Alfaro V. State Of Nevada, 139 Nev. Adv. Op. 24 (Aug. 24, 2023), Ciara Clark

Nevada Supreme Court Summaries

The Nevada Supreme Court upheld Alfaro's convictions on seven counts of sexual assault and two counts of lewdness with a minor under the age of 14. Alfaro challenged the sufficiency of the evidence and argued that some counts were redundant and cited evidentiary and jury instruction errors. The Court reversed one conviction for lewdness as redundant and remanded for correction of the judgment. The Court upheld Alfaro’s remaining nine convictions, deeming there was adequate evidence to support the charges.

Factors Affecting California Grassland Biodiversity: Two Case Studies, Nora Bales Sep 2023

Factors Affecting California Grassland Biodiversity: Two Case Studies, Nora Bales

Master's Theses

Biodiversity loss over the last century has been significant and is projected to increase. Biodiversity loss is accelerating due to climate change and habitat loss and degradation. Biodiversity supports key ecosystem services including pollination services, climate regulation, and water filtration. Biodiversity conservation is a top priority for land managers and researchers, however many ecological studies with practical applications lack a thorough understanding of the soil environment in their study system. We conducted two case studies integrating soil and plant data to answer management questions. The first case study investigated the relationship between a threatened plant, Hooveria purpurea var. purpurea and …

Art Conservation Master's Projects

The medicinal contents found within a mid-1800’s saddlebag were investigated using multimodal imaging techniques, micro-transmission Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (transFTIR), pyrolysis Gas Chromatography Mass Spectroscopy (pyGCMS), X- Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF), Raman Spectroscopy and the reference collection of the SUNY Buffalo State Eckert Herbarium. Housed within glass vials and paper packets, the medicinal samples from seventeen different containers were analyzed and their results compared with historical references. Medicines with probable identification were found to be of both mineral and botanical origins: mercurous chloride, lead acetate, magnesium carbonate, iron oxides, gum arabic, ground croton seeds, benzoin resin, Fabaceae senna and Arctostaphylos …

Quality Management And Oversight Of Texas Forensic Science Service Providers, Sarah P. Chu Sep 2023

Quality Management And Oversight Of Texas Forensic Science Service Providers, Sarah P. Chu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Forensic science oversight in the U.S. largely relies upon voluntary third-party forensic laboratory accreditation programs. Without a national system of regulation and given the highly fragmented local systems of control, few forensic science service providers (FSSPs) are subject to regulatory oversight beyond their third-party accreditors. Texas is unique in its establishment of a robust statewide oversight system and a strong governmental culture of transparency, permitting this study of forensic quality management. This study consisted of two parts. The first part of this dissertation characterized and analyzed quality incident reports (QIRs) published by the Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Laboratory …

Effects Of Genes And Gene-Environment Interactions On Work-Family Conflict And Enrichment, Peter Yu Sep 2023

Effects Of Genes And Gene-Environment Interactions On Work-Family Conflict And Enrichment, Peter Yu

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how macro-level issues can influence how we manage work and family responsibilities. Yet, work-family (WF) research at different levels of analysis is relatively scarce. To address this, I take a multilevel lens to study WF conflict and enrichment in the context of micro-level factors (in the form of genes), macro-level factors (in the form of family and community-level demands), and their cross-level interactions (i.e., gene–environment interactions). To study genetic main effects, I drew from the work-home resources model to identify four candidate genes associated with conditions that could impact the ability to accrue WF resources …

Sex In The Noisy City: Changes In Vocal Behavior Patterns And Dopamine Neurochemistry In The Auditory System Of Oyster Toadfish (Opsanus Tau), Kelsey N. Hom Sep 2023

Sex In The Noisy City: Changes In Vocal Behavior Patterns And Dopamine Neurochemistry In The Auditory System Of Oyster Toadfish (Opsanus Tau), Kelsey N. Hom

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

Intense anthropogenic noise can induce stress, behavioral changes, and even hearing loss in aquatic animals. However, there are few studies that have demonstrated how ecologically relevant noise affects aquatic life, and even fewer studies on the effect of noise on animals that require sound for reproduction. The oyster toadfish (Opsanus tau) is an excellent animal model to examine the effects of anthropogenic noise on behavior and neurochemistry since they use a reproductive call to find mates and live near urban areas like New York City. Despite living alongside the most populous city in the United States, these vocal …

Multi-Year Time Series Reveals Temporally Synchronous Diatom Communities With Annual Frequency Of Recurrence In A Temperate Estuary, Diana N. Fontaine, Tatiana A. Rynearson

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Diatoms are among the most abundant phytoplankton that inhabit coastal ecosystems, forming large blooms that fuel coastal food webs. Although diatoms are often large and morphologically distinct, many are small or morphologically cryptic making it difficult to understand the temporal dynamics of whole diatom communities and the environmental factors that drive them. Here, we investigated diatom diversity and its environmental correlates using 6 yr of monthly surface water samples from the Narragansett Bay Plankton Time Series to investigate the seasonal and annual variability of diatom species occurrence. High-throughput amplicon sequencing of filtered biomass yielded 658 diatom amplicon sequence variants (ASVs), …

Integrating Current Analyses Of The Breast Cancer Microbiome, Sidra Sohail, Michael B. Burns Sep 2023

Integrating Current Analyses Of The Breast Cancer Microbiome, Sidra Sohail, Michael B. Burns

