In The Name Of The People: From Thai-Style Democracy To Thailism Democracy, Qiang Zhang
In The Name Of The People: From Thai-Style Democracy To Thailism Democracy, Qiang Zhang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Existing studies have often situated Thailand within the context of the global middle class's retreat from democracy to understand democratization in Thailand. However, this approach fails to account adequately for the oscillating behavior of the Thai middle class between support for and opposition to democracy. This study argues that analyses of democratization benchmarked against Western democracy have long ignored changes in power structures and ideological discourses within Thailand's conservative forces. Therefore, this study undertakes a longitudinal analysis of Thai-style democracy, which has featured an anti-democratic face since 1932. By analyzing the discourses of conservative forces in three different historical periods—1932-1957, …

Expression Of Proteins Mediating Pulmonary Hypertension In Dogs Affected With Degenerative Mitral Valve Disease, Siriwan Sakarin
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is defined by an abnormal elevation in pressure within pulmonary vasculature, often associated with degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) in dogs. While histopathological changes in the pulmonary arteries, known as pulmonary arterial remodeling, have been documented in human patients with PH, these alterations in DMVD dogs with PH have not been published. Proteomics, a potent method for exploring the entire protein complement of a biological sample, has emerged as a valuable tool for identifying PH-specific proteins, potentially serving as biomarkers for diagnosis and enhancing understanding of PH pathogenesis in DMVD dogs. This study aimed to evaluate the …

Free-of-charge publicly available optical satellite imagery can now be used to provide short-term to multi-decadal shoreline satellite-derived shoreline(SDS) data, with errors typically under 10 m on microtidal beaches. However, SDSaccuracy dramatically worsens at high-energy and/or meso to macrotidal lowgradient beaches, which challenges a robust assessment of shoreline variability and trends. In this contribution we demonstrate that, on such beaches, water level (tide + runup) correction and/or an adapted space-averaging of uncorrected (noisy) SDS dataset can substantially reduce uncertainties and thus allow addressing the timeand space variability of shoreline change and their primary drivers.

Coastal Typologies To Support Coastal Change Adaptation Management: A Study Of The South West Coast Of England, Ja Kirby, G Masselink, T Poate, T Scott
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Sea-level rise, increased coastal erosion and flooding due to climate change is threatening coastal communities across the world. Globally, coastal change management policies include zonation of the coast to restrict development in areas susceptible to coastal change. Defining the extent of the coastal change area can be problematic and is often done using large-scale (>1 km) coastal classifications and estimates of coastal retreat. In this study, we investigate the south west coast of England, using a high-resolution (0.1 km) coastal classification to determine coastal types and their response to sea-level rise. Nine coastal typologies were defined in the study …

Earth observation (EO) coupled with novel image analysis techniques have demonstrated the potential of EO for long-term, local, regional, and even global scale investigations of shoreline change. However, satellite-derived shoreline (SDS) data is associated with large uncertainties relating to environmental factors, tidal range, and wave action among other factors. This contribution investigates the impacts of morphological and hydrodynamic setting on the accuracy of SDS in macrotidal, highenergy coasts. Results revealed significant differences in SDS accuracy between the two morphologically contrasting sites in terms of the level of error and the optimal water level correction. We show that SDS accuracy at …

Interconnection schemes are ubiquitous in physical systems. For instance, in multi-domain systems consisting of interconnected subsystems from different physical domains. Furthermore, the interconnection of two or more systems has also been exploited to analyze and control dynamical systems, especially passive ones. To this end, the most common interconnection structure is the negative feedback interconnection. However, this approach is unsuitable to directly couple the states of the subsystems in the overall system’s energy as customarily occurs in physical systems. This letter provides two interconnection approaches that overcome this issue. Notably, it is shown that these interconnection structures are suitable for decomposing …

