Residential foundation selection is critical for the lifetime performance of the project, but the type of foundation selected can depend on cost. This study aims to compare the new construction costs of residential slab-on-fill and four types of crawl space foundations for residential projects by quantifying the material quantities for each and exploring the effect of building characteristics on material quantities and total costs. The building characteristics selected are size (139 m2, 186 m2, and 232 m2), footprint aspect ratio (1:1, 1:2.5, and 1:5) and first floor elevation (0 m–1.2 m in 0.3 m increments). We find that material quantities …

Homeowner Flood Risk And Risk Reduction From Home Elevation Between The Limits Of The 100- And 500-Year Floodplains, Ayat Al Assi, Rubayet Bin Mostafiz, Carol J. Friedland, Robert V. Rohli, Md Adilur Rahim Jan 2023

Homeowner Flood Risk And Risk Reduction From Home Elevation Between The Limits Of The 100- And 500-Year Floodplains, Ayat Al Assi, Rubayet Bin Mostafiz, Carol J. Friedland, Robert V. Rohli, Md Adilur Rahim

Faculty Publications

Floods inflict significant damage even outside the 100-year floodplain. Thus, restricting flood risk analysis to the 100-year floodplain (Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) in the United States of America) is misleading. Flood risk outside the SFHA is often underestimated because of minimal flood-related insurance requirements and regulations and sparse flood depth data. This study proposes a systematic approach to predict flood risk for a single-family home using average annual loss (AAL) in the shaded X Zone–the area immediately outside the SFHA (i.e., the 500-year floodplain), which lies between the limits of the 1.0- and 0.2-percent annual flood probability. To further …

The objective of the study was to assess cytotoxicity (based on the dimethylthiazol– diphenyltetrazolium bromide cell viability assay) and antimicrobial effects of poly(lactictide-co-glycolide) nanoparticles with entrapped mupirocin (PLGA/MUP NPs) on Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) strains using a disk-diffusion method, cryo-scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) and fluorescence microscopy. Based on the evaluation of the growth curve, PLGA/MUP NPs inhibited growth of the both tested strains already at a concentration of 0.29 µg/ml, and their inhibitory effect at concentrations from 0.29 to 1.17 µg/ml was comparable with free MUP using the disk-diffusion method. PLGA/MUP NPs also tended to increase the …

Synthesis, Molecular Simulation Studies, In Vitro Biological Assessment Of 2-Substituted Benzoxazole Derivatives As Promising Antimicrobial Agents, Gajanan S. Shanbhan, Amit Bhargava, Giridhar Pal Singh, Shrinivas D. Joshi, Narendra Chundawat

Turkish Journal of Chemistry

The 2-substituted benzoxazole derivatives are known to exhibit a wide spectrum of biological potential. Two series of novel benzoxazole derivatives containing 2-phenyl and 2-N-phenyl groups were synthesized, by following the green chemistry approach. All the newly synthesized derivatives were screened against gram-positive bacteria (Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus), gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli) and the fungus (Aspergillus clavatus and Candida albicans). Most of these compounds have demonstrated potent antibacterial activities, especially against E. coli at 25 μg/mL, along with moderate antifungal activity. Among these, two compounds, 21 and 18, showed interesting antibacterial profile. Molecular …

Unpacking Elementary Preservice Teachers’ Ways Of Reflecting On Conceptual Mistakes, Nicole Wessman-Enzinger, Natasha Gerstenschlager

Faculty Publications - College of Education

We know that making mistakes in mathematics is an inherent attribute of doing mathematics deeply. Yet, making mistakes is at the root of mathema- tical fear and anxiety for elementary preservice teachers (PSTs). Valuing mistakes in mathematics is an essential part of shifting from deficient views to asset views of mistakes and having better mathematical learning experi- ences. In two mathematics content courses at different universities, we implemented a project, “My Favorite Conceptual Mistake,” as a tool for supporting PSTs in reflecting on conceptual mistakes about mathematics. In this article, we describe the ways that the PSTs reflected on mistakes. …

This study examined participants' stereotypic views of fathers. The analysis used the Stereotype Content Model as a focus. Participants (Ps) first rated men in general and then different types of fathers (3 types) on 62 traits (e.g., open, caring) on a 6-point scales (0 = not all like to 6 = most like). The father types measured included: married father, divorced non-resident, divorced resident, stepfather, never married, adoptive, and gay fathers. These ratings were compared to what participants believe is typical of men and will assess the extent that each type of father is in the domains of warmth and …

Impacts Of Viral Infection By Ma-Lmm01 On Microcystin Production By Microcystis Aeruginosa, Amber Elizabeth Haley Jan 2023

Impacts Of Viral Infection By Ma-Lmm01 On Microcystin Production By Microcystis Aeruginosa, Amber Elizabeth Haley

