Role Of G1p3-Rab5 Interaction In Breast Cancer Gene Expression, Madelyn Terrell Oct 2023

Role Of G1p3-Rab5 Interaction In Breast Cancer Gene Expression, Madelyn Terrell

Honors Theses

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide with millions of cases diagnosed each year. Despite modern treatments, over 40% of patients can expect to relapse after initial cancer eradication. Consequently, it is crucial to unravel the mechanisms by which breast cells confer their cancerous properties to develop novel treatments that improve patient survival. G1P3 is a mitochondrial localized protein found to be upregulated 50x in estrogen receptorpositive breast cancer and is correlated with overall poor patient survival. G1P3-overexpressing cells display increased amounts of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs) and G1P3 as an ISG indicates these genes potential to promote …

Effects Of Changing Climate Extremes And Vegetation Phenology On Wildlife Associated With Grasslands In The Southwestern United States, Tyler G. Creech, Matthew A. Williamson, Steven E. Sesnie, Esther S. Rubin, Daniel R. Cayan, Erica Fleishman

Human-Environment Systems Research Center Faculty Publications and Presentations

Assessments of the potential responses of animal species to climate change often rely on correlations between long-term average temperature or precipitation and species' occurrence or abundance. Such assessments do not account for the potential predictive capacity of either climate extremes and variability or the indirect effects of climate as mediated by plant phenology. By contrast, we projected responses of wildlife in desert grasslands of the southwestern United States to future climate means, extremes, and variability and changes in the timing and magnitude of primary productivity. We used historical climate data and remotely sensed phenology metrics to develop predictive models of …

One-Way Ticket To Mars: The Privatization Of The Space Industry And Its Environmental Impact On Earth And Beyond, Yuree Nam

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

In the 21st century, the space industry has changed from a government-focused practice to a rapidly growing private sector. Billionaires like Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos operate private companies for the advance of space travel and exploration. Other companies like Lunar Outpost, ispace, and Masten Space Systems were selected by NASA to collect lunar resources back in 2020. The concern is that current international space law is insufficient to regulate private actors who play a significant role in exacerbating environmental problems. Whether it be rocket emissions and environmental justice concerns on Earth, or commercial resource extraction in outer space, …

Data was collected along 30 m transects at varying elevations along the shore using quadrants of two sizes: 50x50 cm for …

Soil Succession: Short And Long-Term Impacts Of Grazing On Soil Properties In A Tropical Montane Cloud Forest, June Curtis Oct 2023

Soil Succession: Short And Long-Term Impacts Of Grazing On Soil Properties In A Tropical Montane Cloud Forest, June Curtis

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Cattle ranching is the leading cause of deforestation in South America, causing long-lasting alterations to the continent's landscape and ecology. Tropical montane cloud forests (TMCFs) are a rare ecosystem particularly vulnerable to the effects of land conversion to pasture, a process which has implications ranging from biodiversity loss to soil degradation. Grazing is known to significantly alter soils' physical structure through processes of compaction and erosion as well as significant additions of organic matter. Silvopasture, or the integration of pasture and forest, has emerged as an alternative to traditional grazing practices with the hope of mitigating environmental and soil degradation. …

Faculty Publications

This article provides a fresh perspective on evangelism by reflecting a belief in the Triune God--the source of saving truth and loving community. Mission is part of God’s nature; he is the ultimate Missionary. Mission happens naturally whenever children of God intentionally invite and facilitate God’s presence. Over time, the word “evangelism" has become contaminated by myths, a false understanding of God, and unpleasant religious experiences and practices. Genuine evangelism addresses the most burning issues of people’s lives and should be treated as such. True evangelism involves caring about, praying for, and sharing with people. The practical part of this …

Assessment And Sourcing Of Heavy Metal Contamination Of Middle East Semi-Enclosed Marine Environs Via Near-Shore Sediment Analysis, Abdullah Alnasser Oct 2023

Assessment And Sourcing Of Heavy Metal Contamination Of Middle East Semi-Enclosed Marine Environs Via Near-Shore Sediment Analysis, Abdullah Alnasser

Civil and Environmental Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Heavy metal contamination in the natural world is complex as many metals can be sourced anthropogenically, naturally, or via both vectors. Many heavy metals are known to be toxic, non-biodegradable, and trophic level bio-magnifiers. Therefore, it is important to monitor and study their concentrations, distributions, and processes for transport and sequestration. Near-shore marine sediments act as a sink for heavy metals in the water column due to their physiochemical properties.

In this dissertation’s second chapter, thirty sediment samples from three latitudinally distinct mangrove areas from the Red Sea of Saudi Arabia (near Yanbu, Jeddah, and the Farasan Islands) were analyzed …
