. No humans are equal with God but are only the servants of God. Even Jesus Christ agreed that the Father is greater than He. The concept of self-deification cannot be used overtly or covertly for self-elevation, Sacro-egoism, Sacro-egotism, self-advantage, or self-probability. On accepting Jesus as one’s personal Lord and Savior, a person may get the blessing of forgiveness of sins, sanctification, salvation, filling of the Holy Spirit, assurance of resurrection, and being with the Lord (on the Second Coming). That does not mean they are …

Improving The Quality Of Micronutrient Food Composition Data In Sub-Saharan Africa Using Predictive Analytics, Junior Mbuyamba Muka Dec 2023

Improving The Quality Of Micronutrient Food Composition Data In Sub-Saharan Africa Using Predictive Analytics, Junior Mbuyamba Muka

Theses and Dissertations

High-quality food composition data are indispensable for decision making in several health, agricultural, and nutrition-related activities. Analytical data are the most accurate type of food composition data (FCD). Yet, most food composition databases (FCDBs) compiled in Sub-Saharan Africa only contain a small amount of analytical data collected from foods consumed in this region. Most of the data are either borrowed / copied from FCDBs collected in other parts of the world, calculated, imputed, or presumed data. Even with these alternative types, FCDBs in Sub-Saharan Africa have not reached a satisfactory level of completeness, as they still have missing data for …
