Participants’ Experiences In Heutagogy Teacher Professional Education In Indonesia, Silvia Handayani, Lewes Peddell, Tony Yeigh

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This study investigated a heutagogy-informed teacher professional education model designed to assist Indonesian teachers in achieving the competencies established by the Indonesian government to address teacher quality issues. The critical concepts of the model include self-determined learning, metacognitive reflection, collaborative learning, and capability development. An embedded design methodology, grounded in pragmatism as the overarching research paradigm, was employed for this investigation. The findings of this study provide significant insights for enhancing teachers’ professional education in Indonesia, particularly in terms of the effectiveness of heutagogy-informed approaches compared to traditional approaches of teacher training, with additional benefits stemming from heutagogy-informed, technology-facilitated learning …

Teachers’ Experiences That Challenge Their Decision To Continue: What Teachers Really Need, Elizabeth Allotta Jan 2023

Teachers’ Experiences That Challenge Their Decision To Continue: What Teachers Really Need, Elizabeth Allotta

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Increasing global teacher attrition rates and the difficulty of filling teacher positions in Australian schools have led to rising concerns about teacher supply and demand. While attrition factors and rates have been known for over thirty years, little has changed or improved. This raises the question, ‘how and why do some teachers continue while others leave?’ A postqualitative ethnographic study into the experiences that have challenged teachers’ decision to continue highlights the complexity of the issues underlying teacher attrition with known attrition factors, in particular workplace and time, being compounded by unspoken and silenced challenges that contribute to teachers leaving. …

Student Teachers’ Initial Professional Identity: A Case In An Efl Teacher Education Program, Uun Muhaji, Didi Sukyadi, Ahmad Bukhori Muslim Jan 2023

Student Teachers’ Initial Professional Identity: A Case In An Efl Teacher Education Program, Uun Muhaji, Didi Sukyadi, Ahmad Bukhori Muslim

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Student teachers enter teacher education programs with existing values, beliefs, and knowledge about teaching. However, little is known about the significant resources that shape this initial professional identity. Additionally, there is a lack of understanding regarding how first-year student teachers depict their initial professional identity in the context of Indonesia. This case study examines the initial professional identity of 23 first-year Indonesian student teachers in an English as a Foreign Language Teacher Education Program (EFLTEP) in Indonesia. Utilizing Esteban-Guitart's Funds of Identity theory, data were collected through participants' narratives via significant circles, self-portrait drawings and interviews. Data were …

Arguing For The Subjectification Of Graduate Teachers, Karen Maras, Geraldine Townend, Tony Loughland, Hoa Nguyen, Dennis Alonzo, Marie Mcgregor, Andy Gao, Tanya Kwee

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

The quality of graduate teachers is a significant concern for teacher educators, policymakers and the public. Initiatives regarding the quality assurance of initial teacher education (ITE) programs require critical examination to ensure that ITE programs develop proficient graduate teachers to meet the demands of modern classrooms. In this paper, we draw on Biesta’s (2015, 2019, 2020) theoretical framing of purpose in education (i.e., qualification, socialisation and subjectification) to analyse the policy texts related to graduate teaching performance assessment from institutions involved in the creation and implementation of the Teaching Performance Assessment (TPA) in ITE in Australia. Researchers used document analysis …

Scaffolding Methods And The Long Shadow Of Ramist Formalism: A Call For Correction In Teacher Education, Brian R. Moon Jan 2023

Scaffolding Methods And The Long Shadow Of Ramist Formalism: A Call For Correction In Teacher Education, Brian R. Moon

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Modern Anglophone pedagogy is characterised by some distinctive approaches to teaching and learning that set it apart from earlier instructional traditions. Among these are certain forms of scaffolding that emphasise students’ construction of knowledge. Such methods are consistent with a trend toward visible activity and display in pedagogical practice, in place of dialogue and inner contemplation. In ITE courses, scaffolding strategies are promoted to beginning teachers as novel and effective products of modern cognitive psychology and constructivist theories of learning. Here I offer a historical correction to that view, demonstrating that today’s popular scaffolding strategies have a much longer history, …

