Global Impact Of Proteoglycan Science On Human Diseases, Christopher Xie, Liliana Schaefer, Renato V. Iozzo
Global Impact Of Proteoglycan Science On Human Diseases, Christopher Xie, Liliana Schaefer, Renato V. Iozzo
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
In this comprehensive review, we will dissect the impact of research on proteoglycans focusing on recent developments involved in their synthesis, degradation, and interactions, while critically assessing their usefulness in various biological processes. The emerging roles of proteoglycans in global infections, specifically the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, and their rising functions in regenerative medicine and biomaterial science have significantly affected our current view of proteoglycans and related compounds. The roles of proteoglycans in cancer biology and their potential use as a next-generation protein-based adjuvant therapy to combat cancer is also emerging as a constructive and potentially beneficial therapeutic strategy. We will discuss …

Dynamical Oceanographic Processes Impact On Reef Manta Ray Behaviour: Extreme Indian Ocean Dipole Influence On Local Internal Wave Dynamics At A Remote Tropical Atoll, Edward Robinson, Phil Hosegood, Adam Bolton
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Physical oceanographic observations were made with subsurface, taut-line moorings at Egmont Island, a tropical atoll within the Chagos Archipelago in the central Indian Ocean, to elucidate the dynamics of near-bed cold-water intrusions implicated in driving local aggregations of reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi). Manta have been previously shown to aggregate within ‘Manta Alley’, a lipped gully at 65 m depth along the north coast, at times when the surface to bottom temperature difference was highest. We here identify the dynamical processes driving these temperature differences and shaping the foraging landscape at Egmont, and equivalent small-scale atolls, improving our understanding of …

Intracortical microelectrode arrays (MEAs) can be used in a range of applications, from basic neuroscience research to providing an intimate interface with the brain as part of a brain-computer interface (BCI) system aimed at restoring function for people living with neurological disorders or injuries. Unfortunately, MEAs tend to fail prematurely, leading to a loss in functionality for many applications. An important contributing factor in MEA failure is oxidative stress resulting from chronically inflammatory-activated microglia and macrophages releasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) around the implant site. Antioxidants offer a means for mitigating oxidative stress and improving tissue health and MEA performance. …

Dysregulation of protein synthesis is one of the key mechanisms underlying autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, the role of a major pathway controlling protein synthesis, the integrated stress response (ISR), in ASD remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that the main arm of the ISR, eIF2α phosphorylation (p-eIF2α), is suppressed in excitatory but not inhibitory neurons in a mouse model of fragile X syndrome (FXS; Fmr1−/y). We further show that the decrease in p-eIF2α is mediated via activation of the mTORC1. Genetic reduction of p-eIF2α only in excitatory neurons is sufficient to increase general protein synthesis and cause autism-like …

Aim Research on mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs) has increased exponentially in recent decades, and the significance of this ecosystem has been recognised both in terms of biodiversity and distribution. However, this research has mostly focussed on corals and is globally sporadic, with the Indian Ocean remaining largely unexplored and overall MCEs under protected. Hence, baseline data on MCE benthic communities is lacking, but nonetheless essential for developing adequate management strategies. Here, we assess the variation in diversity and community structure of MCEs along the depth gradient and among sites in the Indian Ocean and the environmental parameters that are potentially …

BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) of Alzheimer's disease (AD) have identified several risk loci, but many remain unknown. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers may aid in gene discovery and we previously demonstrated that six CSF biomarkers (β-amyloid, total/phosphorylated tau, NfL, YKL-40, and neurogranin) cluster into five principal components (PC), each representing statistically independent biological processes. Here, we aimed to (1) identify common genetic variants associated with these CSF profiles, (2) assess the role of associated variants in AD pathophysiology, and (3) explore potential sex differences.
METHODS: We performed GWAS for each of the five biomarker PCs in two multi-center studies (EMIF-AD …

Smart Sounding Table Using Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System, Osman Ünal, Nuri Akkaş
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Marine engineers measure the liquid level (sounding depth) to calculate the volumetric content of a ship's tank. The sounding depth is determined using an ullage pipe located at specific points on the tanks. To estimate the accurate volume of liquid, considering the ship's trim and heel conditions, engineers use a tank table (sounding table) consisting of hundreds of pages. However, this method is time-consuming and lacks intermediate values for sounding depth, trim, and heel. Ship designers recommend to use linear interpolation for intermediate values, yet this process is also time-consuming. This paper proposes the implementation of an Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference …

Wearable Sensor-Based Walkability Assessment At Ferry Terminal Using Machine Learning: A Case Study Of Mokpo, Korea, Jungyeon Choi, Hwayoung Kim
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Walkability assessments are becoming more popular, as walking offers numerous health, environmental, and economic benefits to communities. However, previous studies on ferry terminal walkability assessment have been inadequate. This study aimed to develop a wearable sensor system to automatically assess walkability at ferry terminals without conducting surveys. We applied seven machine learning (ML) classifiers to detect different walking environments, including flat ground (FG), downhill slope (DS), uphill slope (US), and uneven surface (UE). The ML models were evaluated across different combinations of classes: 2-class (FG vs. UE), 3-class (U) (FG vs. US vs. UE), 3-class (D) (FG vs. DS vs. …

