Fertility In Chin State, Myanmar: An Insight From Demographic And Health Survey, Win Zaw Myo
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Chin State has one of the highest fertility rates in Myanmar, which imposes significant pressure on both families and the state's resources. This study investigates the socio-economic factors influencing the number of children ever born (CEB) among ever-married women in Chin State, Myanmar. Using a subsample of 392 women aged 30 years and above from the female samples in Chin State in the Myanmar Demographic and Health Survey (MDHS), data were analyzed through five Poisson regression models. The findings indicate that older women tend to have more children. Women residing in rural areas show higher CEB compared to their urban …

In The Name Of The People: From Thai-Style Democracy To Thailism Democracy, Qiang Zhang
In The Name Of The People: From Thai-Style Democracy To Thailism Democracy, Qiang Zhang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Existing studies have often situated Thailand within the context of the global middle class's retreat from democracy to understand democratization in Thailand. However, this approach fails to account adequately for the oscillating behavior of the Thai middle class between support for and opposition to democracy. This study argues that analyses of democratization benchmarked against Western democracy have long ignored changes in power structures and ideological discourses within Thailand's conservative forces. Therefore, this study undertakes a longitudinal analysis of Thai-style democracy, which has featured an anti-democratic face since 1932. By analyzing the discourses of conservative forces in three different historical periods—1932-1957, …

Challenges Of An Implementation And Enforcement Of Child Safety Seat Law In Thailand, Narisara Pan-Ngam
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
In Thailand, car accidents are the second leading cause of death among children. According to the Child Safety Promotion and Injury Prevention Research Center (CSIP), in 2019, automobile accidents killed approximately 2500 children aged 1 to 14 years old per year, or 250 children each month on average. Most of the children who died in auto accidents were not wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.Generally, essential safety devices in the car are seatbelts and airbags, which will protect the passengers from fatal injuries when the car crashes. Unfortunately, seatbelt only grants the appropriate protection for adult passengers …

Applied Environmental Research
As developing dynamic regions, coastal areas have a high potential for environmental incidents, especially chemical spills, which may permanently threaten livelihoods and coastal ecosystems. Establishing an appropriate methodological framework for assessing environmental incidents in coastal areas, ensuring increased predictability and minimising potential consequences is a trend of interest to scientists. In this study, the environmental risk assessment model was applied to develop a framework for assessing environmental incidents in coastal areas due to chemical spills from the mainland based on hazard, exposure and vulnerability factors (i.e., sensitivity and adaptability). Using the multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) method approach, suitable criteria, their …

Voyage Data Recorders (VDR) or 'black boxes' for ships hold critical navigational and sensor data that can be used as evidence in an investigation. These systems have proven extremely useful in determining the cause of several previous shipping accidents. Considering the importance of the VDR and the increasing number of cyber-attacks in the maritime sector, the likelihood of it being attacked is high. This paper examines the security and accessibility of VDR data through a malicious USB device. A USB device is used after a series of tests, detailed in this paper, found it to be a viable way to …

School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Increasing levels of Artificial Light At Night (ALAN) alter the natural diel cycles of organisms at global scale. ALAN constitutes a potential threat to the light-dependent functioning of symbiotic scleractinian corals, the habit-founders of warm, shallow water reefs. Here, we show that ALAN disrupts the natural diel tentacle expansion and contraction behaviour, a key mechanism for prey capture and nutrient acquisition in corals. We exposed four symbiotic scleractinian coral species to different ALAN treatments (0.4–2.5 μmol quanta m−2 s−1). Exposure to ALAN levels of 1.2 μmol quanta m−2 s−1 and above altered the normal tentacle expansion response in diurnal species …

Ignorance And Cultural Diversity: The Ethical Obligations Of The Behavior Analyst, Alejandro Arango
Philosophy Faculty Scholarship
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) has featured an increasing concern for understanding and considering the cultural diversity of the populations behavior analysts serve in recent years. As an expression of that concern, the new BACB’s Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts is more explicit and comprehensive in its inclusion of ethical obligations concerning cultural diversity. The purpose of this paper is to offer a discussion on the limitations of both our capacity and willingness to know and overcome our ignorance about our own and other cultures. We examine different ways in which our ignorance of other cultures plays out even in willful …

Returning Home: Collective Dwelling Through Incremental Architecure, Zachary C. Nelson
Architecture Theses
Thomas Moore defined home at three scales: the psyche which shelters our souls, the physical place that we make domesticity in, and the broader metaphysical context in which we find our culture, history, and selves within. Today however, housing in the United States is birthed by economic interests, creating modernized "units" that are detached from humanity and the way we dwell. Consequently, the "American Dream" for new generations has been disintegrated, and our built environment has lost its ability to relate to the broader contexts of our lives. To combat the consequences of an inflating housing market, the federal government …

This thesis outlines the Navy’s movement towards black inclusion from the beginning of World War I to the end of World War II through the lens of African American Seabees as well as the two integrated Seabee Battalions, 34th and 80th. The scriptures consistently depict the significance of sacred space and sacred time in the lives of the Lord’s covenant people. Sacred time is still experienced today, as in the past, through commemorations and celebrations on specific days that are dedicated to God and thus regarded as holy. These days punctuate the passing of ordinary or common time and are intended to help bring focus and clarity to relationships with the divine.

The use of legislative histories under intentionalist/purposivist theories of statutory interpretation is frequently criticized because it can be easily biased (see, e.g., Scheppele, 2012). The original meaning of words or phrases is often in dispute in Founding Era legislation, especially the US Constitution. The Corpus of Founding Era American English (COFEA) accurately provides evidence for the meaning of contested terms during the Founding Era. COFEA consists of 126,394 texts and over 136 million words. This corpus has been and is being used by legal researchers and interpreters in scholarly research as well as various courts, including the Supreme Court. This paper describes the motivation for the creation of COFEA and describes the process of designing and collecting the corpus.
