Little data is available regarding the incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding in adults hospitalized with COVID-19 infection and the influence of patient comorbidities and demographics, COVID-19 therapies, and typical medications used. In this retrospective study, we utilized the National COVID Cohort Collaborative to investigate the primary outcome of the development of gastrointestinal bleeding in 512 467 hospitalized US adults (age >18 years) within 14 days of a COVID-19 infection and the influence of demographics, comorbidities, and selected medications. Gastrointestinal bleeding developed in 0.44% of patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Comorbidities associated with gastrointestinal bleeding include peptic ulcer disease (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] …

Impossibility Of Emergent Works’ Protection In U.S. And Eu Copyright Law, Matt Blaszczyk Oct 2023

Impossibility Of Emergent Works’ Protection In U.S. And Eu Copyright Law, Matt Blaszczyk

Fellow, Adjunct, Lecturer, and Research Scholar Works

Protection of emergent works is impossible. Without an author, there is no expression of ideas which can be original, and thus no copyrightable work. Indeed, the whole system of copyright law, its conceptual building blocks of idea-expression dichotomy, originality, authorship, and the concept of a protectable work operate in the notation of human creativity. Emergent works fall outside of copyright’s positive ontology, being akin to ideas, facts, or subject-matter predicated by technical considerations, rather than authorial creativity. In other words, they do not exist as things in law and thus cannot as such be owned. Rather, like any idea, they …

Sexual Risk-Taking Behavior Amongst Emerging Adults In A Tertiary Institution Of Learning In Coastal Kenya: A Qualitative Study Of Stakeholders’ Perspectives Using Causal Loop Mapping, Stevenson K. Chea, Vincent A. Kagonya, Eunice A. Oyugi, Carophine Nasambu, Isaac Menza, Fauz Ibrahim, Osman Abdullahi, Alice Anika, Amin S. Hassan, Amina Abubakar

Institute for Human Development, East Africa

Background It is known from previous studies that university students in sub-Saharan Africa (sSA) engage in sexual risk-taking behaviour (SRTB). However, there is paucity of data on factors contributing to SRTB among university students (emerging adults) at the Kenyan Coast thus hindering intervention planning. This study seeks to provide an in-depth qualitative understanding of the factors contributing to SRTB and their interconnectedness among university students at the Kenyan Coast combining qualitative research with a systems thinking approach.

Methods Using the ecological model, and employing in-depth interviews, we explored the perceptions of twenty-six key informants (twenty-one emerging adults and five other …

Campus Building, Shilo Virginia Previti, Grant Mcmillan, Samuel Amendolar

Digital Press Books

This book celebrates Merrifield Hall on the campus of the University of North Dakota. This century-old building is now enduring a radical renovation designed to keep it relevant for the next generation of students on the UND campus.

The editors’ goal with this book was both to respect Merrifield Hall’s past and look forward to its now in-process future. It is our hope that this book will offer a space of thoughts, memories, fragments, criticisms, and jokes for all those who have walked the halls of this building and for all those who may one day dance—intellectually and materially—its halls, …

Adults' Subjective Experiences Of Exploitation In South Africa, Fatiema Benjamin, Rachel Chinyakata Dr, Edna Grace Rich Professor, Erica Koegler Professor, Nicolette Vanessa Roman Professor Oct 2023

Adults' Subjective Experiences Of Exploitation In South Africa, Fatiema Benjamin, Rachel Chinyakata Dr, Edna Grace Rich Professor, Erica Koegler Professor, Nicolette Vanessa Roman Professor

Dignity: A Journal of Analysis of Exploitation and Violence

The exploitation of people in the environments in which they live and work continues to be a challenge globally despite efforts by stakeholders at national and international levels to bring this to a halt. Exploitation has both short-term and long-term impacts on the lives of the survivors. Attention should be given to preventing new incidents and addressing ongoing exploitation. However, there is a lack of research that focuses on the subjective experiences of different forms of exploitation within the Western Cape, South Africa. Therefore, this paper explores individuals’ experiences of being exploited, focusing on the types of exploitative situations participants …

Matter Of Will Of Ratcliff And The Not-So-Harmless Error: A Call To Change Mississippi’S Approach To Will Formalities, Kelsi Baldwin Oct 2023