Production Of Ground Granulated Blast-Furnace Slag Cement: Energy And Carbon Reduction Efficiency Of Cement-Grinding System, Kuan-Hung Lin, Chung-Chia Yang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This study used clinker, ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS), and gypsum in a cement-grinding system to produce GGBS cement (GCE). Gypsum was used as the alkaline activator to modify the surface area of GCE and increase its compressive strength. The results revealed that the use of the gypsum activator and the modification of the surface area of GCE effectively increased the formerly inadequate compressive strength of GCE (GGBS > 60%) in the early stage. In addition, energy consumption data were obtained during the production of GCE and Portland cement (PCE) by the cement-grinding system. The calculations concerning the production proportions indicated …

Sharing data between organizations has growing importance in many data mining projects. Data from various heterogeneous sources often has to be linked and aggregated in order to improve data quality. The importance of data accuracy and quality has increased with the explosion of data size. The first step to ensure the data accuracy is to make sure that each real world object is represented once and only once in a certain dataset which called Duplicate Record Detection (DRD). These data inaccuracy problems exist due to due to several factors including spelling, typographical and pronunciation variation, dialects and special vowel and …

Breast Ironing: Analyzing The Rights Of The Girl-Child In The Context Of Cameroon’S Obligation Under International Human Rights Law, Olusola Babatunde Adegbite, Olaitan Oluwaseyi Olusegun
Buffalo Human Rights Law Review
Among the various forms of sexual violence perpetrated against the girl-child, breast ironing remains largely obscured due to its underreporting. Yet thousands of girls, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa where it is most prevalent, continue to suffer in silence. These girls are not just exposed to the immediate violence of this act, but they also carry the scar of this human rights violation for life. With the scholarly focus on the practice rather scant, the necessary legal response has also been checkmated. The goal of this article is to bring international focus to this problem by examining the practice in the …

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) mimicry leading to toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) active compounds has been so far based mainly on reproducing the lipid A portion of LPS. Our work led to a series of structurally simplified synthetic TLR4 agonists in preclinical development as vaccine adjuvants called FPs. FPs bind MD2/TLR4 similarly to lipid A, inserting the lipid chains in the MD2 lipophilic cavity. A strategy to improve FPs’ target affinity is introducing a monosaccharide unit in C6, mimicking the first sugar of the LPS core. We therefore designed a panel of FP derivatives bearing different monosaccharides in C6. We report here the …

While exploring the Broad River, students at Gardner-Webb University might observe what looks like a rock, but it’s really a bivalved freshwater mussel or mollusk, points out Dr. David Campbell, associate professor of paleontology and chair of the Department of Natural Sciences. Clams and oysters are examples of bivalved mollusks, and he has studied various species of them since he was a senior in high school (35 years). His son, Timothy, a first-year Gardner-Webb student, is carrying on the tradition, and recently father and son presented their research at the international meeting on bivalves at Cambridge University in England.

Ethiopian Modernization: Opportunities and Derailments
The last chapter concluded with the generalized expectation that the fall of the Derg would set in motion some form of democratization dismantling the wide-ranging restrictions of the existing socialist system, even if there was uncertainty about the real political program of the victorious Tigrean insurgents. Despite promises of democratization, it did not take long for people to realize that Ethiopia was heading for yet another version of hegemonic rule, this one replacing the class ideology of the previous regime with ethnonationalism. As though a curse were on it, Ethiopia’s modernization will once more stumble over an ideology and a …

Immunoglobulin E (IgE) is the primary cause of allergic asthma. Allergen-specific IgE can be detected in the airway of allergic asthma patients even in the absence of circulating IgE, suggesting that IgE can be synthesized locally in the respiratory tract. However, the source of IgE-producing B cells, as well as how IgE responses arise and persist at mucosal sites are not fully understood. To address these questions, we modeled allergic asthma in mice by repeated intranasal administration of ragweed pollen and ovalbumin (OVA). We found that allergen exposure induced the production of local IgE in the airway and formation of …

MOTIVATION: Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) benefit from the increasing availability of genomic data and cross-institution collaborations. However, sharing data across institutional boundaries jeopardizes medical data confidentiality and patient privacy. While modern cryptographic techniques provide formal secure guarantees, the substantial communication and computational overheads hinder the practical application of large-scale collaborative GWAS.
RESULTS: This work introduces an efficient framework for conducting collaborative GWAS on distributed datasets, maintaining data privacy without compromising the accuracy of the results. We propose a novel two-step strategy aimed at reducing communication and computational overheads, and we employ iterative and sampling techniques to ensure accurate results. We …