Digital polymerase chain reaction (dPCR) is an emerging technique for the absolute quantification of target nucleic acids. dPCR got attention as a precise quantification tool in preclinical research, particularly when used to detect genetic mutations and result in highly precise measurements. In dPCR, the statistic of Poisson distribution was followed for the random distribution of molecules in different partitions, which is essential for dPCR quantification. Amplified target sequences in different partitions are identified by fluorescence and each partition functions as a separate PCR microreactor. Without the need for calibration, the percentage of PCR-positive partitions is sufficient to estimate the concentration …

Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics For Modelling Cold-Water Coral Habitats In Changing Oceans, Konstantinos Georgoulas, Sebastian Hennige, Yeaw Chu Lee
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
The importance of the growth, proliferation and longevity of reef-forming cold-water corals is paramount as they support various complex bio-diverse habitats and provide many essential ecosystem services. These cold-water coral reefs consist of layers of living coral tissue that grow on top of large masses of coral skeleton. Here, the Goldilocks Principle is used to simulate growth in optimal conditions and model how cold-water corals engineer their habitat to survive and prosper. A computational fluid dynamics model is created based on the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics method, a mesh-free Lagrangian numerical method. The SPH solver is written in the C++ programming …

Voyage Data Recorders (VDR) or 'black boxes' for ships hold critical navigational and sensor data that can be used as evidence in an investigation. These systems have proven extremely useful in determining the cause of several previous shipping accidents. Considering the importance of the VDR and the increasing number of cyber-attacks in the maritime sector, the likelihood of it being attacked is high. This paper examines the security and accessibility of VDR data through a malicious USB device. A USB device is used after a series of tests, detailed in this paper, found it to be a viable way to …

Marine Environmental Effects On A Graphene Reinforced Epoxy Adhered Single Lap Joint Between Metals And Cfrp, Rudi Fry-Taylor, Maozhou Meng, Xinyu Wang
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
This study investigates the marine environmental effects on the bonding strength of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) reinforced adhesive for a metal/composite single lap joint. Samples were immersed for periods of 1, 2 and 3 weeks in a 50 °C, 3.5% NaCl solution, with the purpose of the heat being the creation of an environment in which simulated an increased ageing period in the joint structure. In a dry condition, the use of GNPs produced a slight increase in lap shear strength of 17% and 14% in the carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) composite laminate to aluminium and stainless-steel joints respectively. Post …

Waterbodies’ thermal energy potential, as a green, renewable, and limitless source of energy, can be exploited in response to the growing energy demands of islands and coastal cities. Up to now, the technologies that have been developed for this purpose include seawater air-conditioning, surface water heat pump, and ocean energy thermal conversion systems or their combinations, which are presented here as Waterbodies Thermal Energy Based Systems (WTEBSs). The growth and development of these technologies raise concerns regarding their potential impacts on sustainability of the marine environment. The present work provides a comprehensive review of the available literature and state-of-the-art technologies …

A preregistered meta-analysis, including 244 effect sizes from 85 field audits and 361,645 individual job applications, tested for gender bias in hiring practices in female-stereotypical and gender-balanced as well as male-stereotypical jobs from 1976 to 2020. A “red team” of independent experts was recruited to increase the rigor and robustness of our meta-analytic approach. A forecasting survey further examined whether laypeople (n = 499 nationally representative adults) and scientists (n = 312) could predict the results. Forecasters correctly anticipated reductions in discrimination against female candidates over time. However, both scientists and laypeople overestimated the continuation of bias against female candidates. …

The effect of chemical pollution on the microbiomes of wildlife has been given little attention. A new concept is emerging where microbiomes are vital to host animal or plant health, and for ecosystems. Data are mainly on mammals, birds, and fish. Changing environmental conditions (e.g., salinity, pH, season) and exposure to chemicals alter the composition of gill, gut and skin microbiomes. Gut microbiomes are also modulated by diet, and exposure to chemicals including metals, nanomaterials, fungicides or microplastics. However, a change in the microbiome does not necessarily infer adverse effects on the host, with some evidence of co-adaptation. Environmental risk …