Matter Of Will Of Ratcliff And The Not-So-Harmless Error: A Call To Change Mississippi’S Approach To Will Formalities, Kelsi Baldwin

MC Law Review

A will provides a mechanism to dispose of property at death. But costly litigation—or worse, a will’s invalidation—often thwart this purpose. The law of probate is state-specific, which leaves jurisdictions with the burden of ensuring that their laws promote rather than defeat the purpose of probate—to honor the testator’s intent. Mississippi attempts to recognize this purpose by requiring strict compliance with the statutory requirements for creating a will. This “better safe than sorry” approach errs on the side of invalidity with the hope that denying a non-compliant instrument for probate will prevent fraud and other wrongdoing.

Despite its intention, Mississippi’s …

The Euroweek Experience: Supporting Sustainable Development Through Academic Programs Promoting Student Research, Technology Innovation And The Commercialization Process, Meryl Rosenblatt, Ishita Sharma, Mya Ferreiro

Business: Faculty Presentations

University-based research continues to rely on industry partnerships to help support the innovation, exchange and application of new technologies. At the same time, University R&D has increasingly focused on technologies that support a wide range of environmental, societal and economic Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) launched by the United Nations in 2015. This has put a spotlight on the need to address technology transfer from the university to industry, where the university often lacks the resources needed to assess the feasibility of market adoption of new technologies. Recent literature indicates that there is a role for the international academic community to …

The Consequences Of Gender-Affirming Care: A Survey Of U.S. And U.K. Law, Caroline Hoch Oct 2023

The Consequences Of Gender-Affirming Care: A Survey Of U.S. And U.K. Law, Caroline Hoch

The International Law Review Association Student Forum

The prevalence of youth experiencing “gender dysphoria” over the last decade has exploded. More minors than ever before are identifying as a different gender than their biological sex. Yet, there is a divergence among nations regarding what care is best for minors questioning their gender identity. The United Kingdom has begun to move away from prescribing minors puberty blockers and hormone therapies, as the federal government in the United States seeks to protect and promote gender-affirming care for youth. The response among the states is far more fractured. Some states have imposed bans on gender-affirming care for minors. While there …

Malware Pattern Of Life Analysis, Mar Castro Oct 2023

Malware Pattern Of Life Analysis, Mar Castro

Masters Theses & Doctoral Dissertations

Many malware classifications include viruses, worms, trojans, ransomware, bots, adware, spyware, rootkits, file-less downloaders, malvertising, and many more. Each type may share unique behavioral characteristics with its methods of operations (MO), a pattern of behavior so distinctive that it could be recognized as having the same creator. The research shows the extraction of malware methods of operation using the step-by-step process of Artificial-Based Intelligence (ABI) with built-in Density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) machine learning to quantify the actions for their similarities, differences, baseline behaviors, and anomalies. The collected data of the research is from the ransomware sample …

An Exploration Of Trauma-Inclusive Pedagogy And Students’ Perceptions Of Academic Success, R. Jason Lynch, Krista Wojdak Oct 2023

An Exploration Of Trauma-Inclusive Pedagogy And Students’ Perceptions Of Academic Success, R. Jason Lynch, Krista Wojdak

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

While trauma-inclusive approaches to student learning have been well documented in K–12 contexts, postsecondary education has done little to incorporate trauma-inclusive pedagogy into college classrooms. Using a sample (n = 529) of graduate and undergraduate students at a public rural-serving regional serving university, this study aims to explore differences in students’ perception of academic success in courses where trauma-inclusive practices were used and courses where these practices were not. Findings provide evidence that students felt more successful in courses where trauma-inclusive practices were used. Additionally, researchers were able to demonstrate that differences in perceptions of success were more pronounced …

Exploring The Impact Of Student-Faculty Partnership Program At A Hispanic Serving Institution, Alyssa Guadalupe Cavazos, Lesley Chapa, Javier Cavazos-Vela

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

Guided by a strength-based framework and counter-storying lens, we use a qualitative case study approach (Cook-Sather, 2020; Cook-Sather and Motz-Storey, 2016; Lechuga-Peña and Lechuga, 2018) to explore students’ and instructors’ experiences with a students as learners and teachers (SaLT) partnership program at a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI). This study includes five students and five faculty members who participated in the student-faculty partnership program. Data collection involved student partners’ self-assessment reflections and faculty members’ pre- and post-program reflections on their experiences. Several themes were identified following a phenomenological analysis of students’ and faculty partners’ self-reflections. Themes emerging from student participants included …

