On Gary Snyder’S Tradaptation Of Cold Mountain Poems And Its Spiritual Salvation And Literary Enlightenment In Postwar America, Hu Anjiang Oct 2023

On Gary Snyder’S Tradaptation Of Cold Mountain Poems And Its Spiritual Salvation And Literary Enlightenment In Postwar America, Hu Anjiang

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Cold Mountain Poems (CMPs), which have been neglected in the history of Chinese literature for ages, captured the attention of most Americans immediately after its being translated into America by the American poet Gary Snyder in 1950s, however. It is Snyder that reconfigured and recreated a sagacious Chinese Chan Buddhist poet Han-shan (literally, Cold Mountain), the acknowledged author of Cold Mountain Poems, in his translation for the postwar Americans in the midst of varied social problems and cultural identity crisis after World War II. Snyder eventually found in his translation of Cold Mountain Poems a back-to-nature remedy of …

Topological Tropology Of V.S. Naipaul’S Islamic Travelogues And Daniel Pipes’ Islamic History: Ahistorical Historicism, Md. Habibullah

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

Nobel laureate V. S. Naipaul’s (1932-2018) first Islamic travelogue Among the Believers: An Islamic Journey (1981) contains his experience of a visit from August 1979 to February 1980 to the four non-Arab Muslim-majority countries – Iran, Pakistan, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Similarly, his last Islamic travelogue Beyond Belief: Islamic Excursions among the Converted Peoples (1998) has a description of another visit to the same countries for five-month in 1995. Concurrently, Daniel Pipes (1949-), an American historian, published his doctoral dissertation, Slave Soldiers and Islam: The Genesis of a Military System (1981), which represents Islamic culture as the first instigator of …

Westernization Or Localization? The (Mis)Reading Of “The Tragic” In Modern Chinese Literary Discourse, Tian Gu Oct 2023

Westernization Or Localization? The (Mis)Reading Of “The Tragic” In Modern Chinese Literary Discourse, Tian Gu

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

This paper examines the features and causal factors in constructing an idea of the tragic in modern Chinese literary discourse. It attempts at revisiting and reproducing the realities of misreading and variation upon modern Chinese introduction of the term “tragedy” (beiju) at different socio-historical periods, and has observed the interplay between two trends, namely, Westernization and localization, through the negotiation of “the tragic” into modern Chinese literary practice. These two trends have been integrated by a political and pragmatic perspective, which dominates the formation of a modern Chinese literary discourse on “the tragic”. This perspective offers both possibility …

Children’S Gothic In The Chinese Context: The Untranslatability And Cross-Cultural Readability Of A Literary Genre, Chengcheng You Oct 2023

Children’S Gothic In The Chinese Context: The Untranslatability And Cross-Cultural Readability Of A Literary Genre, Chengcheng You

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

As an emerging literary subgenre in the twenty-first century, Children’s Gothic challenges and blends the norms of both children’s literature and Gothic literature, featuring child characters’ self-empowerment in the face of fears and dark impulses. The foreignness and strangeness that pertain to the genre haunt the border of its translatability. Daniel Handler’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (1999–2006), written under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket, poses a chain of translational challenges due to its linguistic creativity, paratextual art, and mixed style of horror and dark humor intended for a child readership. To investigate the interplay between Children’s Gothic and its (un)translatability …

Preparing Structural Engineering Graduates To Increase Their Positive Impact, Louise Lynch, James Norman Oct 2023

Preparing Structural Engineering Graduates To Increase Their Positive Impact, Louise Lynch, James Norman

Research Papers

Traditionally the role of a structural engineer was to design structures that were safe for use by society and that enabled society to develop and evolve. However, with the climate emergency structural engineers need to be more conscious of the choices that are made on their projects that lead to overuse of material, and work to reduce the embodied carbon in their structures. This cannot be achieved in isolation, it’s a systemic issue, where decisions made throughout a project, from concept to construction, can impact the embodied carbon. The structural engineer needs to be mindful of these decisions to have …

The digitalization of engineering education has made significant progress in recent years not only due to societal circumstances such as COVID-19, but also thanks to technological development and progress and digital transformation of engineering education seems more imminent than ever. This paper presents the development of a framework and process for an ongoing scoping review regarding frameworks for digital transformation of engineering education. Empirical studies on digital innovations in specific small-scale contexts are numerous and the literature is rich. This study, however, aims to identify more systematic and holistic approaches to digital transformation. At this stage the review work has …

What Happens When The Public Wants To Remove Public Art? The Second Circuit Weighs In On One Recent Vara Case, Paige Green Oct 2023

What Happens When The Public Wants To Remove Public Art? The Second Circuit Weighs In On One Recent Vara Case, Paige Green

Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog

n 1990, the Visual Artists’ Rights Act (VARA) became a welcome addition to the federal Copyright Act of 1976. VARA was the first time the “moral rights” of an artist were federally protected in the United States. Moral rights are commonly understood to provide attribution to artists and protect the integrity of visual art pieces. Under VARA, this means authors have a right to claim authorship on pieces they create, prevent the use of their name on a work they did not create, and prohibit the destruction of works of “recognized statute” (both intentional and through gross negligence). The law …