Mapping Assessment Tasks And Lecturer Considerations: A Case Study Of A Nz Primary Teacher Education Programme, Wendy Carss, Bronwen Cowie, Sheralyn Cook

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

Initial teacher education programme and paper assessments need to encompass university degree requirements and attest to student mastery of teacher professional competencies. This article reports one aspect of an investigation of the nature and principles employed in the design of assessments for a three-year Bachelor of Teaching (Primary) programme. The assessment tasks included in the 2022 academic papers were mapped and paper leaders interviewed; practicum and placement papers were not included because these were being redeveloped at the time. Findings are consistent with assessment design principles associated with authenticity and equity of access to the demonstration of understanding through tasks …

Life After Death: A Field Experiment With Small Businesses On Information Frictions, Stigma, And Bankruptcy, Shai Bernstein, Emanuele Colonnelli, Mitchell Hoffman Jan 2023

Life After Death: A Field Experiment With Small Businesses On Information Frictions, Stigma, And Bankruptcy, Shai Bernstein, Emanuele Colonnelli, Mitchell Hoffman

Faculty Publications

In an RCT with US small businesses, we document that a large share of firms are not well-informed about bankruptcy. Many assume that bankruptcy necessarily entails the death of a business and do not know about Chapter 11, where debts are renegotiated so that the business can continue operating. Firms also exhibit bankruptcy-related stigma, believing that bankruptcy is embarrassing, a sign of failure, and a negative signal to employees and customers. Short educational videos that address information or stigma increase knowledge and decrease stigma, both immediately and durably over 4 months. Videos increase reported interest in using Chapter 11 bankruptcy …

Graduate Research Papers

Trap-neuter-release is a humane alternative solution to aid in decreasing community cat populations. This research paper evaluates the intrinsic and extrinsic factors contributing to successful community cat populations, including reproductive success, transmission of feline and zoonotic diseases, population size, cat immigration between colonies, food availability, and wildlife extinction. Additionally, this research paper evaluates and analyzes TNR's impacts on urban and rural demographics. Furthermore, the paper will evaluate TNR as a long-term solution and its effectiveness in decreasing community cat populations. Lastly, this paper provides suggestions for future research regarding community cat populations.

Methodology: BS characterization were done in different farmer fields where soil samples were also collected during dry and rainy seasons. Soil silicon and acidity were determined in those samples and rice grain yield at harvest time were recorded in different sites. Weather data related to sites and seasons were used to find out correlations. Results: Occurrence of BS was found in forest zones with scores of 4 and 3 compared to 1 and 2 in savanna and transitional zones, respectively, with seasonal variation. Both rice production and the occurrence of BS were explained by soil parameters in conjunction with climatic …

The potato crop is prone to infection by an estimated 50 different categories of pests and diseases whose causal agents are either viruses, bacteria, nematodes, insects, or fungi (Hussain and Singh, 2016; Jansson and Raman, 2019; Mangal et al., 2022; Munyaneza and Bizimungu, 2022). These pathogenic organisms are either soil or air-borne and usually inflict harm on all plant parts. The most commonly encountered diseases that affect potato growth and development include common scab, dry rot, black scurf, late blight, stem canker, premature deaths, and a wide array of nematodes. Soil-based infections that affect the quality of tubers include pink …

In Senegal, stock recovery and fish classification are based on manual data collection, and the fish caught by the fishery are not often declared. What's more, data collection suffers from a lack of tools for monitoring and counting fish caught at fishing docks. Researchers have carried out studies on the fishery in Senegal, but data collection is almost non-existent. Moreover, there is no local fisheries database or automatic detection and counting algorithm. In this paper, a semantic segmentation algorithm is proposed using intelligent systems for the collection of fishery catches, for the formation of the local database. The data are …

Contextualizing Corruption: Foreign Financing Bans And Campaign Finance Law, Lori A. Ringhand Jan 2023

Contextualizing Corruption: Foreign Financing Bans And Campaign Finance Law, Lori A. Ringhand

