Breaking Barriers To Sustainable Costume Design: A Community-Driven Approach With German Theatres, Urs A. G. Dierker, Anja Gast
IASDR Conference Series
The Circular Costume Design Lab (CCD Lab) is a participatory initiative exploring sustainable practices in costume design and making within the German theatre industry. Preliminary research suggested that theatre costume making is a tradition-based craft with limited agency for systemic change. The CCD Lab aimed to understand how tightly-knit communities of costume professionals perceive and experience environmental and social sustainability, and how broader social, cultural, and political forces shape their work towards sustainability in state-funded and independent theatres. The CCD Lab consisted of eight online workshops co-developed by two costume makers and researchers in collaboration with two professional associations. The …

Shifting Identities: New Materialities Of Power And Control, Joaquin Santuber, Pablo Hermansen
IASDR Conference Series
Identities, as the materialities that produce them, are changing with the translation of analogue methods of individualization into digital ones. In 2020, with the mobility restrictions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, private and public services moved online performing new forms of identities. From in-person interactions, we —users— were reduced to pixels and data objects which constituted our digital identities: a username, a password, and a profile picture. In Shifting identities, we analyse these changes in an iconic context in the history of identities: a court of justice. Traditionally, a courtroom was a space to perform the authority of the State—a …

IASDR Conference Series
Automated and connected technologies are increasingly present in everyday life. The concept of co-performance offers a new perspective on artificial agency by understanding artifacts as capable of performing everyday practices next to people. In this pictorial we adopt a lens informed by co-perfor- mance, and propose the visual vocabulary of the screenplay as a novel way to represent and annotate co-performances. We highlight conflicts and how they are they are resolved through the enactment of new interfaces in-use. We visually represent and annotate scenes found in data from a study of households living with smart technologies. Using this visual vocabulary …

Chapter Iv — Eurocentric Versus Ethio-Centric Approaches To Ethiopia’S Modernization Lag: The Concept Of Derailment, Messay Kebede
Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments
After studying the link between survival and modernization, the next logical step is to provide concrete answers to the question of why Ethiopia’s impressive record of survival failed to initiate a successful process of modernization. In fact, the greater the resolution to survive, the more determined should have been the drive toward modernization. Yet, not only is Ethiopia still ranked among the poorest countries, but it is also entangled in numerous internal conflicts, the primary consequence of which is an unending political instability threatening its very existence. However, before delving into the reasons for the Ethiopian failure to modernize, we …

Energy savings are a major goal in our lives because energy consumption is continuously increasing. We have studied in this paper four air conditioning systems, so that each system mainly consists of a vapor compression cycle and a rotating desiccant wheel. The thermodynamic analysis for air conditioning system, the heat exchanger, the ground heat exchanger and the evaporative water spray cooler were presented. Design and operating parameters including outlet air temperature, outlet air humidity, regeneration air temperature, and desiccant wheel speed are studied to assess its effect on the performance of the systems considered. This hybrid system significantly decreases the …

Active Analysis In The Beginning Acting Classroom, Michael Shipley
Active Analysis In The Beginning Acting Classroom, Michael Shipley
Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Often, the exercises in the acting classroom can feel at odds with the processes used in the rehearsal room. I believe Konstantin Stanislavsky’s rehearsal method of Active Analysis provides tools and perspectives for dealing with these challenges. At The S Word Symposium in November 2022, I outlined a process I developed for teaching beginning acting using principles of Active Analysis as a tool to bridge the gap between training and rehearsing. This article outlines the experiences and thought processes that went into creating this class structure and reviews the benefits for students. Applied in this way, Stanislavsky’s impulse to place …