Vignettes Expose Undergraduates’ Perceptions Of Consent And Sexual Assault: Implications For Sexual Assault Education, April N. Terry, Mackenzie Orchard Esq., Vivian Aranda-Hughes Oct 2023

Vignettes Expose Undergraduates’ Perceptions Of Consent And Sexual Assault: Implications For Sexual Assault Education, April N. Terry, Mackenzie Orchard Esq., Vivian Aranda-Hughes

Academic Leadership Journal in Student Research

Under Title IX and the 2011 Dear Colleague Letter, universities were reminded of their obligation to educate, prevent, and respond to sexual assaults and other forms of gender-based violence. The current study used a survey packet including a Rape Myth Acceptance scale, questions about related education, and a scale rating participants’ level of confidence on seven vignettes. The sample indicated participants were more likely to recognize whether consent was given than they were to recognize whether the vignette met legal standards for sexual assault. The results can provide universities with information to better individualize their sexual assault prevention efforts.

The Challenge Of Hyperdistraction For Design Education, Joao Ferreira Oct 2023

The Challenge Of Hyperdistraction For Design Education, Joao Ferreira

IASDR Conference Series

This paper explores the concept of hyperdistraction, a cognitive state where a person constantly changes focus from one digital task to another and has a consistently low tolerance to boredom. The paper presents several studies that show that hyperdistraction is prevalent among younger generations, resulting in increased anxiety, poor mental health, and academic decline. Next, we highlight the challenges that design educators face to help students learn how to design in the face of a constant stream of information arriving at a rate the brain cannot process. We argue that managing attention is crucial for creative disciplines like design, which …

Exploring The Use Of A Digital Twin In Theatre Stage Design, Emma Kirjavainen, Matilda Kalving, Juri Etto, Ashley Colley

IASDR Conference Series

The rapid development of technology has brought new methods and tools to physical space planning, offering opportunities to save time and materials. We present a case study where virtual reality (VR) was used for previsualization in the design of a theater production. A digital twin, i.e., a virtual environment matching the exact dimensions and visual appearance of the physical theatre stage was developed. During the design of a theater production, the potential of the approach was evaluated together with theater design and production experts with different backgrounds. We report that VR has can play a useful role in the context …

Design Intervention To Aid Young Indians In Identifying Triggers Of Generalised Anxiety Disorder (Gad), Nilanjana Bairagi, Ajithsenb Selvadhas, Sowndarya Acharya Oct 2023

Design Intervention To Aid Young Indians In Identifying Triggers Of Generalised Anxiety Disorder (Gad), Nilanjana Bairagi, Ajithsenb Selvadhas, Sowndarya Acharya

IASDR Conference Series

Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD) is an emotional and fear-based, recurrent response to a perceived or real threat. It causes difficulty in dealing with every-day experiences. It afflicts 13.9% of the urban residents in India and requires a proactive approach to coping. GAD is not caused by stress but rather is sensitive to stress. Varying stimuli lead to automatic, unexpected and intense reactions called triggers. Awareness about triggers helps one understand their emotional thresholds and supports self-management. The existing literature provides a multi-variant perspective about nudges that cause anxiety. However, localised probing is minimal in India due to a lack of …

Through the paper, the methodology is reviewed, and the participatory research process is described; based on the first stage of the research, some initial reflections and findings are presented regarding alternative use of the methodology and possible positive and negative effects.

The Role Of Participatory Transition Design In Mitigating Erosion Of Participatory Democracy, Alma Leora Culén Oct 2023

The Role Of Participatory Transition Design In Mitigating Erosion Of Participatory Democracy, Alma Leora Culén

IASDR Conference Series

Democracies increasingly face challenges. Focusing on participatory democracy, we explore their intersection with the participatory design of digital technology that might strengthen rather than undermine local participatory democracy initiatives. Two influential examples found at the intersection of participatory design, technological innovation and democracy are discussed and contrasted with our approach to understanding this entanglement by looking into opportunities for small, local communities to develop and maintaining democratic discourse, trust, and good decision-making, potentially paving ways to mitigate democratic erosion at a larger scale. The work contributes by showing how participatory and transition design might be integrated. Further, we propose and …

Museums At A Crossroads, Licia Calvi Oct 2023

Museums At A Crossroads, Licia Calvi

IASDR Conference Series

What type of museum experiences can be designed when local communities are involved? And where does technology fit? How can museums as places to nurture community engagement also become spaces to have cultural, transformative experiences? Museums and cultural heritage institutions are not only custodians of the some of the world’s most valuable natural and creative works; they are themselves creative institutions that reflect and shape cultural production. Especially since the advent of the New Museology, this creative potential has been understood in interdisciplinary terms, bringing theories and methods such as postcolonial studies and poststructuralism to bear on these processes of …