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Many cancer types have significant associations with their resident microbial communities —emerging evidence suggests that breast cancers also interact with the local tissue-associated microbiota. Microbiome research advances rapidly and analysis pipelines and databases are updated frequently. This dynamic environment makes comparative evaluations challenging. Here, we have integrated all publicly available studies related to breast cancer and the mammary microbiome in light of advances in this rapidly progressing field. Based on alpha diversity, beta diversity, proportional abundance, and statistical analyses, we observed differences between our modern analytical approaches and the original findings. We were able to classify and identify additional taxa …

Which Environmental Social Work? Environmentalisms, Social Justice, And The Dilemmas Ahead, John Mathias, Amy Krings, Samantha Teixeira

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

Social work has traditionally been concerned with the welfare of humans, a mission that some scholars want to expand to include other beings. How can concern for nonhumans and the natural environment best be integrated with the profession’s commitment to social justice? Although commentators have made several proposals, few have critically examined the dilemmas or trade-offs that may await a more expansive social work. Examining such challenges in environmental movements past and present, we identify three logics by which some varieties of environmentalism have perpetuated inequity among humans. We then explore how diverse movements for environmental justice—which make equity among …

Small Grant: Black-Billed Cuckoos (Bbcu), Erim Gomez Sep 2023

Small Grant: Black-Billed Cuckoos (Bbcu), Erim Gomez

University Grant Program Reports

Black-billed Cuckoos (BBCU) are believed to be experiencing population declines and are recognized as a Species of Concern by Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks (FWP). Further, FWP has designated BBCUs as a species of research priority. However, the study of BBCU presents challenges since they are hard to detect through traditional avian research methods. Their reluctance to fly, move, or vocalize in the presence of humans hinders surveying and research, thereby complicating the development of evidence-based management strategies. A potential solution to this challenge is using Autonomous Recording Units (ARUs) - small, affordable, and programmable audio recording devices proven useful …

Mono-allelic germline disruptions of the transcription factor GATA2 result in a propensity for developing myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), affecting more than 85% of carriers. How a partial loss of GATA2 functionality enables leukemic transformation years later is unclear. This question has remained unsolved mainly due to the lack of informative models, as Gata2 heterozygote mice do not develop hematologic malignancies. Here we show that two different germline Gata2 mutations (TgErg/Gata2het and TgErg/Gata2L359V) accelerate AML in mice expressing the human hematopoietic stem cell regulator ERG. Analysis of Erg/Gata2het fetal liver and bone marrow-derived hematopoietic cells revealed a …

Worth A Pound Of Cure? Emerging Strategies And Challenges In Cancer Immunoprevention, Saurav D Haldar, Eduardo Vilar, Anirban Maitra, Neeha Zaidi

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Cancer immunoprevention applies immunologic approaches such as vaccines to prevent, rather than to treat or cure, cancer. Despite limited success in the treatment of advanced disease, the development of cancer vaccines to intercept premalignant states is a promising area of current research. These efforts are supported by the rationale that vaccination in the premalignant setting is less susceptible to mechanisms of immune evasion compared with established cancer. Prophylactic vaccines have already been developed for a minority of cancers mediated by oncogenic viruses (e.g., hepatitis B and human papillomavirus). Extending the use of preventive vaccines to non-virally driven malignancies remains an …

Pneumonia is a worldwide threat, making discovery of novel means to combat lower respiratory tract infection an urgent need. Manipulating the lungs' intrinsic host defenses by therapeutic delivery of certain pathogen-associated molecular patterns protects mice against pneumonia in a reactive oxygen species (ROS)-dependent manner. Here we show that antimicrobial ROS are induced from lung epithelial cells by interactions of CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) with mitochondrial voltage-dependent anion channel 1 (VDAC1). The ODN-VDAC1 interaction alters cellular ATP/ADP/AMP localization, increases delivery of electrons to the electron transport chain (ETC), increases mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm), differentially modulates ETC complex activities and consequently results in …

Wastewater surveillance has proved to be a valuable tool to track the COVID-19 pandemic. However, most studies using wastewater surveillance data revolve around establishing correlations and lead time relative to reported case data. In this perspective, we advocate for the integration of wastewater surveillance data with dynamic within-host and between-host models to better understand, monitor, and predict viral disease outbreaks. Dynamic models overcome emblematic difficulties of using wastewater surveillance data such as establishing the temporal viral shedding profile. Complementarily, wastewater surveillance data bypasses the issues of time lag and underreporting in clinical case report data, thus enhancing the utility and …

Increased rates of clinically significant bleeding have been reported with ibrutinib, however, limited data is available on the risk when given with concomitant therapeutic anticoagulation. We analyzed the incidence of major bleeding in 64 patient exposures that received ibrutinib with concomitant therapeutic anticoagulation. Major bleeding was observed in 5/64 (8%) patient exposures. The highest incidence was observed with rivaroxaban (3/17, 18%), followed by apixaban (2/35, 6%). No major bleeding events were seen with enoxaparin (n = 10). A total of 38% of patient exposures received a concomitant antiplatelet agent along with therapeutic anticoagulation. Among these patients, one (4%) experienced …

The mechanisms of particle-induced pathogenesis in the lung remain poorly understood. Neutrophilic inflammation and oxidative stress in the lung are hallmarks of toxicity. Some investigators have postulated that oxidative stress from particle surface reactive oxygen species (psROS) on the dust produces the toxicopathology in the lungs of dust-exposed animals. This postulate was tested concurrently with the studies to elucidate the toxicity of lunar dust (LD), which is believed to contain psROS due to high-speed micrometeoroid bombardment that fractured and pulverized lunar surface regolith. Results from studies of rats intratracheally instilled (ITI) with three LDs (prepared from an Apollo-14 lunar regolith), …
