The Influence Of Effluent: Exploring How Wastewater Effluent Impacts Ísafjörður, Iceland, Madi Bennett-Wells Oct 2023

The Influence Of Effluent: Exploring How Wastewater Effluent Impacts Ísafjörður, Iceland, Madi Bennett-Wells

Iceland: Climate Change and The Arctic

Wastewater effluent is of growing concern in communities without proper wastewater treatment plans in place. This study examines the effects that wastewater discharge has on water quality in various communities through field research and an accompanying literature review. Water quality parameters (pH and temperature) were used to determine the impact effluent has on the local harbor, Pollurinn, in Ísafjörður, Iceland. Results showed that there was a statistical significance between pH and the area of study, while temperature was more varied; these results signify that effluent has the biggest impact on the area immediately surrounding the effluent pipe. The literature review …

Bryophyta Sensu Stricto Presence And Function In The Epiphytic Ecosystems Of The Tropical Montane Cloud Forests Of El Valle De Anton, Teaghan Duff Oct 2023

Bryophyta Sensu Stricto Presence And Function In The Epiphytic Ecosystems Of The Tropical Montane Cloud Forests Of El Valle De Anton, Teaghan Duff

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Bryophyta sensu stricto, colloquially known as moss, is often found growing epiphytically in cloud forest ecosystems. Under these conditions, moss may fulfill a secondary foundational species (FS) role, supporting increased habitat for other organisms while remaining dependent on the primary FS host tree. Exploring the dual relationship of moss as both a dependent and supportive organism allows for better understanding of its connective role within ecosystems. Research in the cloud forests of El Valle de Anton focused on relative abundance, environmental surroundings, morphology, and microclimate of mosses to offer baseline data on these connections. Mosses along four different trails within …

Faculty Research 2023

This study investigated the temporal dynamics of childhood sepsis by analyzing gene expression changes associated with proinflammatory processes. Five datasets, including four meningococcal sepsis shock (MSS) datasets (two temporal and two longitudinal) and one polymicrobial sepsis dataset, were selected to track temporal changes in gene expression. Hierarchical clustering revealed three temporal phases: early, intermediate, and late, providing a framework for understanding sepsis progression. Principal component analysis supported the identification of gene expression trajectories. Differential gene analysis highlighted consistent upregulation of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) and nuclear factor κB1 (NFKB1), genes involved in inflammation, across the sepsis datasets. NFKB1 …

Catching Elusive Depression Via Facial Micro-Expression Recognition, Xiaohui Chen, Tony Tie (T.) Luo Oct 2023

Catching Elusive Depression Via Facial Micro-Expression Recognition, Xiaohui Chen, Tony Tie (T.) Luo

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Depression is a common mental health disorder that can cause consequential symptoms with continuously depressed mood that leads to emotional distress. One category of depression is Concealed Depression, where patients intentionally or unintentionally hide their genuine emotions through exterior optimism, thereby complicating and delaying diagnosis and treatment and leading to unexpected suicides. In this article, we propose to diagnose concealed depression by using facial micro-expressions (FMEs) to detect and recognize underlying true emotions. However, the extremely low intensity and subtle nature of FMEs make their recognition a tough task. We propose a facial landmark-based Region-of-Interest (ROI) approach to address the …

Oncology Articles

NPM1 mutated non-AML myeloid neoplasms (MN; T p. L287F; 65%) than frameshift insertion/duplication (35%) with median variant allele frequency (VAF; 9.7%, range 5.1%-49.8%). Mutated NPM1 by IHC showed cytoplasmic positivity in 48% and positivity was associated with higher VAF. The median overall survival (OS) in this cohort was 70 months. Nine patients (26%) progressed to AML. OS in patients who progressed to AML was significantly shorter than the one of patients without progression to AML (OS 20 vs. 128 months, respectively, log rank p = 0.05). NPM1 mutated non-AML MN patients commonly had cytopenias, dysplasia, normal karyotype, mutations in multiple …

Raman Spectral Cytopathology For Cancer Diagnostic Applications, Fiona Lyng, Damian Traynor, Isha Behl, Declan O'Dea, Hugh Byrne

Books/Book Chapters

Histopathology is currently regarded as the “gold standard” patient sampling technique for cancer diagnostics. It involves extraction of a tissue sample, or biopsy, which is then sectioned and stained for evaluation by a pathologist [1]. Cytopathology, on the other hand, is the field of disease diagnosis at the cellular level [2], necessitating only the microscopic evaluation of samples of cells which can be harvested by less invasive methods such as exfoliative brushing, needle probes or from biofluids. Based on the identification of abnormalities in cellular appearance, cytopathology is currently widely used to aid in the screening of cancer, as well …