Meanings Of Community: Educational Developers Experience Care, Satisfying Contributions, And Belonging In A Collaboration Across Institutions, Thomas M. Colclough, William J. Howitz, Daniel Mann, Katherine Kearns, Darren S. Hoffmann

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

We share insights from a mixed methods study to describe the experience of educational developers participating in a community of practice (CoP). This CoP consisted of 19 leaders at eight institutions, serving collectively as facilitators of a hybrid, across-institutional, seven-week workshop series on course design for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars. From results of a survey examining the functional and sustaining features of the community, we illustrate that members experience the community aspect of our CoP primarily as a sense of satisfaction/personal fulfillment and, to an extent, in the effectiveness/productiveness of collaborations between members. Members of our CoP experience several …

Writing Communities To (Re-)Engage Faculty: The U See I Write Initiative, Ilona S. Yim, Nina Bandelj, Olga V. Razorenova, Peiyi Wang

To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development

The COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll on university faculty, unduly those from underrepresented groups, causing many faculty to disengage. Writing communities represent a promising tool to (re-)engage faculty and build an inclusive climate. As part of U See I Write, a faculty development initiative at the University of California, Irvine, we convened a series of monthly writing retreats between March and June of 2021, with between-retreat weekly writing sessions in smaller groups and an expectation to write daily for at least 30 minutes. In a diverse cohort of 34 faculty writers, program participation resulted in a significant increase in …

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objective: Sarcopenia is a frequently observed comorbidity of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) due to the chronic activation of the innate immune system. Accumulating evidence has indicated that Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) safely suppresses proinflammatory pathways and controls inflammation-associated disease, but its effect in reducing the risk of developing sarcopenia among RA subjects has not been established. We conducted a population-level cohort study to compare the sarcopenia risk in patients with RA who use or do not use CHM. Methods: Using claims from a nationwide insurance database, we recruited patients with newly diagnosed RA and without sarcopenia between 2002 and 2010. Propensity …

Faculty and Staff Publications

Objectives: Although hospital chaplains play a critical role in delivering emotional and spiritual care to a broad range of both religious and non-religious patients, there is remarkably little research on the best practices or "active ingredients" of chaplain spiritual consults. Here, we examined how chaplains' compassion capacity was associated with their linguistic behavior with hospitalized inpatients, and how their language in turn related to patient outcomes.

Methods: Hospital chaplains (n = 16) completed self-report measures that together were operationalized as self-reported "compassion capacity." Next, chaplains conducted consultations with inpatients (n = 101) in five hospitals. Consultations were audio-recorded, …

Using CRISPR to Generate Integrated Ssa4-GFP Reporter Strains

Emma Norman, Rebecca Adams, PhD

Proteins play critical roles in numerous cellular processes. In order to synthesize these important molecules in eukaryotes, DNA is first transcribed into an intermediate molecule, mRNA, in the nucleus. The export of mRNA from its origin in the nucleus to the site of protein production, the cytoplasm, is an integral step in protein synthesis. When a cell is subjected to stress, such as heat shock, most mRNA export is halted, as export proteins are inactivated, and cellular machinery is redirected towards recovery. However, particular transcripts, including the …

Anti-Transgender Legislation In Arizona, Alabama, And Arkansas: Arbitrary Moral Discrimination Masquerading As Child Protection, Austin Hoenig Oct 2023

Anti-Transgender Legislation In Arizona, Alabama, And Arkansas: Arbitrary Moral Discrimination Masquerading As Child Protection, Austin Hoenig

Denver Law Review

The twenty-first century saw rapid positive changes in the perception of the LGBTQIA+ community. However, an onslaught of anti-transgender legislation seeking to criminalize various aspects of transgender existence continues to sweep across the United States. This Comment analyzes laws in Arizona, Alabama, and Arkansas that target transgender children. The Comment posits that these laws are not effective as to their stated purposes of child protection. It also argues that the laws are facially discriminatory because they inexplicably consider transgender regret but ignore cisgender regret and disallow transgender affirmation but allow cisgender affirmation. The Comment goes on to argue that the …
