Surface chemistry of materials that host quantum bits such as diamond is an important avenue of exploration as quantum computation and quantum sensing platforms mature. Interfacing diamond in general and nanoscale diamond (ND) in particular with silica is a potential route to integrate room temperature quantum bits into photonic devices, fiber optics, cells, or tissues with flexible functionalization chemistry. While silica growth on ND cores has been used successfully for quantum sensing and biolabeling, the surface mechanism to initiate growth was unknown. This report describes the surface chemistry responsible for silica bond formation on diamond and uses X-ray absorption spectroscopy …

Rethinking The Presumption Of Enablement In Nonpatent Prior Art, Gabrielle Carlini Dec 2023

Rethinking The Presumption Of Enablement In Nonpatent Prior Art, Gabrielle Carlini

Duke Law Journal

The rising popularity of tools such as preprint servers, open-access data sources, and generative artificial intelligence has resulted in a proliferation of prior art that has never been seen before under the current patent system. In a rapidly changing world, patent law is slow to catch up, and the current system is not equipped to handle the flood of incoming prior art. In the academic research setting in particular, while the use of preprint servers and open-source data has allowed researchers to participate in widespread information exchange, these tools have also generated a new, large class of prior art dedicated …

Disrupting Perceptions Of Color Blindness As The Norm: Children’S Talk About Race, Grace Reid Dec 2023

Disrupting Perceptions Of Color Blindness As The Norm: Children’S Talk About Race, Grace Reid

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Talking about race can improve children’s ethnic identities, prepare them for encounters with racism, and reduce their racial biases. Yet adults hold intuitive beliefs (e.g., children do not notice race) that limit their conversations about race with children. Children can also initiate conversations about race, but children have been found to avoid talking about race by 10 years. It has been suggested that children avoid talking about race because of colorblind norms, but children’s reasoning about color blindness as a norm is not well understood. Even less is known about the conditions under which children will talk about race. Across …

Enablement For Genus Claims: A Bifurcated Approach, Jie Yang Dec 2023

Enablement For Genus Claims: A Bifurcated Approach, Jie Yang

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

Abstract After two jury trials, two trips to the Federal Circuit, and two petitions to the Supreme Court, the Court this past term decided Amgen Inc. v. Sanofi without much controversy. In a unanimous decision, the Court affirmed the invalidation of Amgen’s functional antibody claims for lack of enablement. As a result, inventors down the road, not just life sciences companies, may find it more difficult to obtain broad patents. Although the Court was clear that Amgen may not “monopolize an entire class of things defined by their function,” the opinion fell short of guiding lower courts on how to …

Discerning The Roles Of Novel Glycosyltransferases In The Pathogenic Yeast Cryptococcus Neoformans, Liza Loza

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Cryptococcus neoformans (Cn) is an opportunistic fungal pathogen responsible for over 112,000 deaths each year. This yeast is ubiquitous in the environment, where it is particularly associated with soil, trees, and bird excreta. When a susceptible host inhales infectious particles, Cn can proliferate in the lungs before disseminating to the brain to cause an often-fatal meningoencephalitis. Cryptococcosis primarily afflicts those living with uncontrolled HIV/AIDS, accounting for ~15% of AIDS-related mortality. The antifungals available to treat this devastating disease are few in number, toxic to patients, and largely inaccessible in resource-limited settings. The major virulence factor of Cn is its complex …

Characterization Of 3d Printed Lattice Structures Used In The Design Of Modified Compression Release Stabilized Transhumeral Prosthetic Sockets, Jade Myers Dec 2023

Characterization Of 3d Printed Lattice Structures Used In The Design Of Modified Compression Release Stabilized Transhumeral Prosthetic Sockets, Jade Myers

Theses

Abstract A prosthetic socket is the critical interface between a person and their prosthetic device. Pressure, shear, and friction experienced by the residual limb from wearing a socket can damage soft tissue. While Compression Release Stabilized (CRS) style sockets are beneficial for enhancing prosthesis stability, range of motion, and control, the abrupt differences in compression throughout the socket present risks for tissue damage to the residual limb. A socket design that enables clinicians to control a progressive decrease in firmness in the transition areas between compression and release could mitigate such undesirable effects. Density-graded lattice structures designed and produced with …
