Using Noninvasive Calibrated Cuff Plethysmography To Observe The Effects Of Cold-Water Immersion On Arterial Compliance, Rita M. Grigorian

Master's Theses

As the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases continues to exponentially grow in populations across the globe, the necessity of determining underlying factors, effective methods of diagnoses, and universally available preventive measures also grows. Early detection of endothelial dysfunction, a proven precursor of cardiovascular diseases, can be extremely impactful in encouraging preventative measures and early intervention before medical conditions become chronic. In recent years, ice plunging, a form of cryotherapy involving full body immersion in cold water, has gained popularity within circles of fitness and health practitioners, gaining the interest of people of all backgrounds. Certain parallels observed between the human physiological …

G Protein-Coupled Receptors: A Target For Microbial Metabolites And A Mechanistic Link To Microbiome-Immune-Brain Interactions, Gajender Aleti, Emily A. Troyer, Suzi Hong

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

Human-microorganism interactions play a key role in human health. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Small-molecules that offer a functional readout of microbe-microbe-human relationship are of great interest for deeper understanding of the inter-kingdom crosstalk at the molecular level. Recent studies have demonstrated that small-molecules from gut microbiota act as ligands for specific human G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and modulate a range of human physiological functions, offering a mechanistic insight into the microbe-human interaction. To this end, we focused on analysis of bacterial metabolites that are currently recognized to bind to GPCRs and are found to activate the …

Exploring The Spatial Patterning Of Sociodemographic Disparities In Extreme Heat Exposure At Multiple Scales Across The Conterminous United States, Deeksha Rastogi, Jaekedah Christian, Joe Tuccillo, Blair Christian, Anuj J. Kapadia, Heidi A. Hanson Oct 2023

Exploring The Spatial Patterning Of Sociodemographic Disparities In Extreme Heat Exposure At Multiple Scales Across The Conterminous United States, Deeksha Rastogi, Jaekedah Christian, Joe Tuccillo, Blair Christian, Anuj J. Kapadia, Heidi A. Hanson

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Student Research

Abstract Climate change has led to an increase in heat‐related morbidity and mortality. The impact of heat on health is unequally distributed amongst different socioeconomic and demographic groups. We use high‐resolution daily air temperature‐based heat wave intensity (HWI) and neighborhood‐scale sociodemographic information from the conterminous United States to evaluate the spatial patterning of extreme heat exposure disparities. Assuming differences in spatial patterns at national, regional, and local scales; we assess disparities in heat exposure across race, housing characteristics, and poverty level. Our findings indicate small differences in HWI based on these factors at the national level, with the magnitude and …

Cle Working Paper No.1/2023--Driving Global Heating To 1.7° And Above: The New Canada Energy Future 2023 Report And Canada's Projected Oil Production To 2050, David Gooderham Oct 2023

Cle Working Paper No.1/2023--Driving Global Heating To 1.7° And Above: The New Canada Energy Future 2023 Report And Canada's Projected Oil Production To 2050, David Gooderham

Centre for Law and the Environment

The Canada Energy Regulator on June 20, 2023, released its new report Canada’s Energy Future 2023. For the first time the Federal Government’s energy regulator has directly addressed whether the currently projected growth of oil production in Canada to 2040 and 2050 is compatible with keeping increased warming to 1.5°C. The regulator’s analysis is based on three scenarios. Only the CER’s first scenario, the “Global Net-zero Scenario” (stated to be based on the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) “Net-Zero by 2050 Scenario”), is aligned with limiting warming to 1.5°C. That would require a very dramatic reduction in Canada’s existing oil production …

Minoritized Scientists In The United States: An Identity Perspective To Science Communication, Leilane Rodrigues, Bruno Takahashi, Leigh Anne Tiffany, Sunshine Menezes, Evelyn Valdéz-Ward

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

This study investigates how tenure-track faculty from historically marginalized groups in the environmental sciences approach science communication based on their self-identities. A thematic analysis of 28 in-depth interviews with U.S.-based participants using the Communication Theory of Identity and Border-Crossing Theory was conducted to explore the interrelation of layers of identity, the identity gaps participants experience, and their communication practices. The results show that communication merges fragments of identity not to form a fixed identity, but to create an evolving consciousness about who you are and how you communicate. Implications for science communication training are discussed.

Meiosis In Budding Yeast, G. Valentin Borner, Andreas Hochwagen, Amy J. Macqueen Oct 2023

Meiosis In Budding Yeast, G. Valentin Borner, Andreas Hochwagen, Amy J. Macqueen

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

Meiosis is a specialized cell division program that is essential for sexual reproduction. The two meiotic divisions reduce chromosome number by half, typically generating haploid genomes that are packaged into gametes. To achieve this ploidy reduction, meiosis relies on highly unusual chromosomal processes including the pairing of homologous chromosomes, assembly of the synaptonemal complex, programmed formation of DNA breaks followed by their processing into crossovers, and the segregation of homologous chromosomes during the first meiotic division. These processes are embedded in a carefully orchestrated cell differentiation program with multiple interdependencies between DNA metabolism, chromosome morphogenesis, and waves of gene expression …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The hacker ethos in the positive sense is about the ability to deconstruct and reconstruct information systems. Hacking starts with reconceptualizing libraries. Libraries are now beyond the book. As libraries evolve into a new sort of space --still a space for research, learning and study-- but also for community engagement and collaboration, library exhibits present a unique opportunity for both collaborating exhibitors and library users. Artists engage with libraries creatively through artist residencies, installations, using discarded library materials in their work, collaborative workshops, digital collections remixing, performances and more. Hacking the Library will present artwork that highlights the intersecting values …

Sátya

The Smith College Philosophy Journal, formerly Eudaimonia, was founded in the Fall of 2019 by You Jeen Ha. Due to the coronavirus, publication was suspended, and the original members of the Journal have since graduated. Finally, in Fall 2023, we are reviving the Journal under a new name, Sátya–a Sanskrit word meaning truth. We feel Sátya is representative of our cross-cultural approach to philosophy at Smith.

This edition of Sàtya is made up of the essays presented by students at Smith’s inaugural Five College Philosophy Conference in the Spring of 2023. The selection pool was full of quality submissions …

Local-Global Support For Earth Sciences: Economic Analysis, Uyen Hoang Pham, Aaron Velasco, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Most funding for science comes from taxpayers. So, it is very important to be able to convince taxpayers that this funding is potentially beneficial for them. This task is easier in Earth sciences, e.g., in meteorology, where there are clear local benefits. The problem is that while many people support local studies focused on their region, they do not always have a good understanding of the fact that effective local benefits require also studying surrounding areas -- and what should be the optimal balance between local and (more) global studies. In this paper, on a (somewhat) simplified model of the …