Scholarly Works

In Bluman v. FEC, the court held that foreign nationals could be prohibited from making even independent expenditures because such expenditures risked inappropriately influencing the choices made by American voters. The result in Bluman is correct, but the court’s reasoning is wrong. Foreign financing bans are constitutional not because foreign speech may “inappropriately” influence voters, but for the same reason all successful restrictions on political speech are constitutional: because of the risk they pose to the appearance or actuality of corrupting the conduct of public officials. The sense of indebtedness or ingratiation independent expenditures can induce in elected officials may …

Silencing Litigation Through Bankruptcy, Pamela Foohey, Christopher K. Odinet Jan 2023

Silencing Litigation Through Bankruptcy, Pamela Foohey, Christopher K. Odinet

Scholarly Works

Bankruptcy is being used as a tool for silencing survivors and their families. When faced with claims from multiple plaintiffs related to the same wrongful conduct that can financially or operationally crush the defendant over the long term—a phenomenon we identify as onslaught litigation—defendants harness bankruptcy’s reorganization process to draw together those who allege harm and pressure them into a swift, universal settlement. In doing so, they use the bankruptcy system to deprive survivors of their voice and the public of the truth. This Article identifies this phenomenon and argues that it is time to rein in this destructive use …

Special purpose acquisition companies (SPA Cs) exploded in popularity in the recent past, luring both adventurous retail investors and sophisticated institutional investors. In a SPAC, a publicly traded shell corporation acquires a private target, thereby taking it public in a manner that circumvents the rigors of a traditional initial public offering (IPO). Proponents vaunt SPACs' ability to simplify the process of accessing the public markets and democratize capitalism, but in their current form, they pose risks to retail investors and to the market as a whole. Using a hand-collected dataset spanning 2010- 2021, this Article fills a gap in the …

Economic And Input-Use Efficiency Of Nitrogen Management Techniques In Non-Irrigated Maize Production, Katie J. Bathke Jan 2023

Economic And Input-Use Efficiency Of Nitrogen Management Techniques In Non-Irrigated Maize Production, Katie J. Bathke

Honors Program: Senior Projects (Public)

The efficiency of nitrogen (N) management has become a main concern in agricultural cropping systems for understanding the optimal N rate to help producers improve economically and reduce the exhaustion of natural resources environmentally. Nitrogen rates vary both temporally and spatially by the interactions of the soil environment and rainfall through a growing season. Thus, a site-specific approach can further optimize this variability with the understanding of the role soil variability plays in the N rate applied to a non-irrigated field. The objective of this study was to evaluate the various nitrogen treatments for their nutrient use efficiency and economic …

The Department Of Transportation’S Failures In Regulating Emotional Support Animals, Jillian Doughty Jan 2023

The Department Of Transportation’S Failures In Regulating Emotional Support Animals, Jillian Doughty

Journal of Air Law and Commerce

In the past decade, the number of emotional support animals being used to treat a wide array of mental and emotional disorders has multiplied exponentially. This increase has been met with mixed reactions in the context of air travel. While some passengers are thrilled to sit next to a dog on their flight, others are frustrated due to the belief passengers with emotional support animals are exploiting a loophole to travel with their pet for free. Regardless of the differing perceptions, emotional support animals are a valid, affordable way to treat mental health illnesses without incurring negative side effects associated …

When Federal Standards Crash And Burn: The Need To Distinguish Aviation Product Liability Claims From In-Air Operations Cases, Olivia Cahill Jan 2023

When Federal Standards Crash And Burn: The Need To Distinguish Aviation Product Liability Claims From In-Air Operations Cases, Olivia Cahill

Journal of Air Law and Commerce

If you are injured in an aviation disaster or lose a loved one in a plane crash, may you seek recovery under state law? Do federal regulations provide adequate opportunities to compensate aviation crash victims? These are questions few people think to ask themselves. A more common query is what entity regulates the more than 16 million flights that occur yearly in the U.S., and how do you know whether the aircraft you fly on are safe?

The tragic Boeing 737 MAX crashes initiated a federal oversight investigation into the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Industry whistleblowers revealed severe lapses in …