Distinct Roles Of Estrone And Estradiol In Endothelial Colony-Forming Cells., Alicia Ivory, Andrew S Greene Oct 2023

Distinct Roles Of Estrone And Estradiol In Endothelial Colony-Forming Cells., Alicia Ivory, Andrew S Greene

Faculty Research 2023

Our current understanding of the relationship between estrogen and human endothelial colony-forming cell (hECFC) function is based almost exclusively on studies investigating estradiol action at nuclear estrogen receptors. In the current study the hypothesis was tested that the less potent estrogen receptor agonist, estrone, affects hECFC proliferation, migration, secretion, and tube formation in a way that is unique from that of estradiol. The relationship between the estrogens, estradiol and estrone, is clinically important, particularly in postmenopausal women where estradiol levels wane and estrone becomes the predominant estrogen. Cultured hECFCs from peripheral blood mononuclear cell fractions were treated with concentrations of …

Warmer Temperature Overrides The Effects Of Antidepressants On Amphibian Metamorphosis And Behavior, Peter Fong, Aylin Doganoglu, Eleanor Sandt, Sierra Turbeville Oct 2023

Warmer Temperature Overrides The Effects Of Antidepressants On Amphibian Metamorphosis And Behavior, Peter Fong, Aylin Doganoglu, Eleanor Sandt, Sierra Turbeville

Biology Faculty Publications

Climate change can exacerbate the effects of environmental pollutants on aquatic organisms. Pollutants such as human antidepressants released from wastewater treatment plants have been shown to impact life-history traits of amphibians. We exposed tadpoles of the wood frog Lithobates sylvaticus to two temperatures (20°C and 25°C) and two antidepressants (fluoxetine and venlafaxine), and measured timing of metamorphosis, mass at metamorphosis, and two behaviors (startle response and percent motionless). Antidepressants significantly shortened time to metamorphosis at 20°C, but not at 25°C. At 25°C, tadpoles metamorphosed significantly faster than those at 20°C independent of antidepressant exposure. Venlafax- ine reduced body mass at …

The Boundary Of Blame: How Inka Elite Exploited The Instrumental Agency Of The Deceased In The Andean Afterlife As A Legitimation Strategy, Sarah Bender Oct 2023

The Boundary Of Blame: How Inka Elite Exploited The Instrumental Agency Of The Deceased In The Andean Afterlife As A Legitimation Strategy, Sarah Bender

Anthropology Undergraduate Senior Theses

In many Mesoamerican and Andean cultures, divine rulers were directly responsible for interceding with the natural and spiritual world to ensure prosperity for the people. When these interventions failed, the legitimacy of the rulership was undermined. To mitigate this occurrence, Inka god-kings carefully installed a social buffer of liability or "boundary of blame” around themselves. Integrating translated historical accounts from the Early Colonial period with existing archaeological evidence, I argue for a new interpretation of Inka legitimation strategies that considers how living Sapa Inkas distributed responsibility (and blame) among themselves, deceased rulers and nobility, and victims of ritual sacrifice. Employing …

The Uses And Limitations Of Citizen Science For Monitoring The Australian Grey Nurse Shark (Carcharias Taurus) Population, Leah Corckran Oct 2023

The Uses And Limitations Of Citizen Science For Monitoring The Australian Grey Nurse Shark (Carcharias Taurus) Population, Leah Corckran

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

iNaturalist is a citizen science photographic database, which is an underutilized resource in photographic identification research studies. Grey nurse sharks are critically endangered and there is a lack of knowledge regarding the estimated population size, longevity, and interactions with fisheries of this species off the coasts of Australia. To determine how photos submitted to iNaturalist can be used in Carcharias taurus conservation, the photographs were evaluated on a number of criteria including: location, date, visibility of spot patterns, visible sex characteristics, and visible injuries. In total, 814 photographs of grey nurse sharks were obtained from the iNaturalist database. Only 23.2% …

Specialized Late Cingulo-Opercular Network Activation Elucidates The Mechanisms Underlying Decisions About Ambiguity, Jordan E. Pierce, Nathan M. Petro, Elizabeth Clancy, Caterina Gratton, Steven E. Petersen, Maital Neta

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

Cortical task control networks, including the cingulo-opercular (CO) network play a key role in decision-making across a variety of functional domains. In particular, the CO network functions in a performance reporting capacity that supports successful task performance, especially in response to errors and ambiguity. In two studies testing the contribution of the CO network to ambiguity processing, we presented a valence bias task in which masked clearly and ambiguously valenced emotional expressions were slowly revealed over several seconds. This slow reveal task design provides a window into the decision-making mechanisms as they unfold over the course of a trial. In …