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Increasing global temperatures and nutrient availability from anthropogenic sources have contributed to climate change and pollution in waterways. Environmental changes have promoted annual harmful algal blooms (HABs), which have the potential to lead to conditions that negatively affect aquatic ecosystems and organisms that depend on them. HABs can impact water quality through the release of soluble toxins (e.g., microcystin), produced by cyanobacteria that can bypass standard drinking water processing protocols. It has been suggested that viral infections of cyanobacteria may contribute to increased production and release of microcystins. In this project, two hypotheses were assessed: 1) virus-mediated lysis releases toxins …

Sexism And Racism In Stem: A Bleak History And A Bright Future, Abigail Hoskins Jan 2023

Sexism And Racism In Stem: A Bleak History And A Bright Future, Abigail Hoskins

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Women and people of color have faced discrimination throughout history, and this inequity persists today. This results in low numbers of women and people of color in STEM and leads to stereotypes and bias as well as harassment, financial disparities, and erasure of their contributions. Current initiatives promote equality and equity in STEM, such as protests against discriminatory practices and after-school programs encouraging youth from marginalized groups to participate in STEM, but these are not enough. Institutional and structural changes and solutions that address the intersectional needs of women and people of color are necessary to ensure equity and equality …

Neoichnological Framework Of Coastal Habitat Shifts Represented By Bahamian Decapod Burrows, Ilya Val Buynevich, Karen Kopcznski, Christopher Sparacio, H. Allen Curran

Geosciences: Faculty Publications

In coastal settings, the cumulative spatial and temporal impacts of burrowing, ichnofabric formation, and biodeposition by large crustaceans have been largely neglected at zoogeomorphic scales. These traces also serve as important (paleo-)environmental and (paleo)hydrologic indicators, both vertical (tidal or groundwater level) and lateral (areal wetland or basin extent). To date, 354 only few studies have addressed the comparative value of decapod ichnites generated by land crabs in carbonate settings. The aim of this paper is to introduce a general conceptual framework for burrows created by three crab species in the Bahama Archipelago, using examples from San Salvador Island.

The Consequences Of Sleep Deprivation On Cognitive Performance, Mohammad A. Khan, Hamdan Al-Jahdali

Neurosciences

Although not fully understood, sleep is accepted as a vital and organized sequence of events that follows a regular cyclic program each night to ensure the human body can perform at its optimum. A lack of sleep, or sleep deprivation (SD), is a widespread phenomenon that can induce adverse changes in cognitive performance. This review focused on the biological explanation as well as the research investigating the numerous effects that SD can have on cognition. A reduction in sleep does not occur independently of the effects on memory, attention, alertness, judgment, decision-making, and overall cognitive abilities in the brain, resulting …

Gender Differences In Administration Of Tpa In Treatment Of Ischemic Stroke, Christina Annerino Jan 2023

Gender Differences In Administration Of Tpa In Treatment Of Ischemic Stroke, Christina Annerino

CURE Proceedings

As medicine and pharmacology advance through the years, new life-saving treatments are studied or discovered every day, and a medical emergency is no longer a death sentence. Even with conditions as serious as ischemic stroke, there is hope for survival and rehabilitation with the ‘clot-busting’ drug, tissue plasminogen activator, colloquially known as ‘tPA’. tPA is a thrombolytic agent, a substance that acts on fibrin in clots to dissolve them so they can no longer cause ischemia in blood vessels that results in a stroke. (Vega, 2022). tPA is an extremely effective treatment for ischemic stroke, demonstrated in 2013 by a …

Economic Values, Social Values And Cultural Animal Theory, Kevin Smith

Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications

Baumeister and Bushman (this issue: Psychological Inquiry 2023, vol. 34, no. 1) offer a cultural animal theory of partisan hostility (hereafter CAT) with the specific aim of explaining the root drivers of political conflict. CAT posits that competition for power revolves around oppositional worldviews reflecting preferences attached to the two primary objectives of all successful societies: amassing and distributing resources. Based on this premise CAT seeks not only to help explain the persistence of the themes motivating political conflict, but also to shed light on the underlying causes of growing levels affective polarization widely documented in the United States and …

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The Chinese pond mussel Sinanodonta woodiana (Lea, 1834) (Bivalvia: Unionidae) is among the most invasive freshwater species worldwide. The last decades have seen its rapid geographical spread beyond the species' natural range, particularly in anthropogenically modified water bodies across Asia, America, and Europe where it is now very common. In this paper, we also confirm the presence of S. woodiana in Africa (Algeria) by establishing the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and Ramsar site Oubeira Lake as a new locality for its occurrence. In all likelihood, S. woodiana was accidentally introduced in the 1980s with Asian fish species imported from Hungary for …

Journal Articles: Epidemiology

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic patients who test negative for common viruses are an important possible source of unrecognised or emerging pathogens, but metagenomic sequencing of all samples is inefficient because of the low likelihood of finding a pathogen in any given sample. We aimed to determine whether nasopharyngeal CXCL10 screening could be used as a strategy to enrich for samples containing undiagnosed viruses.

METHODS: In this pathogen surveillance and detection study, we measured CXCL10 concentrations from nasopharyngeal swabs from patients in the Yale New Haven health-care system, which had been tested at the Yale New Haven Hospital Clinical Virology Laboratory (New Haven, …
