Biofilm Formation In Bath Toys, Kelsey Daniels

Harrisburg University Research Symposium: Highlighting Research, Innovation, & Creativity

Biofilms are a collective of microorganisms and matrixes that can grow on a variety of surfaces. Depending on the environment, the growth of biofilm formation can vary. These environmental factors may include temperature or access to nutrients. Overtime unkept bath toys can form a biofilm layer, which can be hard to remove and hazardous to children. It is important to understand biofilms so that a variety of methods can be successfully used against them.

The Effect Of Sevoflurane Anesthetics On Venus Flytrap (Dionaea Muscipula) Compared To Diethyl Ether Anesthetics, Okiki Adegboro

Harrisburg University Research Symposium: Highlighting Research, Innovation, & Creativity

Although general anesthesia is a condition of controlled unconsciousness, its mechanisms are not completely known. Anesthesia has an impact on the body by obstructing the flow of nerve impulses, which impacts sensation and muscular movement. Few studies have looked into the effects of anesthetics on plants, compared to the numerous studies that have been done on their effects on people and animals. The unusual plant known as the venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipulai) reacts to touch cues very quickly. An action potential is created when a bug makes contact with the trigger hairs on the head of the Venus flytrap. The …

Effects Of Growth Rate On Peptidoglycan Crosslink Density Of E. Coli Using Fluorescent Labeling, Morgan Olszewski

Harrisburg University Research Symposium: Highlighting Research, Innovation, & Creativity

Peptidoglycan (PG) is a polymer composed of polysaccharides and crosslinked peptide chains found in bacterial cell walls. It helps to protect the cell from environmental stress and maintain cell morphology throughout its life cycle and further generations. The PG is made up of two sugars, N-acetyl muramic acid (NAM) and N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG). NAM and NAG are connected by glycosidic linkages to form repeated chains. The chains are formed in layers, which are interconnected via a polypeptide stem linked by a peptide bridge. During cell growth, continuous turnover of existing PG occurs by severing existing crosslinks, inserting new PG into …

Southern California Marine Protected Areas Promote Bolder Fish Populations, Lucian Himes, Florybeth F. La Valle Oct 2023

Southern California Marine Protected Areas Promote Bolder Fish Populations, Lucian Himes, Florybeth F. La Valle

Summer Undergraduate Research in Biology Program

Marine protected areas (MPAs) aim to protect habitats and ecosystems to promote the diversity and health of marine populations. To evaluate the health of fish populations within and outside of MPAs in Southern California, we used flight initiation distance (FID). FID is the distance at which an individual will flee from a perceived predator and is a direct measure of boldness. Lower FIDs are indicative of bolder populations. Lower FID values indicate that fish will have the opportunity to dedicate less energy to fleeing from predators which could then be used for increased foraging. Data was collected from eight locations …

Extending The Capsicum Growing Season Under Semi-Arid Climate By Using A Suitable Protected Cropping Structure, Giao N. Nguyen, Neil Lantzke

Horticulture Research Articles

Carnarvon is a key horticultural district in Western Australia which is located approximately 900 km north of Perth and is characterised by a semi-arid climate. In Carnarvon, capsicum (Capsicum annuum L.) is the second most important vegetable crop after tomato, with approximately 3700 tonnes of capsicum fruit produced annually with a farm gate value of AUD 13.5 million. High temperatures, excessive sunlight, low air humidity, and strong wind in spring and summer are major impediments to the achievement of high yield and quality of capsicum in this region. Capsicums are usually planted between March (early autumn) and May (late autumn), …

Biology

Metagenomes encode an enormous diversity of proteins, reflecting a multiplicity of functions and activities1,2. Exploration of this vast sequence space has been limited to a comparative analysis against reference microbial genomes and protein families derived from those genomes. Here, to examine the scale of yet untapped functional diversity beyond what is currently possible through the lens of reference genomes, we develop a computational approach to generate reference-free protein families from the sequence space in metagenomes. We analyse 26,931 metagenomes and identify 1.17 billion protein sequences longer than 35 amino acids with no similarity to any sequences from 102,491 …

Genetic And Pharmacological Factors Control Aging In Caenorhabditis Elegans., Brian Mcnally Egan Oct 2023

Genetic And Pharmacological Factors Control Aging In Caenorhabditis Elegans., Brian Mcnally Egan

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Aging is a time-dependent decline in organismal structure and function that ultimately results in death. Aging occurs in nearly all metazoan organisms, and is a major risk factor for many human diseases including cancer, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s Disease. The genetic pathways and mechanistic factors that underly the aging process are poorly understood. Control of aging in the nematode C. elegans can be accomplished via modulation of gene activity by genetic knockdown or by the introduction of inhibitory pharmaceutical compounds. While many such interventions have been described in the literature, understanding the underlying mechanisms that control aging remains …

An Imperial History Of Race-Religion In International Law, Rabiat Akande Oct 2023

An Imperial History Of Race-Religion In International Law, Rabiat Akande

Articles & Book Chapters

More than half a century after the UN’s adoption of the International Convention on the Prohibition of All Forms of Racial Discrimination, a debate has emerged over whether to extend the Convention’s protections to religious discrimination. This Article uses history to intervene in the debate. It argues that racial and religious othering were mutually co-constitutive in the colonial encounter and foundational to the making of modern international law. Moreover, the contemporary proposal to address the interplay of racial and religious othering is hardly new; iterations of that demand surfaced in the earlier twentieth century, as well. By illuminating the centrality …
